Before placing an iPhone preorder, confirm five things: the exact model and storage, the total cost under your chosen payment route, whether the phone will be unlocked, the conditions on trade-in or carrier credits, and the delivery or pickup date shown for your location. A low headline price can depend on a specific carrier, plan, activation, device condition, or months of bill credits.
This guide is written for U.S. buyers. Apple’s September 11, 2026 announcement set iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max preorders for September 12 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time; that window has passed. For any current purchase, use the live Apple shop and checkout estimates rather than relying on launch-day dates.
1. Start with the exact model and configuration
Do not begin with a carrier promotion. First decide which iPhone meets your needs, then price that configuration through each buying route. Apple’s current U.S. shop lists iPhone 18 Pro and other models, but the lineup, inventory, prices and delivery estimates can change.
Compare the specifications that affect your use
- Size and weight: choose the display size you can comfortably carry and use one-handed.
- Storage: estimate your present photo, video, app and offline-media usage, then allow room for several years of updates. Storage cannot be added later.
- Camera and performance features: compare the features you will actually use, such as high-resolution video, zoom, display brightness, gaming performance or connectivity.
- Battery expectations: larger models may suit long workdays or heavy video use, while a smaller phone may be easier to handle.
- Color and availability: a less popular color or capacity may have a different delivery estimate, so select a backup configuration before ordering.
Write down the model, color and capacity before opening financing or trade-in screens. Changing the configuration later can change eligibility, monthly payments and the delivery date.

2. Confirm carrier compatibility, unlocking and activation
Buying an iPhone and connecting it to your mobile service are separate decisions. Verify your carrier, country, plan and activation requirements before paying.
Know when the phone is unlocked
Apple says an iPhone purchased outright or with an Apple financing option is unlocked. An iPhone financed through the AT&T Installment Plan, T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan or Verizon Device Payment Program is locked to that carrier until the device is paid in full, according to Apple’s shopping-help guidance. A carrier’s own unlocking rules may also matter after payoff.
If you travel, change carriers, use a second line or want to resell the phone, an unlocked purchase can be worth more flexibility even when its initial price is higher. Ask the carrier how activation, payoff and unlocking are handled before accepting an installment offer.

Device compatibility alone does not prove that your service will activate. Apple advises checking whether your carrier supports eSIM and confirming support for your particular cellular plan. Ask whether your existing number can be transferred electronically, whether an in-store visit is required and whether an older physical SIM will work in the model sold in your region.
For a financed carrier order, confirm which account holder must authorize activation, whether a credit check is required and what happens if activation fails. Keep your account PIN, billing address and identification available.

3. Compare the complete cost, not the advertised monthly figure
Make a side-by-side calculation for every route you would realistically use. Include the amount charged today, the number and size of installments, interest or financing fees, required service, activation charges, taxes, trade-in value and the timing of any credits.

Do not treat a monthly bill credit as an upfront discount. If a carrier advertises credits over a set number of billing cycles, calculate the amount you would pay before each credit, the service cost required to keep receiving it and the balance remaining if you leave early. Compare the total of device payments plus required service, not just the first month’s figure.

Check taxes, fees and approval conditions
Taxes may be collected at checkout even when the device price is financed. Financing can require credit approval, a down payment or a particular account status. A promotion may exclude business accounts, prepaid lines, existing installment balances or certain storage capacities. Read the terms attached to the exact model and location before submitting the order.
4. Evaluate trade-in value and restrictions
Apple’s trade-in program can reduce the purchase price or provide value on a gift card, but the amount depends on the eligible device and its condition. Obtain the live estimate for your exact phone rather than relying on a generic model value.
Document the phone’s condition
- Record the model, storage capacity and serial or IMEI number.
- Check the screen, frame, cameras, buttons, ports and battery-related symptoms.
- Remove your passcode, sign out of your account and disable device-tracking features only after your data is backed up.
- Photograph the device while it is working and before shipment.
Read what happens if the inspection finds damage or a different storage capacity. The final value can be lower than the initial estimate, and you may have a limited period to accept a revised amount or have the device returned.

Compare Apple’s estimate with a carrier promotion
A carrier may combine a trade-in with monthly bill credits, while Apple may apply an immediate credit or issue a gift card. Compare the net value, the number of months required, the service plan you must retain and the consequence of canceling or upgrading early. A larger headline trade-in amount is not necessarily the better deal if it depends on an expensive plan or forfeited credits.

Apple states that delivery choices and timeframes for the item and your location appear at checkout. The delivery estimate is also shown in the order confirmation and in Order Status. Treat an estimate as location- and inventory-dependent, not as a guaranteed launch-day arrival.
For delivery
- Enter the complete address, including apartment or unit information.
- Check whether an adult signature, identification or a secure handoff is required.
- Confirm that the shipping name matches the payment or account information when required.
- Use Order Status after purchase and watch for changes to the estimate.
For store pickup
Select a specific store and verify that the exact color and capacity are available. Pickup windows can disappear while you are checking out. Bring the identification and payment method listed in the pickup instructions, and confirm whether another person may collect the order.
If the date is critical, compare delivery with pickup before paying. Do not cancel an existing phone or trade in your current device until the replacement is physically activated and your data is confirmed.
6. Decide whether protection is appropriate
Apple’s launch announcement directs buyers to its current AppleCare options, but coverage, deductibles, exclusions and prices vary by device, location and plan. Open the current terms for the exact iPhone before adding protection.

Base the decision on your repair risk, accidental-damage history, travel, replacement budget and access to authorized service. Check whether loss or theft is included, how claims work, what service fees apply and whether the plan must be purchased within a limited period. Do not assume that a carrier insurance plan and Apple coverage provide the same benefits.
7. Prepare everything before the preorder window or checkout
Preparation reduces typing and gives you time to resolve financing or trade-in problems before inventory becomes scarce. Apple’s 2026 launch guidance recommended choosing the model and accessories, completing financing or leasing pre-approval and setting up trade-in before preorders opened.
- Confirm your Apple Account and contact details. Make sure your phone number, email, billing address and shipping address are current.
- Choose a primary and backup configuration. Record the model, capacity, color and any accessories you actually need.
- Check financing or leasing approval. Complete any available pre-approval and note the approved term, down payment and account used.
- Collect trade-in information. Have the old phone’s model, storage and IMEI ready, and back up its data.
- Verify carrier details. Confirm eSIM support, account credentials, plan eligibility and whether the new device will be locked.
- Review the saved bag. A saved bag can be a time-saving preparation step for a launch, but it does not reserve inventory or guarantee a delivery date.
- Set a personal stop point. Decide the maximum total cost and latest acceptable delivery date before promotions create urgency.
8. Use a simple decision test before ordering
Proceed only when you can answer each question with the terms shown for your exact order:
- Which model, storage capacity and color am I buying?
- What is the total cost after tax, financing charges, trade-in and required service?
- Will the phone be unlocked, and if not, what event removes the lock?
- Does my carrier support eSIM and activation for this plan?
- Is the trade-in value final, conditional or subject to inspection?
- Are promotional credits immediate or spread across future bills?
- What happens to unpaid device balances and credits if I cancel service, change plans or upgrade?
- What delivery or pickup date is shown for my ZIP code and selected configuration?
- What protection coverage, exclusions and service fees apply?
Save screenshots or download the offer summary, financing agreement, trade-in estimate and order confirmation. Those records make it easier to resolve a changed credit, a revised trade-in value or a delayed shipment.

Assuming every iPhone is unlocked
Fix: read the financing route’s lock language. Apple’s stated unlocked treatment applies to paying in full or using an Apple financing option; specified carrier installment plans can remain locked until payoff.
Ignoring eSIM activation
Fix: obtain confirmation for your particular plan, not merely the carrier’s general device-compatibility page.
Sending the old phone too soon
Fix: back up and transfer your data, activate the replacement and verify calls, messages, authentication codes and photos before handing over the trade-in.

Fix: check the estimate at checkout and again in the confirmation and Order Status, and keep your current phone until the new one arrives.
Ordering a configuration that does not fit your budget
Fix: set a maximum total cost in advance and use a lower capacity, different model or delayed purchase if the exact offer exceeds it.
10. What is different for buyers outside the United States?
The carrier, financing and unlocking details above are based on Apple’s U.S. guidance. Other countries can have different taxes, consumer protections, SIM formats, installment rules, launch dates and carrier requirements. Use the local Apple store and your carrier’s local terms for availability, activation, trade-in and returns. Do not assume that a U.S. promotion or an unlocked-device policy applies in another market.
11. The date check matters
Apple announced on September 11, 2026 that iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max preorders would begin on September 12 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time. Those dates are historical as of October 15, 2026. If you are buying now, the relevant facts are the live model listing, current price, stock, promotion terms and checkout estimate. Use the shop’s present information instead of a launch article’s promised timing.
