Before you order a new internet service, verify that it serves your exact address, calculate the full cost after introductory pricing, check your current contract and exit charges, schedule the change to protect continuity, and account for bundled services and equipment. A low advertised monthly price is not enough to prove that switching is worthwhile.
Switching rules differ by country. The One Touch Switch and cancellation periods described below are UK guidance; US disclosures and map information follow Federal Communications Commission (FCC) sources. Elsewhere, check your national regulator and the provider’s current terms.
1. Confirm the new service can actually reach your home
Check the exact address, not just the postcode or neighborhood
Run the prospective provider’s availability check using the complete service address, including apartment or unit details. Ask the provider to confirm the result if the online checker is unclear. Availability can differ between neighboring buildings, and an order may require non-standard construction that changes both timing and cost.
Recommended Free Tools
Record the connection type offered at your address—such as fiber, cable, fixed wireless, or another access method—along with the estimated installation date. Ask whether an engineer visit, landlord permission, a new line, or construction work is required. Do not cancel your existing service until the new provider confirms that the order is feasible.

Use coverage maps only as a starting point
In the United States, the FCC National Broadband Map reports availability information submitted by providers. The FCC says the map does not show performance, affordability, or adoption. Treat it as a lead for investigating an address, then verify the actual technology, price, speed, and installation conditions directly with the provider. A map entry is not a guarantee that the advertised plan can be ordered at your home.
2. Calculate the real price over the period you expect to stay
Separate introductory and standard prices
Write down the monthly charge during every promotional period and the regular price that follows. Note the date or billing cycle when the discount ends. Compare the total you expect to pay over your intended period, rather than ranking plans by the first month’s price.
For example, a plan with a short discount can cost more over a two-year stay than a slightly more expensive plan with a longer fixed price. Put the end of the promotion in your calendar so a later price increase does not surprise you.

Include provider fees, router or modem rental, installation, activation, taxes, and the cost of any bundle you need to keep. Ask whether equipment is included, rented, or sold separately. If the plan has a data allowance, include likely overage charges in your estimate.
| Cost item | What to record before ordering |
|---|---|
| Monthly service | Introductory price, discount duration, and standard price after the discount |
| Recurring extras | Equipment rental, line fees, service add-ons, and bundle charges |
| One-time charges | Installation, activation, construction, shipping, and equipment purchase |
| Usage charges | Data allowance, overage rate, and any throttling or suspension terms |
| Taxes and discounts | Taxes, autopay or paperless-billing discounts, and eligibility conditions |
| Leaving the old provider | Early termination fee, final bill, equipment-return costs, and cancellation notice |
Use the provider’s disclosure documents
US customers can use the FCC Broadband Facts label to capture monthly price, whether the displayed price is introductory, contract requirements, monthly and one-time charges, early termination fees, taxes, discounts, bundles, and customer-owned-equipment options. Check that the label applies to the exact plan and address you are ordering.

UK customers should read both the contract summary and the full contract information. Ofcom’s checklist says price and relevant contract terms should be clear before sign-up. Save a copy of the offer and the checkout screen because promotional terms can change later.
3. Check your current contract and the cost of leaving
Find the minimum-term end date
Ask your current provider for the minimum-term end date, cancellation notice requirement, and exact early termination charge. Check the latest bill and account portal, but request written confirmation if the date or amount is ambiguous. A plan that is out of its minimum term may still have notice rules or equipment-return obligations.
Do not assume an exit-fee offer makes switching cheaper
A new provider may offer to reimburse an old provider’s termination charge, but that does not automatically produce a lower total cost. Compare the reimbursement conditions, the new plan’s standard price, installation charges, and any required contract term against the cost of staying until your current term ends.
Know the UK cancellation window
Ofcom’s UK switching guidance, last updated 25 August 2026, states that a consumer can cancel a UK switch order within 14 calendar days under the applicable distance-contract rules. Confirm how the period applies to your order, what cancellation method is accepted, and whether any services already supplied affect the amount due. This 14-day rule is UK guidance, not a universal entitlement in every country.
4. Compare performance details, not just the headline speed
Record upload and download information
Compare upload as well as download performance. Ofcom’s UK checklist says fixed-broadband information should explain minimum, normally available, maximum, and advertised download and upload speeds. Ask which figures apply to your address and how they are measured. “Up to” speed is not the same as a normally available or minimum speed.

- Wave 2 Wireless Internet Router: Achieve up to 600 Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and up to 1300 Mbps on the 5GHz band. Dual-band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- OneMesh Compatible Router- Form a seamless WiFi when work with TP-Link OneMesh WiFi Extenders.
- MU-MIMO Gigabit Router, 3 simultaneous data streams help your devices achieve optimal performance by making communication more efficient

- Full Gigabit Ports: Create fast, reliable wired connections for your PCs, Smart TVs and gaming console with 4 x Gigabit LAN and 1 x Gigabit WAN. No USB Port
For US plans, read the speed information on the Broadband Facts label and ask what technology and equipment support the stated figures. No independent speed or reliability test establishes how any particular plan will perform in your home, so treat provider figures as the terms of the offer rather than a guarantee of real-world results.

Check data limits and traffic policies
Confirm whether the service is unlimited, subject to a monthly allowance, or subject to overage billing. Ask what happens after an allowance is reached: additional fees, reduced speeds, or suspension are materially different outcomes. Estimate your household’s usage, including video meetings, cloud backups, game downloads, and security-camera uploads.
5. Plan the switch so you do not lose connectivity
Find out who starts and manages cancellation
Ask the new provider whether it initiates cancellation with the old provider or whether you must contact both companies. In the UK, Ofcom’s One Touch Switch guidance says to start with the new provider, which manages the switch. That process is UK-specific; do not assume the same arrangement applies elsewhere.
Confirm activation, installation, and equipment dates
Get the expected activation date in writing. Ask whether an engineer must visit, whether you need to be present, and when the router or other equipment will arrive. Changing network technology or moving to full fibre in the UK may require an engineer visit or new equipment.
Ofcom’s UK guidance says service loss should not last longer than one working day and describes compensation in specified circumstances. This is a UK guidance expectation, not a worldwide guarantee. If the new and old services are managed separately, arrange an intentional overlap and confirm the extra days and charges with both providers.

Keep a recovery plan
- Keep the old service active until the new connection is working, unless the provider has confirmed a managed transfer that makes this unnecessary.
- Save both providers’ support numbers and your order or account references offline.
- Ask what happens if installation is delayed and whether the old service can remain active without restarting a minimum term.
- Have a temporary connection option available if a short outage would affect work, school, alarms, or medical devices.
6. Audit bundles, phone service, and email before you cancel
Identify every service on the account
Broadband may be tied to a landline, television package, mobile discount, security service, or another add-on. List each component and its price. Determine whether changing broadband cancels, reprices, or leaves any component in place.
Ofcom notes that switching broadband may also switch a landline. Confirm whether you are keeping the telephone number, how emergency calling works during the change, and whether a separate phone contract has its own minimum term.
Protect provider-supplied email
Ask the old provider what happens to an email address it supplied. Establish the retention period, forwarding options, export method, and date of closure before submitting cancellation. Move important accounts to an address you control independently and update recovery details while the old mailbox still works.
Prepare connected devices
When the new router is active, phones, computers, printers, televisions, cameras, speakers, and smart-home equipment may need the new Wi-Fi name and password. If the new router permits it, reusing the old network name and password can reduce reconnection work; use a strong password and change it if the old credentials were widely shared.
7. Check router and other equipment requirements
Clarify ownership and compatibility
Ask whether the provider supplies a router, rents it, sells it, or requires you to provide one. Confirm whether your existing router is compatible with the access technology, authentication method, telephone service, and required firmware. A device that worked on the old network may not work on the new one.
Best Value
- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Ofcom says a switch may require new equipment and that setup is likely to include a new broadband router. If you must supply your own, search for a broadband router compatible with your provider only after receiving the provider’s technical requirements. There is no universal router model that works with every service.
Plan the physical setup
- Check where the incoming line or optical terminal will be installed and whether power is available nearby.
- Confirm whether the provider supplies cables, filters, power adapters, and any separate modem or fibre terminal.
- Ask how to return rented equipment, which items must be returned, and the deadline and shipping method.
- Record the router’s administrator credentials and change default passwords during setup.
8. Compare offers with one consistent worksheet
Collect the same facts for every candidate plan. The following axes prevent an attractive introductory price from hiding a poor fit.
| Comparison axis | Evidence to capture | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Address and technology | Address confirmation, access type, construction requirement, installation date | Can this plan be installed at the required address on the required date? |
| Performance and usage | Upload and download figures, speed categories, data allowance, overage terms | Does it meet the household’s actual work, entertainment, and backup needs? |
| Total cost | Promotional and standard prices, recurring fees, one-time charges, taxes, equipment | What will the service cost over the intended stay? |
| Contract and exit | Minimum term, end date, notice, early termination fee, equipment return | Can you leave or move without an unaffordable charge? |
| Continuity | Who cancels, activation date, engineer requirement, outage process, overlap cost | How will the household stay connected during the change? |
| Services and equipment | Landline, TV, email, router ownership, compatibility, device setup | What will stop, change price, or need reconfiguration? |
9. Country-specific checks
United Kingdom
Use the current Ofcom switching guidance and contract checklist for UK orders. One Touch Switch normally begins with the new provider; Ofcom’s guidance describes a maximum expected service-loss period of one working day, specified compensation circumstances, and a 14-calendar-day cancellation period for a UK switch order. These statements depend on the applicable order and circumstances, so read the provider’s confirmation.

Use the FCC Broadband Facts label to review price, introductory status, contract, charges, early termination fee, taxes, discounts, bundles, and equipment choices. The FCC National Broadband Map can help identify reported availability, but it does not establish performance, affordability, or adoption. Verify the offer directly with the provider.
Other countries
Switching procedures, cooling-off rights, compensation, number portability, and contract disclosures vary. Identify the local communications regulator, then read the provider’s current contract and cancellation terms for your address. Do not import UK or US timelines into another jurisdiction.
