Before accepting an AT&T iPhone trade-in offer, verify five things in the transaction shown for your account: the exact promotion and target phone, your iPhone’s model and condition value, the plan and installment cost over the full term, when credits begin and what stops them, and the return deadline. “Up to” savings and “$0 per month” advertising describe a conditional stream of bill credits—not an instant discount that every iPhone receives.
Use the checklist below while the offer is on screen, save the offer details, and do not ship your old phone until you understand the total commitment and the consequences of cancelling service.
1. Identify the exact AT&T offer before looking at the headline price
AT&T promotions are tied to a particular phone, installment agreement, trade-in tier and wireless plan. Start by recording the offer name, the new phone’s storage configuration, whether it is for an upgrade or a new line, the required plan, the credit amount and the credit term. Public offer pages state that restrictions apply and that eligibility varies, so an advertisement cannot establish what your account or device qualifies for.

Read “$0 per month” as a calculation, not a cash price
As of October 13, 2026, AT&T’s deals page displays an iPhone 18 Pro at as low as $0 per month with an eligible trade-in and plan after 36 months of credits. The advertised monthly figure requires a 0% APR, 36-month installment agreement. A $0 down payment is for well-qualified customers, and tax on the phone’s full retail price is due at sale. The phone is therefore still financed at its normal installment price; the promotional credits are applied over time if you keep meeting the terms.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Separate a general advertisement from a named promotion
AT&T’s iPhone Duo promotion illustrates how specific the conditions can be. Its published terms state up to $1,200 off through 36 monthly credits when all of these requirements are met:
- An eligible smartphone trade-in with a minimum trade-in value of $230.
- A qualifying installment purchase of at least $1,999.99.
- Activation on AT&T Premium 2.0 at a minimum of $100 per month before taxes, fees and discounts.
Those thresholds belong to that promotion. Do not apply the $230 minimum, the $1,200 maximum or the Premium 2.0 requirement to another AT&T deal unless its own terms show the same conditions. Different target phones, plans and trade-in combinations can produce different credits.
2. Confirm that your iPhone qualifies at the value you need
Use the exact model and IMEI
Open AT&T’s trade-in valuation flow and enter the iPhone’s exact model or IMEI. Storage capacity, carrier version and model generation can affect the quote. Photograph or save the valuation result, including the quoted value and the date, because quoted values are valid only for the transaction period and program terms can change.

AT&T says value depends on the device, make, model and condition. Check the screen, back glass, camera lenses, buttons, ports, battery behavior and signs of liquid or structural damage. A phone that powers on but has a cracked display, disabled biometric sensor or nonfunctional camera may not receive the tier you selected. If the device you send does not match the description, the assessed value can be reduced and a promotion can become unavailable.

Check the minimum for the specific credit tier
For the iPhone Duo offer, the published $1,200 maximum requires at least $230 of trade-in value. Your iPhone can be accepted while still falling below that tier, so acceptance alone does not prove that you will receive the advertised maximum. Look for the value threshold attached to the exact offer in your order summary.
3. Calculate the commitment over the entire credit term
Compare the total obligation, not the promotional phone line shown in an advertisement. Write down each component before placing the order:
| Cost or condition | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Device installments | Retail price, 0% APR, number of payments and any down payment | Credits offset installments; they do not usually reduce the amount financed at checkout. |
| Wireless plan | Required plan name and monthly price for your line or account | The plan may cost more than your current service and can be required for every credit. |
| Taxes | Whether tax is calculated on full retail price and when it is collected | The deals page says tax on the full phone price is due at sale, even when the promotional monthly amount is $0. |
| Activation and other fees | One-time charges, upgrade fees and account-specific fees | These are not erased by a device credit. |
| Credit duration | Number of credits and amount per bill | Leaving early can end the stream before you receive its advertised total. |
For perspective, the Premium 2.0 condition in the iPhone Duo terms is at least $100 per month before taxes, fees and discounts. Thirty-six months at that minimum is $3,600 in service charges before any taxes, fees or discounts, and it is separate from the phone’s retail price and installments. Your actual account cost may be higher. Use your own bill and the order’s installment schedule rather than treating the phone’s net monthly figure as the price of the deal.
Record a simple total-cost comparison
Multiply the required monthly plan amount by the credit term, add the phone installments and one-time charges, then add applicable taxes. Subtract only the credits that the written offer promises for your exact trade-in and plan. If you would keep the line regardless of the promotion, compare the incremental cost of the required plan and fees; if you would otherwise use a cheaper plan, include the full difference for every month of the term.

4. Understand when bill credits start and what can stop them
Credits are delayed, not paid upfront
AT&T’s current trade-in deals page says bill credits can take two to three billing cycles to appear. The iPhone Duo terms say the 36 credits start within three bills. Your first one or two statements can therefore show the normal installment charge before the promotional credit is visible. Save the order confirmation and inspect each bill’s installment and credit lines.
Cancellation can make the remaining balance due
The iPhone Duo terms state that credits stop if service is cancelled and that the remaining device balance becomes due. This is a material difference from an instant rebate: ending service after receiving several credits does not preserve the unpaid credits. Ask AT&T to explain the exact result for your offer before cancelling a line.
Ask about actions not fully specified in the advertisement
Early payoff, upgrading before month 36, moving the device to another line, changing plans, suspending service or changing account ownership can affect eligibility. The public terms do not make every combination universal. Request a written answer tied to your order number and keep it with your receipt; do not assume a future upgrade or plan change leaves credits untouched.

5. Prepare the iPhone so data and activation locks cannot derail the trade-in
Complete these steps before packing the old phone:
- Back up your data. Confirm that photos, messages, contacts, authenticator access and any device-specific files are available on your replacement phone or in your chosen backup.
- Finish repairs and record the condition. Check Settings for Parts and Service History, note existing damage and photograph the phone powered on and powered off. These records help if the assessed condition is disputed.
- Sign out of services and erase the device. Remove personal accounts, then use the iPhone’s erase-all-content process. Do not send a phone that still displays your personal data.
- Turn off Find My and Activation Lock. An activation-locked phone can be unusable to the recipient and can delay processing or reduce value. Verify that the device no longer appears in your account’s device list.
- Handle cellular service. Remove a physical SIM. If the phone uses eSIM, contact the carrier as needed to suspend or transfer that service after confirming the new phone works.
- Remove accessories. Use AT&T’s packing instructions. Do not include a case, cable, power adapter or other accessory unless AT&T explicitly requests it; accessories are not part of the stated trade-in value.
6. Follow the return window and keep proof of delivery
Use the date on your transaction confirmation
AT&T’s deals page says an online trade-in should be sent within 30 days after activating the new phone. AT&T trade-in terms surfaced for the program also describe a 30-day window after accepting the trade-in credit or offer. Because those descriptions refer to different stages, use the specific deadline shown in your order or trade-in confirmation rather than choosing the later-looking date.

Choose store or prepaid shipping deliberately
The deal flow allows an in-store return or a prepaid mailing kit. If you mail the phone, use the supplied label or kit, photograph the packed device and label, and obtain a carrier acceptance receipt with tracking. Keep the tracking record until the trade-in is marked complete and the credits are visible. For an in-store handoff, request a dated receipt that identifies the IMEI or trade-in transaction.
Know the program limit
AT&T’s trade-in program terms indicate a limit of five devices per person in a 12-month period. If you are trading multiple phones, verify that the number of submissions and the account structure fit that limit before accepting separate offers.

Obtain a current quote for your exact iPhone from at least one alternative before you surrender it. An alternative may be a cash resale, another carrier’s promotion or an Apple trade-in estimate. The point is not to assume another option wins; it is to compare equivalent conditions.

Apple’s preparation guidance says its estimate depends on model and condition and that the received device must match the described condition. That is useful for preparing an iPhone, but it does not replace AT&T’s own offer terms or shipping instructions. Compare the actual dollar amount, timing and obligations shown in each current quote.

8. Troubleshoot the problems that most often change the result
The first bill has no credit
Check whether fewer than two or three billing cycles have passed, then compare the bill’s device installment with the order confirmation. If the expected start window has passed, contact AT&T with the promotion name, trade-in confirmation, IMEI and shipment or store receipt. Ask for the missing credit to be documented on the account.
The trade-in is marked as lower value
Compare AT&T’s condition assessment with your photographs and the condition answers you submitted. Ask which defect or mismatch changed the tier and whether the offer permits a return of the old phone. Do not discard the assessment notice or accept a revised value without understanding its effect on the 36-month credit schedule.
The phone is rejected for an activation lock
Remove Find My and Activation Lock remotely if the phone is still listed in your account, then follow AT&T’s instructions. If the device has already been shipped, contact support immediately with tracking; an activation lock can prevent normal processing.

9. A final decision checklist
- I saved the exact promotion, target phone, plan, credit amount and 36-month or other term.
- I verified my iPhone’s model, IMEI, condition and trade-in value in AT&T’s current flow.
- I calculated plan charges, installments, full-price tax, down payment and fees—not just the advertised phone payment.
- I know that credits can take two to three billing cycles and what cancellation, early payoff or a plan change does to them.
- I backed up and erased the phone, disabled Find My and Activation Lock, and handled SIM or eSIM service.
- I will ship or hand in the phone by the date on my transaction confirmation and retain proof.
- I compared a current alternative quote on value, timing, restrictions and exit costs.
If any box remains unchecked, pause the trade-in. The safest AT&T deal is the one whose written conditions, total service cost and exit consequences you can explain before giving up your iPhone.
