Before buying a Windows laptop, check that it can handle your essential apps, files, Apple services, and peripherals. Plan data transfer separately from app installation, confirm the new PC runs a supported Windows release, and keep your Mac until you have verified the new setup.
1. Check your apps and everyday workflows
Make an inventory of the apps and workflows you rely on, especially for work or creative projects. A file transfer does not move your Mac applications to Windows: Microsoft says its described PC-to-PC transfer feature excludes apps, so you will need to reinstall software and confirm that each publisher offers a Windows version. Microsoft’s transfer guidance also says the described feature is no longer available and directs readers to Windows Backup and Restore; check what the specific Windows version and setup currently offer.
Build an app and workflow list
- List apps you use regularly and specialist software you need for work, school, or a hobby.
- Check each publisher’s current Windows version, system requirements, subscription or license portability, plug-ins, fonts, and supported file formats.
- Note workflows that depend on Apple-only apps or features, or on a device driver or specialist accessory.
- Identify browser extensions and app-specific project libraries that may need to be installed or exported separately.
Use each app publisher’s own compatibility information and download page. The fact that Windows exists for a particular type of app does not establish compatibility for your exact version, plug-ins, or files.

2. Identify what needs to move—and what does not transfer
Treat moving your data and setting up your software as separate tasks. Microsoft’s documentation for its described PC-to-PC transfer excludes applications, saved sign-in credentials, OneDrive files, and BitLocker-encrypted drives. Do not treat a transfer or restore feature as a complete Mac backup.

Make a file and account inventory
- Check Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music, Movies, and project folders, plus any custom folders you use.
- Look for local-only files, external drives, photo or video libraries, mail archives, and application-specific libraries.
- Confirm which cloud files are actually online and which are only visible on the Mac as placeholders or cached copies.
- Make sure you can access your email, password manager, multi-factor authentication, software licenses, and work or school accounts before changing or erasing the Mac.
Windows restore options depend on the feature, Windows version, account, and region. Microsoft’s transfer documentation describes a PC-to-PC feature that is no longer available. Its Windows Backup and Restore guidance covers supported Windows 11 restore setups, requires the same Microsoft account for the documented restore path, and notes that apps may need to be reinstalled. Check the current instructions for your setup rather than assuming one transfer method will cover everything.
3. Choose a file-transfer method
Choose based on how much data you have, whether files are already synced, and how reliable your internet connection is. Whatever route you use, open the destination folders and check representative files after copying.

4. Check which Apple services you still need
List how you use your Mac with your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and other Apple devices. Consider iCloud Drive, Photos, Messages, AirDrop, AirPods, and Apple-specific apps individually; support for one Apple service does not prove that all the others work the same way on Windows.

5. Match the laptop to your actual work
Evaluate specific candidate laptops rather than treating Windows machines as interchangeable. Compare the features you will notice and use every day, and check that your accessories work with the exact model.
- Display: screen size, resolution, and whether it suits your work and workspace.
- Keyboard and trackpad: layout, feel, and comfort for your typical typing and navigation.
- Ports and accessories: available connections for displays, docks, storage, chargers, audio devices, and other peripherals. Check whether adapters are needed.
- Memory and storage: capacity against your apps, files, and expected workload.
- Mobility: dimensions, weight, and battery expectations for how and where you use the laptop.
- Support and purchase terms: warranty and return terms, and whether the installed Windows release is supported.
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; after that date, free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended. Verify that a new laptop is running a supported Windows release using Microsoft’s Windows 10 lifecycle information.

6. Verify the new setup before retiring your Mac
Keep the Mac available until the new laptop is working with your important data, accounts, apps, and accessories. A practical final check is to:
- Open representative documents, photos, and project files on the Windows laptop.
- Confirm that cloud files are present and synchronization has finished.
- Install critical apps from their publishers, launch them, and check any essential plug-ins or licenses.
- Sign in to important accounts and verify that you can complete multi-factor authentication.
- Connect and test the displays, storage, docks, audio devices, and other peripherals you rely on.
- Review key folders for missing files before wiping, trading in, or otherwise giving up the Mac.
Microsoft’s Mac-to-Windows transfer guidance likewise recommends checking files in their destination and keeping the previous computer until the transfer has been verified.
