Before preordering, check the exact edition and platform, total price, charge date, release and early-access dates, physical delivery estimate, bonus conditions, and the cancellation and refund rules for the seller and region you will use. There is no universal preorder policy: download status, purchase timing, format, and local consumer rights can all affect your options.
Use this checklist before you pay
A preorder is a commitment made before the game is available at launch. It may make sense if the specific edition and terms suit you, but a label such as “Deluxe” or a listed bonus does not by itself establish value. Check the listing and checkout terms for the exact product, region, and platform.
- Identify the edition. Write down what is included: the base game, expansions, cosmetic items, in-game currency, or other extras. Compare the price difference with the content you actually want; do not assume a higher-tier edition is a better deal.
- Confirm platform compatibility. Check the exact console or PC storefront, console generation, and region. For a physical copy, verify that your device can use the format; for example, whether it has a disc drive. Do not rely on a game title alone to establish compatibility.
- Separate release from early access. Note the official release date and any separate advance-access date, and confirm which edition includes early play. Dates and access can differ by edition or region when the product listing says so.
- Check the full checkout cost. Verify the final price, applicable tax and shipping, and whether the displayed price is recurring or promotional if the seller presents it that way. Make sure the payment method will remain valid when the seller charges it.
- Find out when payment happens. A digital preorder may be charged later rather than at checkout, while a physical preorder may be charged immediately. Check what happens if payment authorization fails and whether you can cancel before then.
- Read physical fulfillment terms. Check the shipping estimate, delivery method, cancellation cutoff, and return policy. A release date is not necessarily a delivery date.
- Verify bonus conditions. Confirm that the listing actually promises the bonus, whether it is tied to a particular seller or edition, and how and when it is delivered. A bonus is not guaranteed for every game.
- Locate the cancellation and refund route. Read the policy that applies to your country, seller, purchase format, and storefront before placing the order. Also check whether downloading, preloading, streaming, or starting early access changes eligibility.
- Decide how much uncertainty you accept. If reviews or performance information are unavailable when you order, weigh that uncertainty against the specific value of buying early. Avoid assuming a game will be scarce, discounted later, or technically sound without title-specific evidence.
What does the preorder edition include?
Use the product listing to make an item-by-item comparison rather than treating edition names as specifications. Record the included game and each extra, then ask whether the extras are usable on your platform and whether they require another purchase or subscription. The available policy information here does not establish the value of any particular game’s edition.

Also check the bonus delivery method. A code may be sent separately, appear in an account, or become available only after payment processing; the listing and seller terms should say what applies. Nintendo, for example, says preorder bonus codes are not available until payment is processed and the game is preloaded, no sooner than seven days before release. When do I get charged for a preorder?
Payment timing depends on the format and seller. These examples apply only to the named storefronts and regions; they are not a general industry rule.
- Nintendo eShop in the US: Digital preorders are charged in full no sooner than seven days before release. If payment fails, the preorder is cancelled. Nintendo says cancellation is available until payment is processed and the game is preloaded. Nintendo’s preorder FAQ
- Nintendo Store physical pre-purchases in the US: Nintendo charges the full amount immediately. Its stated shipping estimate is one to three business days after the item’s release date. This estimate applies to Nintendo Store, not other retailers. Nintendo Store overview
- Other sellers and platforms: Check the checkout page and the seller’s own terms for the charge date, authorization requirements, and what happens if payment fails. Do not assume that another digital store or a physical retailer uses Nintendo’s timing.
Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers are not reserved when an eShop preorder is placed. The voucher is redeemed when preorder payment is collected, so using eligible vouchers beforehand can leave the preorder without the intended payment method and cause payment failure. Can I cancel a game preorder?
Often, but the answer depends on the storefront, country, purchase date, format, and whether the game has started downloading or streaming. Read the policy for the account and seller you will actually use. The following examples show why one platform’s terms should not be treated as universal rules.
PlayStation Store: US support terms
Under the US support terms, a refund for preorder content may be requested before release. If you bought it 14 days or less before release, the stated request period is within 14 days of purchase. If you bought it more than 14 days before release, the stated cancellation window runs until release. In either case, the main content must not have begun downloading or streaming. If a preorder includes extra content available immediately, cancelling can also remove access to that extra content. These are US support terms, not a worldwide PlayStation rule; check the policy for your country and the terms attached to your purchase.
PlayStation Store: UK policy
The UK cancellation policy also treats downloading or streaming the main preorder content as material to refund eligibility. It notes that rights can be affected by consent to immediate delivery. Nintendo eShop: US digital preorders
Nintendo says cancellation is available until payment is processed and the game is preloaded. Since payment occurs no sooner than seven days before release, that cutoff is tied to the later payment and preload process, not simply the day the preorder was placed. Nintendo’s preorder FAQ

Steam
Steam says a preorder can be refunded at any time before release. After release, a preordered game remains eligible if the refund request is submitted within two weeks of release and the game has been played for less than two hours. If an order was placed more than six months in advance, refunding to the original payment method may not be possible, though Steam Wallet credit may still be requested. Does advance access change the refund clock?
Steam distinguishes “Advance Access” from “Early Access.” Advance Access is an opportunity for people who pre-purchased a game to play before its official release; Early Access is a development model. Steam says its standard 14-day refund period begins on the full release date, and an Advance Access preorder can be refunded before Advance Access begins. Before buying, check which edition has access, when it starts, and how the terms apply to that specific listing. Do not confuse a chance to play before launch with a game still in development. How do digital and physical preorders differ?
Digital terms can hinge on payment processing, preload, or whether the content has begun downloading or streaming. Physical terms center on charge timing, shipment, cancellation cutoff, and return policy. The seller’s own page is essential: Nintendo Store’s US estimate of one to three business days after release does not establish how quickly another retailer ships, or whether it accepts cancellations or returns. For physical purchases, distinguish the release date from the date the item is expected to arrive. For digital purchases, distinguish placing the preorder from payment collection and the start of any preload. Those events can affect when money leaves your account and whether cancellation is still available.

What should I do if I want to cancel or request a refund?
- Open the order details in the account or retailer site where you bought the game, and identify the seller and country-specific policy attached to that order.
- Check the product’s status. Note the purchase date, release date, charge status, download or streaming status, preload status, and any early-access start date.
- Use the seller’s cancellation or refund route promptly. Do not assume that deleting a download, removing the item from a library, or contacting the game publisher cancels the store transaction.
- Check the refund destination and any immediate extras. Confirm whether the refund goes to the original payment method or store credit, and whether cancellation removes access to bonus content already delivered.
- Consider local consumer protections. Store terms do not replace legal rights that may apply in your country. If the seller’s policy and your understanding of those rights differ, consult the relevant local consumer guidance.
Which preorder is worth paying for?
There is no title-independent answer. Compare the specific edition’s total price and included content against the access date, bonus conditions, charge timing, refund flexibility, physical delivery, and whether the content works without a subscription or extra purchase. Give the most weight to the factors that matter to you, and do not pay early solely because an edition has a premium name or a bonus whose terms you have not verified.
Where meaningful reviews or performance details are not yet available, treat that as an uncertainty to decide on—not proof that a game will launch well or poorly. A preorder is a better-informed choice when you understand what you are buying, when payment and delivery happen, and what you can do if you change your mind.
Check the policy that applies to your purchase
