Before buying a Windows PC, check five things: whether the exact computer supports Windows 11, whether your essential apps and devices work with Windows, where your files and app data live, what licenses and accounts you will need, and what the complete change will cost. If you mean installing Windows on your current Mac rather than moving to a PC, first identify whether it has an Apple or Intel processor; the available routes differ substantially.

A checklist is more reliable than assuming that a familiar app, accessory, or cloud service will behave the same way on both platforms. Microsoft says that “Windows 11 runs best on a PC designed for Windows.” Treat that as a reason to verify the specific computer and workflow you plan to use—not as a substitute for checking your own requirements.

1. Check that the exact PC supports Windows 11

Before you choose a computer, confirm its exact model and configuration against Microsoft’s current Windows 11 requirements. Do not rely only on a store listing that says “Windows compatible,” or on a minimum specification copied from an older page. A computer’s processor, firmware, security features, graphics, and configuration all matter to eligibility.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 Compatibility Cookbook lists a compatible 64-bit processor, at least 4 GB of RAM, at least 64 GB of storage, TPM 2.0, and graphics compatible with DirectX 12 and WDDM 2.0 among the requirements. The Cookbook was last updated on August 23, 2022, so use those figures as a checklist, not as the final authority for a purchase in 2026. Check Microsoft’s current specifications and use Microsoft’s PC Health Check tool where applicable to assess a particular device.

What to verify Why it matters Evidence or action
Compatible 64-bit processor Windows 11 requires a supported processor; “64-bit” alone does not establish eligibility. Check the exact processor and device configuration against Microsoft’s current compatibility guidance.
RAM 4 GB is a listed minimum, not a workload recommendation. Check the requirements of your actual apps and the number of tasks you expect to run together.
Storage 64 GB is a listed minimum, but local files, media, apps, and updates also need room. Estimate the data and software you intend to keep on the PC, then choose capacity accordingly.
TPM 2.0 and graphics These are among the listed Windows 11 requirements. Verify the exact PC rather than assuming that every configuration of a model qualifies.
Ports and display support Your Mac setup may depend on a dock, external monitors, storage, or other connected devices. Compare the PC’s ports and display capabilities with the devices and configuration you actually use.

Minimum eligibility and a good fit are different decisions. If your work involves large files, demanding creative applications, games, multiple displays, or several apps open at once, use the requirements published by those app vendors and the capacity your files require. The available requirements do not establish one universally suitable amount of RAM or storage for every former Mac user.

Compare candidates against your own workload

For each PC you are considering, write down the exact model and configuration, then compare it with your essentials: required apps, file storage, ports, display setup, portability, and any specialized hardware. Confirm compatibility before purchase, particularly if a model has multiple processor, memory, or storage configurations. No individual Windows computer or benchmark has been established here as the best choice.

2. Audit apps, peripherals, and workflows

Make a list of everything you use on the Mac, including things you may not think of as “apps.” Compatibility depends on the exact product, version, driver, and workflow—not merely on whether a company makes software for both platforms. Confirm support with the relevant developer or device manufacturer before you depend on a replacement.

Build an application inventory

Include everyday tools and less frequent but important dependencies. A forgotten plug-in or utility can block a work task just as effectively as a missing primary application.

  • Essential work and personal applications, including the exact edition or version you use.
  • Specialist, older, or organization-managed software, and any plug-ins or add-ons those tools rely on.
  • Games, saved content, and any launchers or supporting tools you need.
  • Printer, scanner, audio, security, or VPN utilities that are installed on the Mac.
  • Tasks connected to Apple services, such as managing a library, syncing data, or sharing files.

For each item, check whether a Windows version exists, whether it supports Windows 11, whether your current account or license covers that version, and whether the features you actually use are available. If an app is important to your job, confirm the requirement with your employer or software administrator as well as the developer. A product name that appears on both platforms does not prove that every plug-in, feature, or saved project will carry over.

Check devices by exact model

List the model numbers of printers, scanners, docks, displays, audio interfaces, input devices, and any specialized equipment. Look for current Windows drivers, connection requirements, and supported operating-system versions for each. Check the ports on the PC and any adapters or dock needed to connect the device. A device that physically plugs in may still lack a Windows driver or the utility required to configure it.

For a critical device, verify its specific model and workflow rather than relying on a broad statement that the brand supports Windows. This is particularly useful for equipment that is difficult to replace or used for a recurring business process. Microsoft’s compatibility guidance recommends validating applications for Windows 11, but it cannot establish compatibility for your personal list of software and hardware.

Check office software and entitlements

Microsoft’s current system-requirements page lists Windows 11 as the operating-system requirement for Office 2024 for Windows. Its page also describes separate requirements for Office for Mac, including support for the three most recent macOS versions, and account, internet activation, and cloud file-management requirements. Check the precise Office edition and license entitlement you own. Do not assume that a license used on the Mac automatically entitles you to install the Windows edition.

Before switching, identify who owns or assigns each license, how activation works, and whether you can sign in to the account that holds it. If your employer or school manages the software, ask the administrator about the Windows installation and account before changing devices.

3. Map your files and plan a verified transfer

A new computer is not a complete migration simply because some familiar documents appear on it. First find the files you need, then distinguish between files already synchronized to a cloud service and files that exist only on the Mac or an external drive. Also identify app-specific libraries and data that may not be stored in ordinary folders.

Inventory where data lives

  • Review the Mac’s internal drive, including working folders and personal documents.
  • Check external drives and other removable storage.
  • Identify cloud folders and verify which items have actually synchronized.
  • Look for app-specific libraries, such as media or project collections, and determine how their owners say to move or export them.
  • Separate files you need on the new PC from archives you can retain elsewhere.

Do not treat a cloud folder as proof that every file is online. A file may be local-only, an upload may not have completed, or an application’s library may require its own migration process. The OneDrive instructions described below address files, photos, and videos; they do not promise to migrate every app, setting, password store, or account state.

Use OneDrive only if it fits your storage and workflow

Microsoft documents a OneDrive route for moving files, photos, and videos to a new Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC. The important part is verifying the transfer before retiring the old computer:

Rank #3
  1. On the Mac, check the OneDrive folder and identify the files you expect to transfer.
  2. Sign in to OneDrive on the web and confirm that the expected files appear there.
  3. Upload items that are missing, and wait for the uploads to complete before moving on.
  4. On the new PC, sign in to the same account and check that the expected content is available.
  5. Open a sample of important files and confirm that they are usable in the intended Windows apps.

Microsoft says a personal Microsoft account includes 5 GB of free OneDrive storage. That allowance may not cover a large photo, video, or work collection; check current storage availability and plan allowances before choosing cloud transfer. OneDrive is an option, not a requirement. If cloud transfer does not suit your data volume or needs, an external drive can be a manual transfer medium, but verify the files after copying them and check that the drive works with both computers.

Keep a recovery copy until the new setup is proven

Keep the original Mac and a second copy of important data until you have checked the new PC. Open representative documents, photos, and project files; confirm that essential folders are present; and test the apps or devices that use them. For work data, follow your organization’s backup and handling rules. This gives you a way back if a file is missing or a Windows app cannot use it as expected.

4. Review accounts, subscriptions, and the full cost

Switching operating systems can change more than the purchase price of the computer. List the accounts and recurring services tied to your current setup, then verify how each works on Windows and whether you need a replacement license, storage plan, adapter, or peripheral. Include one-time setup needs and ongoing charges in the same budget.

Check sign-ins and service support

Make sure you can access the Microsoft account or work/school account you will use on the PC, along with the Apple and third-party accounts that hold your content or subscriptions. Check whether each service has a Windows app or usable Windows access, whether it supports the features you rely on, and whether the subscription covers use on the new platform. An account existing on both devices does not by itself ensure that all data or features will be available in the same way.

Microsoft says an Office license assignment requires a Microsoft or organizational account. It also says Office cloud file-management features require OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint. If those features are part of your workflow, confirm that you can sign in to the right account and have the appropriate service and storage available.

Budget after the inventory

Build the cost estimate from items you have actually identified: the computer, required software, adapters, storage, or replacement peripherals. Add recurring subscription or storage costs where applicable. Do not buy accessories or a paid storage plan simply because they are common in a PC setup; first check the ports, devices, licenses, and data volume you already have. There are no current computer-model prices or comparative cost totals established here, so calculate them for the candidates and services you are considering.

5. Decide whether you are moving to a PC or running Windows on a Mac

These are different plans. Buying a Windows PC gives you a computer designed to run Windows. Running Windows within or alongside macOS keeps the Mac as the host device and adds separate hardware, licensing, and compatibility considerations. The processor in your Mac determines which options are relevant.

If your Mac has an Apple M-series processor

For M1, M2, and M3 Macs, Microsoft documents running ARM versions of Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise in a virtual environment with specified versions of Parallels Desktop. Microsoft also documents streaming a Windows 11 Cloud PC through Windows 365. These are not the same as installing Windows directly as the Mac’s startup operating system.

Microsoft cautions that Windows on ARM has limitations that can affect some apps and hardware, including software that uses DirectX 12; some nested virtualization features are unsupported. Microsoft also says a separate Windows 11 Pro license is needed if you do not already have one. Before selecting a virtualization or cloud route, verify the currently authorized product versions, license terms, and any organizational eligibility that applies. Test your must-have apps and devices against the specific route rather than assuming that Windows software will behave identically in a virtual environment.

If your Mac has an Intel processor

Apple’s Boot Camp guide applies to listed Intel-based Mac models and describes a Windows 10 installation workflow: use Boot Camp Assistant, allocate storage, install Windows support software and drivers, then choose an operating system at startup. The guide was published December 11, 2025, but it is specifically a Windows 10 guide. It is not a general Windows 11 installation guide and does not apply to Apple silicon Macs.

That Boot Camp guide lists at least 64 GB of free storage and says 128 GB or more provides the best experience for its Windows 10 installation workflow. Those figures describe that guide’s context; they are not a general recommendation for a new Windows PC. Check the exact Mac model and current Windows lifecycle before relying on this route. Do not assume that being able to install Windows 10 makes an older Mac a suitable or supported way to run the Windows version you need.

6. Use a go/no-go checklist before you commit

Before ordering a PC, you should be able to answer these questions with specifics rather than assumptions:

  • Device: Have you verified Windows 11 eligibility for the exact model and configuration?
  • Workload: Does the configuration meet the requirements of your essential apps and the storage needs of your files?
  • Software: Have you checked Windows support, versions, plug-ins, license rights, and account access for every critical app?
  • Hardware: Have you checked current drivers, ports, and connection requirements for each device you need to keep using?
  • Data: Do you know which files are local, which are synchronized, and how any app-specific library will move?
  • Transfer: Have you chosen a transfer method and confirmed that the data is available on the new PC before relying on it?
  • Services and cost: Have you checked Windows support for subscriptions and services, and added necessary licenses, storage, adapters, or replacements to the budget?
  • Route: If you intend to keep the Mac, have you identified its processor and checked the requirements and limitations of the relevant Windows route?

Use the answers to compare candidate computers on verified eligibility, essential app and peripheral support, capacity for your workload, ports and display needs, portability, and total setup cost. The official guidance cited here does not rank PC models, provide comparative benchmark results, or establish migration success rates, typical transfer times, or average switching costs. Your own inventory is therefore the basis for a defensible decision.
