What should I check before upgrading a self-hosted Docker management UI? First identify the exact product, installed and target versions, deployment mode, image reference, persistent data location, managed Docker Engine versions, agents and plugins. Then validate the vendor-supported upgrade path, read every intervening release note, create and test a restorable backup, plan component order and downtime, and define a rollback that uses a matching application version and database.
This process applies to Portainer and other self-hosted interfaces, but their procedures are not interchangeable. A Standalone Docker installation may require a different procedure from Swarm or another platform, and a moving image tag is not a sufficient record of what you were running.

1. Build an accurate inventory before touching the running container
An upgrade decision is only as safe as the inventory behind it. Record the current state in a change ticket or another location that remains available if the management UI goes offline.
Identify the product and versions
- Product and edition, such as a server, agent, or enterprise variant.
- Exact installed version and the exact target version, including patch numbers.
- Container image reference, tag or digest, registry, and architecture.
- The currently running image reference, retained separately from the intended target.
Do not treat latest as a historical record. A tag can point to a different image later, making an emergency redeployment ambiguous. Keep the old image reference available until acceptance testing is complete.

Map the deployment mode
Write down whether the UI runs on Docker Standalone, Docker Swarm, or another supported platform. Note whether the server and agents run as containers, services, or another installation type. Portainer publishes platform-specific update paths; applying a Standalone procedure to Swarm can produce the wrong service definition, volume handling, or restart behavior.
Record everything the UI depends on
- Persistent volume or bind mount that contains the UI database and configuration.
- Compose files, stack definitions, environment files, secrets references, and labels used to recreate the deployment.
- Connected local and remote environments, agent endpoints, plugins, storage integrations, and architecture types.
- Authentication integrations, certificates, reverse-proxy settings, webhooks, automation jobs, and scripts that call the UI or Docker API.
- Critical workflows: deploying a stack, viewing logs, opening a console, updating an image, managing Swarm services, and administering users or teams.
The exact inventory depends on the product. The governing rule is to use the vendor documentation for the installation mode and version actually in front of you.
2. Validate the installed-to-target upgrade path
Do not jump directly from a familiar old version to a new image because the target tag exists. Read the target release notes, migration notes, and upgrade guide for every version crossed from the installed release through the target.
Questions the release documentation must answer
- Is the direct path supported, or are intermediate versions required?
- Has the vendor tested and validated this combination of source and target versions?
- Are database migrations, configuration edits, changed defaults, or manual conversion steps required?
- Which features, API fields, integrations, or command options have been removed or renamed?
- Will the update restart the management UI, agents, managed stacks, or application containers?
- Are there version-specific warnings for your deployment mode, operating system, CPU architecture, or authentication method?
Portainer explicitly advises testing an untested or unvalidated path on a non-critical system first. That is a useful rule for any self-hosted UI: clone the deployment or use a disposable environment with representative agents and stacks before changing production.
Compare candidate targets instead of choosing by date alone
| Decision axis | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Vendor support | Whether the installed-to-target sequence is documented and validated for your deployment mode. |
| Docker compatibility | Supported Docker Engine and API versions for every managed host. |
| Connected components | Agent, plugin, storage integration, architecture, and authentication compatibility. |
| Data migration | Schema changes, required backups, and whether an older binary can reopen the migrated data. |
| Workload impact | Expected UI downtime, container or service restarts, and changed naming or defaults. |
| Testability | Whether the target can be exercised on a non-critical instance before production. |
3. Check Docker Engine, API, agent, and plugin compatibility
A management UI is a client of the Docker API. The UI can start normally while a managed host, agent, or plugin fails when a particular operation is requested, so check every connected component rather than only the server container.

Compare every managed host
- Docker Engine version on each local and remote host.
- API version exposed by each daemon and the minimum API required by the target UI.
- Operating-system and CPU architecture combinations.
- Agent versions, plugins, volume drivers, registries, and storage integrations.
- Swarm manager and worker versions when Swarm is involved.
Docker Engine 29.0.0 release notes, dated November 10, 2025, state that the release includes breaking changes and deprecations and that the daemon requires API v1.44 or later. Treat that as a host-compatibility checkpoint, not as proof that every UI supports Engine 29.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A March 10, 2026 Portainer technical advisory describes Docker Engine v29 API changes rejecting older clients and tooling, with particular impact reported for Swarm environments and legacy volume plugins. A separate Portainer advisory illustrates the same class of risk: Docker 26 removed image API response fields that older Portainer versions used, affecting image details and container-console access. These are Portainer-specific examples of why the exact UI, Engine, and agent version pair must be checked against the current support matrix.
Test the operations that use the compatibility-sensitive APIs
- Open an environment and list containers, images, volumes, and networks.
- Inspect image details and container logs.
- Open a container console if your team uses that function.
- Deploy, update, and roll back a representative stack.
- For Swarm, list nodes and services, inspect task state, and update a harmless service.
- Exercise any volume plugin or registry integration required by production.
4. Protect persistent state and prove that it can be restored
Back up the management UI’s own persistent data before changing the image. Also preserve the files and values needed to recreate the deployment: compose or service definitions, environment values, secrets references, certificates, and reverse-proxy configuration.
Make the backup independent of the container being replaced
- Identify the volume or bind mount that contains the UI database and configuration.
- Copy or snapshot it to storage outside the container and outside the host failure domain when practical.
- Record the backup timestamp, source version, target version, and exact restoration location.
- Ensure permissions, ownership, encryption, and retention meet your normal backup policy.
- Keep a copy of the currently running image so the backup has a compatible application to open it.
Do not assume a database-only fallback is a complete installation backup. Portainer recommends a pre-update backup and documents an automatic fallback containing portainer.db in the portainer_data volume; that does not guarantee that every certificate, deployment file, plugin setting, or external integration has been captured.
Verify restoration before production
On a non-critical host, restore the backup into an isolated instance running the same application version that created it. Confirm that users, environments, stacks, settings, and authentication behave as expected. A backup that exists but has never been opened is an untested recovery assumption.

5. Plan for database migrations and rollback limitations
Write the rollback procedure before the upgrade, not after an error. Define who can stop the UI, replace the image, restore the persistent data, and validate the environments.
Understand the schema constraint
Portainer states that newer database schemas generally cannot be opened by older versions. Therefore, rolling back only the container image after a successful migration may fail: the old binary can encounter a database it does not understand.
A practical rollback sequence
- Stop making additional changes when an acceptance check fails.
- Record logs, error messages, the running image reference, and the state of connected environments.
- Stop the upgraded deployment according to the product’s documented procedure.
- Restore the pre-upgrade persistent data rather than editing the migrated database in place.
- Start the exact previous application image or version that matches that backup.
- Reconnect or restore agents only as the vendor’s rollback instructions require.
- Verify sign-in, environment visibility, stack state, and critical operations before declaring recovery complete.
Never improvise a downgrade by pairing an old binary with a newer database. If the vendor requires a different sequence, its instructions take precedence over this generic pattern.
6. Account for release-specific behavior changes
Release notes can contain operational changes that are easy to miss because the UI still starts successfully.
Generated names and scripts
Portainer’s Compose V2 upgrade changed generated container-name separators from underscores to hyphens. If scripts, monitoring rules, reverse-proxy routes, or documentation refer to generated names, search for those dependencies before upgrading and update them deliberately.

Unexpected workload restarts
Portainer documentation for release 2.20.3 states that updating stacks and edge stacks could restart their containers because of the included Docker Compose 2.26.1 behavior. This is a dated, release-specific example, not a prediction for every current release. Check the target notes for restart warnings and schedule the change accordingly.
Removed fields and changed defaults
Look for API response changes, renamed settings, altered authentication defaults, removed features, and changed compose interpretation. Inspect automation that parses JSON, assumes a label, or expects a particular generated name.
7. Sequence connected components correctly
When the product has a server and agents, follow its documented order. Portainer’s general recommendation is: “In general, we recommend updating your Portainer Server deployment before you update the Portainer Agents.” Portainer designs the Server to remain compatible with older Agents where possible, while some Agent changes are not fully backward compatible with older Servers.
- Confirm the target Server and Agent versions are a supported pair.
- Update the Server using the procedure for your deployment mode.
- Check that existing environments remain connected.
- Update Agents in the documented order and batch size.
- Re-test remote operations, logs, consoles, stacks, and storage integrations.
Do not generalize Portainer’s order to another product without reading that product’s instructions. Some systems require a controller-first sequence; others may require coordinated upgrades or a temporary compatibility mode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Schedule the change and define acceptance tests
Choose a maintenance window based on the UI’s expected downtime and the possibility of managed workload restarts. Notify operators who depend on deployments, logs, consoles, alerts, or access control. Freeze unrelated infrastructure changes so a failure has a clear cause.

Run a focused smoke test after startup
- Confirm the container or service is running and reports the intended version.
- Sign in through the normal endpoint, including the reverse proxy and authentication integration.
- Check that all expected environments, nodes, stacks, users, teams, and permissions are visible.
- Inspect service status and logs for migration errors, API failures, authentication errors, and repeated restarts.
- List containers, images, volumes, and networks on a representative host.
- Deploy or update a harmless test stack, then inspect its logs and status.
- Exercise production-critical workflows such as console access, registry pulls, Swarm service inspection, or volume operations.
- Confirm monitoring, webhooks, scheduled jobs, and automation clients still receive the responses they expect.
These checks are practical acceptance criteria rather than a universal vendor test. Adjust them to the operations your team actually performs.

The UI will not start
Do not repeatedly restart it while changing multiple variables. Inspect logs, verify that the persistent volume is mounted at the expected path, and check for a schema or permission error. If the data was migrated, use the planned restore with the matching previous version rather than simply changing the image tag.
The UI starts but an environment is disconnected
Check the agent version, endpoint address, certificates, network path, Docker API compatibility, and firewall or reverse-proxy changes. Avoid deleting and recreating an environment until its configuration and credentials are documented.
A stack or container changed unexpectedly
Compare the release notes for compose behavior, generated names, default values, and restart conditions. Inspect the rendered stack definition and service events, then apply the vendor’s documented correction. Treat workload data and configuration as a separate backup concern from the management UI database.
Only one feature fails
Capture the exact operation, API response, host Engine version, agent version, plugin version, and UI logs. A failure limited to image details, console access, Swarm operations, or a volume plugin often indicates an API or component mismatch rather than a damaged UI database.
10. Final go/no-go checklist
- The product, edition, installed version, target version, deployment mode, image reference, and architecture are recorded.
- Every managed host’s Docker Engine version and API compatibility are checked.
- Agents, plugins, storage drivers, registries, authentication, and automation dependencies are included.
- Release notes and migration guidance have been read for every crossed version.
- The upgrade path is vendor-supported or has passed a non-critical test.
- Persistent UI data and recreation files are backed up outside the replacement container.
- A restore test has opened the backup with its matching application version.
- Component order, maintenance window, operators, and expected restarts are documented.
- The previous image and matching backup are available for rollback.
- Post-upgrade version, environments, logs, permissions, stacks, and critical operations have explicit acceptance checks.
If any item is unknown, pause the upgrade and resolve that uncertainty first. The safest update is the one for which the running state, compatibility boundaries, data recovery, and rollback version are all concrete.
