Before adding ports or upgrading links, prove which traffic domain is constrained and show that the network—not the GPUs, storage, software, or host I/O path—is limiting the target workload. Map GPU scale-out, in-rack scale-up, storage, tenant access, and management traffic separately; trace each path through the fabric; calculate aggregate capacity and oversubscription; then validate the design with multi-node jobs at the intended cluster size.

A higher advertised port rate does not guarantee faster training or inference. The useful decision is the bandwidth, topology, congestion behavior, and operational model that deliver better end-to-end job results.

Start by identifying the traffic domain that is actually constrained

AI clusters carry several fundamentally different classes of traffic. Treating them as one network can make an expensive upgrade miss the bottleneck or introduce contention in a path that was previously reliable. NVIDIA architecture guidance separates east-west GPU communication, north-south or tenant connectivity, storage, and management services. Its DSX architecture also distinguishes an in-rack NVLink scale-up domain from the inter-node cluster fabric.

Traffic domain What moves across it Questions before sizing
GPU scale-out (east-west) Collectives, parameter exchange, all-reduce and all-to-all traffic between nodes Which jobs use it, how many nodes communicate concurrently, and which leaf, spine and NIC paths carry the flows?
In-rack scale-up GPU-to-GPU transfers inside a server or GPU domain, often through a proprietary accelerator interconnect Is the symptom inside the server rather than in the Ethernet or InfiniBand fabric? Are the accelerator links and topology healthy?
Storage Dataset reads, writes, checkpointing and restart traffic Do ingestion or checkpoint bursts overlap with collectives? Is the storage system, host path or fabric port saturated?
Tenant or customer access North-south application, inference and user traffic Are front-end links and services isolated from the GPU backend, or do they share switches and uplinks?
Management and support Provisioning, monitoring, orchestration, firmware and secure administrative access Can operators still reach every device and collect telemetry during a data-plane incident?

Physical separation is not mandatory in every deployment. NVIDIA’s reference designs describe single- or dual-plane choices based on scale, workload, operating model and budget. Document whether domains are physically separate, logically segmented or sharing the same links, because that determines where contention can occur.

Find the first saturated component

For the observed symptom, follow the path from the GPU process to its peer or service. Check the GPU, host CPU, PCIe bus, NIC, switch port, uplink, spine path, storage target and software collective layer. A job that reports low GPU utilization can be waiting on a congested link, but it can also be blocked by CPU staging, memory pressure, a slow storage target or scheduler behavior.

Google Cloud’s GPU networking documentation describes GPUDirect RDMA as allowing a network interface to access GPU memory over PCIe without routing data through host CPU and system memory. That can reduce a copy path, but it does not remove PCIe limits, NIC queueing, switch congestion, transport effects or application-level synchronization. Verify the complete path rather than treating RDMA as a guarantee of line-rate performance.

Trace capacity through the complete topology

Size the path from every GPU NIC through leaf switches and spines to the destination, not just the server-facing port. Record port speed, port count, uplink count, oversubscription at every tier, path diversity and the number of simultaneous communicating nodes. A nominal 400 Gb/s NIC can still be constrained by a smaller leaf uplink, an oversubscribed spine, a mixed-speed peer or a storage endpoint.

Build a link inventory

  1. For each node, record the number of NICs, their negotiated speed, PCIe generation and lane width, and the switch port to which each NIC connects.
  2. For every leaf, list downlink capacity, uplink capacity, uplink count and the number of active GPU nodes. Calculate the ratio of downlink to uplink bandwidth rather than assuming a non-blocking design.
  3. Repeat the calculation from leaf to spine and across any super-spine or inter-cluster boundary. Include links used by storage, tenant and management traffic when those domains share hardware.
  4. Check that optics, cables, transceivers and switch ports operate at the intended speed. A single lower-speed edge can become a hotspot when traffic hashes onto it.
  5. Map equal-cost paths and failure paths. A design that is balanced during normal operation may become oversubscribed after a link or switch failure.

Cisco’s AI/ML networking paper identifies speed or bandwidth mismatch and inadequate capacity as causes of congestion and describes scaling a non-blocking leaf-spine design. Juniper’s validated GPU design uses a three-stage IP Clos backend with RoCEv2 and treats available leaf-to-spine bandwidth as a variable when testing oversubscription. Those examples show what to measure; they are not universal sizing prescriptions.

Understand bisection bandwidth and oversubscription

Full bisection, often described as a 1:1 downlink-to-uplink objective, gives every half of a fabric enough aggregate capacity to communicate with the other half at line rate under an idealized traffic pattern. It also costs more ports, optics, power and rack space. Less-than-1:1 designs can be valid when measured workloads have lower concurrency or when storage and front-end traffic use separate capacity.

An older NVIDIA DGX example illustrates 1:1 leaf-to-core uplink bandwidth as full bisection for that platform. Treat it as context, not as a current requirement for every GPU generation. Set an explicit oversubscription target, state which workloads justify it, and test the design at the expected node count and concurrency.

Decide whether the interconnect should be Ethernet/RoCEv2 or InfiniBand

The reviewed architecture material identifies both Ethernet (including RoCEv2) and InfiniBand as viable GPU cluster interconnects. There is no neutral evidence here for a universal winner. Select the fabric that fits the workload, existing operations, support model and validated platform design.

Decision axis Ethernet with RoCEv2 InfiniBand
Integration Can align with an organization’s Ethernet switching, routing and observability practices; exact interoperability depends on the selected NICs and switches. Provides a purpose-built cluster fabric; confirm compatibility with the chosen GPU servers, adapters and management stack.
Congestion and loss Requires a carefully engineered loss-management and congestion-control configuration. Juniper’s design evaluates loss, throughput, latency and interference. Still requires fabric monitoring, queue and path management, and validation under the application’s communication pattern.
Skills and tooling May reduce the number of unfamiliar network tools for teams already operating large Ethernet fabrics, but RoCE-specific telemetry and tuning remain necessary. Requires staff who can operate and troubleshoot the InfiniBand fabric and its software ecosystem.
Interoperability and migration Evaluate vendor support matrices, transceiver qualification and routing or switching features before mixing generations. Evaluate adapter, switch, firmware and collective-library support as one tested stack.
Measured outcome Use collective performance, retransmissions or drops where exposed, latency, GPU idle time and job throughput under target load. Use the same workload measures; do not substitute a fabric benchmark for application results.

“The TAN and SMN are always Ethernet; the CIN can be configured as either Ethernet or InfiniBand, and NVLink is a proprietary NVIDIA standard.” — NVIDIA DSX Data Center Architecture documentation

This statement describes NVIDIA’s DSX naming and architecture. It does not mean every vendor’s cluster uses those planes or that one fabric is mandatory.

Establish a workload baseline before buying capacity

Run representative training and inference jobs at the current node count, then repeat at the planned expansion size if possible. Record the network and application metrics in the same time window so a link event can be correlated with a job slowdown.

Metrics to capture

  • Workload: samples or tokens per second, step time, job completion time, collective-operation duration and tail latency for inference.
  • GPU behavior: average and per-rank utilization, idle periods, memory use and synchronization waits.
  • Network: per-port throughput, peak and sustained utilization, queue occupancy, congestion marks, drops, retransmissions or retries exposed by the transport, and negotiated link speed.
  • Fabric health: hot links, unequal path use, failed-over paths, errors, optic alarms and switch buffer pressure.
  • Storage: read and write throughput, checkpoint duration, queue depth and storage-side latency while collectives run.
  • Operations: alert delivery, telemetry completeness, recovery time after a link or switch failure, and whether management access remains available.

Cisco discusses congestion from edge-link over-utilization and mixed GPU NIC port speeds. Juniper notes that packet loss can affect job completion time. Use those failure modes to shape your dashboards, but define thresholds from your own service objectives and telemetry capabilities.

Test the traffic patterns that matter

  1. Run the largest expected all-reduce or all-to-all training job, not only a point-to-point bandwidth test.
  2. Run inference with the expected request concurrency and measure p95 or p99 latency while background storage and management traffic are active.
  3. Start a dataset ingest or checkpoint during a collective-heavy job to expose shared-path contention.
  4. Repeat with one link, NIC or switch path unavailable to verify that failover does not create an unacceptable oversubscription spike.
  5. Compare results at the current and proposed link speeds. A proportional increase in nominal bandwidth is not evidence of proportional job speedup.

If GPU utilization rises and collective time falls after an isolated capacity change, the network was likely part of the bottleneck. If results do not move, investigate compute, memory, storage, software collectives, scheduling and host I/O before ordering more ports.

Account for platform limits and expansion details

Use vendor specifications as boundaries, not as a complete design. NVIDIA’s current HGX AI Factory reference-architecture components page lists up to 400 Gb/s BlueField-3 SuperNIC connectivity in its described component and platform context. That figure does not apply automatically to every GPU node, NIC configuration or end-to-end path.

Cisco’s paper, updated October 23, 2025, describes 64-port 400GbE switches as an example of expanding its design into a larger cluster. This is a product and design example, not a general requirement. Confirm the actual port breakout, forwarding capacity, buffer behavior, routing scale and software license for the switch generation you intend to deploy.

Check physical compatibility

  • Match the transceiver or cable form factor to the switch and NIC port, including breakout requirements.
  • Verify fiber type, reach, connector, thermal limits and vendor qualification.
  • Check that the host PCIe slot can sustain the adapter’s intended rate and that firmware enables the required features.
  • Reserve spare optics, cables, NICs and switch ports for failures and the next expansion step.
  • Validate that a new speed can interoperate with existing links without creating a hidden mixed-speed bottleneck.

A search phrase such as 400GbE QSFP-DD transceiver identifies a category of link accessory, not a guaranteed solution. A transceiver or cable cannot compensate for insufficient aggregate fabric capacity, an under-sized uplink or a saturated endpoint.

Use a staged upgrade plan

  1. Document the baseline: capture topology diagrams, negotiated speeds, traffic-domain ownership, current oversubscription and workload metrics.
  2. Isolate the limiting path: use telemetry and controlled tests to distinguish GPU, host, NIC, leaf, spine, storage and software constraints.
  3. Model the target: add planned nodes and concurrent jobs to the capacity calculation, including failure scenarios and non-GPU traffic.
  4. Pilot one failure domain: upgrade a rack, pod or leaf pair and run the same workload suite before changing the entire cluster.
  5. Validate operations: test configuration automation, monitoring, firmware consistency, rollback and secure management access.
  6. Expand in increments: add capacity where measurements show benefit, then re-run workload and failure tests after each increment.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Buying the fastest server-facing NIC

Symptom: link counters show high host-port rates but job throughput is unchanged. Correction: calculate aggregate leaf and spine capacity and inspect the narrowest shared link.

Mixing traffic without a concurrency model

Symptom: checkpoints or tenant bursts cause intermittent collective slowdowns. Correction: separate paths or reserve capacity, then test overlapping workloads rather than isolated flows.

Assuming “non-blocking” means every application is fast

Symptom: the fabric has nominal full bisection but GPUs remain idle. Correction: inspect host PCIe, NIC placement, collective software, storage and synchronization behavior.

Ignoring negotiated-speed mismatches

Symptom: one port or path repeatedly becomes a hotspot. Correction: audit every optic, cable, NIC and switch port and alert on unexpected downshifts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Testing only synthetic bandwidth

Symptom: a link benchmark looks excellent but distributed jobs do not improve. Correction: make representative training and inference jobs the acceptance test, with storage and failure traffic included.

Leaving management on a fragile shared path

Symptom: operators lose telemetry or access during data-plane congestion. Correction: preserve a reliable, secured management and support path and verify it during overload and failover tests.

A practical go/no-go checklist

  • The constrained traffic domain is named and its path is documented.
  • The host, NIC/PCIe, switch, storage and software layers have been tested as possible bottlenecks.
  • Aggregate capacity, oversubscription and failure-path capacity are calculated for the target node count.
  • Link speeds, optics, cables, breakouts and firmware are qualified end to end.
  • The selected Ethernet/RoCEv2 or InfiniBand design has an identified operations and support owner.
  • Baseline and post-change tests include collectives, inference concurrency, storage bursts and failover.
  • Acceptance criteria use job throughput, latency, GPU idle time and completion behavior—not port speed alone.
  • Budget includes ports, optics, cabling, power, rack density, spares, software and migration disruption.

Decision rule

Scale bandwidth only when measured workload data ties the performance limit to a specific network path and the proposed design removes that limit at the required concurrency and failure state. Otherwise, spend first on the layer the evidence identifies. This approach keeps a faster fabric from becoming an expensive upgrade that leaves the real bottleneck untouched.
