Before you switch, verify coverage where you actually use your phone, calculate the cost of leaving and joining, and confirm that your exact handset will work on the new network. Then arrange any number transfer, prepare a data backup if you are changing phones, and test essential services after activation. You may not need to buy a new phone at all.
1. Will the new carrier work where you need it?
Start with the places that matter in your routine: home, work, school, regular routes, and destinations you visit often. Check each prospective carrier’s current coverage information for those specific locations. A broad coverage claim does not tell you whether service will be reliable in your building, neighborhood, or commute.
- Compare coverage at your real-use locations, not only across a country or region.
- Consider whether you need service in places you travel to regularly.
- Check the plan’s limits and conditions that matter to you, rather than comparing monthly prices alone.
Coverage information is provider- and location-specific, so there is no universal result for every address. Check current information with the carriers you are considering.

2. What will switching actually cost?
Compare the full cost of leaving your current provider and joining the next one. The advertised monthly rate may not reflect what you will owe or the conditions attached to an offer.

- Ask your current carrier whether you have a remaining device balance or an early termination fee. Verizon advises customers to check their current carrier’s terms for these amounts; what you owe depends on your account and contract. Verizon’s number-transfer preparation guidance.
- Review the new plan’s terms and any conditions attached to promotions.
- Include taxes and fees shown during checkout when comparing offers.
- Compare recurring charges and one-time costs separately so you can see both the ongoing bill and the cost of making the move.
There is no single exit fee or guaranteed saving that applies to everyone. Your current agreement and the destination offer determine the figures.
3. Will your current phone work with the new carrier?
Check the exact phone model with the destination carrier before you switch or buy a replacement. A familiar brand name—or an unlocked label by itself—does not guarantee that the handset supports the carrier’s network features or activation method.

- Find the phone’s exact model identifier in its settings or device documentation.
- Use the destination carrier’s compatibility information or contact the carrier to check that model.
- Confirm that the phone is unlocked if you intend to use it with a different provider. Unlocking rules vary by carrier and location.
- Verify whether activation uses a physical SIM, eSIM, or both, and confirm that your phone supports the method you plan to use.
- Check support for the network features you rely on, then confirm those features after activation.

If it does not, an unlocked smartphone that is compatible with the chosen carrier is one possible replacement category; a new phone is not required simply because you are changing brands.

4. Can you keep your number?
Number-transfer rules and steps depend on your location and providers. If keeping your number matters, follow the receiving carrier’s current instructions and check the relevant local regulator’s guidance. Do not assume that a process or timeline from another country applies to you.
For UK mobile customers
Ofcom’s UK Text to Switch process uses a PAC to transfer a number or a STAC when switching without keeping the number. Ofcom also says that, in most cases, a number can still be transferred within one month of cancellation. For other locations
Use your destination provider’s and local regulator’s current number-transfer guidance. The UK PAC/STAC procedure is not a worldwide rule.
5. What changes when you switch phone brands?
Changing the handset is separate from changing the carrier. Back up important information and follow the manufacturers’ current migration instructions; changing a SIM alone does not move your personal data or guarantee that every carrier feature will be preserved.

For iPhone, Apple documents several ways to activate an eSIM, so check the method supported by your carrier and device before starting: Apple Support: set up eSIM on iPhone. If moving to a Galaxy, Samsung notes that carrier branding, network configuration, features, and system apps may change when the phone changes carriers: Samsung Support: carrier changes on Galaxy devices.
6. What should you test after activation?
Once the new service is active, test the services you rely on before considering the switch complete. Exact behavior can depend on the phone and carrier.
- Place and receive a call.
- Send and receive text messages.
- Load a webpage using mobile data with Wi-Fi turned off.
- Check voicemail.
- Test any device or network features that are important to you.
If something does not work, contact the carrier or device maker with the exact phone model and describe the affected service. Recheck the SIM or eSIM setup and the carrier’s compatibility guidance rather than assuming that a successful activation confirms every feature.
