Before moving to a cheaper Australian NBN plan, compare the ongoing cost and exit terms, the provider’s typical evening speed, what your address can actually receive, and whether your equipment and essential services will work. Check the plan’s Critical Information Summary (CIS) and Key Facts Sheet; a low headline price or maximum speed alone does not tell you whether switching is worthwhile.

1. Work out the full cost, not just the advertised monthly price

Compare your current service and the proposed plan over the same period. Use the price you would pay after any introductory offer ends, and include charges that apply to your circumstances. A cheaper first few months may not mean a lower ongoing bill.

  • Ongoing monthly price: Record the standard price and when it takes effect if the plan has a promotion.
  • One-off costs: Check for setup, delivery, activation or equipment charges. These vary by provider and offer, so confirm them directly rather than assuming they are included.
  • Leaving your current plan: Check whether you have a contract or an early exit fee. The CIS is one place to look for contract length and fees for leaving early.
  • Equipment costs: Add the cost of a required modem or router only if you actually need one; first check what you already own and whether it is compatible.

For a fair comparison, choose a period that includes any promotional expiry and any known contract commitment. Multiply each plan’s applicable monthly prices by the months they apply, then add relevant one-off or exit charges. The result is a comparison for your quoted plans, not a general estimate of how much an NBN customer can save.

Price context can help, but it cannot replace a current quote. In a simplified comparison of major retailers, the ACCC reported that prices for 100 Mbps and lower plans rose by $3–$7 per month between 2023–24 and 2024–25. For 2024–25, customer-weighted 25 Mbps and 50 Mbps services were priced $9.00 and $8.69 above the average available plan price, respectively. These are historical aggregate comparisons published in 2025, not current offers or a prediction of your bill.

2. Compare typical evening speed with the way your household uses the internet

Look for the provider’s typical evening speed rather than relying on a maximum or headline speed. The ACCC’s broadband-speed guidance describes the busy evening period as 7 pm to 11 pm, when many households are online. Its speed labels correspond to these expected download-speed levels:

ACCC evening-speed label Expected busy-period download speed
Basic Less than 15 Mbps
Standard At least 15 Mbps
Standard Plus At least 30 Mbps
Premium At least 60 Mbps

These labels describe expected busy-period performance, not a promise that every connection will achieve the same result. Actual performance depends on the service and circumstances at your address. Also check upload needs if anyone regularly sends large files, joins video calls, or backs up photos and work data; a download figure alone does not describe every part of a connection.

Choose around simultaneous use, not just the number of people in the home. ACCAN’s broad guidance says NBN 25 is generally suitable for one or two people, while NBN 50 may suit a household of three or four. Those are general indications, not guarantees: several people streaming, gaming, downloading or taking video calls at the same time can change what feels adequate. Consider the busiest normal evening in your home, not only occasional light use.

Make a short list of what happens at peak times: how many people stream video, whether multiple video calls run together, whether games or large downloads compete for bandwidth, and whether anyone works from home. Then compare that pattern with the plan’s published speed information. If your household’s main need is reliable video meetings or uploads, do not select solely by the lowest monthly cost or the plan’s advertised download tier.

3. Confirm what your specific address can receive

NBN technology and local technical conditions affect the maximum speed a service can attain. A plan’s advertised tier is not proof that your particular line or fixed wireless connection can deliver it. Before ordering, use the provider’s address check and ask what connection technology and any known speed limitation apply to the service at your premises.

The ACCC says technical limitations are common with copper wiring and fixed wireless. Providers should disclose known limitations during signup or promptly after they learn of them. If the address check or provider information suggests the line may not reach the plan speed, ask what happens next: can the service be changed to a suitable tier, is there a process to resolve the issue, and what are your options if the attainable speed is below what you expected?

That question matters because the order is for a service at an address, not an abstract speed tier. Keep the provider’s answer with your plan documents. If a speed issue arises, the ACCC states that “Providers are responsible for resolving issues with NBN services on behalf of their customers.” Raise the problem with your provider rather than assuming you must resolve an NBN network issue yourself.

4. Read the plan documents before you commit

Use both key documents to check different parts of the offer. The CIS helps you establish the commercial terms, including price, contract length and early exit fees. The Key Facts Sheet is useful for the service-performance picture: busy-period speed, likely uses, factors that can affect speed, and services that may be affected by a power failure.

  1. Open the CIS for the exact plan. Confirm the standard price, any promotional period, contract commitment and fees for leaving early.
  2. Read the Key Facts Sheet for the same offer. Check its typical busy-period speed, stated likely uses, factors affecting speed and power-failure information.
  3. Resolve gaps with the provider before ordering. Ask for written clarification on setup or modem charges, address-specific limitations, and what happens if the connection cannot deliver the expected speed.
  4. Save the documents and your quote. Keep the version and offer details you relied on so you can check the terms if the bill or service differs from what you understood.

Plan details can change. Confirm that the documents and prices you are reviewing apply to the offer available when you sign up; do not assume an older comparison still reflects current terms.

5. Check your router and other equipment before buying replacements

Ask the provider what equipment is compatible with the service and whether the plan requires equipment you do not have. Then check the model and capabilities of your existing router. The ACCC notes that older routers can constrain faster services, including routers that cannot support download speeds above 100 Mbps. That is a reason to verify your equipment against the speed you are buying, not a reason to replace every router when switching.

If your router is compatible, works reliably and can support the service you intend to use, a new device may be an unnecessary expense. If it is not compatible or limits the speed you have selected, compare the provider’s equipment requirements with the capabilities of your existing hardware before deciding what to purchase. Include any required equipment cost in the full-plan comparison, and verify whether the provider’s charge is one-off or recurring.

6. Check phone, alarm and power-failure dependencies

A broadband change can affect services beyond internet access. If you rely on a home-phone number, ask whether it can be retained and how the change is handled. If a medical or security alarm uses your communications service, contact the alarm provider to verify compatibility before switching; do not assume that a broadband provider can confirm how a particular alarm will work.

Review the Key Facts Sheet for services that may stop working during a power failure. Ask the provider how the proposed service handles your phone needs, and check whether any equipment or service arrangement is required for your use. Treat this as a continuity check, especially where a phone, alarm or other service is important in an emergency.

7. Use performance data as context, not as a promise

The ACCC’s performance dashboard reports results by provider and connection type, using measures that include speed, upload, latency, packet loss and outages. Its latest report summary says fixed-line customers averaged 99.4% of their plan download speed during peak evening hours. The ACCC released that summary on 17 June 2026. It is a market-wide average, not a forecast for a particular provider, plan or address.

The Measuring Broadband Australia program concluded in June 2026. Its published results remain useful historical context, but they should not be described as ongoing testing. Use available performance information to understand the kinds of measures that matter and how reported results are presented; combine it with the provider’s current plan information and address-specific answers rather than treating a national average as a personal guarantee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Make the switch decision with a side-by-side check

Put the current plan and proposed plan next to each other and compare the information that can change the outcome. A lower monthly fee is useful only if the service still meets your household’s needs and the switch does not introduce a cost or compatibility problem.

  • Whole-period cost: Compare ongoing prices, promotion expiry, setup or equipment charges and any applicable exit fee over the same period.
  • Performance: Compare typical evening download speeds and consider upload needs against simultaneous household activity.
  • Address suitability: Confirm the connection technology, known limitations and what the provider will do if attainable speed falls short.
  • Terms: Check the CIS for price, commitment and exit conditions, and the Key Facts Sheet for performance and power-failure details.
  • Continuity: Verify existing equipment, phone-number retention and alarm compatibility where these matter to you.

Proceed when the proposed plan’s terms are clear, its address-specific performance is suitable for your use, and the total cost is lower or otherwise worthwhile for you. If one of those checks is unresolved, ask the provider before placing the order rather than relying on an assumption made from the headline offer.
