Before making Linux your only desktop, prove that your real work—not just your favorite app names—will function. List the programs, files, games, peripherals and online services you rely on, then test each essential task through a native Linux app, a browser, a compatibility layer or a replacement. Keep your current operating system available until those tests pass.
Start with a complete workflow inventory
Compatibility decisions fail when people check only whether an app has a Linux download. Your work may depend on a particular plug-in, file format, macro, device utility or sign-in flow that is invisible in the app’s name. Make an inventory of everything you open in a normal week, including occasional tasks that would stop work if they failed.
Record the task, not merely the application
For every program or service, write down the exact outcome you need. “Spreadsheet” might mean opening ordinary tables, running Excel macros, refreshing a data connection, preserving a complex template and sending the file to a colleague without layout changes. “Video meetings” might include virtual backgrounds, screen sharing, recording, headset controls and joining from a browser. Those details determine whether a web version or replacement is acceptable.
- Productivity: documents, spreadsheets, presentations, databases, macros, fonts, mail rules and document-signing tools.
- Creative work: project files, color management, RAW formats, fonts, plug-ins, hardware panels, export presets and client hand-off requirements.
- Development and technical work: compilers, SDKs, containers, virtual machines, proprietary drivers, serial devices and corporate repositories.
- Communication: chat, meetings, screen sharing, notification integration, webcam controls and file-sharing permissions.
- Storage and identity: cloud-sync behavior, offline folders, password-manager browser extensions, single-sign-on and encrypted drives.
- Hardware utilities: printer and scanner controls, firmware updaters, VPN clients, remote-access software, docking-station tools and programmable keyboards or mice.
- Entertainment: each game, its launcher, anti-cheat system, controller, headset and required frame-rate or display features.
Add the files you must continue editing: spreadsheets with macros, presentation templates, design projects, databases, recorded media and archives. A compatibility listing can identify broad categories and likely gaps, but its entries change; confirm the current position with the software publisher before you commit.

Mark what is essential
Separate “must work on day one” from “would be nice.” For each essential item, note whether you can accept a browser workflow, occasional dual-booting, a virtual machine, exporting to another format or replacing the application. This turns a vague migration into a set of pass-or-fail tests.
Understand the four ways an app can work
“Linux-compatible” describes several different experiences. Treating them as interchangeable is the fastest way to discover a missing feature after switching.
| Path | What it means | Questions to test |
|---|---|---|
| Native Linux application | The developer supplies a Linux build or package. | Does it include the edition, plug-ins, file formats, hardware acceleration and update channel you need? |
| Browser application | You use the service through a supported browser instead of a desktop installation. | Which features work offline? Can it open, save and preserve your files? Are macros, extensions, local-device access and collaboration controls present? |
| Compatibility layer | A tool such as Wine-based technology translates or implements parts of Windows software behavior. | Does your exact version install, authenticate, print, update and run its plug-ins? Will a future update break it, and will the vendor support the setup? |
| Replacement application | A different Linux program performs a similar job. | Can it handle your formats, workflow, shortcuts, color profile, automation and team hand-offs without costly retraining? |
A browser version can be excellent for routine editing while still lacking desktop parity. A compatibility layer can launch an application while leaving its vendor unwilling to troubleshoot it. A replacement may be technically capable but incompatible with a client’s required file format. Record the limitations of the path you are choosing rather than counting every path as a full equivalent.
Will it run on Linux? Check productivity and file compatibility
Office documents and collaboration
A current compatibility guide lists the desktop versions of Microsoft Office as unavailable on Linux while browser versions are available. That is a broad guide-level description, not a promise that every browser feature matches the desktop edition. Test the documents you actually use: formulas, pivot tables, macros, add-ins, external links, fonts, tracked changes, comments, print layouts and password protection. Open a copy in the browser, edit it, download it and compare the result with the original desktop workflow.
Also test collaboration boundaries. Ask a colleague to open your edited file in the software they use, then have them return a revision. Check whether comments, revision history, embedded objects and page breaks survive. If your organization requires a desktop macro or a plug-in that the browser cannot run, classify the task as needing a fallback rather than assuming ordinary editing is enough.

Mail, cloud storage and passwords
Confirm that your mail provider supports the browser and that calendars, address books, shared mailboxes, rules and offline access behave as required. For cloud storage, test selective sync, conflict handling, large-file uploads, shared links and files that must remain available without an internet connection. A web portal may expose every file while offering no reliable offline copy.
Check your password manager’s Linux desktop client or browser extension, hardware-key support and autofill behavior. If your employer uses a VPN, remote desktop or device-compliance check, verify that the Linux client is supported for your distribution and account type. A login page that works in a browser does not prove that network access, certificate installation or split tunneling will work.
Evaluate creative and specialist applications by feature
The same compatibility guide reports that Adobe Creative Cloud does not support Linux, while alternatives exist for some creative tasks. Do not interpret that as proof that any one alternative is interchangeable. Compare the features that determine whether a project can move safely.
Use a feature-and-file test
- Collect representative source files, including the largest and most complex project you routinely handle.
- List required plug-ins, fonts, color profiles, cameras, tablets, control surfaces and export formats.
- Open or import a copy in the proposed Linux application and inspect layers, masks, text, metadata, linked assets and effects.
- Export to the format your client, teacher or production partner requires, then have that person open it in their normal software.
- Measure the manual work introduced by conversion: missing effects, flattened layers, changed colors, substituted fonts or altered timing can outweigh a free license.
For computer-aided design, scientific instruments, accounting packages and other specialist tools, the decisive issue may be a driver, database connector or certified plug-in rather than the main program. Ask the vendor or your organization’s administrator whether Linux is a supported configuration, and save that answer with your migration notes.
Games: test every important title
Steam Play and Valve’s Proton project provide a way for some Windows-only Steam games to run on Linux through Wine. Proton is a compatibility mechanism, not a guarantee for a particular title. Anti-cheat systems, launchers, digital-rights checks, updates, multiplayer services and unusual controllers can each change the result.

A practical game check
- List the games you play regularly, including games installed through separate launchers.
- Check each title’s listed operating-system compatibility and hardware requirements in Steam or the publisher’s documentation.
- Install and launch the exact title on the computer you intend to use; do not rely only on a report from a different graphics card or distribution.
- Play a complete session: sign in, join multiplayer, use voice chat, connect the controller, change display settings and suspend or resume the computer.
- Test after a normal game update. A title that works today may need a different Proton version or a publisher fix later.
Keep a fallback for a game that is central to your leisure time, especially when competitive anti-cheat or a separate launcher is involved. A high benchmark frame rate is irrelevant if the required server will not accept the Linux session.

Linux support is a property of a particular distribution, kernel, driver combination and device—not just a model name. Before changing the operating system, test the machine you will use.
- Wireless networking, wired networking and Bluetooth pairing.
- Graphics acceleration, multiple monitors, HDR if required, native resolution and high refresh rates.
- Speakers, microphones, headsets, webcam controls and hardware mute switches.
- Sleep, wake, lid-close behavior, battery reporting, suspend and resume.
- Printers, scanners, label makers, drawing tablets, card readers and other specialized USB devices.
- Docks, external storage, controllers, hotkeys and programmable peripherals.
Ubuntu’s certified-hardware program identifies devices that Canonical says receive device-specific optimization and reliability or performance testing. Certification is a useful signal when choosing hardware, but it does not certify every accessory, application or workflow attached to that device. Check the exact model and still test the peripherals that would prevent you from working.
Look for failure before migration
Use the intended distribution on the target computer before committing. Verify that the display uses the expected refresh rate, the webcam appears in your meeting software, audio switches correctly between speakers and a dock, and the printer produces a complete page. Test unplugging and reconnecting the dock, waking from sleep and pairing Bluetooth again. These transitions often expose problems that a short application launch will not.
Compare your options against the work you must preserve
Use the following criteria for each essential item. A path that wins on licensing cost can still lose on file fidelity or support effort.

| Criterion | What a passing result looks like |
|---|---|
| Required feature coverage | Every day-one function, plug-in, macro or device control works, or you have an accepted substitute. |
| File and collaboration compatibility | Your real files round-trip through colleagues and customers without unacceptable changes. |
| Offline access | You can continue essential work during an outage and synchronize safely afterward. |
| Hardware and peripheral support | The machine, displays, audio, camera, printer, dock and specialist devices operate through normal reconnects and updates. |
| Vendor support and updates | The publisher supports your Linux distribution or the chosen workaround has a maintained update path. |
| Fallback effort | You know when to use another operating system, how to access the needed files and who will maintain that arrangement. |
Score only evidence from your own tests or a current vendor statement. Do not award a pass because an app appears in a compatibility list, a forum post says “works,” or a similarly named replacement exists.

Ubuntu describes two broad installation choices: replace the existing operating system or install Ubuntu alongside it. The second approach lets you validate work and games before making Linux your sole environment. Whichever route you choose, preserve important data before changing partitions or operating systems, and verify your essential workflows first.
- Back up documents, project files, browser data, encryption keys and recovery information to storage you can access independently of the computer.
- Write down the applications, versions, licenses, account-recovery methods and settings you will need to recreate.
- Prepare a test period in which you use Linux for ordinary tasks while keeping the current system available for a known fallback.
- Run the file, meeting, printing, gaming and peripheral tests from your inventory.
- Record defects with the exact device, distribution release, application version and reproduction steps; search the vendor’s current support information before changing several variables at once.
- Only after the pass list is complete, decide whether to keep a fallback or remove the previous system.
Installation media requirements and backup procedures vary by distribution and release, so follow the current instructions for the distribution you select rather than treating a generic checklist as an official requirement.
Common surprises and how to handle them
“The app opens, but my work does not”
Return to the task inventory. Test macros, plug-ins, fonts, exports and collaboration, not just launch and sign-in. If one irreplaceable feature is missing, keep that task on the fallback system or choose a supported alternative.
Recommended Free Tools
“The browser version is almost enough”
Identify the exact offline, automation or file-preservation feature that is missing. If it is occasional, schedule that work on the fallback. If it is daily, treat the browser as a partial solution and do not label the application fully compatible.

“A game worked until an update”
Record the game version, Proton version, graphics driver and launcher. Check the title’s current compatibility information and try the supported configuration before changing the whole operating system. Keep another platform available for time-sensitive multiplayer play.
“The laptop works, but the dock or printer does not”
Test each component directly, then reconnect the dock and retest displays, audio, networking and USB devices. Check the manufacturer’s Linux support and the distribution’s device information. Certification of the computer does not automatically cover accessories.
Make the final decision
Switch fully when every essential workflow has a tested Linux path, your files survive the hand-off you require, the hardware behaves through normal use and you have a recovery plan. Choose a staged or alongside installation when one or two non-negotiable tasks still depend on Windows software, an unsupported peripheral or a title-specific gaming feature. Choose a browser or replacement path only after testing the exact files and collaboration steps that matter to you.
