Before paying for an online digital-skills program, define the job or measurable skill you want, verify that employers recognize the training, calculate the complete cost, and demand evidence for every completion or employment claim. Then confirm the teaching format, technology requirements, contract terms, and cancellation process in writing. A polished sales page is not proof that a course will lead to work.
This checklist is based on U.S. consumer and education guidance. Accreditation, licensing, refund rights, and disclosure rules can differ by state, occupation, provider, and student location, so verify current details with the relevant agencies and institutions.
1. Define the outcome before you compare schools
Start with an outcome you can test, not a vague promise to become “job ready.” Write down the role, freelance service, or specific skill you intend to use after training. For example, your target might be an entry-level help-desk role, a junior data-analytics portfolio, or preparation for a state-regulated license. The target determines what evidence a useful program must provide.

Check what the market actually asks for
Review current job postings for the role and note recurring requirements: software versions, portfolio pieces, years of experience, industry certifications, degrees, licenses, or demonstrated projects. Ask hiring managers or employers in that field which training they value. A provider’s advertisement is only one claim; employers and the requirements in real vacancies are a stronger test.

Separate a course certificate from a professional credential
A certificate of completion usually shows that you finished the provider’s lessons. It is not automatically a certification, degree, license, or credential recognized by an employer or regulator. If the role requires a particular exam, certification body, degree, or state license, verify that the curriculum prepares you for that exact requirement and that you remain eligible to take it.
2. Verify the provider and the credential
Use the Department of Education database when accreditation applies
For a college or other institution claiming accreditation, search the U.S. Department of Education’s accreditation database and check the accrediting agency’s recognition status. The Department of Education does not accredit schools itself; independent accrediting agencies perform that function. Save a copy of the listing and the program’s accreditation statement because names, campuses, and covered programs can differ.
Ask the institution or employer that will receive your credential
Accreditation alone does not guarantee that a digital-skills course is current, practical, or accepted for a particular job. Ask likely employers whether they recognize the named credential, and ask a target college whether it will accept any credits for transfer. Get the answer from the receiving organization rather than relying on a recruiter’s interpretation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCheck regulated occupations and state disclosures
If the advertised career is regulated, contact the relevant state licensing body. Confirm education hours, examinations, supervised experience, background checks, and any residency or location rules. Request the provider’s state-specific disclosures in writing. A program that qualifies students in one state may not satisfy another state’s requirements.

3. Calculate the total cost in writing
Ask for an itemized price before enrolling. The advertised tuition may cover only lessons, while the actual outlay includes equipment, software, exams, financing charges, or cancellation fees. Require the provider to identify whether each amount is one-time, recurring, optional, or conditional.
| Cost category | Questions to put in writing |
|---|---|
| Tuition and enrollment | Is the price for one course, a term, or the entire program? Are registration or technology fees added? |
| Books, equipment, and supplies | Which computer, operating system, peripherals, books, or other materials must you buy, and what does the provider supply? |
| Software and subscriptions | Are licenses included for the full study period, or do you pay monthly after a trial? |
| Exams, licenses, and graduation | Are certification exams, state licensing fees, proctoring, transcripts, or graduation charges included? |
| Financing | What is the total repayment, interest rate, payment schedule, late-fee policy, and effect of withdrawing? |
| Cancellation or withdrawal | What is the refund deadline, how is a refund calculated, and are administrative or collection charges imposed? |
Compare routes by total cost, not headline tuition
Put the provider’s complete figure beside realistic alternatives such as community-college courses, public workforce programs, apprenticeships, employer-sponsored training, or self-study paired with an industry exam. A lower advertised tuition can become the more expensive route after equipment, software, financing, and required exams are added. Keep the written quote and all fee schedules with the contract.
4. Test completion and job-outcome claims
Demand definitions, cohorts, and dates
Ask for the completion rate, job-placement rate, measurement period, cohort definition, and number of graduates included. “Placed” should be explained: does it mean any job, a job in the trained field, an internship, or continued employment? Ask whether graduates who already had jobs are counted and whether temporary, part-time, or self-employed work is included.
Request salary evidence that matches the same group
If a provider advertises salaries, request the source, cohort, geography, employment timeframe, and whether the figure is a median, average, starting wage, or highest reported result. A salary from a small or unusually successful subset should not be treated as the normal result for every student. Compare claims with independent public data when such data exists.
Understand why verification matters
In March 2025, the Federal Trade Commission said it was sending 42,794 payments totaling more than $15.5 million to people who paid for Career Step’s online training programs, following allegations involving job-placement, externship, and hiring-partnership claims. This enforcement action is a specific case, not proof that every provider misleads students; it demonstrates why outcome definitions and supporting records matter.

The FTC’s vocational-program guidance states: “No school can guarantee you a job when you graduate.” Treat a guarantee, a vague hiring-partner logo, or an unusually precise salary promise as a reason to request documentation, not as evidence of a sure outcome.
5. Examine the curriculum and learning experience
Match lessons to the work you intend to do
Request the current syllabus, module list, project instructions, grading criteria, and software versions. Look for hands-on assignments that produce portfolio evidence or practice the tasks named in job postings. Check how often the curriculum is updated and whether it covers security, accessibility, data handling, or other responsibilities relevant to the role.
Find out how instruction works
Determine whether classes are live at scheduled times, self-paced, or a mixture. Ask how quickly instructors answer questions, whether assignments receive individual feedback, and what happens when you fall behind. Find out who teaches the course, their practical and teaching experience, and the expected live-class size. A sample lesson or a conversation with recent students can reveal more than a marketing summary.
Confirm practical support
Ask who helps when software will not install, an assessment is disputed, or an accessibility accommodation is needed. Clarify office hours, technical-support hours, response targets, tutoring, peer forums, and the process for redoing failed work. If the course promises an externship or placement assistance, request the written eligibility rules, available locations, student responsibilities, and historical participation rate.

6. Confirm computer, software, and internet requirements
Obtain the exact requirements before buying anything. The list should specify supported operating systems, processor and memory expectations, storage, webcam or microphone needs, browser versions, internet speed or data limits, and any required peripherals. Ask whether a tablet or Chromebook is supported or whether desktop software is mandatory.
Identify what is included
Have the provider mark each item as supplied, loaned, discounted, or your responsibility. Confirm the duration of software access, whether licenses are tied to a school account, and what happens when the course ends. Ask about cloud-storage limits and the cost of retaining project files. Do not assume that every digital-skills course requires a new laptop; the required specification depends on the software and instruction.

Before the refund window closes, log in, run any required diagnostic, install the stated applications, and complete a sample exercise. Record error messages and request support in writing. A computer that can stream video may still fail when a course requires local development tools, virtual machines, large design files, or multiple monitors.

Map the cancellation process
Write down the cancellation deadline, required notice method, address or portal, refund formula, and the date a withdrawal becomes effective. Ask what happens to financed balances, equipment, downloaded materials, exam vouchers, and access to records. Save confirmation numbers and copies of every message. A verbal assurance that you can “always cancel” is not a substitute for the written policy.
Check workload and time commitments
Confirm the expected hours per week, attendance rules, assignment deadlines, exam windows, and any mandatory live sessions. A schedule that conflicts with work or caregiving can turn an otherwise suitable course into an expensive withdrawal. Ask whether you can pause, transfer, or make up missed work and what charges apply.
8. Watch for pressure and investigate complaints
Recognize high-pressure enrollment behavior
- A recruiter demands payment before allowing you to read the contract or financing terms.
- You are told that a discount expires immediately or that you must decide during the call.
- Staff discourage you from contacting employers, regulators, or former students.
- The provider will not give written definitions for placement, externship, or hiring-partner claims.
- Questions about refunds, licensing, or total cost receive changing or incomplete answers.
Pause the process when any of these occurs. Take the documents away, compare the claims independently, and do not let a promised discount replace basic verification.
Search for complaints with context
Check the relevant state education or licensing agency and your state attorney general for complaints, enforcement actions, and required disclosures. Look for patterns involving billing, refunds, advertising, or credential recognition. Few complaints do not prove that a provider has no problems: complaint volume depends on enrollment size, reporting habits, and how long the program has operated.
9. Compare programs with a consistent scorecard
Collect the same evidence from every provider so that a polished presentation cannot outweigh missing information. Use a worksheet with these columns:
| Decision factor | Evidence to record |
|---|---|
| Outcome fit | Target role, employer requirements, portfolio tasks, certification or license pathway. |
| Recognition | Accreditation listing when applicable, accreditor recognition, employer or transfer-school acceptance, state eligibility. |
| Learning quality | Syllabus date, practical projects, instructor access, feedback method, class format and size. |
| Total financial commitment | Tuition, fees, equipment, software, exams, financing repayment, cancellation and withdrawal costs. |
| Outcomes | Completion and placement definitions, cohort and timeframe, graduate count, salary methodology, supporting records. |
| Practical fit | Schedule, weekly workload, computer and internet requirements, accessibility, technical and student support. |
Mark an item “not stated” rather than filling gaps with assumptions. A provider that supplies comparable definitions and documents is easier to evaluate than one that offers only testimonials or broad percentages.

- State the role or skill outcome and list the evidence employers or regulators require.
- Review job postings and ask potential employers which training they recognize.
- Check the institution and accreditor in the Department of Education database when accreditation is relevant.
- Confirm employer, transfer, and state-licensing acceptance of the exact credential.
- Obtain an itemized total price, including equipment, software, exams, financing, and withdrawal charges.
- Compare that total with public, employer, apprenticeship, and community-college alternatives.
- Request written completion, placement, salary, externship, and hiring-partner definitions with cohort dates and counts.
- Inspect the syllabus, projects, instructor qualifications, feedback process, schedule, and support channels.
- Verify every computer, operating-system, software, internet, and peripheral requirement.
- Read the enrollment agreement, financing documents, privacy terms, and refund procedure before signing.
- Check complaints and enforcement records, then walk away from pressure to enroll immediately.
Enroll only when the program’s documented requirements, recognition, cost, learning support, and measured outcomes line up with your intended next step. If a material answer remains unavailable in writing, treat that uncertainty as a reason to delay or choose a provider that can document it.
