Before towing a camping trailer, verify the loaded weights, hitch connection, safety chains, breakaway system, tires, wheels, brakes, lights, cargo, mirrors and roadside equipment. A trailer that is within a vehicle’s advertised maximum in an empty or ideal configuration can still exceed a rating once passengers, luggage, fuel, water and tongue weight are added. Use the owner’s manuals and certification labels for your exact vehicle, trailer, hitch and axles; if any check fails, do not tow until it is corrected.
1. Confirm that the complete loaded combination is within its ratings
Start with capacity, not the trailer’s marketing description or a single headline towing figure. Compare the actual loaded tow vehicle and trailer with every applicable limit in the vehicle owner’s manual, the trailer certification plate and manual, and the hitch and axle ratings. The lowest relevant limit controls.
Account for people, cargo and tongue weight
- Count the driver and every passenger in the tow vehicle.
- Include luggage, tools, coolers, camping equipment, fuel and any accessories added after purchase.
- Include the trailer’s cargo, water, propane and batteries at the weights you will actually carry.
- Include the trailer’s tongue (coupler) load in the tow vehicle’s payload calculation when the vehicle manufacturer requires it.
- Stay below the vehicle’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), axle ratings, payload limit and any maximum tongue-weight limit.
- Stay below the trailer’s GVWR, each axle rating, tire ratings and the hitch’s rated capacity.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) explains that the trailer identification and certification information provides capacity data and warns against exceeding GVWR. Towing capability is generally a manufacturer recommendation, so questions about adding a trailer to a particular vehicle’s load should go to that vehicle’s manufacturer. Exact calculations cannot be made from a generic checklist.

| Document or component | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Tow-vehicle owner’s manual and door-label information | Maximum trailer weight, payload, GVWR, axle ratings, tongue-weight limit, required equipment and any speed or transmission instructions. |
| Trailer certification plate and manual | Trailer GVWR, axle ratings, tire and wheel requirements, brake requirements and loading instructions. |
| Hitch receiver, ball mount and hitch ball | Rated trailer and tongue capacity, correct ball diameter and shank, attachment method and any weight-distribution requirements. |
| Brake controller or integrated brake system | Compatibility with the trailer brakes, adjustment procedure and test instructions. |
2. Schedule maintenance before departure
Do not wait until the morning of a long trip to discover a worn bearing, loose fastener or inoperative brake. Dexter’s operation and maintenance manual recommends doing some checks two to three weeks before travel, leaving time for parts and repairs. Review service records, inspect the trailer after storage and address defects before loading.

- Confirm that required inspections, registration, insurance and licensing are current for your jurisdiction.
3. Inspect and connect the hitch, coupler and safety systems
Match the coupler and hitch ball
- Confirm that the coupler size matches the hitch-ball diameter and that both are rated for the loaded trailer.
- Lower the coupler completely onto the ball. Close the latch until it is fully seated in its locked position.
- Install the coupler’s retaining pin, lock or other secondary security device as specified by the manufacturer.
- Apply a firm upward and downward check to verify that the coupler cannot lift off the ball. Do not tow if the latch is difficult to close, will not lock or does not capture the ball correctly.
Attach safety chains correctly
Connect both chains to the designated attachment points on the tow vehicle or hitch, not to a convenient but unapproved bracket. Many equipment instructions, including guidance from Wisconsin’s transportation department and the Tesla Model 3 manual, call for crossing the chains under the trailer tongue. The crossed chains can help support the tongue if the coupler separates.
- Leave enough slack for the tightest turn you expect.
- Keep the chains high enough that they do not drag on the road.
- Do not twist, knot or shorten them in a way that reduces their rated strength.
- Follow the chain and hitch maker’s attachment instructions if they differ from a general diagram.
Connect the breakaway system
If the trailer has electric brakes and a breakaway switch, attach the breakaway cable to the tow vehicle as directed by the trailer or brake-system manufacturer. It should have enough slack to allow turns without pulling the switch, but it must not drag. Do not clip it to the safety chain itself unless the manufacturer explicitly permits that attachment. Check the breakaway battery’s condition and charge where a battery is fitted. The system is an emergency device, not a substitute for a properly latched coupler.
Plug in the trailer wiring
Insert the electrical plug fully into the tow-vehicle socket. Inspect the connector, pins, sealing boot and visible wiring for corrosion, cuts or loose terminals. Use the prescribed support or cable loop so the plug cannot contact the road during a turn.

4. Check tires, wheels and wheel fasteners
Inspect every tire, including the spare
Examine tow-vehicle and trailer tires for cuts, bulges, cracking, exposed cords, punctures, uneven wear and objects lodged in the tread. Check the spare as well; a spare with the wrong load rating or severe age-related deterioration is not an adequate replacement.
Inflate each tire to the pressure specified by the tire, trailer or vehicle manufacturer for the intended load. NHTSA and other safety guidance recommend checking pressure when the tires are cold, before driving has heated them. Do not copy a pressure from a generic checklist or assume the number molded into a tire is the correct operating pressure for your rig. A tire-pressure gauge is useful only when paired with the applicable specification.
Verify wheels and fasteners
Check for bent rims, cracks and damage around the wheel studs. Tighten wheel nuts or bolts to the torque specified in the relevant manual, using the correct tightening sequence and a calibrated torque wrench when required. Torque is equipment-specific; a value from another trailer can be unsafe. After a wheel has been removed or replaced, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for any required recheck.

5. Test the trailer brakes and all lights
Brake operation
Confirm that the trailer brake system is present when required, connected to the tow vehicle and adjusted or synchronized according to its system instructions. Use the brake controller’s prescribed test procedure at low speed in a safe area. The trailer should slow smoothly without locking, pulling to one side or pushing the tow vehicle. If the controller shows a fault, the brakes feel uneven or the breakaway test fails, stop and repair the system before entering traffic.

With the trailer connected and the tow vehicle ignition in the required position, test tail lamps, brake lamps, left and right turn signals, marker lamps, license-plate illumination and hazard flashers where fitted. Have another person observe, or use a reflective surface if you are alone. Clean dirty lenses and repair intermittent operation rather than relying on a temporary wiggle of the plug.
6. Load the trailer to prevent sway and movement
Secure everything against shifting or escape
Place heavy items where the trailer and vehicle manuals specify, then restrain them so they cannot slide, fall or blow out. Close and latch every storage door. Recheck straps, tie-downs, propane-bottle restraints, bicycle racks and exterior cargo after loading. An unsecured load can injure road users; NHTSA attributes crashes involving objects in the road and unsecured loads to about 850 deaths and almost 19,000 injuries each year. The cited NHTSA page does not state a publication year for those figures.

Follow the actual manufacturer’s distribution guidance
Do not treat one tongue-weight percentage as universal. Dexter gives a general guide for trailer types, while the Tesla Model 3 manual specifies a different model-specific range. Those examples demonstrate why the correct target must come from the instructions for your exact vehicle and trailer.
- Avoid concentrating heavy cargo at the extreme rear; rear-heavy loading can promote sway.
- Keep axle and compartment loads within their individual limits.
- Reweigh or redistribute if adding water, fuel, firewood or other dense supplies changes the planned balance.
- Close all hatches and verify that nothing can spill onto the road.
7. Set the trailer level and establish a clear view
Check the connected attitude
With the trailer loaded and coupled, check that it sits level or in the position required by its manufacturer. An unsuitable ball height, sagging suspension or incorrect weight-distribution setup can alter handling and ground clearance. Follow the hitch and trailer instructions for any weight-distribution or sway-control equipment; do not adjust it by guesswork.
Adjust mirrors
Set the tow vehicle’s side mirrors so you can see along both sides of the trailer and identify approaching traffic. The trailer should not block the required rearward view. If the standard mirrors cannot provide the legally required field of view, use approved extensions or equipment for your jurisdiction.

8. Pack a practical roadside kit
NHTSA’s road-trip guidance includes a tire-pressure gauge, a jack and ground mat, a flashlight and basic repair tools. Add wheel chocks and any equipment specifically required by your trailer or vehicle.
- Wheel chocks sized for the trailer’s weight and terrain.
- A jack and support surface rated for the trailer and suitable for its designated lifting point.
- Correctly rated spare tire, wheel hardware and the tools needed to change it.
- Flashlight, reflective warning devices, gloves and basic hand tools.
- Spare fuses or bulbs only when they match the vehicle and trailer specifications.
Roadside equipment does not make an overloaded, damaged or poorly connected trailer safe. It is for handling a properly prepared rig after an unexpected problem.
9. Perform a final walk-around before moving
- Recheck the coupler latch and retaining pin.
- Confirm both safety chains are crossed as directed, attached to rated points and clear of the pavement.
- Verify the breakaway cable is connected correctly, has turning slack and is not dragging.
- Confirm the electrical plug is fully seated and the cable cannot contact the road.
- Walk around all tires and wheels; verify cold pressures and look for fresh damage.
- Test brakes, tail lamps, brake lamps, turn signals and marker lamps.
- Check that doors, windows, awnings, steps, stabilizers and storage latches are secured.
- Remove wheel chocks, release the parking brake only when ready to move and make sure no person or animal is near the trailer.
10. Make a cautious first movement and respond to sway
After the walk-around, move a short distance in a safe area and apply the brakes gently to confirm that the trailer tracks and stops normally. Recheck the connection and lights after this initial movement and again during a long trip if you stop for fuel or rest.
Recommended Free Tools
If the trailer begins to sway, the UK government’s towing guidance advises easing off the accelerator and reducing speed gently. It identifies excessive speed and incorrect loading as possible causes. Avoid harsh braking on a bend; reduce speed before hazards and keep steering smooth. This advice applies to England, Scotland and Wales and does not replace the rules or instructions that apply where you are driving. If sway continues, stop in a safe place and correct the cause rather than trying to drive through it.
11. Separate legal requirements from good maintenance practice
Rules differ by country, state and local jurisdiction. The GOV.UK towing checklist covers England, Scotland and Wales and includes local licensing and legal requirements. United States requirements can vary by state, and vehicle towing limits remain manufacturer-specific. A Wisconsin chain dimension, a UK licensing rule or a single manufacturer’s tongue-weight range must not be presented as a universal rule. Check the regulations for your route and the exact manuals for your equipment.
When to stop and not tow
- The loaded combination exceeds any applicable rating or the capacity cannot be established.
- The coupler will not fully latch, the hitch ball is incompatible or a retaining device is missing.
- A safety chain, breakaway cable or electrical connector cannot be attached as specified.
- A tire has structural damage, the pressure is unknown or a wheel fastener cannot be torqued correctly.
- Trailer brakes or required lights fail their test.
- Cargo shifts, doors will not latch or the trailer cannot be set up as required.
- You cannot obtain a clear rear view or meet the legal equipment requirements for the trip.
Resolve the failed check, obtain qualified service or change the load and setup before towing. A checklist is valuable because it gives you a reason to stop before a small defect becomes a loss-of-control event.
