Before opening an investment account or sending money, verify the legal firm and the person offering the service in official U.S. regulator databases, confirm that the website or caller really belongs to that firm, and read the documents that explain fees, conflicts, and account terms. Registration and investor-protection membership answer specific questions; neither guarantees investment performance or proves that a message or app is genuine.
This guide focuses on U.S. investment platforms and securities professionals. Rules and protections depend on the product and jurisdiction. If you are outside the United States, check with your own country’s financial regulator.
1. Identify the firm and the person behind the account
Start with the legal name of the company and the name of the individual who will advise you, solicit you, or handle the account. A brand name on an app may differ from the legal firm name. Ask for the full names and any prior names, then verify both the firm and the individual—not just one or the other.

- Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) is the SEC and state-regulator search tool for investment advisers and their representatives. Review registration information, employment history, disclosures, and available filing records.
- FINRA BrokerCheck provides background information on brokers and brokerage firms, including registration and reported disciplinary or dispute history.
- For futures or commodities professionals, consult the NFA BASIC database and the CFTC’s disciplinary-history resources.
Read the details rather than treating a search result as a pass/fail stamp. Check current status, prior employment or firm names where available, and disclosures involving disputes or regulatory actions. State securities regulators may have additional information. The SEC’s Investor.gov explains how to use official tools and identify investment professionals.

A regulatory filing, registration document, or screenshot supplied by a promoter is not proof of registration. Verify status directly in the relevant official database; scammers can misrepresent filings or use another firm’s identity.
2. Make sure the person contacting you really represents the firm
A genuine registered firm can be impersonated. A valid company name does not establish that an unsolicited caller, text, email, social-media account, app, or website is connected to it.

- Find the firm independently in Investor.gov and open the regulator-linked record.
- Retrieve its Form CRS through the firm record. This relationship summary includes official firm contact information.
- Contact the firm using the details in that document and ask whether the person, account, website, or offer is authentic.
- Do not use phone numbers, links, payment instructions, or account details supplied only by an unsolicited message or social profile.
Do not rely on a convincing-looking site, app-store listing, testimonials, or a small successful withdrawal as proof. Verify the contact and destination independently before sharing credentials, identity documents, or money.

3. Read the documents that define the relationship
Before opening an account, obtain and read the account agreement and the firm’s Form CRS. For an investment adviser, review its current Form ADV, especially Part 2, the narrative brochure. These documents explain what the firm does, how it is paid, conflicts of interest, standards of conduct, services, and reportable legal or disciplinary history.

Know what service you are actually getting
A brokerage account may primarily execute transactions; an adviser may provide ongoing advice, financial planning, or another defined service. Some platforms offer only a limited set of products or recommendations. Do not assume that two services with similar interfaces provide the same advice, monitoring, or support. Check the agreement and disclosures for what is included, what is excluded, and any limits on recommendations or professional credentials.
Compare costs and incentives in dollars
Ask for the complete cost, not just a headline commission or advertised advisory rate. Depending on the service, costs can include commissions or markups, asset-based advice charges, account-service fees, transaction costs, and expenses embedded in investments. Ask how both the platform and the representative earn revenue and what incentives or conflicts follow.

Translate percentage-based charges into dollars using the balance you expect to invest, and compare the service and restrictions alongside the price. Form CRS is a standardized starting point; use Form ADV and the account terms for detail.
4. Understand custody protections—and what they do not cover
Ask whether the brokerage firm and its clearing firm are members of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC), and confirm membership through SIPC’s own investor resources. A clearing firm may be different from the firm whose name appears on the app or account.

SIPC protection is limited customer protection in certain circumstances if a brokerage firm fails. It is not insurance against investment losses. As Investor.gov’s Ask and Check guidance puts it, SIPC “does not insure against losses attributable to a decline in the market value of your securities.” Membership is not a promise of returns or a general endorsement of a platform.
5. Compare candidate platforms on the same questions
If you are deciding between services, use each firm’s current Form CRS as a starting point and compare the same factors. Follow up in Form ADV and account terms where needed.

6. Stop when an offer shows scam warning signs
Pause and verify independently if you encounter pressure to act quickly, an unsolicited offer, unusual payment instructions, fabricated-looking testimonials, or a demand for extra money to release a withdrawal. Guaranteed high returns with little or no risk are a warning, not a reason to hurry. Investor.gov states: “There is no such thing as high guaranteed investment returns, and every investment involves risk.” See its fraud-prevention guidance.
Do not send more money or credentials to resolve a suspicious situation until you have independently confirmed the firm, contact, and account details. A legitimate firm’s name or a polished digital interface can be copied. If you suspect a securities scam, Investor.gov provides SEC reporting and help resources; you can also contact your state securities regulator.
7. Keep checking after the account is open
Review statements and trade confirmations promptly. Verify transactions and watch for changes to your contact information, account instructions, or linked bank details that you did not authorize. Report discrepancies quickly and keep written records of communications and account activity. The firm’s disclosures and agreement should explain how to contact support using verified channels.
