Before paying, verify five things on the exact listing: who is selling it, what condition the specific unit is in, what is included, which warranty and return terms apply, and how you can recover your money if the item is misrepresented. “Refurbished” and “open-box” are useful descriptions, not universal standards. Treat every offer as a separate transaction and save the evidence that supports your decision.
The 12-point pre-purchase checklist
Use this checklist on the product page, seller profile, checkout screen and policy pages. Do not rely on a search-result badge or a headline discount.
- Identify the actual seller. Determine whether the retailer, a refurbisher, a manufacturer, or an independent marketplace seller will ship and support the item.
- Read recent seller feedback. Look for comments about condition accuracy, missing accessories, battery health, shipping and warranty handling rather than relying only on a star average.
- Match the exact item. Confirm model number, generation, storage, memory, radio bands, plug type, size, color and compatibility with your equipment.
- Read the condition description. Find out whether the unit was tested, repaired, cleaned, graded or merely returned.
- Inspect the photos. Establish whether they show the actual unit or generic stock images, and note every disclosed scratch, dent, mark or missing part.
- List what is included. Check for the correct charger, cables, remote, battery, stand, mounting hardware, manuals, adapters and original or substitute packaging.
- Obtain written warranty terms. Confirm the provider, duration, covered failures, exclusions, claim process and who pays shipping.
- Calculate the return deadline. Record when the window starts, the final date, shipping responsibility, restocking fees and non-returnable conditions.
- Check marketplace protection. Verify that the protection covers this particular item and seller, and note the claim deadline.
- Calculate the delivered cost. Include shipping, taxes, marketplace fees, replacement accessories and any likely service cost.
- Use a payment method with recourse. Pay through the marketplace or another method that may allow a dispute; never follow a request to pay outside the platform.
- Save the record. Keep the listing, photos, condition notes, policy pages, messages, receipt, tracking number and deadlines before the page changes.
Find out who is responsible for the transaction
Separate the platform from the seller
A marketplace may display the offer without being the seller, shipper or warranty provider. On the listing and checkout page, look for labels such as “sold by,” “fulfilled by,” “provided by” and “ships from.” The company named on the invoice is usually the best starting point for a return or warranty claim, but the marketplace’s own protection can have separate eligibility rules.
The Federal Trade Commission’s November 2024 guidance, Buying From an Online Marketplace, advises checking the individual seller’s identity, contact information and recent feedback. It also warns that marketplace assistance with refunds varies, and that deadlines for claims can be short. If a seller will not answer basic questions about condition or returns, the FTC’s practical advice is simple: choose a different seller.

Check more than a star score
- Read the newest reviews and reviews for the same product category.
- Search feedback for “not as described,” “missing,” “battery,” “warranty,” “return” and “counterfeit.”
- Check whether the seller has a real business name, address and working contact channel.
- Look for a consistent history rather than a sudden cluster of generic five-star comments.
- Confirm that the seller’s stated return address and procedure are practical for your country.
Interpret condition labels cautiously
“Open-box,” “refurbished,” “renewed,” “pre-owned,” “used” and letter grades do not have one industry-wide definition. The seller’s written explanation controls. Ask what happened to this unit, what was tested, what was replaced and what remains cosmetically imperfect.
What one retailer’s grades illustrate
Best Buy’s outlet guidance is a retailer-specific example, not a universal grading standard. It describes open-box products as customer returns, including some display units, that were tested or inspected for working order and physical appearance. Its guide uses these grades:

Best Buy separately describes refurbished products as repaired and restored to a like-new state with essential parts and accessories; those parts may be original or comparable substitutes. Its pre-owned category can include items used for weeks, months or longer and may not contain every part. These definitions describe Best Buy’s own categories. Another retailer can use the same word differently.

Questions that turn a label into usable information
- Was the device powered on and tested through its main functions?
- Was it repaired, and if so, which components were replaced?
- Are water resistance, seals, calibration or safety certifications still valid?
- Which cosmetic defects are present, and are they visible in the listing photos?
- Is the serial number intact and eligible for manufacturer service?
- Does “complete” mean original accessories, compatible substitutes or only the essentials?
Confirm the exact model and compatibility
A low price is irrelevant if the unit is the wrong regional or technical variant. Copy the complete model and part number into the manufacturer’s support page, then compare the listing with your requirements.
- Computers and phones: verify processor generation, memory, storage type and capacity, cellular bands, carrier status, keyboard layout, operating-system support and port selection.
- Monitors and televisions: check screen size, resolution, refresh rate, input standards, power requirements and mounting pattern.
- Cameras and lenses: confirm mount, sensor format, autofocus compatibility, shutter count disclosure and included caps or batteries.
- Networking equipment: check regional firmware, modem or router standards, subscription requirements and whether the serial number can be registered.
- Appliances and tools: verify voltage, plug, dimensions, included attachments, consumables and safety recalls.
- Parts: match the manufacturer part number and revision, not merely a product name or photograph.
Ask the seller to confirm compatibility in writing when the listing is ambiguous. A written answer can support a “not as described” claim; an assumption cannot.

Inspect photos and disclosed defects
Actual-unit photos versus stock images
Stock images can show the model but cannot establish the condition of your unit. Look for photographs of the serial-number area, front and back, corners, ports, screen while powered on, included accessories and any defect mentioned in the description. If only catalog images appear, ask for current photos or treat the cosmetic condition as unknown.
Translate cosmetic language
Terms such as “light wear,” “minor marks” and “as-is cosmetic condition” are subjective. Ask where the marks are, how large they are, whether they affect a display or lens, and whether the item has dents, cracks, dead pixels, burn-in, discoloration or smoke odor. A scratch that is harmless on a case can be unacceptable on an optical surface or a sealed appliance.
Watch for inconsistencies
- The title says one storage capacity while the specifications show another.
- The photos show an original charger but the text says accessories vary.
- The grade is “excellent” while the description discloses a cracked panel or missing stand.
- The serial number, color or port layout differs between photographs and specifications.
- The seller copies identical condition text across many unrelated listings.
Check every included accessory
Missing accessories can erase a discount. Make a list of everything needed to use the product on day one and compare it with the listing’s “included” and “not included” sections. For electronics, this may include the manufacturer charger with the correct wattage, USB or display cables, remote, battery, stylus, docking adapter and proprietary connectors. For appliances and tools, include trays, guards, blades, hoses, brackets, keys and safety parts.
“Compatible” does not always mean equivalent. A substitute power adapter must match voltage, current, polarity and connector dimensions. A third-party battery can affect runtime, firmware recognition or safety. Price each missing item from a reputable source before deciding that the headline discount is real.
Evaluate testing, repair and data handling
A credible refurbisher should be able to describe its inspection or repair process at a useful level. “Tested” is not the same as “tested every function.” Ask which functions were checked, whether diagnostics were run, whether parts were replaced and whether the unit was reset securely.

Product-specific technical checks
- Battery-powered devices: request battery-health information, cycle count or a minimum-capacity policy if available. Battery condition is often a separate issue from cosmetic grade.
- Displays: ask about dead pixels, burn-in, backlight uniformity and maximum brightness.
- Storage devices: ask whether drive health was checked and whether the drive was securely erased before resale.
- Printers: check page count, printhead condition, ink or toner availability and whether cartridges are included.
- Cameras: ask about sensor dust, lens haze, autofocus, stabilization and shutter count.
- Game consoles and controllers: check disc drives, ports, sticks, wireless pairing and account removal.
Never assume a factory reset proves that personal data was securely erased. If you buy the item, perform your own reset, change credentials and remove any previous account before connecting sensitive services.

A warranty is a promise about specified defects; it is not the same as a return right or marketplace dispute. Identify who provides it: the manufacturer, retailer, refurbisher or a third-party administrator. Then read the written terms for:
- coverage duration and the date it begins;
- parts, labor, battery and screen coverage;
- exclusions for cosmetic damage, wear items, liquid, accidental damage, unauthorized repair or consumables;
- replacement, repair, refund or credit remedies;
- shipping, diagnostic and restocking charges;
- claim documents, turnaround time and the service address.
The Federal Trade Commission’s Businessperson’s Guide to Federal Warranty Law explains that written warranties on covered consumer products costing more than $15 must be available before purchase. Obtain the actual terms rather than assuming a refurbished product retains the warranty supplied with a new one. A retailer may offer a different warranty for open-box, refurbished and pre-owned inventory.
Separate return rights from warranty and marketplace protection
These three protections solve different problems:

Calculate the return window precisely
Write down the delivery date, the first eligible return date, the final date, and the required shipping method. Some policies count calendar days; others use business days. Check whether opened packaging, activated devices, software, hygiene products, custom items or damaged packaging are excluded. Save the policy shown at checkout because dynamic policies can change.
Best Buy’s published policy illustrates why this detail matters: it says the return period starts when the product is received and covers open-box, refurbished and pre-owned purchases sold by Best Buy, while listing distinct periods for most products and activatable devices, exclusions, restocking fees and different treatment for some Marketplace purchases. The stated periods are 15 days for most standard purchases and 14 days for activatable devices under that policy; terms can change and do not automatically apply to another seller.

Compare the real cost of competing offers
Compare listings on the same seven axes, not on discount percentage alone:

There is no reliable general statistic in the available guidance establishing an average failure rate or average saving for refurbished products. Make the decision from the terms and evidence attached to the specific offer.

The FTC recommends paying through the marketplace and using a safer method such as a credit card when possible. Do not send money by bank transfer, gift card, cryptocurrency or a separate payment link because a seller promises a lower price. An off-platform transaction can remove marketplace protection and make a dispute harder.
Before checkout, save a PDF or screenshots of the complete listing, seller name, photographs, condition grade, included items, warranty, return policy, shipping promise and all written answers. Keep the order confirmation, tracking record and packaging photos. If the item is wrong or damaged, communicate through the platform, describe the discrepancy precisely and meet the stated claim deadline.

Amazon Renewed
Amazon’s US seller condition guidance describes Renewed products as pre-owned items inspected and tested by Amazon or a qualified supplier. It states a 90-day replacement or refund guarantee when a product does not work as expected. That is a description of the Renewed program, not a guarantee for every used or open-box listing on Amazon. Check the individual product page for eligibility, exceptions, seller identity and the exact claim procedure.

Best Buy Outlet categories
Best Buy publishes definitions for its open-box, refurbished and pre-owned categories and a separate return policy. Those documents demonstrate the useful level of detail a retailer may provide, but the listing’s exceptions still control. A product sold by a Marketplace seller can have different terms from one sold directly by Best Buy.
Inspect the item immediately after delivery
Do not wait until the last day of the return window to discover a missing part. Follow this sequence while the packaging and shipping label are available:
- Photograph the unopened package, shipping label, seals and any impact damage.
- Record the serial number and compare it with the listing and invoice.
- Photograph the item from all sides before removing protective film or disposing of packaging.
- Inventory every accessory against the saved listing.
- Check for cracks, dents, bent ports, dead pixels, unusual noise, smoke odor or liquid indicators.
- Power it on without entering sensitive information, confirm the model and run the functions relevant to your use.
- Test charging, connectivity, storage, cameras, buttons, speakers, displays and included attachments as applicable.
- Check battery health or other product-specific diagnostics when the manufacturer provides them.
- Reset the device, update firmware and remove any previous account before normal use.
- If it is materially different, stop using it, preserve the packaging and open the return or marketplace claim immediately.
Keep a dated record of defects and take clear photographs or video. Do not attempt an unauthorized repair before deciding whether to return it; that can complicate a warranty or “not as described” claim.

- The seller will not identify the actual condition, model or warranty provider.
- The listing uses only stock photos for an item whose cosmetic condition is central to the purchase.
- The price is available only if you pay outside the marketplace.
- The description promises a warranty but provides no written terms before payment.
- The seller says returns are possible but will not state the deadline, address or shipping responsibility.
- The serial number is obscured, altered or inconsistent with the photographs.
- Important accessories, battery health or regional compatibility are “random” without a price adjustment.
- The listing combines several models or grades under one page so the delivered configuration is unclear.
- Pressure to buy immediately prevents you from saving the listing or asking questions.
A practical decision rule
Buy only when you can answer all of these questions in writing:
- Who is selling and supporting the exact unit?
- What model and configuration will arrive?
- What was inspected, repaired or replaced?
- Which flaws and missing items are disclosed?
- What is included, and what will replacements cost?
- Who provides the warranty, for how long and with what exclusions?
- What is the final return date, and what will a return cost?
- Does marketplace protection apply to this seller and item?
- Can you pay with recourse and preserve the listing evidence?
If any answer is unknown, price that uncertainty as a risk. A modest discount with clear condition, complete accessories and usable recourse can be a better purchase than a larger discount attached to vague grading, a short return window or an unreachable seller.
