Before replacing Files by Google, write down the jobs you actually use—cleanup, browsing and searching, renaming, moving or copying files, SD-card access, USB storage, and Safe folder. Then test each job in the replacement on your specific phone and Android version. A system document picker may let you select files, but it is not automatically a complete file-manager substitute. Safe folder needs its own migration plan because its files are hidden from third-party apps, cannot be backed up to Drive from that feature, and can be lost permanently if you reset it.
Start with the jobs you need every week
“File manager” can mean several different things on Android. One person may only open a download and attach it to an email. Another may regularly remove duplicate photos, move videos to a microSD card, rename folders, connect a USB drive, and keep private documents in Safe folder. A replacement that handles the first task may fail at the others.
Open Files by Google and make a short inventory of your routine. Include occasional tasks, not just daily ones: restoring a file from a folder, moving a camera archive, finding a downloaded PDF, or transferring files to removable storage. Mark any task that would be difficult to recover from if it failed. Safe folder contents and files stored only on an SD card or USB drive deserve the highest priority.
- Cleanup suggestions, including temporary files, duplicates, recommended files, screenshots, and unused apps.
- Browsing folders, searching, opening, renaming, copying, and moving files.
- Access to removable SD-card storage.
- Access to USB storage through the phone’s port and connector.
- Private-file storage and recovery, especially Safe folder.
Do not uninstall Files by Google until the replacement has passed a small test with representative files. Keep the original app installed while you check permissions, storage locations, and private-file behavior.

Check Android and app compatibility first
Android version requirements are not interchangeable
Google’s general Files by Google documentation lists Android 8.0 and later as the app’s supported baseline. Google’s separate USB-storage help lists USB-storage access on Android 7.0 and later. Those statements describe Google’s documented functions; they do not prove that every function, device, or alternative app works on every Android release.
Find your version under Settings > About phone > Android version (the wording can vary by manufacturer). Compare that version with the replacement app’s own requirements. Also check whether the app requires a particular Android edition, a manufacturer interface, or a separate permission for photos, videos, music, or all files.
Check device-specific storage behavior
Android builds and manufacturer software can expose storage differently. A candidate may show internal storage but omit a removable card, or provide a picker without a full folder view. Test the exact phone you will use, rather than relying on screenshots from another model.

Compare the capabilities that matter
Use this table as a requirements checklist. “Not stated” means the available documentation does not establish that capability for an unspecified replacement app; it is a prompt to test, not evidence that the feature is absent.

Handle Safe folder before changing apps
Safe folder is not an ordinary directory. Files placed there do not appear in Files by Google search results or categories and cannot be opened by third-party apps. Sharing and Google Drive backup are unavailable from inside Safe folder. A replacement manager should therefore be treated as unrelated to Safe folder unless its documentation explicitly says otherwise.

That is Google’s stated recovery limit. Resetting Safe folder permanently loses its contents. Google also warns against clearing storage or cache with another app and against copying encrypted Safe folder files from an old phone to a new one as a migration shortcut. The lock is not an absolute guarantee: someone with unauthorized access to the phone’s internal storage may potentially access the files.
Safe migration procedure
- List what must survive. Open Safe folder while you still know the PIN or pattern and identify files you need outside the feature.
- Export through the supported in-app flow. Move or share each required file to a normal, accessible location using the controls Safe folder provides. Do not copy its encrypted storage directly with another manager.
- Verify the destination. Close Safe folder, then use an ordinary folder to open a few exported files. Check names, file sizes, and that the destination is included in your normal backup plan.
- Retain the credential. Keep the PIN or pattern available until you have confirmed every needed file is accessible.
- Only then test the replacement. Install and configure the new manager after the Safe folder decision is complete. Do not reset Safe folder to make the new app see it.
If you intend to keep Safe folder, you can continue using it alongside another file manager. The important distinction is that the replacement will not automatically gain access to those protected files.
Test SD-card support with real operations
Google documents copying or moving files to an SD card, but the result depends on how the card is configured. A card adopted as internal storage may not be presented as an SD card in Files by Google, and other managers may label it differently.

- Insert the card and confirm Android detects it under storage settings.
- In the replacement, locate the card and create a test folder.
- Copy a small, noncritical file from internal storage to that folder.
- Open the copied file from the card, then rename it.
- Move the file back to internal storage and confirm that the original operation did not leave an incomplete duplicate.
Repeat the test with the file types you actually use, such as photos, videos, documents, or project archives. A manager that can read a card but cannot write to it is not sufficient for an archive workflow.

Test USB storage and the physical connection
Files by Google’s USB documentation covers browsing, copying, moving, deleting, and renaming files on a connected USB device. Android’s document framework can also expose a temporary USB-storage provider while a drive is connected. Neither description guarantees compatibility with a particular flash drive or adapter.
What must work together
- The phone’s USB port and Android build must support the connection.
- The connector or OTG adapter must match the phone and drive.
- The drive must receive enough power and use a file system Android can read.
- The file manager must request and retain access after the drive is connected.
If your phone requires an adapter, verify its connector and device support before buying anything. The accessory is optional for readers who use USB storage; it is not a universal requirement or a guarantee that a drive will work.
A safe USB test
- Connect the drive with the screen unlocked and wait for Android’s storage notification.
- Open the replacement and confirm that the drive appears as a separate location.
- Copy one small file to the drive, open it there, rename it, and copy it back.
- Delete only the test copy, then use Android’s eject or disconnect control before unplugging.
Test again after reconnecting. If the drive disappears, try a different cable or adapter only after checking that the phone and drive are otherwise supported; do not treat an intermittent connection as a file-manager feature.
Know the difference between a system picker and a file manager
Android’s Storage Access Framework presents a system interface when an app asks you to choose a document or grant access to a directory. Its built-in providers include Downloads, Images, and Videos, while storage services can expose their own providers. A USB drive can appear as a temporary root when connected.

This picker solves selection and permission tasks. It does not, on the documented evidence, provide Files by Google’s cleanup suggestions, a general-purpose browsing and organization workspace, or Safe folder. If your normal workflow is “tap Attach, choose a PDF, and send it,” the picker may be enough. If you organize folders, clean storage, or transfer batches between locations, you need a manager with those operations.
When testing an alternative, launch it directly rather than only through another app’s attachment button. Confirm that you can navigate from the app’s home screen, search, create or rename folders, and perform copy and move operations. A tool that appears only in a document-selection dialog is not necessarily a replacement.

Files by Google presents cleanup as suggestions, including temporary files, duplicates or recommended files, screenshots, and unused apps. Before switching, determine which suggestions you rely on and whether the replacement offers an equivalent review step.
Look for a preview that identifies every item and distinguishes a recommendation from an immediate delete command. Confirm whether selecting “clear junk” permanently removes files, sends them to a trash area, or changes behavior by category. Files deleted or junk cleared in Files by Google are permanently deleted, so export anything you may need before running a cleanup.

Common failure modes and what they mean
The app sees downloads but not your full storage
You may be looking at the Storage Access Framework picker rather than a manager, or the app may have only narrow media permissions. Open the app directly, review its Android permissions, and check whether it documents broader storage access. Do not grant unrestricted access unless the workflow requires it.
The SD card is visible but copy fails
Check whether the card is adopted as internal storage, whether Android has granted write access, and whether the destination has free space. Repeat with a tiny test file. A successful read does not prove that writes, renames, and moves are supported.
USB storage disconnects during a transfer
Stop using the drive until you can establish a stable connection. Confirm the connector, adapter, power, and phone support, then reconnect and test with a small file. Never unplug during a write; eject it through Android first.
Safe folder files are missing in the new app
This is expected behavior, not necessarily data loss. Safe folder files are hidden from search and categories and cannot be opened by third-party apps. Return to Files by Google, unlock the folder, and export needed files through its supported flow. Do not clear app data, reset the folder, or copy encrypted files directly.
A forgotten Safe folder credential blocks access
Google states that forgetting the PIN or pattern prevents access. There is no safe migration shortcut around that restriction; resetting the folder permanently loses its contents.
Use a staged switch instead of an all-at-once replacement
- Record your baseline. Note the Android version, storage locations, removable media, and Safe folder files you depend on.
- Install the candidate alongside Files by Google. Grant only the permissions needed for the first test.
- Run the capability tests. Browse, search, rename, copy, move, create a folder, and open representative files.
- Test removable storage. Perform the SD-card and USB read/write checks if you use either medium.
- Validate cleanup separately. Review the candidate’s proposed deletions and avoid irreversible actions until you understand them.
- Complete Safe folder handling. Export required files or deliberately keep using Safe folder in the original app.
- Use the replacement for a normal cycle. Download, organize, and retrieve files over several days while the original app remains available.
- Remove the old app only after verification. Keep a copy of important files in an accessible, backed-up location before uninstalling or disabling anything.
Make the final decision from evidence on your phone
Choose the replacement only if it passes every task you marked as essential. A lightweight picker may be ideal for occasional attachments but unsuitable for storage maintenance. A full manager may handle folders and removable media yet offer no equivalent to Safe folder. Keeping Files by Google for Safe folder while using another app for ordinary browsing is also a valid outcome.
The deciding evidence is practical: your Android version, the candidate’s documented requirements, successful operations on your internal and removable storage, a clear deletion model, and a Safe folder plan that does not depend on unsupported imports or forgotten credentials.
