Before you accept an online trade-in offer, verify five things: the appliance is eligible, the information you submitted is accurate, the quoted value is not merely conditional, collection requirements are practical, and the transaction leaves you with a record of what happened. An offer can be a discount on a new purchase, a payment after inspection, or a recycling and haul-away arrangement; those outcomes are not interchangeable.
Policies differ by country, retailer and appliance category. The examples below illustrate how major programs state their rules in the United States, the Philippines and India, but they do not establish availability or terms where you live.
1. Confirm that the exact appliance is eligible
Do not rely on a broad label such as “old refrigerator” or “working washing machine.” Online forms usually accept only specified categories, brands, models, capacities, ages or conditions. Before submitting anything, identify the appliance precisely and compare it with the program’s eligibility wording.
Check the identity and specifications
- Record the manufacturer, model number, serial number and capacity from the rating plate or owner documentation.
- Check whether the program accepts that appliance category, brand and model family.
- Confirm any age, size, energy-rating or regional restrictions.
- Describe the condition accurately: working, partially working, non-working, damaged, missing parts or cosmetically worn.
Samsung Philippines, for example, states that the old product must match the declared brand and specifications. That is a program-specific rule, not a universal standard. If a form asks for a model or capacity and you guess, the assessor can reasonably treat the declaration as inaccurate.

Establish ownership and authorization
Check whether you must own the appliance outright. Some programs may require the person placing the order to be the owner or to have authority to surrender it. If the appliance belongs to a landlord, employer, relative or leasing company, obtain written authorization before collection. Keep purchase or ownership records if the terms request them.
Check whether a new purchase is required
Some trade-ins are not standalone sales. LG’s U.S. terms describe qualifying appliances exchanged for a discount connected to an identified new LG purchase. If your new order is canceled, changed or delivered to a different address, the trade-in benefit may also change. Read the offer’s connection to the new purchase before treating the displayed amount as money you will receive independently.
2. Determine what the quoted value actually means
The number shown online may represent a purchase discount, a later payment, or the value of a recycling service. Ask which one applies and when it is applied.

Do not compare a $300 purchase discount with a $300 cash offer as though they were equivalent. A discount may depend on completing a replacement purchase, while a payment may depend on a separate inspection and approval.
Save the offer before it changes
Capture the quoted amount, the date, the appliance details you entered, the terms displayed at checkout and any confirmation number. Save the email or download a PDF if available. Include screenshots that show whether the quote is labeled estimated, promotional, conditional or final.

Prices and exchange values can be market-specific and offer-specific. LG India’s published exchange terms state that the final value follows evaluation; figures shown for one offer should not be treated as a current universal price for every appliance or city.
3. Read the inspection and adjustment rules
Assume an initial quote is conditional unless the terms expressly guarantee it. LG U.S. says its trade-in discount is subject to inspection and may be revised when findings differ from the customer’s declaration. LG India likewise says the final exchange quote follows evaluation. These provisions are examples of how programs can operate, not a rule that every provider uses.
Match your declaration to what an assessor will see
Before collection, test the appliance using normal, safe operation. Note faults instead of concealing them. For a refrigerator, that might include cooling performance, damaged shelves or a broken seal. For a washer or dryer, record leaks, error codes, unusual noise and missing accessories. Do not perform risky repairs solely to improve a quote.
Take dated photographs or a short video of the appliance powered on, its model plate, visible damage and included parts. This does not guarantee a dispute outcome, but it creates a contemporaneous record of the condition you declared.
Ask how a disagreement is handled
Find the exact consequence if the assessor lowers the value: can you reject the revised offer, cancel the exchange, pay a collection charge, or proceed at the reduced value? Some terms may state that the appliance is surrendered once collected. Samsung Philippines says a collected old product cannot be returned under that program. Do not assume another retailer offers a return option; use the actual terms for your transaction.

4. Get collection, delivery and preparation requirements in writing
A favorable value is not useful if the appliance cannot be collected under the stated conditions. Confirm the operational details before the delivery date.
Confirm timing and handover point
- Is pickup scheduled separately, or does it occur when the replacement is delivered?
- What date or time window applies, and who contacts you if it changes?
- Must the old appliance be at the entrance, loading area or another designated point?
- Does the collection team carry it from inside the home, or must you move it yourself?
- Are stairs, narrow doors, elevators, parking restrictions or remote locations excluded?
Samsung Philippines requires the old product to be uninstalled and ready at the designated point during delivery. That requirement is specific to that program, but it illustrates why “free collection” should not be interpreted as full in-home moving service.
Prepare the appliance safely
- Empty food, water, detergent and other contents.
- Disconnect electricity, water, gas and drain lines only when it is safe and permitted; use a qualified technician for gas or hard-wired connections.
- Defrost and dry refrigeration equipment if the instructions require it.
- Remove loose shelves, racks or accessories only if the program tells you to; keep included parts together.
- Secure doors, drums and drawers for movement without creating a hazard.
Ask whether the replacement crew will disconnect the old appliance or whether that is your responsibility. A carrier may refuse collection if the unit is still connected, leaking, unsafe or inaccessible.
5. Check what happens after collection
Ask who receives the appliance and what route is promised: resale, refurbishment, parts recovery, recycling or disposal. The answer may affect your environmental and record-keeping needs, but do not assume that a trade-in automatically means certified recycling.
Request disposal evidence when it matters
U.S. Department of Energy rebate-program guidance describes arrangements in which retailers or recyclers collect appliances and programs may require documentation of proper disposal. That guidance describes program design, not a promise that every retailer provides a certificate. If you need proof for a rebate, landlord, building manager or business record, ask in advance what document is issued, by whom and when.

Keep the collection confirmation, receipt, transfer record or disposal certificate with the original quote. If no document is offered, record the collector’s name, date, appliance serial number and the terms that describe the destination.
6. Protect data and personal information
Many large appliances contain no user data, but connected refrigerators, smart ovens, robot vacuums, displays and appliances paired with mobile apps can retain accounts, Wi-Fi credentials, usage history or stored content. LG U.S. states: “You are responsible for backing up and/or deleting data on your Qualifying Device.” That statement concerns the qualifying device in that program; it is not evidence that every appliance stores personal data or that every provider uses identical wording.
- Back up anything you need, such as recipes, photos, schedules or diagnostic records.
- Sign out of the manufacturer’s app and remove the appliance from your account.
- Factory-reset the appliance using its current settings menu.
- Remove saved Wi-Fi networks, voice-assistant links, payment details and paired phones.
- Delete removable storage, USB devices or memory cards.
- After reset, verify that your account no longer lists the appliance.
Do not erase a serial number or rating label that the collector needs for identification. Separate personal data from physical ownership records: retain your quote and receipts while removing data from the appliance itself.

Before entering payment or identity information, check the company behind the offer, the total cost and the cancellation and refund rules. U.S. Federal Trade Commission online-shopping advice emphasizes checking the seller and the terms, including total price and refund policies. For a trade-in, also inspect delivery charges, installation fees, collection fees, taxes and any condition-related deductions.

Look for warning signs
- The site does not clearly identify the seller, service area or customer-support channel.
- The offer asks for payment to “unlock” a trade-in value without explaining the charge.
- The terms are inaccessible until after you submit sensitive information.
- Customer service cannot explain inspection, refusal or cancellation procedures.
- The confirmation omits the appliance model, quoted value or collection appointment.
Use the provider’s official checkout or support channel rather than an unsolicited message. Verify the web address carefully and retain a copy of the terms you accepted.

8. Compare offers using the same questions
When two programs appear similar, compare them in a single worksheet. A higher headline value may be less useful if it requires difficult preparation or can be reduced at pickup.

Fill every cell from the provider’s current terms. If a detail is not stated, treat that absence as a question to resolve with customer service rather than an implied benefit.
9. A practical pre-collection checklist
- Photograph the appliance, model and serial labels, accessories and visible damage.
- Save the completed form, quote, terms, order number and collection instructions.
- Confirm ownership or obtain authorization from the owner.
- Verify the replacement order, delivery address and any purchase-link condition.
- Ask who disconnects and moves the appliance, and prepare the route.
- Empty, clean, defrost or secure the appliance as required.
- Remove accounts, paired devices and stored data from connected appliances.
- Confirm the appointment and designated handover point in writing.
- At collection, record the date, collector, appliance identity and any revised assessment.
- Obtain a receipt or disposal record when the program offers one, and retain it with your transaction file.
10. What to do if collection is refused or the value changes
Do not argue from a generic promise or another company’s policy. Photograph the condition and access issue, ask the collector to state the reason, and contact the provider through the support channel listed in your confirmation. Request the applicable clause and the available choices: rescheduling, accepting the revised value, canceling, or paying a stated fee. If the appliance has already been taken, ask for written confirmation of its status before making another arrangement.
Escalate only through the provider’s documented complaint process or the consumer-protection body relevant to your country. Keep communications factual and attach the original declaration, quote and collection record.
11. Local availability is part of eligibility
The examples in this guide come from programs in the U.S., Philippines and India. They do not prove that an equivalent offer exists in another country, city or service area. Before scheduling delivery, confirm that your address is covered, the appliance category is accepted locally, and the terms shown at checkout are current for your market. A retailer’s national advertising may not apply to every regional delivery route.
