Before you trade in an iPhone for a U.S. carrier promotion, open the exact offer and verify five things: the eligible model, account and plan rules, condition standard, security-lock requirement, and submission deadline. Then answer the carrier’s device questions accurately, disable Find My iPhone and Activation Lock, and save the estimate and shipping confirmation. A quoted value is usually provisional: the carrier can change it after receiving and inspecting the phone.

The carrier pages reviewed on October 13, 2026 show why a generic “trade-in value” is not enough. Requirements differ by promotion and carrier, and terms can change. Use the current offer’s wording as the authority for your transaction.

Start with the exact promotion, not a general trade-in page

A carrier’s ordinary trade-in program and a phone-upgrade promotion can have different eligibility rules. Read the promotion’s complete terms before you send the device. Verizon specifically directs customers to the rules for the applicable offer in its mobile device deals and promos FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record these details while the offer is open:

  • Which iPhone models, storage capacities or other configurations qualify.
  • Whether the deal requires a new line, a particular plan, a specified customer status or an existing account.
  • Any account-activity requirement. Some Verizon promotions for existing customers require the traded device to have been active on a Verizon mobile account for 60 consecutive days; that is an offer rule, not a universal carrier requirement.
  • Whether the benefit is an instant credit, bill credits, an installment adjustment or another form of discount.
  • How long credits continue and whether an installment or service commitment is attached.
  • The date by which the trade-in must be submitted or received, plus the permitted return method.

There is no single deadline, plan requirement or credit duration that applies to every carrier deal. Keep the offer name, date and terms with your records so you can compare the final valuation with the promise you accepted.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Use this pre-trade checklist

  1. Open and save the offer terms. Capture the eligibility section, condition definition, credit schedule, deadline and any account or plan conditions. Promotions can be revised after you begin a trade-in.
  2. Identify the exact iPhone. Confirm the model, storage, color, carrier and identifying number requested by the trade-in flow. Verizon says its validation can include make, model, memory, color, storage and carrier. T-Mobile also asks for device details and condition answers. On the iPhone, check Settings > General > About and compare those details with the carrier’s form.
  3. Inspect the phone before answering condition questions. Check the front display, back glass, frame, cameras and buttons. Verify that the phone turns on and functions well enough to complete the carrier’s requested checks. Photograph existing marks before packing it.
  4. Check the battery for safety problems. Verizon identifies swelling, leaking and a battery that is too hot to touch as battery damage relevant to validation. AT&T’s surfaced instructions say the battery must be included. Do not improvise packaging or shipping for a damaged battery; follow the carrier’s handling instructions and contact it if the phone is swollen, leaking or unusually hot.
  5. Compare the screen with the offer’s definition. Verizon’s FAQ describes an uncracked, functioning front and back screen for the relevant requirements. T-Mobile says the front display must not be cracked or damaged. A damaged iPhone is therefore not automatically accepted or automatically rejected across all deals; the named promotion controls.
  6. Turn off security locks before handoff. Disable Find My iPhone and Activation Lock, and remove other password-protected security features the carrier identifies. A locked phone can be rejected or held from processing.
  7. Save the estimate and submission record. Keep screenshots or a PDF of the quoted value, the device answers, confirmation number, shipping label and tracking number. The estimate is evidence of what you submitted, not a guarantee of the final credit.
  8. Meet the stated return method and deadline. Use the carrier’s label or handoff process and retain proof of shipment or receipt. If the offer requires the device to arrive by a particular date, plan for transit time rather than mailing on the last day.

What each carrier’s published guidance tells you to verify

Carrier Device and condition checks Account or offer conditions Lock and valuation rules
Verizon Validation can include make, model, memory, color, storage, carrier, whether the phone turns on, battery damage and screen cracks. The applicable FAQ describes an uncracked, functioning front and back screen for relevant requirements. Rules depend on the promotion. Some existing-customer promotions require 60 consecutive days of prior activity for the traded device on a Verizon mobile account. Disable security features before sending. Verizon confirms the final value after receipt and validation.
T-Mobile The trade-in flow asks for model and other device details plus condition answers. Its stated eligibility check requires a front display without cracks or damage. Use the terms for the specific deal; the trade-in page does not establish one plan or customer rule for every promotion. Turn off activation locks before return. The submitted condition must match the phone that arrives for inspection.
AT&T The quote is conditional on the actual make, model, condition and operating condition. The flow requests an IMEI or serial number; surfaced instructions say the battery must be included. Offer-specific terms apply. AT&T Next Up guidance concerns an early-upgrade context and should not be generalized to every trade-in promotion. Disable Find My iPhone or Activation Lock. AT&T may adjust the quote after evaluating the device received.

These points come from the carriers’ U.S. pages: Verizon’s promotion FAQ, Verizon’s trade-in terms, T-Mobile’s trade-in page, and AT&T’s trade-in flow. They do not establish a common dollar value or credit period, so do not treat a figure from one offer as a cross-carrier comparison.

Check the iPhone’s identity before you quote it

Model and configuration

“An iPhone” is not a sufficient description for a promotion. The carrier may distinguish generations, storage capacities, colors or carrier variants. In Settings > General > About, note the model name, capacity and serial number. Match the result to the carrier’s model selector rather than choosing the closest-looking option. If the form asks for an IMEI, copy the number exactly; AT&T’s flow specifically requests an IMEI or serial number.

Carrier and account history

Some deals care about the network on which the device was active, not only its hardware. Verizon’s published example of a 60-consecutive-day requirement applies to some existing-customer promotions. Check whether your offer requires the iPhone to have been active on a particular account, whether a new line is required and whether changing plans would end credits.

Condition answers

Answer every question about cracks, damage, power and operation as it exists when you submit the phone. Do not describe a display as intact because a screen protector covers a crack, and do not omit a defect that is visible only at certain angles. The carrier’s inspection compares the physical device with the information used to generate the estimate.

Disable Find My iPhone and Activation Lock correctly

Activation security is a handoff requirement, not a cosmetic detail. Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T all identify Find My iPhone or another activation lock as an issue for acceptance or processing.

  1. On the iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, choose Find My, select Find My iPhone, and turn it off when prompted.
  2. Authenticate with the Apple Account password or device passcode requested by iOS.
  3. Sign out of the account if the carrier’s instructions require it, then verify that the phone no longer asks for the previous owner’s credentials during setup.
  4. Remove any other password, management or security feature that the carrier’s return instructions identify.

If the phone has already been mailed while still locked, contact the carrier promptly and follow its instructions. A carrier cannot reliably refurbish or reassign a device that remains tied to your account.

Understand what the inspection can change

The online number is an estimate until the carrier receives and validates the actual iPhone. Verizon’s terms state that final value follows receipt and validation. AT&T says quoted values are conditional and may be adjusted according to the device’s actual make, model, condition and operating condition.

A lower final value can result when the received phone differs from the submitted description, a screen or back crack is found, the phone does not turn on as represented, or battery damage is identified. The precise adjustment rules belong to the offer. Keep the original estimate, photographs, serial or IMEI, confirmation and tracking information so you can identify what changed.

If the estimate changes

  • Compare the inspection result with the offer’s condition definition, not with a generic trade-in page.
  • Check that the inspected model and identifying number match the phone you sent.
  • Review the carrier’s notice for the response or return deadline. Do not assume an unaccepted phone will automatically be returned without action.
  • Ask the carrier which condition finding changed the value and request the applicable terms for that promotion.

Practical decisions before you hand over the phone

Proceed when every critical box is checked

Proceed only when the model appears in the offer, the account and plan conditions fit your situation, the phone meets that offer’s screen and operating standard, the battery is safe to ship, Activation Lock is off, and you have a record of the deadline and estimate.

Pause when one fact is uncertain

Pause if you cannot identify the storage or IMEI, do not know whether the iPhone was active on the required account, or cannot tell whether a crack meets the promotion’s definition. Ask the carrier before submitting; selecting a favorable answer and hoping inspection overlooks the difference risks losing the promotional value.

Handle damaged batteries separately

A swollen, leaking or unusually hot battery is a safety issue. Verizon lists those conditions as damage, while AT&T’s surfaced instructions require the battery to be included. Use the carrier’s specific shipping and handling directions rather than placing a visibly damaged phone in ordinary mail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not generalize early-upgrade guidance

AT&T’s Next Up and Next Up Anytime support page addresses an early-upgrade context. Its instructions should not be treated as a universal requirement or benefit for every AT&T trade-in promotion.

Final handoff checklist

  • Exact promotion terms saved, including model list, plan or account rule, credit method and deadline.
  • Model, storage, color, carrier and IMEI or serial number verified.
  • Front display, back glass, power and operating condition honestly recorded.
  • Battery checked for swelling, leaking or excessive heat; shipping instructions reviewed.
  • Find My iPhone, Activation Lock and other requested security features disabled.
  • Estimate, confirmation, photos and tracking information retained.
  • Inspection and any revised valuation monitored after delivery.

For a U.S. carrier deal, eligibility is the intersection of the named promotion, the exact iPhone that arrives and the carrier’s inspection result. Checking those three points before shipping is the best way to avoid a rejected trade-in or an unexpected reduction in promotional credit.
