Prepare your OnePlus in this order: transfer and verify your data, remove accounts and screen locks, factory-reset the phone using the instructions for its exact model, take out SIM and memory cards, document its condition, read the live trade-in or sale terms, and package it as required. Do not reset first. A factory reset erases local data, and Google warns that not every app restores all settings and data.
The cited OnePlus trade-in instructions are for the United States. Deadlines, partners, payment methods and eligibility can differ elsewhere, so use the offer and terms shown for your country before you ship or hand over the phone.
1. Transfer your data before you erase anything
Move your information to your replacement phone, a computer or another storage destination while the old OnePlus still works. Google’s official Android guidance says to back up the old phone and clear it only after confirming that the copy is usable. A reset cannot recover files that existed only on the handset.

- Open several recent and older photos and videos on the destination, not just the backup summary.
- Check contacts, calendar entries, messages and files in the apps or folders where you expect them to appear.
- Confirm that authenticator apps, passkeys, note databases, downloaded documents and other app-specific data have their own transfer or export process.
- Check cloud-synced accounts from another device or a browser. A phone reset removes the local copy; it does not establish that separate cloud copies or copies on other devices have been deleted.
Google states, “Not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data.” Treat the backup as incomplete until you have opened important items on the destination and completed any app-specific transfer.

Prepare the credentials needed after the reset
Write down or securely retrieve the Google account address and password used on the phone, along with the current screen-lock method. Android may request security information during setup or when you remove an account. If you recently changed the Google password, Google’s reset guidance advises waiting 24 hours before performing a factory reset.
2. Remove accounts and locks before handing over the phone
Accounts and device locks can prevent the next owner or a trade-in processor from activating the handset. OnePlus’s US trade-in instructions specifically require passwords and locks to be removed before shipment.
Remove each Google account
On many Android versions the general route is Settings > Passwords & accounts > [Google account] > Remove account. OnePlus software and Android versions may label these screens differently; use the account section shown on your model. Repeat the removal for every Google account listed, not only the one you use most often.

Remove other account ties and security controls
- Sign out of manufacturer, work or school accounts that remain on the device.
- Disable the screen lock, fingerprint and face unlock after your data is safely transferred.
- Turn off any theft-protection, device-management or enterprise profile that you control, following the administrator’s removal procedure when applicable.
Do these account actions before choosing the reset command. Removing the Google account first follows Google’s checklist and reduces the chance that the recipient encounters an account-verification lock.

3. Factory-reset the exact OnePlus model
OnePlus manuals show that reset names and menu paths vary across generations and software versions. Use the reset instructions for the phone’s exact model and the labels currently displayed on it rather than relying on a path copied from another OnePlus device.
Reset from Settings when the phone works normally
- Keep the phone charged and connected to power if the battery is low.
- Open the system settings and locate the reset or system-reset section. The command may be labelled
Erase all data (factory reset)or a close variant. - Read the warning, confirm that the Google and other accounts have been removed, and authenticate when requested.
- Confirm the erase and allow the phone to restart without interrupting it.
- When the setup welcome screen appears, stop there. Do not sign back into your account or restore your personal data.
The reset erases data stored on the phone. It is not proof that a file’s other copies in cloud services, messaging accounts or backups have been removed; those copies are managed separately through the relevant service.
If the displayed path does not match the manual
Search the phone’s own settings for “reset” and compare the result with the model-specific OnePlus manual. Older manuals are useful examples but may not match current software. If the phone cannot reach Settings, use the recovery-reset procedure documented for that model, taking care to identify the correct key combination before proceeding; a wrong recovery action can erase data or change system settings.
4. Remove the physical cards
Before packing or handing over the device, inspect every tray and slot. OnePlus’s US trade-in guidance says to remove the SIM and any memory or data-storage card. A microSD card can contain photographs, downloads or app files that a factory reset of the phone’s internal storage does not remove.

- Power the phone off after the reset reaches the setup screen.
- Eject the SIM tray with the supplied tool or an appropriate eject pin.
- Remove the SIM and microSD card, if the model has one, and keep them for your next device or dispose of them securely.
- Check for a second SIM position and inspect the case, tray and ports for anything else that belongs to you.
5. Record the phone’s condition accurately
Whether you request a trade-in quote or sell directly, describe the device as it is now, not as you hope it will be judged. Record the exact model, storage capacity, color if requested, carrier or network status, and known faults. Include screen cracks, dead pixels, camera or microphone problems, charging issues, missing buttons, liquid exposure and battery behavior when the form asks about them.
OnePlus’s US FAQ asks sellers to photograph the front, back and, where applicable, the IMEI screen, as well as the device alongside the shipping label. Take clear, date-stamped photos before packing. Keep the IMEI image private except when a legitimate trade-in or buyer process requires it; the number can identify the handset.
Make sure the particulars submitted for an offer are true and accurate. A processor can revalue or reject a phone when its actual condition, model or storage differs from the description.

Compare the two routes using the terms that affect your actual outcome. The available evidence provides operational details for the cited US OnePlus program, but it does not establish a numerical comparison with private-sale platforms. Check current local offers rather than assuming one route always pays more.

For a US OnePlus offer, the official trade-in partner determines market value. The cited US FAQ does not identify that partner by name. Because offers and terms can change, open the current quote and read its conditions immediately before shipping.
7. Follow the shipment rules for a US OnePlus trade-in
The cited US FAQ says the seller must ship within 21 calendar days after receiving the successful trade-in email. This is a program deadline, not a general rule for every country or future offer. Confirm the deadline on your own order.
- Use the shipping label supplied with the trade-in order.
- Use your own box, as the US FAQ instructs, and choose packaging that holds the phone firmly during transit.
- Wrap and cushion the device so the screen, corners and camera lenses cannot strike the box.
- Remove SIM cards, memory cards, accessories and personal items before sealing the package.
- Photograph the reset setup screen, the packed phone, the label and the sealed parcel. Keep the tracking receipt and any acceptance record.
The FAQ says OnePlus’s processing partner evaluates the phone and professionally wipes data. That service does not replace your preparation: back up the phone, remove accounts and locks, take out cards and perform the factory reset yourself before shipment.
8. If you sell privately, agree the handoff details in writing
A private sale has no single universal procedure. Before releasing the phone, record the agreed model, storage, condition, included items, price and any known defect. Decide whether the buyer will collect it or whether you will ship it, who pays shipping, what evidence is needed if the parcel is damaged, and when payment is considered complete.

Meet in a safe location for an in-person exchange, allow the buyer to inspect the reset setup screen, and verify that the payment has settled in your account before handing over the device. For a shipment, retain the tracking number and the same condition photos used in the listing. No particular marketplace, fee schedule or buyer-protection policy is established here, so read the service’s current rules if you use one.
9. Fix common preparation problems
You changed your Google password today
Wait 24 hours before resetting, as Google advises. Keep the phone powered and connected while you complete the waiting period, then remove the account and reset it.
You cannot find the Google account removal menu
Use Settings search for “accounts” or “passwords and accounts.” OnePlus and Android labels differ by software version. Open each listed Google account and choose its removal command; do not assume deleting one account removes all of them.

Confirm that the battery is charged, the phone is not completing an update, and the screen lock credentials are correct. Consult the exact model’s OnePlus manual for its recovery-reset path. If the phone still cannot reset, disclose the fault to the trade-in provider or buyer instead of claiming that it has been wiped.
The quote changes after inspection
Compare the revised amount with the condition description and the offer’s adjustment rules. Decide whether to accept the revised value or use the return option stated in the terms. Keep the photos and the original quote so you can identify where the assessment differs.
You discover a card or personal item after shipping
Contact the program or carrier immediately using the order or tracking information. Do not assume a processing-center wipe will recover a removed card or return a personal item.
Final handoff standard
The phone is ready only when the destination contains and opens the data you need, every account and lock has been removed, the model-specific reset has reached the setup screen, physical cards and personal items are out, the condition record is saved, and the current trade-in or sale terms—including deadline, packaging and payment—are understood. The Google Android Help instruction captures the purpose: “Before you recycle, donate or trade in your old device, clear your data and reset your device to the factory settings to protect your personal information.”
