Check the individual who will do the work, not only the company name. Before signing, verify relevant credentials and local licensing, inspect comparable projects, require an itemized proposal, confirm insurance, and put commissioning, training, warranties, support, change orders, payment and cancellation terms in writing. CEDIA certification can be a useful signal for integrated-system work, but it is neither a legal requirement nor a guarantee of perfect installation.
Start with what the installer is actually responsible for
A smart-home project can involve more than mounting devices. Depending on the brief, the installer may design the system, select compatible equipment, install wiring and hardware, configure scenes and automations, integrate the network, test the finished system, train household members and provide aftercare. CEDIA describes this broader role in its explainer on certified professionals: What does a CEDIA-certified smart home professional actually do?
Write down the outcome you want before interviewing companies. Include rooms, devices, lighting or climate controls, security or entertainment integrations, network work, remote access, user accounts, accessibility needs and any work that must be coordinated with an electrician, builder or other contractor. A clear brief lets every candidate price the same job and exposes proposals that omit essential work.

Check individual credentials
Ask which certifications the specific designer or technician assigned to your home personally holds and what each credential covers. Certifications are generally attached to people, not automatically to every employee of a company. CEDIA’s homeowner guidance explains how to find professionals and treats its credentials as one useful specialty signal for integrated systems: What to Ask a Smart Home Installer Before They Start. CEDIA also maintains a professional directory, but directory presence should be one part of your assessment rather than a substitute for checking the actual worker.

Ask for the credential name, issuing body, current status and the parts of your project it is relevant to. A certification focused on integration may not establish that the person is licensed for electrical work, structural work or another regulated trade in your area. Verify those requirements separately with the authority that regulates the work.
Match experience to your system
Request examples of completed projects that resemble yours in scale, building type and technology. Ask who designed and installed each example, what the installer personally contributed, and whether the system is still supported. Speak with references rather than relying only on photographs. Useful references can describe communication, cleanliness, testing, handover and how the company handled faults or changes after completion.
Confirm who will be on site: named employees, subcontractors or a mix. Ask who supervises subcontractors, who is responsible for damage and who remains your contact if the assigned technician becomes unavailable. A respected company with an inexperienced or unknown worker may be a poorer fit than a smaller provider whose assigned team has directly relevant experience.

Require a written, itemized proposal
Do not accept a verbal total or a single unexplained line called “smart-home installation.” CEDIA’s October 5, 2026 homeowner guide recommends a written quote covering equipment, costs, timeline and who will carry out the work. Request enough detail to compare proposals on identical scope.

| Proposal area | What should be specified |
|---|---|
| Design | Planning, drawings or diagrams, programming approach, network design and any design fee. |
| Equipment | Manufacturer and model, quantity, required hubs, licenses, subscriptions, accessories and approved alternatives. |
| Labor | Installation tasks, wiring, mounting, configuration, programming, network changes, cleanup and the workers or subcontractors responsible. |
| Testing and handover | Functional tests, integration tests, user accounts, documentation, training and sign-off criteria. |
| Schedule | Planned start, milestones, expected completion, delivery dependencies and disruption to rooms or services. |
| Exclusions | Builder, electrical, painting, internet-service, structural or other work not included. |
| Changes | How a change order is requested, priced and approved, and what happens when hidden conditions are discovered. |
Ask the installer to identify one-time charges separately from recurring monitoring, cloud, software or maintenance fees. The sources do not establish a universal project price or average cost, so a low headline number is meaningful only when the included work, equipment and continuing charges match another proposal.
Compare like with like
Give every candidate the same written brief and ask each to mark included, excluded and optional items. A proposal that appears cheaper may omit network upgrades, configuration, testing, documentation or training. Ask for a revised comparison when quantities, device models or labor assumptions differ; do not fill gaps with assumptions.
Confirm licenses, insurance and local consumer protections
Verify requirements where the work occurs
Licensing rules vary by country, state, province, county, municipality and type of work. Smart-home installation can overlap with electrical, low-voltage, structured-cabling, alarm or construction regulation. Ask which licenses are required for each task and request license numbers or other proof. Verify current status directly with the relevant local authority; a company registration or trade name is not proof that the person doing regulated work is authorized.
Ask for a current certificate of insurance and confirm the types and limits of coverage with the issuer or the method your local authority recommends. Clarify whether subcontractors carry their own coverage and who pays if installation causes property damage or an injury. Refusal to discuss insurance is a reason to pause.

Check contracts, deposits and cancellation rights
Read the complete contract, attachments and proposal together. For U.S. readers, the Federal Trade Commission advises checking licenses with state or county authorities, getting written estimates and contracts, asking for proof of insurance and avoiding full payment upfront. Its consumer guidance also describes a three-business-day cancellation right for some contracts signed at home or away from a seller’s permanent place of business: How To Avoid a Home Improvement Scam. That deadline does not automatically apply to every installation agreement. State and local rules, the place of signing and the type of transaction can change the result, so check the rules that govern your address and keep the required notice method and deadline in writing.
Have the contract state the deposit, progress-payment triggers, retention or final-payment conditions, taxes, delivery risk and what happens if equipment is delayed. A payment schedule tied to completed, testable milestones gives you more leverage than paying the entire amount before work begins.
Test the installer’s technical plan, not just the shopping list
Ask how devices will work together
Request a system diagram or plain-language explanation of hubs, networks, wireless coverage, control points and dependencies. Ask what happens when the internet is unavailable, a hub is replaced or a device is discontinued. Have the installer identify which functions are local and which rely on a cloud service, account or subscription. The goal is not to demand one architecture; it is to understand what can fail and how it will be recovered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDiscuss software terms and long-term ownership
Smart products combine hardware with software, accounts and service terms. The OECD’s Consumer Policy and the Smart Home report notes that licensing terms can affect repair, modification, peripherals and resale. Ask who owns administrator accounts, whether you can export configuration, and whether another professional can service the system. Ask what happens if a manufacturer ends a service, changes a license, stops security updates or withdraws compatibility. Get the answer, any subscription cost and the proposed replacement path in writing; do not assume all products have identical terms.

Protect access and privacy
Ask how installer access will be created, limited and removed after handover. Confirm that you receive the primary account credentials or an ownership transfer, that temporary accounts are deleted, and that documentation identifies devices without exposing unnecessary secrets. Ask what information the installer stores, who can access remote-support sessions and how you can revoke access. These questions are especially important when cameras, locks, alarms, microphones or presence sensors are included.
Specify commissioning, training and handover
“Installed” should not mean merely powered on. Define commissioning as a deliverable. The installer should test each device, the automations that connect devices, manual overrides, remote access, network recovery and the behavior you care about most. Ask for a written punch list and a process for resolving failed tests before final payment.
Require a handover package that includes an equipment schedule with model and location, network or system diagram, configuration backup where feasible, account ownership details, warranty documents, maintenance instructions, support contacts and any passwords transferred through a secure method. Ask for training for every household member who will operate the system, not just the person who attended the sales meeting. CEDIA’s guidance identifies documentation, training and aftercare as parts of professional service; make each one explicit in the contract.

Use a consistent scorecard for credible candidates
When two or more providers meet your basic checks, compare them against the same criteria. There is no universal industry scoring formula, so use a simple written record and preserve each candidate’s evidence.
| Criterion | Evidence to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Project match | Relevant individual credentials, similar completed projects and references. | Shows that the assigned worker has handled comparable complexity. |
| Scope completeness | Itemized design, equipment, labor, configuration, testing and handover. | Prevents an artificially low quote based on omissions. |
| People and responsibility | Named workers, subcontractors, supervisor and single support contact. | Clarifies accountability during installation and after handover. |
| Schedule and disruption | Milestones, dependencies, access needs and expected outages or room closures. | Lets you plan around delivery and household disruption. |
| Change control | Written approval process, rates and treatment of concealed conditions. | Reduces surprise charges and disputes. |
| Legal and insurance checks | Verified local licenses and current insurance evidence. | Confirms authorization and a path for covered losses. |
| Commissioning and handover | Test plan, documentation, training and acceptance criteria. | Turns a collection of devices into a usable system. |
| Aftercare and ownership | Warranty terms, support route, software changes, upgrades and recurring fees. | Shows what happens after the initial installation. |
| Total cost | Price for the same equipment and scope, plus recurring charges. | Enables a fair financial comparison. |
Keep notes from calls and ask candidates to correct discrepancies in writing. A polished presentation should not outweigh missing evidence, and a higher price may reflect a more complete scope rather than poor value.
Questions to ask before you sign
- Which certifications do you personally hold, and which parts of my project do they cover?
- Who will perform each task, including subcontracted electrical or network work?
- Can I see similar completed projects and speak with references for those projects?
- What exactly is included in design, equipment, labor, configuration, testing and handover?
- What is excluded, and how are changes or unexpected work approved and priced?
- Which licenses are required for this work at my address, and can you show current insurance?
- How will you test the complete system, and what happens if a test fails?
- What documentation, account transfer and training will I receive?
- Who handles support, software or configuration problems, repairs and future upgrades?
- What are the warranty terms, response times, service rates and recurring maintenance or monitoring charges?
- What happens if a device, cloud service or software support changes or ends?
- What are the payment schedule, cancellation terms and notice requirements?
Ask for written answers to questions that affect cost, ownership, access or future service. A sales promise that never appears in the proposal or contract is difficult to enforce.
Warning signs that justify a pause
- A vague quote, missing model numbers or no separation between equipment and labor.
- No examples or references from projects similar to yours.
- Pressure to sign immediately, unusual reluctance to let you compare proposals or a meaningful discount tied only to same-day acceptance.
- An unusually low estimate with no explanation of omitted equipment, labor, testing or support.
- Verbal-only promises about warranties, subscriptions, account ownership or future service.
- Unclear responsibility for subcontractors or an unwillingness to identify who will enter your home.
- No candid response about insurance, licenses, cancellation rights or change-order pricing.
- A recommendation that depends on one service without explaining its license, subscription or replacement risk.
These signs do not prove misconduct, but they weaken your ability to compare and recover when something goes wrong. Pause, request clarification in writing and obtain another proposal. The FTC offers additional U.S. scam-avoidance guidance for home security purchases, including written estimates, license checks and avoiding full payment upfront: How To Avoid Scams When You Shop for a Home Security System.
Final pre-signing checklist
- Write the desired outcomes, rooms, integrations and constraints.
- Identify the actual designer and installers; verify their relevant credentials and comparable references.
- Confirm every required local license and obtain current insurance evidence.
- Collect itemized proposals using the same brief and mark exclusions and recurring fees.
- Review the technical design, account ownership, software dependencies and replacement plan.
- Negotiate a written schedule, named workers, change-order method and payment milestones.
- Add commissioning tests, documentation, training, warranty, support and maintenance terms.
- Check local cancellation and consumer-protection rules, then sign only the complete contract and attachments.
If a candidate cannot answer these questions clearly before payment, the risk is unlikely to become smaller after installation begins. Choose the provider whose assigned people, scope, legal standing and aftercare are documented—not simply the one with the lowest initial number.
