TidyOS is a Windows 11 utility for removing preinstalled apps and changing selected default settings, but its releases page says it has been replaced by CrapFixer. Check the project’s current release information before downloading or following an older TidyOS guide. If you already have TidyOS, treat the controls on your installed version—not a generic set of click-by-click instructions—as authoritative, and review each change before applying it.
What TidyOS does—and what it does not promise
The TidyOS project repository describes a live-system Windows 11 customization utility. It is intended to reduce preinstalled apps, telemetry, and unwanted default settings, and includes a plugin engine for PowerShell scripts and native JSON plugins. It is not described as a tool for building a custom Windows installation image.
Those are categories of changes, not a guarantee that every option is available in every release or appropriate for every PC. The project sources do not provide a measured TidyOS improvement in boot time, general performance, privacy, or storage. Use it to make specific changes you have reviewed, not on the assumption that debloating will produce a particular speed gain.

The TidyOS releases page states: “This app has been replaced by the new CrapFixer. Check it out here.” It lists version 0.62, but the release page’s displayed date does not establish a year clearly enough to treat it as a reliable current-release date.

Because the project itself identifies a replacement, TidyOS download and interface guidance may be stale. Check the releases page before obtaining a build. This guide covers the cautious use of an existing TidyOS installation; it does not assert that its menus match the replacement or provide verified installation steps for either application.
Prepare Windows before changing apps or settings
Keep an independent copy of important files
Back up important files separately before making system-level changes. Windows recovery can undo later changes, but it is not a substitute for an independent file copy.

Check recovery access
Windows point-in-time restore may require your BitLocker recovery key. Make sure you can access that key if BitLocker applies to your device. Microsoft also warns that restoring can roll back security updates, which may need to be reinstalled afterward.
Know whether a restore point is available
Windows recovery settings are separate from TidyOS; the TidyOS overview does not establish that the app creates a restore point automatically. Microsoft’s point-in-time restore documentation, last updated June 23, 2026, says restore points are captured locally, have an approximate default interval of 24 hours, and are retained for up to 72 hours. Default availability depends on device edition and management: it is on by default for qualifying unmanaged Home and Pro devices, off on enterprise-managed devices until Windows 11 version 26H2, and on by default only for devices with an OS volume of at least 200 GB.

Use TidyOS cautiously on an existing installation
- Open the version you already have and inspect its available options. The documented project description does not establish a current, verified click-by-click interface, so do not assume instructions for another release—or for its replacement—match your screen.
- Read each proposed change before selecting it. Identify the app, setting, or behavior affected. Keep anything you rely on, including apps or functions required by your work, device, or accessibility setup.
- Apply only changes you understand. Make a small, deliberate set rather than selecting every available tweak at once. This makes it easier to identify what changed if something you use stops working.
- Respond to permission prompts individually. The repository says normal use does not require elevation, although an individual tweak may request higher permissions. Do not launch the whole utility as administrator by default; assess the specific prompt and action.
- Check the result in Windows. Confirm that the app or setting changed as intended and that the functions you depend on still work. The project sources do not establish that a universal set of removals benefits every system.
What to expect if you need to undo a change
Windows point-in-time restore returns the system drive to an earlier state. Microsoft says this can revert files, applications, settings, and passwords changed after the selected restore point; a BitLocker recovery key is needed when applicable, and recent security updates may need to be reinstalled. See Microsoft’s point-in-time restore support guidance before relying on it.
Point-in-time restore and System Restore are not interchangeable. Microsoft describes point-in-time restore as covering the full system state, with points retained for up to 72 hours; System Restore targets system files and settings, with retention subject to disk space. Availability and configuration depend on Windows settings and device management. Neither option removes the need to keep a separate copy of important files.
