Your existing doorbell wires may work with a smart doorbell, but compatibility cannot be assumed from the fact that a mechanical bell already operates. Before buying, identify the exact smart-doorbell model and market version, verify the transformer’s AC voltage and VA rating, determine whether the indoor chime needs a connector or bypass, and check whether the wiring is part of an intercom or gate-control system. If you cannot identify the transformer or wiring confidently, have a qualified installer or electrician assess it before you disconnect anything.

1. Identify the exact doorbell model and regional version

“Wired smart doorbell” describes a category, not one electrical standard. Requirements differ by manufacturer, product generation and country. A model sold in North America can have different voltage, transformer or chime requirements from a similarly named model sold elsewhere.

Write down the complete model name, generation and model number before checking your wiring. Then open the current installation guide for the version sold in your country. Do not rely on a retailer title, an older review or a guide for a battery model. Google’s compatibility table, for example, separates wired and battery Nest models and distinguishes regional requirements for some products.

The installation document is also where you will find the approved chime arrangement, whether a supplied connector or power kit is mandatory, and whether your existing wiring can be reused. Manufacturer specifications can change, so use the current local manual at the time of purchase.

2. Check the transformer’s AC voltage and VA rating

The transformer converts household mains power to the low-voltage AC used by a conventional doorbell. A smart doorbell must receive both the right voltage and enough apparent power, expressed in volt-amperes (VA). Matching only the voltage is not enough.

Where to find the rating

Look for a label showing an output such as “16 V AC” and a VA value. Google says the transformer may be inside the indoor chime enclosure, near the breaker or fuse box, or in a basement or crawl space. Photograph the label so you can compare it with the selected doorbell’s manual.

Published examples from current manufacturer guidance

Doorbell and context Required AC voltage Transformer VA requirement Qualification
Google Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd generation) or Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd generation) 16–24 V AC 10–40 VA North American requirements in Google Nest Help’s current compatibility table, accessed October 13, 2026
eufy wired video doorbell 16–24 V AC At least 30 VA Requirement in the cited US transformer and chime instructions, accessed October 13, 2026
Arlo Video Doorbell (2nd Generation), models AVD4001 and AVD3001 8–24 V AC At least 10 VA Arlo installation guidance for those model numbers, accessed October 13, 2026

These figures are examples for the named products and contexts, not a universal smart-doorbell specification. A transformer marked 16 V AC may satisfy one model but fail another if its VA rating is too low. Conversely, installing a higher-VA transformer without checking the doorbell’s permitted range can create a voltage or wiring mismatch.

Compare the label and the manual line by line: output voltage in AC, minimum VA, any maximum VA or model-specific limits, and the country or regional version. If the label is missing, unreadable or shows DC rather than AC, stop and get qualified help instead of guessing.

3. Confirm what happens to the indoor chime

A working mechanical chime does not prove that it will continue to work after the smart doorbell is installed. Smart doorbells often need continuous power, while a traditional button briefly energizes the chime. The manufacturer may therefore require a connector, power kit, software setting or a bypass.

Google Nest wired models

Google says the cited wired Nest models must use the included chime connector. The connector supplies continuous power to the doorbell and protects the existing chime circuit. Omitting it can leave the installation outside the documented configuration, even when the transformer voltage appears correct.

eufy wired video doorbell

The cited US eufy instructions say the wired video doorbell does not work with the original indoor chime and direct the installer to bypass that chime. In that arrangement, the old bell should not be expected to ring unless the manufacturer’s instructions describe a supported alternative.

Other models

Chime behavior for another model must be taken from its own manual. Check whether it supports a mechanical chime, a digital chime, a supplied adapter, a separately sold power kit or no existing chime at all. Treat “compatible with existing wiring” and “compatible with existing chime” as separate questions.

4. Determine whether the wiring is part of an intercom or gate system

Some doorbell buttons are connected to an apartment intercom, access-control panel, gate controller or proprietary building system rather than to a simple two-wire transformer-and-chime circuit. Those systems can carry both power and signaling that a consumer smart doorbell does not understand.

Google says intercom, gate-control and other integrated systems typically do not work with Nest doorbells. The cited eufy guidance likewise says its wired video doorbell does not work with existing intercom power and signal systems. It does describe a possible reuse of the physical wiring when the old intercom function is permanently abandoned and the installation directions are followed. Reusing cable is therefore different from retaining the intercom service.

5. Verify voltage without creating an electrical hazard

Google Nest Help states that “The most accurate way to check if your doorbell system is compatible is to measure the voltage on its wires.” That measurement is normally made at the disconnected low-voltage doorbell wires with a multimeter set for AC voltage, but the exact procedure and safety steps must come from the selected manufacturer’s instructions.

Use the manufacturer’s safety sequence

  1. Read the installation guide for the exact model and country version before removing the old button.
  2. Locate the transformer and record its label information. If you cannot find it, stop rather than infer the rating from the chime’s appearance.
  3. Turn off doorbell power at the circuit breaker when the instructions require wiring to be disconnected. Arlo specifically instructs installers to switch off the circuit breaker and recommends an electrician when wiring help is needed.
  4. Only perform a voltage measurement if you are competent to use a multimeter safely and the manufacturer permits it. Otherwise, have an electrician measure the circuit.
  5. Compare the measured AC voltage and transformer VA with the model’s written requirements before connecting the new doorbell.

Low-voltage doorbell wiring is safer than exposed mains wiring, but the transformer’s primary side is connected to household electricity. Do not open a breaker panel, move a transformer or handle uncertain conductors without appropriate training. eufy’s instructions tell users to turn off main power and hire a licensed electrician if they are uncomfortable handling the wiring.

6. Decide whether the transformer needs upgrading

A transformer upgrade is conditional, not an automatic accessory purchase. You need one only when the existing unit falls outside the selected doorbell’s voltage or VA requirements, is damaged, or cannot provide stable power under the manufacturer’s stated conditions.

Google notes that some homes may need an upgrade. eufy says an existing transformer may not provide enough power for its cited wired product. Those statements do not mean every older doorbell requires replacement. The correct replacement must match the target model, local electrical practice, wiring condition and enclosure.

Do not choose a generic “smart doorbell transformer” by voltage alone. Confirm AC output, VA capacity, physical installation requirements, regional electrical rules and compatibility with the chime connector or bypass arrangement. A licensed electrician should install or replace the transformer when the rating is unknown, the transformer is located in a mains enclosure, or the circuit includes other equipment.

7. Compare wired, battery and plug-in alternatives

If the existing circuit is unsuitable, you may not need to rebuild it. Some manufacturers offer battery-powered versions or an indoor power-adapter option for installations where wired compatibility cannot be established. These alternatives change the maintenance and installation requirements, so check the precise model’s instructions rather than assuming that a battery model is electrically interchangeable with a wired one.

  • Stay with a wired model when the transformer meets the exact AC and VA requirements and the chime or bypass arrangement is documented.
  • Choose a battery model when running a new low-voltage circuit is impractical and you can accept charging or battery replacement.
  • Use a plug-in indoor adapter only when the manufacturer lists that adapter for the selected doorbell and your installation location supports it safely.
  • Use professional installation when the wiring is integrated with an intercom, gate, lock or shared building system.

8. A pre-purchase compatibility checklist

Complete this checklist before ordering the replacement:

  1. Record the exact smart-doorbell model, generation, model number and sales region.
  2. Download the current installation guide for that version.
  3. Find the transformer and record its AC voltage and VA rating.
  4. Compare both values with the doorbell’s minimum, maximum and permitted range.
  5. Identify the indoor chime as mechanical, digital, integrated or absent.
  6. Confirm whether the model requires a chime connector, power kit, software setting or bypass.
  7. Check whether the button wiring is connected to an intercom, gate controller or access system.
  8. Determine whether the existing wiring can be reused if the old system is being abandoned.
  9. Plan a qualified voltage measurement if the label is missing or uncertain.
  10. Decide on a transformer upgrade, battery model or plug-in alternative only after the model-specific checks.

9. Common compatibility outcomes

The transformer matches, but the chime is unsupported

Proceed only with the documented connector, power kit or bypass. The doorbell can be electrically suitable while the original indoor bell is not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The voltage is within range, but VA is below the minimum

Do not install until the transformer is replaced or the manufacturer confirms another approved power arrangement. Meeting the voltage number alone is insufficient.

The transformer label cannot be found

Search the chime enclosure, the area near the breaker or fuse box, and basement or crawl-space locations. If it remains unidentified, arrange a professional assessment or an approved measurement rather than guessing.

The wires serve an intercom or gate

Assume the consumer doorbell is incompatible until the manufacturer and a qualified installer confirm a supported conversion. Preserving access-control functions may require a different system.

The existing system is unsuitable but a camera is still needed

Evaluate a battery-powered or manufacturer-approved plug-in model. Verify its installation instructions, weather exposure requirements and power source separately from the old doorbell circuit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. The practical decision rule

Buy the wired smart doorbell only when four facts are documented: the exact regional model, a transformer whose AC voltage and VA satisfy that model, a confirmed chime or bypass arrangement, and wiring that is not an unsupported intercom or gate-control circuit. If any one of those facts is unknown, pause the purchase or installation and obtain the model manual or qualified electrical advice first.
