Before releasing an AI-assisted podcast, verify five things: where AI appears, what each destination requires you to disclose, whether every recognizable person has given permission, whether every asset is licensed, and whether the finished episode could mislead listeners. Then review advertising disclosures and the final metadata/export. Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube apply different rules, so one disclosure or permission check does not automatically cover every version of your show.
Start with an AI-use and destination map
Create a one-page inventory before you edit the final master. Record every place AI was used, even when it only assisted production, and list every destination separately. An audio RSS feed, an Apple Podcasts listing, a Spotify listing and a YouTube video are separate publication contexts.
| Production element | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Script or research assistance | Which passages were generated, rewritten or fact-checked with AI | You need a human accuracy review and a record of source material. |
| Host voice | Text-to-speech voice, cloned voice, hired performer or your own voice clone | A recognizable voice can create consent, impersonation and disclosure issues. |
| Music and sound | Generated composition, generated recording, licensed track, sample or sound effect | Generation does not prove that the input or output may be distributed. |
| Artwork and video | Generated cover art, photographs, avatars, captions and synthetic footage | Rights, identity and YouTube disclosure checks may differ from the audio feed. |
| Destinations | RSS feed, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube and promotional clips | Each service can apply a different disclosure or likeness rule. |
Keep the inventory with your episode records. It lets an editor answer a platform complaint or a rights question without guessing which model, file or permission was involved.

| Apple Podcasts audio or video podcast | Prominently disclose AI-generated audio or video in the episode content and in metadata for each episode and the show; include only material you have rights to use; do not deceptively portray real events. | Apple’s cited guideline does not prescribe one mandatory sentence. |
| Spotify podcast | Get permission before using another creator’s or host’s recognizable voice, image or other identifying likeness. | The cited policy is an impersonation restriction, not a blanket disclosure requirement for every use of AI. |
| YouTube video version | Use YouTube’s altered or synthetic-content disclosure process when the video falls within its rule. | This is a video-upload control. It is not automatically satisfied by an audio-feed description. |
| Sponsored or affiliate episode | Review material brand relationships and make an understandable advertising or endorsement disclosure. | FTC guidance is U.S. guidance; the correct wording depends on the relationship and context. |
Apple Podcasts: disclose in the episode and metadata
Apple Podcasts for Creators says creators using AI to generate audio or video—including synthetic voices, AI-generated hosts or on-screen personas, and AI-synthesized replicas of real individuals—must prominently disclose that use to audiences in the content and metadata for each episode and show. Put the disclosure where a listener will encounter it, not only in a buried credit field. Apply it to both an audio episode and a video podcast when either contains qualifying generated material.

Apple does not provide a mandatory sentence in the cited Content Guidelines. You can write a plain-language statement such as “This episode includes an AI-generated narration voice,” but label it as your own explanation rather than official Apple wording. Make the statement accurate about what was generated; do not imply that the entire production was synthetic when AI only removed background noise.
Spotify: focus on unauthorized likeness and impersonation
Spotify’s support policy says it will remove podcast content that impersonates another creator or host’s likeness without permission, whether the likeness was made with AI cloning or another method. The rule can apply when a recognizable voice, image or combination of identifying characteristics remains, even if you omit the person’s name and call the show an AI version. Keep permission records that identify the person, the exact voice or image, the permitted uses and the distribution channels.
The cited Spotify policy mentions certain exceptions, including some parody, but it does not create a universal parody safe harbor. Do not assume that labeling a work satire, changing the metadata or adding a disclaimer cures an unauthorized impersonation.

YouTube: disclose qualifying altered or synthetic video
For a video upload, review YouTube’s current altered or synthetic-content control and answer it based on the actual footage, voice and edits. YouTube distinguishes qualifying realistic synthetic or altered content from examples such as ordinary production assistance and cloning your own voice for voiceovers or dubs. The treatment can depend on whether viewers could mistake the material for an authentic person, place or event.
Do not rely on the disclosure in your RSS description to satisfy this upload step. Persistent failure to disclose qualifying content can lead to enforcement consequences, so check the control again when the interface or policy changes.
Advertising and endorsements are a separate review
FTC endorsement guidance covers advertising in podcasts and other media. Identify sponsor reads, testimonials, affiliate links, discount codes, product claims and any other material connection to a brand. The audience should be able to understand the relationship; an AI-generated host must not sound like an independent user if the statement is actually paid or incentivized. FTC materials do not supply one universal phrase for every arrangement, and the cited guidance is U.S.-focused. Consider the law where your audience and business operate.

Obtain consent for voices, faces and identity cues
Ask whether a listener could reasonably recognize a real person from the voice alone or from a combination of voice, name, image, biography, catchphrases and other details. A permission record should cover:
- the identity of the person and the specific recording, model or likeness being used;
- the permitted purpose, such as narration, fictional dialogue, advertising or promotional clips;
- the duration, territories, platforms and monetization rights;
- whether the permission includes future episodes, edits, translations and video versions; and
- how the person can withdraw or amend permission, if your agreement allows that.
Do not treat a voice-model provider’s terms as permission from the person whose voice you cloned. A contract with a performer may also limit synthetic reproduction, training or reuse, so read the engagement and model license together. If the voice is not intended to represent a real person, keep evidence showing how it was selected and labeled.
Clear rights for every included element
Make an asset list and attach a license, assignment, release or other permission to each item. Apple requires creators to include only material they have rights to use and refers to copyright, publicity and trademark rights. Clearance must cover the way you will actually publish, including monetization, trailers, social clips and a video edition.

AI generation does not establish that an input was licensed or that an output is protected by copyright. The U.S. Copyright Office’s multipart AI report addresses digital replicas, copyrightability of generative-AI outputs and AI training. Part 1 was published July 31, 2024; Part 2, on output copyrightability, January 29, 2025; and Part 3 was listed as pre-publication on May 9, 2025. Those dates describe the agency’s work, not a universal answer for your particular script, music, voice or training input. Rights outcomes depend on the content, contracts, permissions, facts and applicable jurisdiction.

Pay special attention to reconstructed or synthetic audio. A generated clip that sounds like a real interview, emergency broadcast, public statement or historical recording can cause listeners to believe that a real person said or did something when they did not. Apple prohibits AI use that deceptively portrays real-life events, including fabricated news stories and manipulated clips that present false narratives. News, documentary, biography and public-affairs shows need the strictest review: identify reconstructions in the narration and never edit them to appear authentic.

Review titles, descriptions, credits and exports
Open the final episode record on every destination, not just the hosting dashboard. Check that the title, description, chapter labels, guest names, pronunciation, artwork, credits and links describe the episode accurately. Apple requires the AI disclosure in metadata for each episode and the show. Do not credit a cloned voice to the real person it resembles, and do not omit a recognizable person from credits merely because their name is absent from the title.
Verify the technical master after all edits: correct episode, no unintended silence, clipped audio or hidden test lines, synchronized captions, readable on-screen disclosure and the correct artwork. Keep the exact uploaded file and a timestamped copy of the metadata so you can prove what listeners received.
A release workflow you can repeat
- Inventory AI use. Mark script, voice, music, effects, artwork, captions and video assistance.
- List destinations. Separate the RSS feed, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube and promotional uploads.
- Classify identity risk. Flag any recognizable voice, face, name, persona or event reconstruction.
- Collect permissions. Confirm releases cover synthetic reproduction, edits, monetization and every intended platform.
- Clear assets. Attach rights evidence for text, recordings, samples, effects, images and clips.
- Draft disclosures. Prepare an intelligible Apple disclosure for the content and metadata, and complete YouTube’s altered-content step when applicable.
- Fact-check. Verify names, quotations, dates, claims and the distinction between real and reconstructed material.
- Review advertising. Identify sponsors, affiliates and incentives; make the material connection clear to listeners.
- Inspect metadata and export. Check titles, credits, descriptions, captions, artwork and the final file on each destination.
- Archive the release packet. Save the AI-use inventory, permissions, licenses, disclosure text, final master and published metadata.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Failure | Why it fails | Fix before release |
|---|---|---|
| “AI-assisted” appears only on a website | Apple requires prominent disclosure in the episode content and metadata. | Add a listener-facing disclosure to the episode and show metadata. |
| One disclosure is copied to every platform | Spotify’s likeness rule and YouTube’s video control address different risks. | Run the destination-specific checks independently. |
| A cloned celebrity or creator voice is unnamed | Spotify can treat a recognizable likeness as impersonation even without a name in metadata. | Obtain permission or replace the voice; do not rely on a label or parody claim. |
| A generator supplied music, so it is assumed safe | Tool output does not prove input licensing or unrestricted distribution rights. | Review the asset license and clear composition, recording and samples. |
| A fabricated interview is presented as archival audio | Listeners may be misled about a real event or statement. | Remove it or clearly identify the reconstruction in the audio and metadata. |
| A sponsor read sounds like personal experience | The material relationship may be hidden from the audience. | Rewrite and place a clear advertising disclosure where listeners hear it. |
When to obtain specialist advice
Get jurisdiction-specific legal advice when a real person’s likeness is central to the show, a disputed recording or substantial music is involved, the episode makes allegations about a person, or a sponsor contract imposes detailed claims and approval rules. Platform policies and upload interfaces change, and the cited U.S. sources do not cover every host, directory, distributor or country. Recheck each actual destination immediately before publication.
