Before installing a Skyrim NPC overhaul, confirm your exact Skyrim edition and runtime, then audit the overhaul’s current mod page and your existing load order. The critical question is not simply whether two mods are “compatible”: it is which plugin record should win for each NPC and which mod should supply that NPC’s FaceGen mesh and textures. Conflicts can also remove AI, dialogue, packages, or other record edits. A deliberate conflict check and, when necessary, a compatibility patch are safer than placing every appearance mod at the bottom of the load order.
1. Identify your Skyrim edition and runtime first
Write down the edition you are actually running before downloading the overhaul. “Skyrim” can mean the original 32-bit release, Skyrim Special Edition, or Anniversary Edition content running on the Special Edition codebase. The installed runtime version matters as well, because a mod page may support one release but not another.
- Record the edition shown by your game and mod manager.
- Record the executable/runtime version, including the full number where your tools display it.
- Note whether you use a downgraded executable or a setup that combines newer Creation Club content with an older runtime.
- Keep this information beside the download page while checking requirements and patches.
Do not infer support from another NPC replacer. Requirements, optional files, compatibility notes, and patches can change between releases and can differ between editions. The specific overhaul’s current page is the authority for its supported game versions.
2. Audit the overhaul’s current mod page
Read the complete description, installation section, requirements list, optional-file list, and incompatibility notes. A download that contains only meshes and textures may still depend on a plugin, a shared asset, or a separate requirement. Conversely, an overhaul that looks similar to one you already use may have entirely different dependencies.

Save or bookmark the page version you installed. If the author lists an update, reread the compatibility section rather than assuming an older patch remains valid.
3. Find every mod that touches the same NPCs
Make an overlap list before enabling the overhaul. Start with the NPC names or form lists supplied by the overhaul, then search your installed mods for those characters. Appearance replacers are the obvious competitors, but they are not the only ones.
- Other appearance overhauls: These may provide a different head mesh, tint, hair, eyes, or complete FaceGen set for the same NPC.
- AI and package mods: New schedules, factions, combat styles, or sandbox packages are NPC record edits that can be overwritten by a later plugin.
- Dialogue and quest mods: These can add topics, voice data, factions, or quest aliases tied to the NPC.
- City, settlement, and population overhauls: They may edit residents, outfits, inventories, relationships, or locations at the same time as an appearance mod.
- Patch plugins: A patch that already resolves one conflict can itself be superseded if its order is ignored.
For each overlapping NPC, write down what you want to keep: the new face, an existing outfit, a behavior change, a dialogue addition, or some combination. This turns “compatible” into a concrete decision. If no other mod edits that NPC, the installation is simpler; if several do, plan a record-level resolution.
4. Understand why plugin records and FaceGen assets must agree
An NPC’s appearance is split between data in the plugin and files in the data directory. The plugin record contains the NPC’s configured traits and other fields. FaceGen supplies the generated head mesh and textures that the game displays. The final plugin record and the final FaceGen files must describe the same version of the character.

The Jampion NPCs – Male NPC Overhaul guide on Nexus Mods states: “The FaceGen data must match the changes defined in the .esp, otherwise you get a black face bug.” In practical terms, a plugin from one overhaul combined with FaceGen files from another can produce a dark or visibly incorrect face even though both mods are enabled.
Two priority systems therefore matter:
- Plugin order: Determines which NPC record wins when multiple plugins edit the same form.
- Asset overwrite order: Determines which mesh and texture files are present when several mods provide files with the same paths.
These priorities should tell one consistent story. If you want Overhaul A’s face for an NPC, its relevant plugin record and FaceGen assets should both win. If Overhaul B’s plugin wins while A’s files overwrite B’s FaceGen, the game can show a dark face or the wrong appearance.
5. Coordinate plugin and asset priority during installation
Use your mod manager’s conflict views instead of moving every appearance mod to the bottom. There is no universally correct load-order position: the right winner depends on the NPC and on which behavior or appearance you intend to preserve.

- Install prerequisites first. Add every required master or resource named on the overhaul’s page, then verify that the manager reports no missing dependency.
- Install the overhaul and only the optional files you need. Do not enable alternate variants until you know which one matches your edition and body, hair, or texture setup.
- Inspect plugin conflicts. In the manager’s plugin view, identify every enabled plugin that edits the same NPC forms. Record which plugin currently wins each relevant record.
- Inspect file conflicts. In the manager’s asset or file-conflict view, identify which mod supplies the NPC’s FaceGen mesh and textures. Confirm that this is the same appearance choice as the winning plugin.
- Set deliberate priorities. Adjust plugin order and mod/file overwrite order so the intended record and corresponding assets come from the same overhaul. Keep unrelated records from a behavior mod when a patch or a merged resolution is available.
- Install the author’s specific patch. Place it where its instructions require and check that it wins the records it was designed to resolve. A patch for a different release or a similarly named mod is not a substitute.
- Recheck after sorting. A general sorting tool can arrange dependencies, but it cannot decide whether you prefer one face, a different AI package, or newly added dialogue. Review the final conflicts yourself.
Do not assume that putting an appearance plugin last automatically fixes its files. Plugin order and asset overwrite order are separate, and either can leave a mismatch.

6. Preserve AI, dialogue, and other useful NPC edits
An appearance overhaul can win the entire NPC record and unintentionally erase changes you wanted from another mod. For example, the visual mod may carry the desired head data while a behavior mod adds packages or factions. If the visual plugin simply overwrites the other record, the NPC may look correct but stop performing the intended schedule or lose dialogue.
Search the overhaul page and the other mod’s page for a patch covering that exact combination. A useful patch forwards the appearance fields from the visual overhaul while retaining the AI, dialogue, packages, factions, inventory, or other records you need. Check the patch’s supported game version and both parent mod versions.
If no patch exists, inspect the conflicting fields in xEdit and make a deliberate conflict-resolution patch only if you understand which values should survive. Do not copy an entire NPC record blindly: doing so can reintroduce the same conflict or discard an unrelated change.
7. Inspect an uncertain conflict in xEdit
When the manager’s summary is ambiguous, inspect the actual NPC record before launching the game. The exact screen labels can vary by xEdit release, but the workflow is consistent.

- Load the plugins involved in the conflict and allow xEdit to finish its background loading.
- Find the affected NPC under the non-player character records and open the record’s conflict view.
- Compare each plugin column, especially head parts, hair, eyes, skin or tint data, factions, packages, dialogue-related fields, inventory, and other values the competing mod advertises.
- Identify the winning override for the appearance fields and separately note which plugin contributes behavior or dialogue you want to retain.
- Check the winning plugin’s FormID and the overhaul’s supplied FaceGen files. The record winner and asset winner should represent the same NPC version.
- If a patch is needed, create or install one that forwards the selected fields, then verify that the patch itself wins the intended conflict.
xEdit can show what conflicts; it cannot choose your preferred appearance or gameplay behavior. Make that choice explicitly and document it in your load-order notes.

Launch the game with the intended profile and visit several NPCs from the overhaul’s list, including characters that overlap with other mods. Check the face in normal lighting, indoors and outdoors, and confirm that expected schedules, dialogue, outfits, and quest interactions still work.
A dark or black face is a diagnostic clue, not proof that a separate cosmetic fix is missing. Common causes include:
- A different plugin wins the NPC record than the one you expected.
- The winning record and the FaceGen mesh or textures come from different overhauls.
- FaceGen files are missing, hidden, or overwritten by another mod.
- A patch is placed before the records it is meant to resolve, so another plugin supersedes it.
For an affected NPC, return to the record conflict view and the asset-conflict view. Confirm the winning plugin, locate the actual FaceGen files being loaded, and make their priorities agree. Then retest the NPC before changing unrelated parts of the load order.

The Face Discoloration Fix mod description warns: “if you have a conflict in your load order that breaks those mods, this mod will not be able to restore the intended appearance.” Its description lists an update for Skyrim Special Edition 1.6.629 and later; verify the current page before relying on that version statement. A discoloration fix can address a supported engine or rendering issue, but it is not a compatibility patch and cannot reconstruct an appearance that another plugin and another set of assets have split apart.
9. Compare several overhauls by conflict workload, not screenshots alone
If you are choosing between multiple NPC overhauls, compare how each one fits your existing profile. The practical criteria are the coverage and the work required to make overlaps consistent.

These criteria do not produce a universal “best” overhaul. They help you choose the combination you can maintain when a mod updates or your load order changes.
