Before ordering, verify three things: the main system is the Sony BRAVIA Theatre Trio (HT-A8), the optional surround speakers are BRAVIA Theatre Rear 9 (SA-RS9), and the subwoofer is BRAVIA Theatre Sub 9 (SA-SW9). Sony lists those models as compatible, but compatibility, software, setup sequence and regional availability all matter. The checks below help you avoid buying a speaker that cannot pair with your system or discovering a placement and TV-feature problem after delivery.
Identify the exact products
Sony uses family names that can hide important model differences. Match the code on the retailer listing, carton and product label rather than relying only on a shortened title.

The Rear 9 and Sub 9 are different types of add-on. Rear 9 handles surround channels behind the listening position; Sub 9 handles bass. Buying one does not substitute for the other.

Use Sony’s current compatibility list
Sony’s compatibility material lists SA-RS9 and SA-SW9 for the HT-A8. It also lists other optional rear and subwoofer models, so a Sony logo alone is not proof that a speaker will pair with this system. Check the current list for the exact HT-A8 entry immediately before ordering.

Check the sales region
Sony states that models may not be sold in every country or region. A product imported from another market can have different availability, support, power or software arrangements. Confirm that the model is officially available where you live and that the seller supplies the correct regional version.
Check both the main unit and the add-ons
- Read the model code in the listing, not just the headline.
- Ask the seller for a photograph of the model label if the code is missing.
- Verify that the return policy covers an incompatible or region-mismatched item.
- Do not assume an older Sony rear speaker or subwoofer will work because it uses a similar name.
Plan the software and connection process
Install the required app
Sony requires the latest Sony | BRAVIA Connect app to connect compatible optional speakers to the Trio. Install it on a supported phone or tablet before delivery and allow it to reach your home network. App labels and firmware requirements can change, so use the current version rather than an old installation.
Update the Trio first
Sony’s troubleshooting guidance recommends completing initial setup, updating the main audio device, and then connecting optional speakers. Some model-specific manuals describe connecting optional speakers during initial setup. Because the instructions differ by setup path, open the HT-A8 Help Guide and follow its stated order for your firmware. If no special order is specified, the cautious sequence is:

- Connect the HT-A8 and complete its basic initial setup.
- Connect it to the network and install any available system update.
- Install or update BRAVIA Connect.
- Use the app’s on-screen flow for adding optional speakers.
- Run the requested speaker test or sound-field calibration after every speaker is recognised.
Do not interrupt power or network access during a firmware update. A speaker that is compatible on paper can still fail to appear until the main unit and app are current.
Measure the Rear 9 before choosing locations
Each SA-RS9 is listed at 154 × 286 × 154 mm (6.13 × 11.38 × 6.13 in) and 5.95 lb. Those are manufacturer dimensions and weight, so allow additional clearance for cables, ventilation and access to the power connection.

Sony’s published material does not provide a single ideal distance from the seating position that applies to every room. Room shape, furniture and the calibration process affect the practical location, so do not buy based on an assumed distance that Sony has not specified.

Decide whether you actually need the Sub 9
The SA-SW9 is a separate subwoofer, not a replacement for the Rear 9 pair. Check that you have floor space, a nearby power outlet and a location that does not block doors, vents or walkways. The cited Sony information does not state the Sub 9’s dimensions, weight, price or an independent room-performance result; request the current local specification if those details determine whether it fits.

Sony states that dual-subwoofer operation requires a compatible main audio device and that two subwoofers used as a pair must be the same model. Sony support material identifies the HT-A8 among devices that support two subwoofers, but confirm the current HT-A8 instructions and local availability before purchasing a second unit. Do not mix different subwoofer models and expect them to operate as a matched pair.
Check your TV and gaming configuration
Voice Zoom 3
Sony lists the Trio with Voice Zoom 3 support when used with selected BRAVIA televisions. “Selected” matters: check your television’s exact model and software support rather than assuming every BRAVIA TV exposes the feature.

Direct Connect
Sony also describes Direct Connect with compatible BRAVIA TVs. Verify that your TV model and software are included in the current support information before treating this as a purchase requirement.
Game and PC lip-sync warning
Sony warns that Direct Connect can produce noticeable lip-sync problems when the TV content type is set to Game or PC. Its recommendation is to change the content type away from Game or PC to reduce the issue. If low-latency gaming modes are essential, check whether that trade-off fits your setup before relying on Direct Connect.
Use a buying checklist at checkout
- Model: HT-A8 for the Trio, SA-RS9 for Rear 9 and SA-SW9 for Sub 9.
- Compatibility: Confirm all selected models on Sony’s current HT-A8 compatibility information.
- Region: Verify local sale, warranty and power requirements.
- Software: Ensure your phone or tablet can run the latest BRAVIA Connect app and that your network is available for setup.
- Room: Measure both Rear 9 locations and plan power access; reserve a suitable location for the subwoofer.
- TV: Check model-specific support for Voice Zoom 3 and Direct Connect.
- Use case: Decide whether you need rear-channel immersion, additional bass, or both.
- Returns: Keep packaging until every component has paired and completed its test.
What to do if setup fails
The optional speaker is not detected
- Confirm the code on the speaker matches SA-RS9 or SA-SW9 and appears on the HT-A8 compatibility list.
- Update the Trio’s software and BRAVIA Connect.
- Restart the app and repeat its speaker-add procedure while the main system is powered on.
- Follow the model-specific Help Guide for the required pairing order; do not switch between conflicting procedures at random.
Sound Field Optimization fails
Sony says failed optimization can involve Wi-Fi connectivity or speaker placement. Check that the system and phone remain connected to the network, inspect each speaker’s placement label, and install the speakers upright. Move obstacles or relocate a speaker only within the practical limits of your room, then run optimization again.

Audio is out of sync while gaming
If Direct Connect is enabled and Game or PC content is selected, change the TV content type away from those settings as Sony recommends. If the problem remains, compare operation with Direct Connect disabled and use the connection method specified for your TV and HT-A8 software.
What the published specifications do—and do not—tell you
The Rear 9’s six-channel amplifier and 180 W total output are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements or a prediction of loudness in your room. They cannot by themselves establish sound quality, maximum listening level or coverage.
No cited source supplies a reliable market statistic, named-person quotation, price comparison or hands-on listening result for this combination. Treat retailer prices, stock and promotions as time- and region-sensitive, and do not use an unverified subjective ranking to choose between the add-ons.
Buying decision
Buy the combination only after the three model codes, HT-A8 compatibility, regional availability, app and firmware path, room measurements and TV feature support all check out. The Rear 9 is the surround expansion, while the Sub 9 is the bass expansion; selecting both makes sense only if you have the space and want both functions. If any model or region check is unresolved, pause the order and obtain confirmation from Sony or the seller before opening the box.
