Do not treat the BPI-CM7 as a drop-in replacement for a Raspberry Pi Compute Module 4 (CM4). The modules both use two 100-pin board-to-board connectors, but they are different platforms with different SoCs, signal assignments, software stacks and product options. Before powering a reused carrier, identify the exact CM4 and BPI-CM7 SKUs, compare every routed signal with the target pinout, verify power and mechanical details, and plan a fresh software bring-up. A prototype on the documented BPI-CM7IO carrier is the safest way to expose incompatibilities before committing to a production board.
Why two 100-pin connectors do not make the modules compatible
A connector count describes only the number of contacts and does not establish what each contact does electrically. Raspberry Pi’s CM4 uses a Broadcom BCM2711, while Banana Pi’s BPI-CM7 uses an Allwinner H618. Their power rails, boot signals, peripheral assignments and software support are therefore not interchangeable by assumption.
Even inside Raspberry Pi’s own product family, physical carrier compatibility can hide signal changes. Raspberry Pi documentation notes that CM4 and CM5 carrier boards can be physically compatible while their connector signals are not pin-for-pin identical and some functions are assigned differently. That example is not a BPI-CM7 compatibility test; it is a warning to verify signals rather than relying on the outline or connector placement.

Never insert a BPI-CM7 into a CM4 carrier merely because the board-to-board connectors appear to mate.

Establish the exact source and target hardware
Record the complete configuration before comparing interfaces. A product family name is not enough because memory, storage, wireless and environmental options can change the design constraints.
Information to record from the existing CM4
- Exact CM4 model and revision.
- RAM capacity: the CM4 family is offered with 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB or 8 GB.
- Storage variant: Lite modules have no onboard eMMC; other variants have configured eMMC capacities.
- Wireless option, if fitted, and every antenna or radio connection on the carrier.
- Temperature grade, carrier revision, connector part number and mounting arrangement.
- All interfaces actually routed: USB, Ethernet, display, camera, GPIO, I2C, SPI, UART, PWM, audio, storage and recovery.
Information to confirm for the BPI-CM7
- The exact product SKU, because LPDDR4 and eMMC capacities vary by model.
- Whether the selected module includes the expected wireless hardware and antenna connection.
- The published 5 V input requirement and the target carrier’s rail generation.
- The BPI-CM7 connector pinout, including every power, ground, reset, boot, debug and peripheral signal used by the project.
- Required temperature range, mounting dimensions and any module-specific thermal guidance.
Do not infer a target capacity from a general BPI-CM7 description. Match the SKU on the vendor listing or product documentation to the memory and eMMC capacity required by the application.
Compare the platforms before comparing the pins
The following baseline comes from the manufacturers’ product documentation. These are specifications, not a performance benchmark, and the live specification pages do not state a publication year.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Characteristic | Raspberry Pi CM4 | Banana Pi BPI-CM7 |
|---|---|---|
| SoC | Broadcom BCM2711 | Allwinner H618 |
| CPU | Quad-core Arm Cortex-A72 at 1.5 GHz | Quad-core 64-bit Arm Cortex-A53 up to 1.5 GHz |
| GPU | Not stated in the cited CM4 summary | Arm Mali-G31 |
| Memory | 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB or 8 GB RAM options | Onboard LPDDR4; capacity depends on SKU |
| Onboard storage | Lite/no eMMC or configured eMMC options | Onboard eMMC; capacity depends on SKU |
| Wireless | Optional wireless variants | K019 Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0 are specified for the module |
| Networking | Depends on the CM4 carrier implementation | 10/100 Ethernet is listed |
| Module input | Use the CM4 and carrier power specifications | 5 V input is specified |
| Module connectors | Two 100-pin high-density connectors | Two 100-pin board-to-board connectors |
The similar CPU clock figure does not imply similar application performance. Cortex-A72 and Cortex-A53 are different cores, and memory, storage, GPU, operating-system support and thermal limits affect the result. Plan to measure the real workload rather than extrapolating from clock speed.

Perform a pin-by-pin electrical audit
Start with the schematic of the existing CM4 carrier, not a generic Raspberry Pi header diagram. For each signal that leaves the module, identify the CM4 connector contact, its voltage domain, direction, pull-up or pull-down network, termination, level shifter and connected peripheral. Then map that function to the BPI-CM7 pinout.
Check power and ground first
- Verify that the carrier supplies the BPI-CM7’s specified 5 V input at the required current and with acceptable ripple.
- Identify every ground contact used by the design and confirm the connector pinout places ground where the carrier expects it.
- Check the BPI-CM7’s published 3.3 V and 1.8 V outputs. Do not drive a signal into a domain whose voltage is not permitted by the target module.
- Review regulator sequencing, enable pins, reset timing, inrush current and power-good logic. A rail that is safe for CM4 can still be wrong for BPI-CM7.
Reconcile signal functions
- Compare GPIO numbers by physical connector pin and electrical function, never by familiar Raspberry Pi names.
- Map Ethernet, USB, HDMI, microSD, camera or display lanes, audio, I2C/TWI, SPI, UART and PWM individually.
- Check alternate-function multiplexing and whether a signal is reserved for boot, recovery or debug on the BPI-CM7.
- Review pull resistors and external voltage translators. A peripheral that is 1.8 V on one module may be 3.3 V on another.
- Trace reset, boot-selection, FEL or recovery controls and debug UART wiring. A misplaced strap can prevent boot or block recovery.
Document the result
Create a spreadsheet with columns for CM4 connector and pin, carrier net name, peripheral, voltage, direction, BPI-CM7 pin, target function, required circuit change and verification status. Mark unconnected, unsupported and uncertain signals explicitly. Do not power the target until every connected net has an intentional mapping or has been removed from the design.
Validate the carrier and mechanical design
Check more than connector placement. Confirm the board-to-board connector part, mating height, keying, keep-out zones, screw locations, module orientation and clearance for shields, antennas and heatsinks. The available documentation does not establish that a particular CM4 carrier is mechanically or electrically compatible with BPI-CM7; that is a project-specific check.
For initial work, Banana Pi documents the BPI-CM7IO as a carrier designed for BPI-CM7. It exposes USB-C 5 V input, USB 2.0 OTG, two USB Type-A ports, HDMI, 10/100 Ethernet, a microSD slot, a 40-pin GPIO header, a mini-PCIe-style socket using USB 2.0 with a SIM slot, UART debug, reset and FEL buttons, plus composite and stereo analog A/V. Use those interfaces to bring up the module and test software, but do not assume the board is a production substitute for a custom carrier.

Plan a new boot and software bring-up
The different SoCs mean that a CM4 boot image, bootloader configuration, kernel, device tree and peripheral drivers cannot be presumed portable. A familiar Linux distribution name does not guarantee that the same image or overlays will boot on BPI-CM7.
- Identify the target boot chain. Obtain the BPI-CM7-supported bootloader, firmware and operating-system image for the exact module SKU.
- Define storage provisioning. Decide whether development boots from microSD or eMMC, then document flashing, partitioning, first-boot configuration and recovery for that medium.
- Recreate hardware description. Build or obtain the correct device tree for GPIO controllers, buses, display, Ethernet, USB, wireless, storage and regulators. Remove CM4-specific overlays and addresses.
- Verify kernel and driver coverage. Confirm that the target kernel supports every required controller and that user-space APIs match the application.
- Test recovery before customization. Use the documented reset and FEL or equivalent recovery path, and keep a known-good image available.
- Port the application. Rebuild native dependencies, check GPIO and serial device names, validate timing assumptions and replace hardware-specific libraries where necessary.
Keep boot logs and a versioned device-tree and provisioning procedure. This turns a one-off prototype into a repeatable manufacturing and service process.
Inventory every peripheral and its software path
Make a requirements table before schematic changes. A signal appearing in the BPI-CM7 pinout proves that it is routed, not that the complete software stack or your chosen peripheral combination is supported.
| Project function | Hardware checks | Software checks |
|---|---|---|
| GPIO and interrupts | Voltage, pull state, wake behavior, alternate functions | GPIO controller, numbering, edge events and permissions |
| I2C/TWI and SPI | Bus voltage, speed, chip-select mapping and pull-ups | Controller driver, device-tree nodes and userspace API |
| UART | Pin mux, level shifting, console conflicts and flow control | Port naming, baud stability and debug-console configuration |
| USB | Host versus OTG role, power budget and connector wiring | Host controller, gadget mode and required device drivers |
| Display, camera and audio | Lane assignments, clocks, connectors and voltage domains | Display pipeline, camera stack, codecs and ALSA or equivalent support |
| Networking and wireless | Ethernet magnetics, antenna, SIM and RF clearances | MAC, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth firmware, regulatory settings and failover |
Use a controlled prototype sequence
Bring up the target in stages so a wiring fault is not confused with an operating-system problem.

- Exercise reset and recovery controls, then restore the image. Confirm that a failed update can be recovered without laboratory equipment.
- Test one interface at a time: USB, Ethernet, HDMI, storage, GPIO, I2C/TWI, SPI, UART, audio, wireless and any camera or display path the product needs.
- Attach the actual peripherals and run application-level tests, not just a kernel enumeration check.
- Measure sustained performance, boot reliability, power draw, temperatures and throttling with the production workload and enclosure conditions.
- Only after the prototype passes should you revise the custom carrier and repeat the same tests on that board.
No comparable independent benchmark establishes a universal speed increase, power saving or migration success rate. Your measurements must decide whether the BPI-CM7 meets the workload.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose between retaining CM4 and porting to BPI-CM7
| Decision axis | Keep the CM4 design | Port to BPI-CM7 |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical compatibility | Existing mapping remains the known baseline | Requires complete pin, rail and sequencing validation |
| I/O and bandwidth | Uses interfaces already proven in the product | Must match BPI-CM7 assignments and supported modes |
| Memory and storage | Choose among the CM4 project’s validated RAM and eMMC or Lite options | Select a BPI-CM7 SKU with sufficient LPDDR4 and eMMC |
| Software | Retains the established CM4 image and drivers | Requires target bootloader, kernel, device tree and driver validation |
| Performance and thermals | Existing measurements are directly relevant | Must be measured on the actual workload and enclosure |
| Supply and lifecycle | Follow the current CM4 sourcing and support plan | Recheck availability, certification, support and long-term supply for the new platform |
Choose migration only when the target’s verified I/O, software support, thermal envelope and supply plan outweigh the engineering cost of redesign and requalification.
Common failure modes and corrective actions
The module does not power on
Recheck 5 V polarity, current capability, ground contacts, enable sequencing, reset state and connector orientation. Remove all external peripherals and test the module on the documented carrier before investigating software.
The boot image starts but peripherals are missing
Inspect the device tree, pin multiplexing, clocks and regulator nodes. Confirm that the peripheral is physically routed to the selected BPI-CM7 pin and that the driver supports the target controller.

Only some GPIOs work
Look for pins reserved by boot, storage, wireless or debug functions. Replace CM4 numbering assumptions with the BPI-CM7’s physical pin and function mapping, then verify voltage levels.
Performance or stability is below expectations
Measure CPU frequency, thermal throttling, storage latency, memory pressure and power-rail behavior under the real workload. A similar advertised clock does not predict equal performance.
Recovery is impossible after a failed flash
Validate FEL or the documented recovery method before modifying the image, keep a known-good microSD or eMMC procedure, and expose reset and debug access on the production design.
