Choose the Sony WF-C510 if you want a straightforward, lower-cost pair with ambient sound, multipoint and long single-charge battery life. Choose the WF-C710N if commuting, travel or office noise makes active noise canceling (ANC) worth the extra money. The models share Bluetooth 5.3, SBC/AAC support, multipoint and IPX4 splash resistance, but they are not interchangeable: the WF-C710N adds ANC and a different battery profile.
Before ordering, check the mode-specific battery claims, whether your phone and laptop support the multipoint behavior you need, the limits of IPX4, included ear-tip fit and current app/firmware support. Sony’s published “up to” figures are maximums, not guaranteed runtime in every real-world setup.

Decide whether you need ANC
When the WF-C710N makes sense
Pick the WF-C710N when reducing external noise is a primary reason for buying new earbuds. Sony documents active noise canceling and dual microphones for this model, making it the relevant choice for train or bus commutes, aircraft cabins, shared offices and other consistently noisy environments. ANC can make speech, engines and air-conditioning less distracting and may let you listen at a lower volume.
The WF-C710N also has an ambient-sound mode. That is useful when you need awareness of announcements, traffic or a colleague without removing an earbud. Switching between ANC and ambient sound changes battery consumption, so your runtime depends on which mode you leave enabled.
When the WF-C510 is the better fit
Choose the WF-C510 when you mainly listen at home, in a quiet office or outdoors where passive isolation and ambient awareness are enough. It keeps the features Sony lists for everyday convenience without adding an ANC mode you may rarely use. Its maximum single-charge claim is also longer than the WF-C710N’s when the latter is operating with ANC enabled.
Do not assume the WF-C510 can be upgraded to ANC through an app. Sony lists ambient sound for the WF-C510 and active noise canceling for the WF-C710N as separate model features.
Understand the battery numbers before comparing them
WF-C510 figures
Sony rates the WF-C510 for up to 8 hours with ambient sound mode on and up to 11 hours with ambient sound mode off. Those are earbud figures for a charge, not a case-inclusive total. The cited specifications do not provide a comparable total-hours figure for the charging case.
WF-C710N figures
Sony rates the WF-C710N for up to 8.5 hours per charge with noise canceling on and up to 12 hours with noise canceling off. Including recharges from the case, Sony states up to 30 hours with ANC on and up to 40 hours with ANC off.
The difference is easy to misread. Turning ANC off adds as much as 3.5 hours to the WF-C710N’s per-charge claim, and the case-inclusive maximum changes by 10 hours. If you commute for several hours each day with ANC enabled, use the 8.5-hour figure as your planning ceiling rather than the 12-hour or 40-hour figures.
Why your result can be lower
- Higher listening volume generally uses more power.
- Phone calls can consume power differently from music playback.
- ANC or ambient sound left on changes the published mode.
- Wireless radio conditions, temperature and storage habits affect runtime.
- Battery capacity and performance change as the earbuds age.
Use the manufacturer figures to compare modes, not to promise a fixed number of hours. If you need a full workday from one charge, compare your expected listening and call schedule with the mode-specific maximum and leave a margin.
Check multipoint against your actual devices
Both models list multipoint, which is the feature to look for if you switch between a phone and a laptop. In a compatible setup, the earbuds can maintain relationships with two devices so you do not have to open Bluetooth settings every time you move from a video call to music on your phone.
Multipoint is not a guarantee that every device combination will switch identically. Sony cautions that interoperability varies. Before buying, check the operating-system versions on your phone and computer, confirm that both devices support the expected Bluetooth behavior, and read Sony’s current compatibility information in the support material for the exact model.
A practical multipoint check
- Write down the two devices you will use most, such as an Android phone and a Windows laptop, an iPhone and a Mac, or a phone and a tablet.
- Confirm that Bluetooth is enabled and that neither device is restricted by an enterprise profile, outdated operating system or manufacturer-specific Bluetooth limitation.
- After purchase, pair the earbuds with the first device, then pair them with the second using Sony’s documented process.
- Test a real handoff: play audio on the laptop, answer a call on the phone, end the call and resume laptop audio. A successful pairing alone does not prove that this switching pattern works for your devices.
If multipoint behavior is unreliable, disconnecting one device before starting the other is the usual fallback. That is slower, but it avoids assuming that the earbuds or your phone are defective when the limitation is interoperability.
Know what IPX4 permits for workouts
IPX4 is splash protection. It is appropriate for light sweat and everyday splashes, but it is not an immersion rating and does not make the earbuds waterproof. Do not swim with them, submerge them, rinse them under a tap or expose them to a shower stream.
Sony specifically says the WF-C710N charging case is not water resistant. Keep that case dry even when the earbuds have been used for a light workout, and dry the earbuds before placing them back inside. The published WF-C510 specification lists IPX4 for the earbuds; it does not establish a water-resistance rating for its case.
Workout decision
- For walking, gym sessions and light sweat, IPX4 is the relevant protection level.
- For heavy rain, water sports or activities involving immersion, choose equipment with an appropriate higher rating instead.
- After exercise, wipe moisture from the earbuds and charging contacts before storage.
Fit and comfort require a physical check
Sony supplies hybrid silicone ear tips with both models. A correct seal affects comfort, bass response and passive noise isolation, while an overly tight tip can become uncomfortable during a long session. Start with the supplied sizes rather than ordering replacements immediately.
Rank #2

Fit procedure
- Try the supplied tip size that sits securely without pressure.
- Play familiar speech or music and compare left and right balance; a weak bass response often indicates a poor seal.
- Walk, turn your head and open your jaw to see whether either earbud loosens.
- Test comfort for at least the length of a typical listening session before deciding that the shape works for you.
- Only then consider replacement tips, and verify the exact model and tip dimensions before purchasing.
There is no universal comfort result. Ear shape, tip size and how deeply you insert the earbuds determine whether either model remains comfortable for hours.

Music playback and voice calls place different demands on earbuds. The WF-C710N’s Sony materials identify dual microphones, which is relevant if calls in noisy places are a priority. The cited WF-C510 specifications establish ambient sound, but they do not provide a comparable microphone-performance measurement.
No published specification can guarantee how your voice will sound to every caller. Test calls in the places where you actually work: a quiet room, a street and a shared office. Listen for dropouts, wind noise and whether the other person can understand you while multipoint is active.
Check codec and device compatibility
Both earbuds use Bluetooth 5.3 and support the SBC and AAC codecs. That covers the standard Bluetooth audio paths used by many phones, tablets and computers, but neither model’s cited specification lists a higher-bandwidth codec.
Codec choice is negotiated by the source device and the earbuds. A phone may use AAC while a computer uses SBC, and operating-system settings can affect the result. If you have a device that requires a particular proprietary codec, verify compatibility before buying rather than assuming Bluetooth 5.3 guarantees it.

Plan for app controls and firmware updates
Sony’s support record matters because advertised controls and compatibility can depend on current software. For the WF-C710N, Sony lists firmware version 1.0.5, released November 26, 2025, and Sound Connect information dated May 25, 2026. Check the support page for your exact model and region after purchase, install the current app, and look for a firmware update before judging the earbuds.
Update checklist
- Install Sony Sound Connect from your device’s official app store.
- Pair the earbuds and allow the app to identify the exact model.
- Check the displayed firmware version against Sony’s current support entry.
- Charge the earbuds and case sufficiently before starting an update, and keep the phone nearby until it finishes.
- Review the app’s noise-control, ambient-sound and button-assignment settings after updating.
App availability and feature behavior can vary by phone, operating system and region. Do not assume every setting shown in a product description will appear on an unsupported device.
Compare current prices without relying on an old list price
No fixed retail price, stock status or regional warranty was established for this comparison. Prices change by country, retailer, color and promotion, so check the current price for the exact model and seller at the time you buy.
Use the price difference to value the feature you will actually use. If you never need ANC, paying more for the WF-C710N may buy little practical benefit. If you commute daily and would otherwise buy separate noise-isolating equipment, the WF-C710N’s ANC and ambient modes may justify its premium. Include the cost and availability of replacement ear tips, the return policy and regional warranty in that calculation.
Use this pre-purchase checklist
- Define the environment: list your main listening places and decide whether engine, office or street noise requires ANC.
- Choose the battery mode: compare the WF-C510’s 8-hour ambient-on and 11-hour ambient-off figures with the WF-C710N’s 8.5-hour ANC-on and 12-hour ANC-off figures.
- Check your two-device workflow: verify phone and laptop operating systems and plan a real multipoint handoff test.
- Set a water boundary: treat IPX4 as splash and light-sweat protection only, never immersion.
- Confirm fit expectations: make sure the included hybrid silicone tips and return policy give you a way to test comfort.
- Check calls: if calls are central, test microphone intelligibility in your normal environments; do not infer it from music specifications.
- Verify codecs: confirm that SBC/AAC meets the needs of your phone, computer and preferred services.
- Review software support: check Sony Sound Connect and the latest firmware entry for your region and model.
- Compare the live transaction: check current price, stock, seller, warranty and return terms rather than an archived listing.
Which model fits common buyers?
Choose WF-C510 when simplicity and runtime matter most
The WF-C510 is the sensible choice for listeners who want ambient awareness, multipoint and a long single-charge claim without ANC. Its up-to-11-hour ambient-off rating is the longest single-charge figure among these two models, and Bluetooth 5.3 with SBC/AAC covers ordinary phone and laptop use.
Choose WF-C710N when noise reduction is the priority
The WF-C710N is the step-up model for people who will regularly use ANC. It retains ambient sound and multipoint, adds the documented noise-canceling mode and offers up to 8.5 hours per charge with ANC on, or up to 12 hours with it off. Its case-inclusive maximum is up to 30 hours with ANC on and up to 40 hours with ANC off.
Pause if your needs exceed the specifications
Reconsider both models if you need immersion protection, a codec beyond SBC/AAC, a guaranteed microphone result in difficult wind or a universally reliable multipoint experience across untested devices. Those requirements are not established by the listed specifications and need separate verification.
What the specifications cannot tell you
Sony’s figures establish the feature set and maximum battery claims, but they do not predict every owner’s comfort, ANC impression or call quality. Ear anatomy changes the seal; volume and radio conditions change runtime; and phone or computer software changes multipoint behavior. Treat hands-on fit, a return window and a real-device test as part of the buying decision, especially when the earbuds will be used for long calls or daily commuting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSony describes the WF-C710N as “the ultimate everyday audio essential with optimal noise canceling abilities.” That is a positioning statement, not a substitute for checking whether its ANC mode, battery trade-off, fit and device compatibility match your routine.
