Before buying VIAVI Solutions Inc. (Nasdaq: VIAV), check what is driving its growth, whether reported earnings support the growth story, how much financial flexibility it has, and what the stock price already assumes about future performance. VIAVI’s fiscal 2026 results show sharply higher revenue alongside a GAAP net loss, making the distinction between reported and adjusted results especially important. The figures below come from the company’s fiscal 2026 results release dated August 5, 2026, and its Form 10-K filed August 13, 2026; a share-price or valuation conclusion requires a current quote and subsequent company updates.
1. Understand what VIAVI sells and which businesses are growing
VIAVI is a test-and-measurement and optical-technology company. Its products and services support data centers, communications networks, military and aerospace, railways, and first-responder communications. It also serves anti-counterfeiting, consumer-electronics, industrial, automotive, and other markets. That breadth matters because the company’s results depend on different customer budgets and technology cycles, not on one uniform end market.
VIAVI reports two segments: Network and Service Enablement (NSE) and Optical Security and Performance Products (OSP). In fiscal 2026, NSE generated $1,182.9 million in revenue and OSP generated $335.4 million. The figures below are for the fiscal year ended June 27, 2026.

These segment results help separate broad-based progress from growth concentrated in a particular business. NSE grew much faster than OSP in fiscal 2026, and the company attributed much of NSE’s increase to data-center-related demand and the Spirent acquisition. For your own assessment, ask whether future growth is coming from ongoing customer demand, acquired revenue, or both. Acquisition-driven growth can enlarge the business, but it is not the same evidence as customers buying more of VIAVI’s pre-existing products.

Questions to answer from the next filing
- Did each segment continue to grow, and at what rate?
- Does management explain changes by end market, product demand, or acquisition effects?
- Is growth spread across multiple customers and applications, or increasingly dependent on a few large programs?
- Are reported segment trends consistent with the growth case you are considering?
The company’s description of its diversification strategy is management’s explanation of its priorities, not proof that the strategy will deliver a particular result. In the August 5, 2026 results release, CEO Oleg Khaykin said growth in the data-center ecosystem and aerospace and defense had been key drivers during fiscal 2026 and that the company expected the strategy to continue supporting growth for the next several quarters. Treat that statement as management’s outlook and compare it with subsequent reported results.
2. Compare revenue growth with margins and both earnings measures
VIAVI reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $1,518.3 million, up 40.0% year over year. Revenue growth alone does not show how much profit the company kept from sales or whether earnings were positive under standard accounting rules. For fiscal 2026, the company reported a 6.9% GAAP operating margin and a 20.6% non-GAAP operating margin. That large spread is a reason to inspect the definitions and reconciliations rather than relying on the more favorable measure alone.

GAAP figures follow generally accepted accounting principles. Non-GAAP figures are adjusted measures defined by the company; they can help investors examine results on management’s chosen basis, but they do not replace GAAP results. In this case, the company reported a GAAP net loss and a positive non-GAAP net income, so the difference is material to any investment thesis that depends on profitability.

In the fiscal 2026 release, VIAVI reported $56.7 million in losses related to extinguishing certain convertible notes and Term Loan B. Review the company’s reconciliation to see how this and other adjustments affect its non-GAAP figures. For every material exclusion, ask what caused it, whether similar costs have appeared in earlier periods, whether the item is genuinely unusual, and whether it required cash. An expense can be excluded from a company’s adjusted earnings measure and still matter to shareholders.

Then compare revenue, GAAP operating margin, GAAP net income, and non-GAAP results across several reporting periods. A single year can be distorted by acquisitions, financing changes, or other events. A stronger operating picture would be one in which sales growth is accompanied by sustainable margins and cash generation, not merely a widening gap between GAAP and adjusted earnings. The filing and release provide the company’s reported measures; whether the adjustments are reasonable and the resulting earnings power is durable is an investor judgment.
3. Check liquidity, debt, and the cash generated by operations
At June 27, 2026, VIAVI reported $656.7 million in cash, short-term investments, and short-term restricted cash. Its senior notes had $650.0 million in aggregate principal and a combined net carrying value of $641.9 million. Fiscal 2026 cash flow from operations was $113.9 million.
Do not treat the difference between the reported cash-and-investment total and the notes’ carrying value as a complete measure of net cash or as proof that the debt is covered. The cash total includes restricted cash, and the notes’ carrying value differs from their aggregate principal. Read the full balance sheet and debt note for the composition, restrictions, maturities, interest terms, and any other obligations that affect the company’s financial flexibility.

- Separate unrestricted cash and investments from restricted balances.
- Compare debt principal with carrying value and note the timing of maturities.
- Read for debt repayment, refinancing, or extinguishment activity and its costs.
- Check whether operating cash flow is sufficient to support investment and obligations without relying on new borrowing or share issuance.
- Compare operating cash flow with net income over time; differences can reflect working capital, non-cash accounting items, or other factors that deserve explanation.
The $113.9 million operating cash flow figure is a reported fiscal-year total, not a forecast of future cash generation. For a useful trend, compare it with cash flow from earlier fiscal years and with earnings over the same periods. The balance sheet is a snapshot at June 27, 2026; later quarterly filings may show a different cash, debt, or working-capital position.

4. Separate reported results from guidance and check what happened next
In its August 5, 2026 release, VIAVI forecast revenue of $450 million to $460 million and non-GAAP diluted EPS of $0.40 to $0.42 for fiscal 2027’s first quarter, which ended October 3, 2026. This was management guidance, not an actual result. Because that quarter has now ended, do not use the forecast as if it were still a forward-looking current-quarter estimate: compare it with the subsequently reported quarter and check for any later updates.
When comparing guidance with actual results, keep the periods and measures aligned. Compare the stated revenue range with reported revenue for that specific quarter, and compare the non-GAAP EPS range with non-GAAP EPS using the company’s stated basis. Also inspect GAAP results and the reconciliation; meeting adjusted guidance does not answer whether GAAP profitability or cash generation improved.
- Find the latest earnings release and quarterly filing after the period you are evaluating.
- Match each forecast to its exact quarter and metric; do not compare a quarterly figure with a full-year result.
- Record actual revenue, GAAP earnings, adjusted earnings, margins, and operating cash flow.
- Read management’s explanation for any miss, beat, or change in outlook, then check whether the explanation is reflected in the segment results.
- Use the newest guidance only as a forecast, and revisit it when the company reports again.
VIAVI’s fiscal year ends on the last Saturday in June. Fiscal-year labels therefore follow the company’s reporting calendar, which may not match the calendar year. Confirm the reporting period shown on each release or filing before comparing numbers.
5. Evaluate the company’s disclosed risks against the growth case
VIAVI’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K identifies risks that could affect demand, pricing, margins, or the company’s ability to execute. These are company-disclosed risk factors, not predictions that every event will occur. Consider how each one could affect the particular growth driver you are relying on.

- Customer concentration and pricing pressure: Dependence on a limited number of customers or programs can make results vulnerable to changes in order volume or negotiating leverage. Pricing pressure can also erode revenue quality even when unit demand holds up.
- Competition: The company identifies competition, including from Asia-based competitors. Consider whether competing products could affect sales, pricing, or the cost of maintaining product performance.
- Product mix: A shift among products can change revenue and gross margin. Look beyond total sales to the mix explanations in company reporting.
- Changing customer buying patterns: Customers may alter the timing or size of purchases, making a strong period an unreliable guide to the next one.
- Industry consolidation: Consolidation in communications markets may change customer demand or bargaining power.
- Trade policies: Tariffs, sanctions, and other global trade policies may affect the company’s ability to sell, source, or deliver products across markets.
- Technology adoption: Slower or different-than-expected adoption of 5G, 3D sensing, or other technologies could affect demand tied to those markets.
Translate these risks into questions about the thesis: Would the investment still make sense if data-center demand slowed, a large customer delayed purchases, or product mix reduced margins? Does the expected growth depend on technology adoption occurring on a particular timetable? These are scenario questions, not claims about what will happen.

A company’s results do not by themselves tell you whether its shares are attractively priced. No synchronized market quote or peer valuation is established here, so there is no support for calling VIAV cheap or expensive or assigning it a current price multiple. Before making a valuation judgment, record the share price and date, then state which earnings or cash-flow measure you are using.
Choose a valuation basis that fits the reported results
Because VIAVI reported a GAAP net loss for fiscal 2026, a price-to-earnings calculation based on that year’s GAAP earnings per share would not provide a conventional positive earnings multiple. An adjusted-earnings multiple can be calculated from the company’s non-GAAP EPS, but it should be labeled non-GAAP and interpreted alongside the reconciliation, GAAP loss, and cash flow. Do not present an adjusted multiple as interchangeable with a GAAP one.

Those bases answer different questions. If comparing VIAVI with other companies, use the same period and accounting basis where possible, and check whether their businesses and growth profiles are genuinely comparable. A ratio without a dated price, a stated earnings basis, and an explanation of comparability is not a complete valuation case.

Check share and dividend details
VIAVI’s investor FAQ says its common shares trade on Nasdaq under the ticker VIAV and that the company does not currently pay cash dividends. The FAQ directs shareholders to the latest 10-K or 10-Q for shares outstanding. Use the most recent filing for that figure if you need to assess market capitalization or per-share dilution; share counts can change over time. The FAQ also says holders may contact a broker of their choice to sell shares. It does not identify a preferred brokerage, and the choice of broker is separate from whether VIAV fits an investor’s objectives.
7. A practical pre-purchase checklist
Before placing an order, work through these checks with the latest available company information and a quote observed at a specific time:
- Confirm the security: Verify that the instrument is VIAVI Solutions Inc. common stock, Nasdaq ticker VIAV, rather than a similarly named security.
- Write down the thesis: Identify the business segment, end market, or financial improvement you believe will drive returns.
- Test the growth: Compare NSE and OSP revenue and growth, and distinguish acquisition contributions from demand for existing products.
- Reconcile earnings: Review GAAP and non-GAAP margins, net income, EPS, and the company’s explanation of excluded items.
- Check financial flexibility: Examine unrestricted liquidity, debt terms and maturities, and operating cash flow in the latest filing.
- Update the timeline: Compare expired forecasts with actual results and use only the latest guidance as guidance.
- Assess the risks: Consider how customer concentration, competition, product mix, purchasing patterns, trade policy, and technology adoption could undermine your thesis.
- State the valuation basis: Record the quote date and price, the earnings or cash-flow period, and whether the measure is GAAP, non-GAAP, or forecast.
- Decide what would change your mind: Set out which future results or developments would weaken or invalidate the investment case.
This process does not produce a universal buy-or-sell answer. It helps ensure the decision rests on the company’s reported performance, the assumptions embedded in your valuation, and risks you have explicitly considered rather than on revenue growth alone.
