Before you leave a Pixel, identify the exact destination phone, secure your accounts, make a fresh backup, and plan for mobile-service activation. A transfer is selective: what arrives depends on whether the new phone is Android or iPhone, the models and software involved, the transfer method, and your carrier. Keep the Pixel powered on and untouched until you have checked your data and tested calls, texts, and mobile data on the replacement.

Use the checklist below to avoid the most expensive mistakes: missing authentication codes, an unactivated eSIM, apps without their local data, or a factory reset performed before you know what actually transferred.

1. Identify the destination before you start

“Android” is not one universal migration process. A Pixel-to-Pixel move can expose different options from a Pixel-to-another-manufacturer move, and an Android-to-iPhone transfer uses Apple’s setup flow. Write down the destination model, operating system version, storage capacity, and whether it accepts a physical SIM, an eSIM, or both. Then open that manufacturer’s current transfer instructions before turning on the new phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that instructions for moving an iPhone to Android apply in reverse. For example, guidance about turning off iMessage is for an iPhone owner leaving Apple, not for someone moving from a Pixel to an iPhone.

Check capacity and readiness

  • Compare the amount of photos, videos, downloads, and app data on the Pixel with free space on the new phone. Apple specifically says the content being moved must fit on the iPhone.
  • Charge both devices. Keep them close together and on a stable Wi-Fi network for wireless migration.
  • If you plan to use a cable, verify that both phones support the documented wired route and that the cable carries data, not only power.
  • Have the Google Account password available. A Google Account is needed to download apps, use some features, and retrieve synced information during or after setup.

2. Make an inventory of what cannot be replaced

A short inventory turns a vague “did everything copy?” worry into a testable list. Mark each item as cloud-synced, backed up, or stored only on the Pixel.

  • Contacts, calendar events, and call history
  • Photos, videos, screenshots, recordings, downloads, and other files
  • SMS, RCS, group conversations, and attachments
  • Notes, alarms, custom wallpapers, and home-screen arrangements
  • WhatsApp or other chat histories, including media and local backups
  • Passwords, passkeys, authenticator accounts, recovery codes, and security keys
  • Banking approvals, work profiles, travel passes, health records, and two-factor applications
  • Paid apps, subscriptions, in-app purchases, and app-local projects or game saves
  • Bluetooth accessories, watches, vehicles, hearing devices, and other connected equipment

Open the most important apps on the Pixel and read their own export, backup, or device-change instructions. General phone migration cannot guarantee that an app’s private database, downloads, or license will move.

3. Back up the Pixel and verify account access

Run a fresh device backup and check its date or completion status rather than assuming automatic backup happened recently. Confirm that photos and videos have finished syncing, files exist in the cloud service you use, and contacts and calendars appear when viewed from another device or the provider’s website.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sign in to the Google Account and any other account that will be needed to restore information. If you use a password manager, verify its master-password or recovery method before beginning. Save one-time recovery codes somewhere you can reach without the Pixel. Keep the old phone available even after the transfer appears complete; it may be the only device still approved for a sign-in challenge.

4. What usually transfers from Pixel to another Android phone

Google’s Pixel transfer documentation lists a broad set of categories for setting up a new Pixel from Android, but the exact result depends on the destination and method. Pixel-to-Pixel flows can differ from transfers involving another manufacturer. Google cautions: “Some data stored in apps that are specific to devices from other manufacturers may not transfer.”

Category What Google documents in supported Android-to-Pixel flows Qualification to check
Accounts and connectivity Google Account, Wi-Fi login details, and (in supported cases) eSIM eSIM support depends on the phone, carrier, software, and location.
Personal data Contacts, calendar events, photos and videos, files and folders, and audio files Cloud-synced items may restore separately from items stored only on the device.
Messages and history Text messages with attachments, call history, and WhatsApp chat history Chat apps can require their own backup or verification step.
Apps and credentials Apps, passwords, and passkeys in documented flows Apps generally transfer when obtained through Google Play; password/passkey coverage varies by method and app.
Settings and personalization Device settings and custom-photo wallpaper Notes and alarms have app-related qualifications. Recordings and home-screen layout are marked as not transferring from another Android device to Pixel, although Pixel-to-Pixel support is different.

Pixel 8 and later can pair with an old Android device for wireless or cable transfer. Pixel 9 and later can add data after initial setup. Those are instructions for transfers to Pixel, not a promise that every other Android manufacturer exposes the same menus or post-setup option. Follow the destination phone’s own guide when it differs.

5. What moves from Pixel to iPhone

Apple’s Move to iOS process is designed to run while a new iPhone is being set up. Apple lists contacts; message history and SMS; camera photos and videos; photo albums; files and folders; accessibility and display settings; web bookmarks; mail accounts; WhatsApp messages and media; Voice Memos; call history; and calendars. Some free apps may be matched when an equivalent exists in both stores and the app supports the feature. A matched app may still need to be downloaded from the App Store and signed in again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Content Expected treatment in Move to iOS
Contacts, calendars, mail accounts, bookmarks Included in Apple’s listed categories; confirm that each account is enabled after setup.
Messages and call history SMS and message history, plus call history, are listed for transfer. Check conversations and attachments that matter to you.
Photos, videos, albums, files, and folders Listed for transfer if the content fits the iPhone’s available storage.
WhatsApp Messages and media are listed; complete any WhatsApp verification or restore prompt.
Music, books, and PDFs Apple says these require manual transfer rather than automatic migration.
Apps Some free apps may be matched. Download them from the App Store and check purchases, subscriptions, and local data separately.

Apple documents a USB-C cable as an alternative to wireless transfer and describes it as a direct, faster route when the devices support it. A cable can improve the connection, but it does not turn unsupported apps, books, or protected data into transferable content.

6. Secure passwords, passkeys, and authentication first

Do not treat a successful transfer animation as proof that you can sign in everywhere. Open each security-sensitive service’s device-change instructions before wiping the Pixel.

Authenticator apps and two-factor codes

Export or re-enroll authenticator accounts using the app’s supported method. Test a code on a non-critical sign-in, and retain recovery codes or an alternate factor until the new phone works. Banking apps, corporate access, password managers, and travel services may require a separate approval on the old device.

Passkeys and saved passwords

Documented password and passkey coverage varies by transfer method. Some credentials may be restored through an account sync, while others remain tied to a particular app or security provider. Check that your password manager opens, that its vault is current, and that at least one recovery route does not depend on the Pixel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Paid apps and subscriptions

List purchases and subscriptions separately. Store accounts can differ between Android and iPhone, and an app developer may use a different billing or entitlement system on each platform. Confirm important purchases with the provider and make sure recurring subscriptions are attached to the account you intend to keep.

7. Plan the SIM and eSIM change with your carrier

Phone-number migration is a separate task from copying data. Ask the carrier whether the exact Pixel line and destination model support direct eSIM transfer, a carrier app, a QR code, or a physical-SIM swap. Android notes that eSIM availability depends on the phone brand and carrier. Apple says direct Android-to-iPhone eSIM transfer is supported only by some carriers and selected compatible devices and software; otherwise the carrier can activate the line or provide a QR code. Apple’s cited support guidance was published September 18, 2026, so compatibility can change.

Do not remove the old SIM or erase the Pixel while activation is unresolved. After the replacement is activated, test all of the following from the new phone:

  • An outgoing call and an incoming call
  • An individual SMS and a group message
  • Mobile data with Wi-Fi turned off
  • Voicemail and any carrier account or visual-voicemail app

If a physical SIM is reused, check the size and tray orientation. If an eSIM is installed by QR code, keep the code or carrier instructions until the line is working.

8. Use this safe handoff order

  1. Back up. Run the Pixel backup, verify its date or status, and confirm photo, file, contact, and calendar sync.
  2. Prepare access. Record recovery codes, complete authenticator or passkey transfer steps, and verify password-manager access.
  3. Set up the destination. Follow the current Android or Move to iOS guide. Keep both phones powered, nearby, and undisturbed as instructed.
  4. Activate service. Complete the carrier’s SIM or eSIM procedure, then make calls and test SMS, group messaging, voicemail, and mobile data.
  5. Audit the arrival. Check the categories in the inventory, open essential apps, restore missing downloads or media, and confirm purchases and subscriptions.
  6. Keep the Pixel intact. Use it to retrieve anything missing and to approve sign-ins until the new phone passes the audit.
  7. Retire it securely. Remove or deactivate the SIM or eSIM as appropriate, sign out where required, and factory-reset the Pixel before resale, trade-in, donation, or recycling. Android’s official guidance specifically calls for clearing data and resetting a device before it changes hands.

9. Run a final audit before erasing the Pixel

Use this as a practical acceptance test, not a quick glance at the new home screen:

  • Open several recent photos, videos, albums, and downloaded files.
  • Search contacts and calendars for entries you know are important.
  • Read recent SMS or RCS conversations and confirm attachments or group threads.
  • Review WhatsApp or other critical chat history and media.
  • Launch banking, work, travel, password-manager, and authenticator apps.
  • Confirm passkeys, two-factor codes, recovery routes, and push approvals.
  • Pair essential accessories and check notifications, Bluetooth audio, and vehicle connectivity.
  • Make and receive calls, send messages, and load a webpage over cellular data.
  • Check storage space so a later photo or app restore will not fail silently.

10. Choose the replacement by the things that affect your routine

Because no particular destination model is specified, compare the traits that determine whether the switch will feel successful:

Decision area Questions to answer before buying or accepting the phone
Size and ergonomics Is the weight, screen size, grip, and one-handed reach suitable for daily use?
Screen and accessibility Does it provide the brightness, text scaling, color controls, hearing support, and navigation options you rely on?
Camera and storage Will the camera meet your needs, and is there enough local space for your existing library and future media?
Battery and charging Does it support your chargers, wireless charging accessories, and expected travel routine?
Software and apps Are essential apps available on the destination platform, and how long will the manufacturer provide updates?
Connected devices Will watches, vehicles, hearing devices, controllers, and smart-home equipment pair and retain their needed features?
Migration path Does the manufacturer document cable or wireless transfer, post-setup restoration, and the account types you use?

These are comparison criteria, not a model ranking. If a specification or support period matters to your decision, verify it on the destination manufacturer’s current product page before committing.

11. Troubleshoot by symptom

The transfer stopped or never started

Reconnect both phones to power, confirm Wi-Fi or the data cable, free space on the destination, and restart the setup flow if the manufacturer permits it. Avoid repeatedly deleting data from the Pixel while troubleshooting.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Photos or files are missing

Determine whether they were cloud-synced or stored locally in Downloads, a recording folder, or an app’s private directory. Copy local files manually or restore them from the service that owns them.

An app installed but has no history

Sign in with the original account and look for the app’s restore or import command. App installation is not the same as app-data migration; contact the developer when its local format is proprietary.

Calls work but texts or data do not

Recheck carrier activation, the selected mobile-data SIM, APN or carrier settings, and default messaging settings. Test with Wi-Fi disabled and ask the carrier to reprovision the line if necessary.

You are locked out of an account

Use the saved recovery code or alternate factor, then add the new phone as an approved authenticator. Keep the Pixel available until every critical account accepts the replacement.

12. The one accessory that may help

A USB-C-to-USB-C data cable is useful when both phones support a wired transfer and you want a direct connection. Check the ports and the destination guide before buying; not every switch needs a cable, and a cable does not bypass storage limits, app restrictions, or carrier activation.
