Before moving Visio diagrams, test copies of representative files in the destination tool and compare the results with the originals. A successful VSDX import does not prove that pages, editable objects, links, data, embedded images, or interactive behavior have carried over correctly. Inventory what each diagram depends on, run a small pilot, and decide file by file whether to migrate, rebuild, archive, or keep a static reference.
Start by identifying what each diagram needs to preserve
A Visio file may contain more than visible shapes and lines. Before choosing an import route, record which features matter to the people who use the diagram. Microsoft’s feature comparison and its list of Visio for the web editing limitations are useful prompts for this inventory; they do not establish that a particular third-party tool will preserve or lose any feature.
- Structure: page count, important shapes, labels, and connector routing.
- Data: shape data, data connections, or other information attached to the diagram.
- Navigation and behavior: hyperlinks and any interactive actions used in the workflow.
- Appearance: fonts, fills, visual effects, specialized shapes, and embedded images.
- Use after migration: whether people need to edit native objects, collaborate, or only view and share a fixed version.
Microsoft describes features such as shape data, hyperlinks, and connected data in its Visio version and feature comparison. Its Visio for the web editing limitations also identifies data-connected diagrams and advanced features as relevant considerations. Treat these as prompts to check your own files, not as a compatibility verdict for another product.
Keep the original VSDX and choose the right kind of output
Keep untouched copies of source files before converting or importing them. Record each extension and, when known, the Visio version or plan used to open or edit the file. Microsoft describes VSDX as a structured package based on Open Packaging Conventions and XML, with parts and relationships for elements such as shapes, pages, and images. That structure enables file-level interoperability, but it does not guarantee that another tool will reproduce Visio-specific rendering or behavior. Choose an output based on the intended use. Visio can save diagrams as PDF and as graphic files such as PNG, JPEG, EMF, and SVG. A PDF or image can preserve a useful visual reference or sharing copy, but it is not a substitute for an editable VSDX package. Microsoft explains the available graphic export options in Save a Visio diagram as a graphic or image file.
Use a pilot to check the destination tool
Test copies before planning a full migration. Select ordinary diagrams as well as files that use less common features your team relies on. For each pilot file, note a baseline you can compare against: page count, key labels and shapes, connector paths, links, data, effects, and embedded images. This sample-based approach helps expose exceptions without assuming that one successful file represents the whole collection.

- Choose the import route. If ongoing editing is required, use the destination’s native import path. If the goal is a fixed visual copy, export a PDF or image for reference.
- Import a copy. Keep the source untouched so that you can compare it and recover from unwanted changes.
- Compare every page. Check text, specialized shapes, connectors, fonts, fills, effects, and embedded images against the source or a reference export.
- Test behavior separately. Follow important hyperlinks, check whether shape or connected data remains available, and verify any interactive behavior used in the workflow.
- Check editability. Make a small, representative edit in the destination and confirm that the objects and relationships needed for future work remain usable.
- Record exceptions and effort. Note what changed, what needs repair, and the work required to address it.
What a successful VSDX import does—and does not—show
Diagrams.net (draw.io) provides a concrete example of why an import that completes is not the same as a verified conversion. Its documentation lists VSDX as an importable format, while its separate caveats page says that visual or interactive differences can occur because the formats and rendering environments differ. It also states that embedded EMF images in VSDX diagrams are not imported. These are draw.io-specific documented limitations, not a claim about every destination.

If your files contain EMF images or rely on interactions, include those cases in the pilot rather than inferring their behavior from the import list alone.

Check compatibility warnings in their proper context
Microsoft’s Compatibility Checker identifies features that may not save or may look different when a diagram is saved in an earlier Visio format. That can help when preparing a backward-compatible Visio copy. It does not certify how a third-party tool will import or render the file. Microsoft explains the checker’s context in Compatibility between different versions of Visio.
Compare candidate tools on the same criteria
Use the same representative files and checks for each destination. Focus on the requirements that affect your workflows, rather than treating a supported extension as a complete measure of compatibility.

- Which Visio extensions can it import?
- Does import create editable native objects or mainly a visual representation?
- Are pages, shape and connector layout, text, fonts, fills, and effects retained well enough?
- How are embedded images handled, especially EMF images where present?
- Do hyperlinks, metadata, shape data, and connected data remain available?
- Does interactive behavior work as needed?
- Can the tool handle the diagrams’ page structure?
- Does its storage and collaboration workflow fit how the team works?
- How much repair effort do exceptions require?
The documentation cited here supports checking these dimensions, but does not establish a current, feature-by-feature ranking across diagramming tools. Base a choice on your own pilot results and documented requirements.

After the pilot, record a decision for each file rather than forcing one outcome across the entire collection. Migrate diagrams that meet the team’s editing and fidelity requirements. Rebuild files when important structure or behavior cannot be preserved acceptably. Retain an archival Visio copy when it remains necessary for future reference or editing, and keep a static PDF or image when a fixed visual record is sufficient. Repeat the pilot if the destination, import route, or mix of source files changes, since product capabilities and documentation can change.
