Do not buy a used PS2 or PS3 disc expecting it to run on a PS4 or PS5. Sony documents that PS4 systems have no backward compatibility for PS2 or PS3 discs, and PS5 systems do not support PS3 discs or PS2-format software from disc. The useful checks begin by identifying the exact disc generation and the exact newer console. A PS4 disc is a different case: most PS4 games run on PS5, but the console must have a disc drive and the individual title must not be listed as PS4-only.
Start with the exact console and disc, not the PlayStation logo
Used-game listings often show only a PlayStation logo, a photo of the cover, or a seller’s phrase such as “works on newer PlayStation.” That is not enough information to make a compatibility decision. Ask for the platform printed on both the case and the disc. It should clearly say PS2, PS3, or PS4. Then identify the console that will actually be used: PS4, PS5 with a disc drive, or PS5 Digital Edition.
Generation labels are decisive because a PS2 disc and a PS3 disc are not interchangeable formats, and neither format is accepted as a normal game disc by PS4 or PS5. The word “PlayStation” on the front of a case does not indicate which generation produced the game.

The table applies to ordinary disc use. A separately sold remaster, a digital release, or a game-specific upgrade is a different product and must be checked under its own terms.

How Sony’s compatibility rules affect a used-game purchase
PS4 systems
Sony’s Europe PlayStation 4 FAQ, published October 30, 2013, says the PS4 system does not feature backward compatibility for PS3, PS2, or PSone games. That statement concerns playing those older discs directly in a PS4; it does not prevent a publisher from releasing a separate PS4 remaster or digital version of an older game.
The same FAQ says the PS4 does not restrict players from playing disc-based used games. In practical terms, a genuine used PS4 disc can be used on a compatible PS4 without being rejected merely because it has a previous owner. Used-game acceptance, however, does not extend to PS2 or PS3 discs.
PS5 systems
Sony’s current PS5 backward-compatibility guidance describes support for the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, while identifying exceptions. It separately states that PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation 3 discs. Sony’s PS5 safety documentation also says PS2 and PS3 format software cannot be played from disc. These are generation rules, not defects that a cleaning kit, adapter, or different HDMI cable can correct.

Compatibility lists and upgrade conditions can change. Before buying, search the exact game title in Sony’s current compatibility guidance or in the relevant PlayStation Store listing, and install the latest PS5 system software. “Most PS4 games” means that some exceptions remain; it is not a guarantee for every PS4 release.
Use this buying procedure before handing over money
- Request a clear platform photo. Ask the seller to photograph the front of the case, the spine, and the disc label. The platform should be legible as PS2, PS3, or PS4. If the seller supplies only a generic image, treat the platform as unverified.
- Write down the target console model. Record whether it is a PS4, a PS5 with an optical disc drive, or a PS5 Digital Edition. If the buyer has not received the console yet, confirm the exact edition from the model listing rather than assuming every PS5 accepts discs.
- Reject PS2 and PS3 discs for direct PS4 or PS5 play. Do not let a low price, an unopened case, or a seller’s claim override the generation check. The disc format remains the limiting factor.
- For a PS4 disc going to PS5, verify the drive. A physical PS4 game requires a PS5 console that can read discs. A Digital Edition has no disc drive, so the physical copy cannot be installed or launched on it. On a disc-drive PS5, the PS4 disc must remain inserted whenever the game is played.
- Check the exact PS4 title. Search the complete title, edition, and any subtitle in Sony’s compatibility information. Some games are marked PS4-only. Do not infer that a sequel, regional edition, bundle, or similarly named release has the same status.
- Check for an upgrade requirement. A listing may advertise a PS3 disc together with an upgrade to a digital PS4 version. Treat this as a title-specific offer, not as PS3 backward compatibility. Read the upgrade conditions, including whether the offer is available in the buyer’s country or region and whether the original disc is required.
- Confirm the seller’s return terms. If compatibility depends on a title listing or upgrade offer, obtain a return option in writing. A disc that is physically readable can still be unusable on the intended console.
- Keep the evidence. Save the listing, photographs, title information, and any stated upgrade terms until the game has been tested on the intended console. This is especially useful when a seller has mixed editions in one listing.
When a PS4 disc is intended for a PS5
This is the one common physical-disc path between the generations covered here. Sony says most PS4 games are playable on PS5, but some are identified as PS4-only. The check therefore has three separate parts: the disc must really be a PS4 disc, the PS5 must have a disc drive, and the exact title must be listed as compatible.

What happens on a disc-drive PS5
Insert the PS4 disc while signed in to the intended user account. The console may install a PS5-compatible version or an available update, but the original PS4 disc remains the ownership check and must stay inserted during play. Removing it can prevent the game from launching. Storage requirements, patches, and download size are title-specific, so do not assume that a small disc installation means no additional download is needed.
What happens on a PS5 Digital Edition
A Digital Edition cannot read a physical PS4 disc. Buying the same game digitally may be possible if the title is sold for the account’s store region, but that is a separate purchase and license. A disc cannot be converted into a digital entitlement merely by entering its name in the store.
Why the exact title matters
Compatibility is attached to a particular release, not just to a franchise name. Check the complete title, edition, and platform shown by the seller. If Sony’s listing labels a game “PS4 only,” the PS4 disc should not be purchased for PS5 play. Keep the console updated because Sony’s compatibility guidance and game-specific support can change.
Do not confuse a PS3-to-PS4 upgrade with PS3-disc compatibility
Some games offered an upgrade from a PS3 purchase to a digital PS4 version. The offer may require a qualifying PS3 disc, a matching account, a particular country or region, or a limited promotional period. Sony’s upgrade instructions describe these as game-specific arrangements.
The important PS5 limitation is that Sony says an upgraded PS4 digital game that still requires its PS3 disc cannot be played on PS5. The PS3 disc is not transformed into a generally compatible PS5 game. Before paying for a used PS3 copy advertised with an upgrade, verify all of the following:

- The offer applies to the buyer’s country or store region.
- The seller is providing the correct PS3 edition, not a different regional or bundled release.
- The upgraded PS4 version can be used on the intended PS5 under the current rules.
- The upgrade does not require the PS3 disc at launch on PS5.
If any requirement is unclear, value the purchase as a PS3 disc only. Do not pay extra on the assumption that an old promotion remains available.
If you are buying an older PS3 to play PS2 discs
The question changes when the target machine is itself a PS3. Some early PS3 hardware had limited support for older PlayStation software, but that does not mean every PS3 can play PS2 discs.
Sony’s manual for the CECH-2101A and CECH-2101B model group, using software version 3.10, states that the cited model does not play PS2-format software and has limited PlayStation-format compatibility. That manual is evidence about that model group, not a universal statement about every PS3 revision.
Check the exact model number
- Ask the seller for a photograph of the model label on the console, not just the retail box.
- Compare the complete CECH model identifier with the documentation for that exact revision.
- Confirm the individual PS2 game separately; model-level support does not prove that every PS2 title works.
- Ask whether the console has been modified. A modified system can have different software, legal, and reliability considerations from an unmodified retail unit.
Do not buy a PS3 on the assumption that its age, size, or glossy finish indicates PS2 support. The model identifier is the relevant evidence.
Inspect the used listing and disc separately from compatibility
Compatibility is the first gate, but a compatible disc can still be a poor purchase if the listing is incomplete or the media is damaged. Use this inspection list after the generation check:

- Platform marking: the case and disc should identify the same generation.
- Disc identity: the printed title should match the case, and a multi-disc release should include every required disc.
- Surface condition: request photos of the data side under bright, angled light. Deep scratches, cracks around the hub, or label-side damage can cause read failures.
- Case and inserts: missing manuals do not normally change compatibility, but a replacement case can hide a mismatched disc. Treat a mismatched case as a reason to ask questions.
- Edition details: bundles, special editions, and regional releases may have different listings or upgrade conditions.
- Account requirements: a used disc does not transfer another person’s digital license, downloadable extras, or account-bound bonuses.
- Return policy: obtain a clear return period when the seller cannot demonstrate the disc on the same console generation.
Do not pay for a “complete” package when the actual item shown is a loose disc from another platform. Ask the seller to photograph the disc label and the console-compatible platform text in the same transaction.

“It is a PlayStation game, so it should work”
PlayStation is a family name spanning several hardware generations. Ask which platform is printed on the disc. A PS2 or PS3 label answers the question before price, condition, or seller reputation becomes relevant.
“The PS5 plays old games”
That statement usually refers to PS4 games, not PS2 or PS3 discs. Separate the supported PS4 catalog from unsupported older disc formats, then check the title-level exceptions.
“The seller tested it on a newer console”
Request the exact console and disc combination used in the test. A PS4 disc tested on a disc-drive PS5 says nothing about a PS3 disc, and a digital download test says nothing about a physical disc.
“The PS3 disc includes a PS4 upgrade”
Ask for the original promotion’s conditions and verify the PS5 restriction. An upgrade can be limited by title, region, account, date, and disc requirement; it is not a general compatibility route.

“A cleaning kit or adapter will make it work”
Cleaning can address dirt on an otherwise supported disc, but it cannot change the software generation. An adapter cannot supply a missing PS2 or PS3 compatibility feature in PS4 or PS5 hardware.
“Every PS3 can play PS2 games”
Model revisions differ. The CECH-2101A/CECH-2101B documentation specifically excludes PS2-format software for that cited group, so confirm the exact model instead of relying on a broad seller description.

What to do when the disc is not compatible
If the disc fails the generation check, do not try to solve the problem with accessories. Look for a version explicitly released for the target console, such as a PS4 or PS5 digital edition, a publisher-supported remaster, or a compatible older console whose exact model is documented for that software. Those are separate purchases with their own availability, licensing, and compatibility terms.

An older console may require checking both its model and the game. None of these alternatives should be assumed from the name of the original PS2 or PS3 disc.
Final pre-purchase checklist
- Read the platform printed on the actual disc: PS2, PS3, or PS4.
- Identify whether the target is PS4, PS5 with a drive, or PS5 Digital Edition.
- Reject PS2 and PS3 discs for direct play on PS4 or PS5.
- For a PS4 disc on PS5, confirm the drive, title compatibility, and current system software.
- Remember that a PS4 disc must stay inserted during play on a disc-drive PS5.
- Treat PS3-to-PS4 upgrades as title-specific and verify that a PS3 disc is not required on PS5.
- If purchasing a PS3 for PS2 software, record the complete model number and check that game separately.
- Inspect the disc, edition, included media, and return policy after compatibility is established.
These checks prevent the most expensive mistake in the used-game market: buying a physically genuine disc that belongs to the wrong console generation.
