Before investing in a jewellery-sector stock, establish exactly how the company makes money, test demand in both units and currency value, understand its exposure to gold and other materials, and reconcile profit with inventory and cash flow. Then compare its margins, working capital, debt, retail productivity, geography and regulatory risks with genuinely comparable companies. Global gold-jewellery data show why a simple “gold prices up” thesis is inadequate: in Q2 2026, demand fell 17% by weight even as the value of demand remained resilient.
Why jewellery stocks require a different checklist
A listed jewellery business may be a branded retailer, a multi-brand chain, a manufacturer, a wholesaler, an e-commerce operator or a mixture of these. It may sell fine jewellery, watches, fashion pieces, bullion-like products, repairs and other services. Those activities have different margins, inventory cycles and sensitivity to metal prices. A pure-play retailer should not be valued or compared mechanically with a company whose revenue is mostly manufacturing, wholesale or non-jewellery products.
The sector also reports two different versions of demand. Customers can buy fewer grams of gold but spend more money because the metal is expensive. Conversely, a company can report higher sales value while unit volumes, store traffic or product weights deteriorate. Your first task is therefore to separate physical demand, transaction activity and monetary revenue.

Map products and revenue streams
- Separate fine jewellery from watches, fashion jewellery, bullion-like products, repairs and services.
- Identify the share of sales made from gold, diamonds and other materials, and record average selling price where disclosed.
- Split branded and unbranded products. Branded goods can support pricing power, while unbranded goods may compete more directly on metal content and price.
- Break out retail, wholesale, manufacturing and e-commerce revenue. Include franchise or concession activity if the issuer reports it.
- Identify customer segments, such as bridal, gifting, luxury, everyday wear and investment-oriented buyers.
Read the latest annual report and interim filing rather than relying on a company description in a trading app. Note whether acquisitions or disposals changed the mix, because a reported growth rate can otherwise combine unlike businesses.

Read jewellery demand in both weight and money
World Gold Council data illustrate the distinction. Its Q1 2026 report recorded global gold-jewellery demand of 299.7 tonnes, down 23% year over year, while demand value reached US$47 billion, up 31%. In Q2 2026, demand was 278.2 tonnes, down 17% year over year. For the first half of 2026, demand value rose 22% year over year to US$86 billion. These are global gold-jewellery indicators, not forecasts for a particular listed company and not measures of every jewellery category.
| Period | Physical demand | Value | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 2026 | 299.7 tonnes, down 23% year over year | US$47 billion, up 31% | Higher prices lifted spending despite materially lower weight. |
| Q2 2026 | 278.2 tonnes, down 17% year over year | Quarterly value not stated in the cited update | Weight demand weakened as elevated prices affected affordability. |
| H1 2026 | Quarterly tonnage figures above | US$86 billion, up 22% year over year | Consumers spent more in aggregate while buying less fine weight. |
The World Gold Council expects elevated prices to continue weighing on jewellery tonnage through the remainder of 2026. Its review also describes customers adapting by trading down in carat or weight, deferring purchases, exchanging old jewellery and moving toward lower-premium investment products. Check whether the company you are studying sees the same behaviour in its markets, rather than applying a global statistic directly to its revenue forecast.
Questions that reveal demand quality
- Are comparable-store sales driven by more transactions, higher average tickets or both?
- Are customers buying lighter pieces, lower carat products or alternative materials?
- Does the company disclose unit, weight, transaction-count or average-selling-price trends?
- Are exchanges, upgrades and old-gold purchases generating repeat visits but reducing new-metal demand?
- Is growth coming from established stores, newly opened locations, acquisitions or currency translation?
Understand how gold and other material prices flow through the business
A higher gold price is neither automatically positive nor negative. It can increase the selling price of existing inventory, raise the ticket size and inflate reported revenue. It can also make jewellery less affordable, reduce weight sold, increase the cash tied up in stock and expose a retailer to markdowns if prices reverse. The direction and size of the effect depend on pricing speed, product design, sourcing, inventory turnover and hedging.

- Find out how often the company reprices products when metal prices move.
- Compare the change in average selling price with the change in units or weight sold.
- Check whether supplier contracts pass metal-price changes through immediately or with a delay.
- Review whether customers pay for craftsmanship and brand, or mostly for metal content. Higher premiums can cushion raw-material volatility but may reduce price-sensitive demand.
- Examine the treatment of diamonds, gemstones, watches and other inputs separately; gold-price analysis does not explain those categories.
Inspect hedging disclosures
Look for the instruments used, the proportion of expected exposure covered, contract maturities, counterparties, collateral or margin requirements, accounting treatment and the residual unhedged position. A precious-metals company’s SEC filing describes using forward and futures contracts to hedge inventory exposure. That filing is a useful example of the disclosures to seek, not evidence that every jewellery issuer hedges in the same way. Hedging can reduce short-term price risk while creating counterparty, liquidity and accounting risks.

Test margins over several reporting periods
Review gross margin, operating margin and, where available, margin by channel or product category over at least several annual and interim periods. A one-quarter margin increase may reflect a favourable product mix, a temporary metal-price movement, a currency effect or an inventory accounting adjustment rather than durable pricing power.
Explain each margin change with operating evidence:
- Product mix: a larger share of premium branded goods can lift margin even if volume is flat.
- Promotions and markdowns: discounting may protect units but destroy gross profit.
- Metal cost and pricing lag: costs can rise before ticket prices are reset.
- Channel mix: wholesale and e-commerce can carry different fulfilment and return costs from stores.
- Hedge accounting: reported cost of sales may not move in step with spot prices.
Use the issuer’s own definitions for adjusted measures. Reconcile adjusted operating profit with statutory profit and cash from operations so that exclusions do not obscure recurring costs.
Stress-test inventory and working capital
Inventory is often the largest operational asset in a jewellery company. The balance can rise because of expansion, higher metal prices, slower sales, seasonal buying or a deliberate increase in assortment. Compare inventory growth with sales growth, units sold and gross margin rather than treating a larger stock balance as evidence of expansion.

Metrics to calculate
- Inventory turnover: cost of sales divided by average inventory. Track the trend and compare only with businesses using similar accounting and product mixes.
- Days inventory outstanding: inventory divided by cost of sales, multiplied by the number of days in the period.
- Inventory-to-sales growth: compare the percentage change in inventory with the percentage change in revenue.
- Operating cash conversion: compare cash from operations with operating profit and net income across several years.
Look for quality and funding risks
Read disclosures on ageing, obsolete or slow-moving stock, markdown reserves, scrap and exchange practices, and the treatment of customer returns. Ask whether supplier credit, customer advances or borrowing facilities fund the stock. A falling metal price can reduce the value of inventory held at higher cost; slow sales can then force markdowns or additional working-capital borrowing. Accounting profit cannot establish liquidity by itself.
Evaluate retail execution without accepting vague same-store claims
For store-based businesses, examine comparable sales, sales per square metre or per store where reported, conversion, average transaction value, online growth, returns, customer acquisition costs, store openings and closures. Separate established-store performance from the contribution of new locations.
Read the exact comparable-sales definition. Signet’s fiscal 2026 annual report, for example, excludes stores until they reach their 12-month anniversary. Other issuers may use different anniversary periods, exclude relocations or acquisitions, or report constant-currency figures. Calendar and fiscal-year differences can make two apparently similar percentages incomparable.
Digital growth also needs context. Determine whether online sales are incremental, replacing store purchases, or carrying higher fulfilment and return costs. A rising digital percentage is not automatically an improvement in profit or customer retention.

Check balance-sheet resilience and capital allocation
Review net debt, lease liabilities, revolving facilities, interest expense, covenant headroom, maturities and unrestricted cash. Jewellery companies can need additional funding when inventory rises with metal prices or when they open stores ahead of demand.
- Compare cash from operations with capital expenditure over several years.
- Separate maintenance store investment from growth investment.
- Check whether dividends and repurchases are funded by recurring cash or by new borrowing.
- Review acquisitions for purchase-price allocations, goodwill and integration costs.
- Identify share issuance that may dilute per-share growth.
Test a downside case in which sales slow, inventory days increase, gross margin contracts and interest rates remain high. The objective is not to predict a precise outcome, but to see whether the company can meet obligations without an emergency equity raise or forced inventory liquidation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Map geography, currency and regulation
Record revenue, stores, sourcing, manufacturing and suppliers by country. Currency movements can change translated sales and costs, while import duties, taxes and political disruptions can affect landed margins. A company sourcing in one currency and selling in another may have an economic exposure that is not obvious from its reporting currency.

Compare companies on like-for-like axes
| Axis | What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Demand and customer | Customer segment, transaction growth, average ticket and weight or unit trends | Distinguishes genuine volume growth from price inflation or mix. |
| Product and metal mix | Gold, diamonds, watches, fashion items; branded versus unbranded | Determines margin, price sensitivity and inventory risk. |
| Geography | Revenue, stores, currencies and sourcing by country | Shows exposure to exchange rates, duties and local demand. |
| Retail execution | Comparable-sales definition, productivity, online economics and closures | Prevents false comparisons between mature and expanding networks. |
| Margin model | Gross margin, pricing cadence, promotions and hedge coverage | Reveals how metal and input volatility reaches earnings. |
| Working capital | Inventory turnover, ageing, payables, customer advances and cash conversion | Shows how much growth consumes funding. |
| Financial strength | Net debt, leases, interest coverage, liquidity and maturities | Measures resilience during weak demand or price reversals. |
| Store and brand economics | New-store returns, digital acquisition costs and brand investment | Separates structural advantages from temporary marketing spend. |
Keep structural differences separate from management execution. A wholesaler may have lower gross margin but faster inventory turns than a luxury retailer; that is not automatically inferior performance.
A repeatable due-diligence workflow
- Collect primary documents: download the latest annual report, interim filing, earnings presentation and risk-factor disclosures for each issuer.
- Build a business map: record products, channels, countries, customer segments and the percentage of revenue from each.
- Create a demand bridge: list comparable sales, transactions, average ticket, unit or weight data, currency effects and acquisitions.
- Explain margin movements: tie each major change to mix, pricing, promotions, metal costs, hedges or one-off items.
- Model working capital: calculate turnover and days, then test slower sales, lower prices and tighter supplier credit.
- Check liquidity: map cash, facilities, lease obligations, maturities, covenants and committed capital expenditure.
- Verify local risks: review hallmarking, import, consumer-protection and tax rules for every material market.
- Write an investment thesis with disconfirming evidence: state what must remain true, which indicators would invalidate the thesis and when you will review the filings again.
Warning signs that merit a closer look
- Revenue rises while transactions, units or weight sold fall and management gives no clear mix explanation.
- Inventory grows much faster than sales, ageing increases or markdown reserves remain unchanged.
- Operating profit improves but operating cash flow repeatedly lags because working capital absorbs cash.
- Comparable-sales growth changes after a definition change or cannot be reconciled with reported revenue.
- Hedge coverage, collateral, counterparties or residual exposure are material but poorly described.
- Debt, leases or supplier financing increase while dividends and buybacks continue.
- Management reports global demand statistics as if they were forecasts for its own markets.
- Country, sourcing or regulatory concentration is difficult to identify from the filing.
What a defensible decision looks like
A defensible jewellery-stock decision links customer behaviour to the company’s specific economics. You should be able to explain whether sales growth comes from more customers, higher prices, heavier products, a richer mix or acquisitions; how metal-price changes affect inventory and margin; how quickly stock becomes cash; and whether the balance sheet can withstand a demand or price shock.
Global gold-jewellery figures provide context, but they do not replace issuer-level evidence. Use the latest filings for current numbers and definitions, compare only genuinely similar business models, and treat valuation and portfolio suitability as separate decisions from operational quality.
