Before installing a third-party Windows file manager, verify where the installer came from, who signed it, what Windows reports about its reputation, and what the app’s privacy policy and installer offer. Then scan the file, confirm that it supports your Windows edition and processor architecture, and install only after every warning has an explanation you can verify. A Microsoft Store listing or the developer’s genuine website is preferable to an advertisement, mirror, or repackaged download.
Why a file manager deserves the same scrutiny as any other desktop app
A file manager can read, rename, copy, move, delete, and sometimes synchronize large parts of your storage. Traditional Windows desktop programs may also have broad access to files without appearing in the operating system’s privacy-permission pages. That makes the installer’s provenance and the publisher’s identity important before the first launch, not just after something goes wrong.
Windows security features provide useful signals, but none is a complete safety certificate. Store distribution, a digital signature, a reputation check, or a clean antivirus scan can all support a decision while still leaving you responsible for confirming that the file is the one you intended to obtain.

Prefer a source you can independently verify
Microsoft recommends installing software from trusted sources, including the Microsoft Store. If the file manager is distributed from the developer’s website, type or use a known address to reach that site rather than following a search advertisement or a random download button. The product page should identify the actual developer and provide a support or privacy contact.

A search result can lead to an advertisement, a typo-squatted domain, a mirror, or a portal that wraps the original installer in its own download tool. Those pages may present several large “Download” buttons, unrelated utilities, browser extensions, or driver-update offers. Treat the first file you find as unverified until the site’s identity and relationship to the product are clear.
Check the page before downloading
- Read the domain name character by character and make sure it matches the developer you mean to use.
- Confirm that the page names the product, publisher, supported Windows versions, and a way to obtain help or read the privacy policy.
- Make sure the download is for Windows and for the architecture you use, such as 64-bit or ARM64, when the developer provides separate builds.
- Be suspicious when the download requires an unrelated “download manager” or includes offers for software you did not request.
Do not assume that a download is safe merely because it is easy to find or has many positive comments. Microsoft’s guidance is to use trusted sources; the additional identity checks above help you decide whether a source deserves that trust.
2. Verify the publisher and digital signature
What a signature tells you
Windows can display the publisher during installation, and a downloaded executable may expose digital-signature details in its file properties. The publisher should correspond to the developer you intended to visit. A valid signature helps identify who signed the file and can reveal later tampering, but it does not guarantee that the software is harmless or that the publisher’s practices suit you.

Inspect the signer name and whether Windows reports the signature as valid. Compare that name with the developer named on the official product page. A mismatch, an invalid signature, or a file that is unexpectedly unsigned is a reason to stop and obtain a fresh copy from a verified source.

Why SmartScreen can still warn about a signed app
SmartScreen considers both the publisher’s reputation and the file’s hash reputation. A newly released, correctly signed build can therefore produce an “unrecognized” warning simply because Microsoft has little reputation data for that exact file. The warning means the service cannot establish a sufficient reputation; it is not, by itself, a definitive malware verdict.
Microsoft’s guidance is explicit: “Users should proceed only after verifying the source.” In practice, verify the download page, signer, file name, and expected release before deciding what to do with a warning. Never treat the warning as an invitation to click Run anyway automatically.
Understand Smart App Control
Smart App Control uses cloud safety predictions and, when confidence is insufficient, checks whether an application has a valid signature. An unsigned or invalidly signed installer can be treated as untrusted and blocked. Smart App Control currently has no per-app bypass, so disabling the feature is not a normal installation step. SmartScreen and Smart App Control settings can also be controlled by an organization, meaning a work-managed computer may prevent you from overriding a warning.

3. Inspect and scan the installer before opening it
Confirm that the file is what you expected
Check the complete file name and extension before double-clicking. An installer offered as an executable should not arrive as an unrelated archive or script unless the developer’s instructions explain why. Be especially cautious with files whose names hide the extension or combine a familiar name with an unexpected second extension. Enable the display of file-name extensions in File Explorer if you need to inspect them accurately.

Scan with Microsoft Defender or your existing antivirus
Use Microsoft Defender Antivirus, or another reputable antivirus already installed on the computer, to scan the downloaded file before launching it. A clean result is useful evidence, not a guarantee: antivirus tools can miss new or heavily obfuscated threats, and a scan cannot tell you whether an app collects more data than you want.
Handle Mark of the Web and “blocked file” messages carefully
Windows can attach origin information, commonly called Mark of the Web, to files downloaded from the internet. That information may cause a warning or block when you try to open the installer. If Windows offers an Unblock option, use it only after verifying that the file came from the intended, trusted source. Unblocking a file changes how Windows treats its origin; it does not repair a bad download or prove that the program is safe.
4. Review privacy, permissions, and bundled offers
Read the developer’s privacy policy
Look for what data the file manager stores locally, what telemetry or diagnostics it sends, whether crash reports contain file paths, and how long information is retained. Also identify the contact or process for privacy questions. After installation, inspect the application’s own settings for analytics, update checks, cloud connections, thumbnail services, and similar features.

Do not rely on Windows privacy pages as a complete inventory. Microsoft notes that traditional desktop applications may not appear there, and those settings may not control a desktop program’s access to personal data. Ask whether each requested capability makes sense for the workflow you need, while recognizing that Windows may not present a comprehensive permission prompt.

Decline unrelated software
Read every installer screen instead of accepting the default path with repeated clicks. Clear checkboxes for optional utilities, browser extensions, search changes, “recommended” tools, or other offers you did not seek. Microsoft describes potentially unwanted apps as software that can display ads or offer unexpected applications. The presence of an optional offer does not prove that the file manager itself is malicious, but it is a reason to slow down and keep the installation limited to the program you chose.
5. Confirm Windows compatibility and support
Match the vendor’s requirements to your system
Before downloading, check the developer’s current requirements and update history. Confirm the supported Windows edition and version, processor architecture, minimum memory or storage requirements, and any dependencies such as a particular runtime. If the developer publishes separate x64, x86, or ARM64 packages, choose the package that matches your system rather than assuming the installer will select correctly.
Review release dates and support channels as well. A file manager that has not been updated for your Windows build may still install but fail around Explorer integration, network locations, archive handlers, or security controls. Compatibility claims are vendor-specific, so use the developer’s current documentation rather than assuming that one manager’s requirements apply to another.
Account for Windows 10’s support status
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That date matters when you evaluate an installer in 2026: do not describe Windows 10 as receiving standard free security fixes, and do not assume that a program tested on Windows 11 is supported on an unsupported Windows 10 installation. Record the exact Windows edition and build you are using, then compare it with the file manager’s stated support policy.

Check management and recovery constraints
On a work-managed computer, ask your IT department before installing software. Organization policy can alter SmartScreen behavior, block unsigned programs, restrict installation rights, or prevent users from bypassing warnings. Make sure you have a way to uninstall the manager and restore default file associations if the program changes them.

Do not choose on a signature or Store listing alone. Evaluate each candidate against the same verifiable criteria and consult its current documentation.

No single row proves that an application is safe. The comparison is useful because it exposes an unknown source, stale maintenance, unclear data practices, or a licence that does not fit your use before you invest time in setup.
7. A cautious installation procedure
- Record your system. Note the Windows edition, build, and processor architecture. If the computer is managed by an employer or school, confirm that installation is permitted.
- Choose the source. Use the Microsoft Store when the listing identifies the expected developer, or navigate directly to the developer’s genuine website. Avoid search ads, mirrors, and repackaged download portals.
- Download once. Save the installer to a known folder and compare its name and type with the developer’s instructions. Do not run a second copy simply because the first produced a warning.
- Inspect the signature. In the file’s properties, review the signer and signature status when available. Stop if the identity is unexpected or validation fails.
- Scan the file. Run Microsoft Defender Antivirus or your existing reputable antivirus against the installer before opening it.
- Investigate Windows warnings. Read the SmartScreen or Smart App Control message, recheck the source and publisher, and consult IT if policy prevents the action. Do not disable protections as a routine workaround.
- Run the installer deliberately. Read each screen, choose a custom option when it exposes optional components, and decline unrelated offers or changed defaults.
- Review the first-run settings. Open the manager’s privacy, telemetry, update, cloud, and integration settings. Keep only the connections and features you understand.
- Test and keep a rollback path. Confirm that your folders, network locations, file associations, and context-menu integrations behave as expected. Know where to uninstall the app and how to restore associations if necessary.
8. What to do when something looks wrong

Final go/no-go checklist
Install only when all of these statements are true:
- You can explain why the download source is genuine and not an ad, mirror, or repackaged portal.
- The publisher shown by Windows and the digital signature, when present, match the intended developer.
- Any SmartScreen or Smart App Control warning has been investigated rather than dismissed.
- The file type is expected, and an antivirus scan has completed.
- You have read enough of the privacy policy and settings to understand data handling and telemetry.
- Optional offers and unrelated components are disabled or absent.
- The developer’s requirements cover your Windows edition, build, and processor architecture.
- You have permission to install the software and a clear way to uninstall it or restore changed associations.
If one of these checks fails, postpone the installation and resolve the uncertainty instead of treating Run anyway or a disabled security feature as the solution.
