Before leaving T-Mobile, determine whether you are canceling one line, closing the entire account, transferring responsibility, or moving a phone number to another carrier. Those choices change when device payments are due, whether promotional credits continue, how your final bill is calculated, and what account data is deleted. Make a written inventory first, let a new carrier complete any number transfer before you cancel, and keep your T-Mobile account open until the final bill and any credit are resolved.
Start by deciding what you are actually ending
T-Mobile treats a single-line cancellation differently from a complete account cancellation. A number port can also deactivate a line without removing its equipment financing. Write down which of these outcomes you want before contacting support or authorizing a transfer.

List every line and device
- Record the phone number, user, device, and whether the line will stay, be canceled, or be transferred.
- For each phone, tablet, watch, hotspot, or other financed device, note the remaining Equipment Installment Plan balance and the monthly payment.
- Identify free-line offers, bill credits, trade-in credits, and discounts attached to a particular line or device.
- Note your billing-cycle dates, saved payment method, AutoPay setting, paperless-billing address, and any account credit or security deposit.
Download or save statements, promotion details, payment records, and correspondence while you can sign in. This gives you a reference if the final bill does not match your expectations.

Understand what happens to device payments
If you cancel one line but keep the account
T-Mobile says payments for a device tied to a canceled line continue to bill monthly when other lines remain active. The line can be inactive while its installment obligation continues, so budget for those charges after the service change. Ask support to confirm the exact remaining balance and payment schedule for each affected device.
If you close the entire account
When the whole account is canceled, T-Mobile says any remaining device balances become due on the final bill. The amount can include several installment plans, so adding each balance before cancellation helps you anticipate the bill. Keep enough funds available in the saved payment method or another accepted method for that payoff.
If you are transferring responsibility
An account or line transfer is not the same as cancellation. Check the receiving owner’s eligibility, which services and balances move, and whether the original promotion permits a transfer. T-Mobile’s ownership-transfer page says recurring device credits require the associated line and Equipment Installment Plan to remain active, subject to the specific offer’s conditions. Obtain confirmation of what happens to the installment balance and credits before approving the transfer.

Promotions are tied to their written terms, not merely to the phone. Canceling a line can stop its recurring device credits, remove a free-line benefit, change a multi-line discount, or make a plan ineligible if it requires a minimum number of active lines. A line cancellation may therefore raise the cost of the lines you keep even when their own devices are paid off.

- Find the promotion name or offer identifier on your bill, order confirmation, or account details.
- Check whether the credit requires the original line, device, installment plan, trade-in condition, or a minimum number of lines to remain active.
- Ask which credits have already posted and which future credits would be lost after cancellation, porting, or transfer.
- Request the answer in writing or retain a transcript so you can compare it with the final bill.
T-Mobile’s ownership-transfer guidance confirms that recurring device credits generally depend on keeping both the associated line and Equipment Installment Plan active, but your particular offer can add conditions. Treat a credit as unconfirmed until the promotion terms and your account record agree.
Move your number in the right order
For a personal postpaid account, the safest sequence is to have the new carrier initiate the transfer while your T-Mobile service is still active. Do not cancel the account first: cancellation can prevent the number from transferring and can trigger device payoff or loss of credits.
- Choose the line to transfer. Verify that the number, account holder, and device you give the new carrier match T-Mobile’s records.
- Get the T-Mobile account number. The new carrier needs it to submit the transfer request.
- Generate a Temporary Port Out PIN. T-Mobile requires the primary account holder to create this security credential for a personal postpaid transfer. The current generation process can change, so use the instructions in T-Mobile’s number-transfer support page when you are ready.
- Turn off Port Out Protection if it is enabled. Leave it enabled until you are ready to authorize the move; then disable it so the new carrier can complete the request.
- Give the account number and Temporary Port Out PIN to the new carrier. Let that carrier start and manage the port request.
- Wait for completion. Test calls, text messages, and data on the new service before making any separate cancellation request.
T-Mobile states that a line is deactivated when the port completes, while charges continue through the current billing cycle under its policy. That means a successful port does not necessarily end billing on the day the transfer finishes.

Check the billing-cycle cutoff
T-Mobile’s cancellation guidance says service generally remains billable through the end of the current billing cycle. Compare the cancellation or port date with the cycle dates printed on your bill. A port can deactivate service immediately when it completes, but the billing treatment still follows the stated cycle policy.

Expect several kinds of final charges
- Remaining Equipment Installment Plan balances when the entire account closes.
- Regular service charges through the applicable billing-cycle end.
- Taxes, regulatory charges, international or premium usage, and other charges that posted after the previous statement.
- Non-return charges for equipment that T-Mobile requires back.
Review the final statement line by line rather than relying on the amount shown during a cancellation call. Compare every device payoff, recurring credit, discount, and charge with the inventory you made earlier.
Handle AutoPay and paperless billing deliberately
T-Mobile says the final bill continues through its normal billing method. AutoPay may still charge the saved payment method unless you remove it before the final payment processes. Removing a payment method too early can create a missed balance, so first determine the expected final amount, keep an approved payment option available, and monitor the account until the last payment posts. Save the final electronic statement and any paperless-billing notification before access ends.
Save data and disconnect linked devices
Export information that will be deleted
T-Mobile says voicemail messages and DIGITS call history are permanently deleted after cancellation and cannot be recovered. Save important voicemail audio, transcriptions, contact details, and call records before the line or account is closed. If you use another T-Mobile service that stores content under the account, check its export or download options while the account remains active.

T-Mobile recommends unpairing a smartwatch line before cancellation. Remove the cellular plan from the watch according to the device maker’s instructions, then confirm that the watch is no longer tied to the T-Mobile line. Check tablets, hotspots, vehicle connections, and authentication services that may still send codes to the number you are moving.

Return Home Internet equipment separately
Home Internet equipment follows a different return rule from mobile phones. T-Mobile’s cancellation page says its gateway and mesh Wi-Fi extender must be returned within 14 days after cancellation. It also warns of a possible non-return fee of up to $370 plus tax. Keep the shipping receipt and tracking number until the return is marked received and the final bill shows no equipment charge. Do not apply this 14-day rule to a phone or other device unless T-Mobile specifically gives you that instruction.
Check credits, deposits, and refunds after cancellation
A security deposit or existing account credit can reduce the final balance. If the account owes you money, T-Mobile’s cancellation guidance says a credit balance remaining 30 days after the final bill may be refunded automatically. Its separate adjustments and refunds guidance describes a canceled account needing at least 30 days with no payment or charge activity before a credit-balance refund. Read both conditions together: avoid making new payments or generating new charges, allow the required period to pass, and verify the actual final statement.
- Confirm that every charge and device payoff has posted.
- Check whether a deposit or credit was applied to the final balance.
- Record the remaining credit, if any, and the refund method shown by T-Mobile.
- Watch the former payment account for the refund and keep statements until it arrives.
- Contact T-Mobile if the account shows a credit after the stated waiting period but no refund has appeared.
Use a transfer instead of cancellation when it fits
If another person will keep the service, transferring responsibility may avoid closing lines and losing numbers. Compare the transfer with cancellation on four points: whether other lines remain, who becomes responsible for the Equipment Installment Plan, whether the promotion permits credits to continue, and whether a number must be ported. The correct choice depends on the account and offer; neither path is universally cheaper or simpler.
Before authorizing a transfer, have both parties confirm the receiving account, services moving, unpaid balances, installment obligations, and promotion treatment. Keep copies of the approval and the last statement from the original account.

Troubleshoot common departure problems
The new carrier says the port is blocked
Verify the account number, regenerate the Temporary Port Out PIN through the primary account holder, and check whether Port Out Protection is still active. Ask the new carrier to resubmit the request only after those details match. Do not cancel T-Mobile while the port is unresolved.
A promised device credit disappears
Compare the bill with the promotion’s line, installment-plan, and minimum-line requirements. A canceled or transferred line may no longer qualify. Ask T-Mobile to identify the exact offer condition that changed and keep the bill showing the last credit for your records.
The final bill is higher than expected
Separate service charges, accelerated device balances, lost discounts, taxes, usage, and equipment fees. Check whether a Home Internet gateway or extender was returned within the required period. Use your pre-cancellation inventory and saved statements to challenge a specific line item rather than disputing the total without documentation.
You still see a balance after paying off a device
Allow the payoff to post, then review the next statement for residual service charges, taxes, or another installment plan on the account. A number transfer does not itself settle unrelated device financing.
Final departure checklist
- Choose line cancellation, full-account cancellation, transfer of responsibility, or number porting.
- Record every line, device, installment balance, promotion, discount, billing date, and account credit.
- Confirm which future device credits and multi-line benefits survive the change.
- For a personal postpaid port, obtain the account number and Temporary Port Out PIN from the primary account holder.
- Disable Port Out Protection only when the new carrier is ready to submit the transfer.
- Let the new carrier complete the port before canceling anything else.
- Save voicemail, DIGITS history, statements, promotion records, and payment confirmations.
- Unpair smartwatch lines and check other connected devices.
- Return Home Internet gateway and mesh equipment within 14 days and retain tracking proof.
- Read the final bill, verify device payoffs and credits, and monitor any refund after the required waiting period.
These steps follow T-Mobile’s published U.S. support guidance, but the terms on your specific promotion, installment plan, account type, and billing statement control the amount you ultimately owe or receive.
