Start by confirming which phone you are buying. The Fairphone (Gen. 6+) is a hardware refresh of The Fairphone (Gen. 6), not simply a renamed version. Fairphone lists the + model at €649 with a Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 processor and 12GB of RAM, while the earlier Gen. 6 is listed at €599 with a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 and 8GB. Those are Fairphone’s listed prices for its relevant market, not a guarantee of the price or availability at every retailer.

The buying decision then comes down to five checks: whether replacement parts are available for your exact model, how the two software-support promises fit your expected ownership period, what warranty and repair access exist in your country, whether performance meets your workload, and whether the price premium is worthwhile to you. Use the checklist below before ordering.

First, identify the exact model

Fairphone uses two very similar names: The Fairphone (Gen. 6) and The Fairphone (Gen. 6+). Treat them as separate products when you compare specifications, support, spare parts and repair instructions. A case, battery or other module described for one model should not be assumed to fit the other.

The + version is the newer hardware configuration. Fairphone’s product information lists it with a Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 system-on-chip, 12GB of RAM and a €649 listed price. The Gen. 6 is listed with a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3, 8GB of RAM and a €599 listed price. Check the checkout page for your country because taxes, currency conversion, promotions and retailer pricing can change the amount you actually pay.

If a listing says only “Fairphone 6,” ask the seller to state whether it is Gen. 6 or Gen. 6+. Save the model name and order details. That record can prevent you from purchasing an incompatible replacement part later.

Understand what the software promises actually mean

The two models have different Android-upgrade counts even though Fairphone gives both a June 2033 security-support endpoint. The Gen. 6 launched with Android 15 and has a commitment of at least seven Android version upgrades. The Gen. 6+ launched with Android 16 and has a commitment of at least six upgrades.

Those numbers are minimum commitments in Fairphone’s published roadmap, not a promise that every Android release will arrive on a particular day. Rollout timing can depend on the release, regional certification and carrier requirements. Think of an “Android version upgrade” as a major operating-system version change; it is not the same thing as a monthly security patch.

Security-update cadence

Fairphone says the Gen. 6 receives monthly security updates for about three years and the Gen. 6+ for about two years. From June 2028 through June 2033, the roadmap specifies updates every two months for both models. This cadence describes the company’s plan; it does not guarantee identical delivery dates in every market.

Match the roadmap to your ownership plan

  • Keeping the phone for two to three years: both models’ early monthly-update periods should cover the part of ownership when security fixes are most frequent, subject to the roadmap and actual rollout.
  • Keeping it into the 2030s: the June 2033 endpoint is the relevant comparison. You should still budget for a battery or other wear-part replacement during that time.
  • Prioritising major Android versions: the Gen. 6 has one more minimum upgrade than the + model because it starts on Android 15. Do not compare upgrade counts without also noting each launch version.

Before buying, decide whether security-support duration or the number of major Android upgrades matters more to you. The shared endpoint does not erase the difference in their upgrade roadmaps.

Check the repair system, not just the word “repairable”

Fairphone says the Gen. 6 and Gen. 6+ have 12 user-replaceable parts. Its support material provides replacement guidance for the battery, display, top unit, cameras and earpiece, loudspeaker and USB-C port. Fairphone describes the design intent this way: “The Fairphone (Gen. 6+) is designed to make repairs accessible and straightforward.” That is the company’s description of the design; your success still depends on the fault, your tools and your care.

What you can reasonably plan to replace

  • Battery: a practical option when capacity has declined after extended use.
  • Display: relevant after cracked glass or a failed screen assembly.
  • Top unit: useful for faults covered by that replaceable assembly.
  • Cameras and earpiece: Fairphone provides guidance for these components.
  • Loudspeaker: a separate repair path is documented.
  • USB-C port: a replaceable port can address charging or connection faults when the port itself is the problem.

The list does not mean every phone failure can be solved by changing a module. Fairphone says the core module is not sold separately and directs suspected core-module faults to its repair center. A phone with a board-level or core-module failure therefore has a different repair route from a worn battery or damaged display.

It even comes with a handy pouch to take it on-the go. They are also IP54-rated for dust and moisture, making them ideal for an outdoor run in light rain, or a heavy-duty workout session.

Parts are model-specific

Fairphone states that components are not interchangeable between different Fairphone models. Confirm that a part is expressly marked for Gen. 6 or Gen. 6+ before ordering. Do not rely on a photograph, connector shape or a seller’s generic “Fairphone 6” wording. If the model is ambiguous, pause the order and verify it with Fairphone support or the seller.

Use this pre-purchase spare-parts checklist

  1. Record the model name. Write down “The Fairphone (Gen. 6)” or “The Fairphone (Gen. 6+)” exactly as shown on the product page and order confirmation.
  2. List your likely failure points. If your priority is a replaceable battery, display or USB-C port, check that the corresponding guide and part are available for that exact model.
  3. Check stock and regional delivery. Availability can change, and a part listed by Fairphone may not be immediately available in your country.
  4. Price the complete repair. Include the part, shipping, taxes, tools and any professional labour. A modular design does not make a repair cost-free.
  5. Ask about the core module. If your concern is a processor, main-board or other core fault, understand that this module is not sold separately and may require Fairphone’s repair centre.

Do this check before purchase rather than after a failure. It tells you whether the repair advantage is practical where you live, not merely present in the product description.

Know what a typical self-repair requires

Fairphone’s repair instructions call for a Torx T5 screwdriver. Prepare a clean, flat workspace, a soft cloth, a small container for screws and a plastic card or guitar pick for separating parts where the guide directs you. A bright light and a way to keep removed screws organised are sensible additions.

Preparation sequence

  1. Back up your data. A repair can expose you to accidental damage or a device that will not boot until the work is corrected.
  2. Update the phone’s software first. Fairphone advises updating before a repair so firmware can recognise replacement parts.
  3. Charge the battery and power down as instructed. Follow the written or video guide for the specific component rather than applying a generic phone-disassembly method.
  4. Use the correct driver. A Torx T5 driver that fits the screw head reduces the chance of stripping it.
  5. Track each screw and connector. Keep screws in order and do not force a connector that the guide says to release in a particular direction.
  6. Test before final reassembly. Use the guide’s checks for the repaired function, then close the phone only after the component works.

These steps reduce avoidable mistakes, but they do not turn every repair into a risk-free operation. If the guide points to a core-module fault, stop disassembling and use Fairphone’s repair-centre route.

Separate warranty coverage from repairability

Fairphone advertises a five-year warranty, but the warranty you receive is governed by the terms that apply in your region. A long warranty and an easily replaceable battery answer different questions: the warranty concerns eligible defects and remedies, while repairability concerns how a component can be replaced.

Before buying a spare part

  1. Check whether the symptom could be a warranty issue. Contact support before opening the phone if the failure may be covered.
  2. Read the regional warranty terms. Confirm exclusions, proof-of-purchase requirements, shipping arrangements and whether accidental damage is covered.
  3. Ask before ordering a DIY part. Fairphone cautions that a self-purchased part may not be reimbursed later as a warranty claim.
  4. Keep records. Retain the order confirmation, support case number, photographs and any instructions you followed.

Do not assume that buying and installing a part is automatically the cheapest or safest warranty outcome. Compare the authorised repair path with the out-of-warranty part and labour cost in your country.

Evaluate performance against your actual workload

The Gen. 6+ has the newer Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 and 12GB of RAM, so it is the stronger specification of the two Fairphone models listed here. That does not establish that it will outperform every competing phone in every task. If you play demanding 3D games, edit video, run emulators or keep many heavy apps active, compare independent tests that resemble your use.

What one independent review measured

Tom’s Guide’s October 9, 2026 review recorded the Fairphone 6+ at 1,314 single-core and 3,674 multi-core in Geekbench 6. In 3DMark Wild Life Unlimited, it recorded 4,747 points and 28.47 frames per second. The reviewer compared those results with an iPhone 17e and Pixel 10a and described the Fairphone’s processing and gaming results as weaker than those rivals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those figures belong to that review’s phone, software version and test conditions. They are not a market-wide statistic, and they do not predict your battery life, thermal behaviour or frame rate in every game. Use them as a warning to investigate performance if gaming or sustained computation is central to your purchase.

Questions to ask about your workload

  • Do you mainly browse, message, stream, navigate and photograph? If so, repair access and update policy may matter more than benchmark leadership.
  • Do you play graphically demanding games for long sessions? Look for sustained-performance tests and game-specific results, not only the processor name.
  • Do you need large memory headroom? The + model’s listed 12GB may be useful for multitasking, but RAM capacity alone does not guarantee faster applications.
  • Are you replacing a phone with a faster chip? Compare the tasks that feel slow today and decide whether the repair and support benefits justify accepting a performance compromise.

Compare total value, not only the €50 difference

At Fairphone’s listed prices, the Gen. 6+ costs €50 more than the Gen. 6. That premium buys the newer processor and 4GB more RAM on the published specifications, but the Gen. 6 starts with Android 15 and has one more minimum Android version upgrade. Both share the June 2033 security endpoint in Fairphone’s roadmap.

Priority What to examine Potentially better fit
More current hardware Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 and 12GB RAM versus Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 and 8GB Gen. 6+
One additional minimum Android upgrade Seven from Android 15 versus six from Android 16 Gen. 6
Shared long-term security endpoint June 2033 in the published roadmap Neither has an endpoint advantage
Lowest listed purchase price €599 versus €649 on Fairphone’s page Gen. 6
Repair planning Exact model-specific parts, tools, warranty and regional service Check both individually

Then add the costs that the headline price omits: a replacement battery or display, shipping, taxes, a Torx T5 screwdriver if you do not own one, and professional repair if you do not want to work on the phone yourself. A cheaper phone is not necessarily cheaper over five to seven years if its repair route is unavailable where you live; a repairable phone is not automatically economical if parts or service are expensive.

Check regional access before placing the order

Fairphone’s published prices and warranty claims do not establish the terms for every country. Before paying, verify:

  • the final tax-inclusive price in your currency;
  • whether Fairphone sells and ships the exact model to your address;
  • the local warranty period, exclusions and return window;
  • where warranty and out-of-warranty repairs are performed;
  • shipping costs and expected delivery time for spare parts;
  • whether a replacement battery, display or USB-C port is currently in stock;
  • the availability of local authorised technicians if you do not want to self-repair.

These checks are especially important outside Fairphone’s primary sales regions. A support promise is useful only if you can access the update, part or repair service under the conditions that apply to you.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying a part for the wrong generation

Symptom: the listing says “Fairphone 6” without identifying Gen. 6 or Gen. 6+.

Fix: match the part to the exact model name and confirm compatibility before payment. Fairphone says parts are not interchangeable between models.

Assuming seven upgrades applies to the + model

Symptom: a comparison repeats the Gen. 6 upgrade count for the Gen. 6+.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: record the launch OS and minimum upgrade count together: Gen. 6 is Android 15 plus at least seven upgrades; Gen. 6+ is Android 16 plus at least six.

Opening a phone that may still be under warranty

Symptom: you order a part before asking whether the fault is covered.

Fix: check coverage and regional terms first. A self-purchased part may not be reimbursed later as a warranty claim.

Expecting every failure to be modular

Symptom: a suspected core-module fault is treated like a battery swap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: use Fairphone’s repair-centre route for core-module problems; that module is not sold separately.

A practical decision checklist

Answer each item before ordering:

  1. Is the listing explicitly for The Fairphone (Gen. 6+) rather than The Fairphone (Gen. 6)?
  2. Is €649 the final price in your market after taxes, shipping and any retailer adjustment?
  3. Do you prefer the + model’s Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 and 12GB RAM, or the Gen. 6’s lower listed price and additional minimum Android upgrade?
  4. Does the published support plan meet your intended ownership period, including the June 2033 security endpoint?
  5. Have you distinguished Android version upgrades from the monthly-then-bimonthly security-update schedule?
  6. Can you obtain the battery, display, top unit, camera/earpiece, loudspeaker and USB-C-port parts for your exact model?
  7. Do you understand that the core module is not sold separately?
  8. Do you have access to a Torx T5 screwdriver and a suitable workspace, or a repair service you trust?
  9. Have you read the warranty terms that apply in your country and checked whether a self-repair could affect a claim?
  10. Will the phone’s performance satisfy your demanding apps or games, given the independent review results?
  11. Have you estimated a realistic five-year ownership cost, including at least one possible wear-part replacement?

Who should buy the Fairphone (Gen. 6+)?

The Gen. 6+ makes the strongest case for someone who values user-replaceable components, wants the newer of Fairphone’s two current configurations and intends to keep a phone for many years. That buyer should be comfortable checking model-specific parts, following repair instructions and verifying regional warranty and service access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a less obvious choice for a buyer whose top priority is maximum gaming or benchmark performance per euro. The independent review cited above found weaker processing and gaming results than the selected iPhone 17e and Pixel 10a comparisons. It is also a poor fit if you expect to solve a core-module failure by ordering a replacement module yourself.

The Gen. 6 remains worth considering when its €599 listed price matters, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 is sufficient for your workload and the additional minimum Android upgrade is more valuable to you than the + model’s newer chip and extra RAM. Make that choice knowingly; do not treat the two names as interchangeable.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: buy The Fairphone (Gen. 6+) for its newer hardware and repair-oriented design only after confirming exact-model parts, regional warranty and repair access. Compare its €649 listed price and performance with your real workload, and remember that its support roadmap is Android 16 plus at least six upgrades with security support through June 2033—not the Gen. 6’s separate Android 15 and at least seven-upgrade promise.
