Before paying, verify the exact item and seller, calculate the full delivered cost, read the return and warranty terms, and choose a payment method with recourse. For appliances, also measure the installation space and compare energy-use information where available. Marketplace rules and U.S. consumer protections vary by seller, product, and transaction, so check the terms that apply to the specific listing.
1. Verify the seller and the marketplace protection
A marketplace may only connect buyers and sellers; it may not handle a dispute over payment, delivery, returns, or refunds. Other marketplaces offer complaint or refund processes, but eligibility can depend on the seller, item, and claim deadline. Read the current policy for the specific listing before checkout, and keep payment on the marketplace if you are relying on its protections. FTC online-shopping guidance
- Identify the actual seller, not just the marketplace name. Check its contact details and recent feedback from more than one source.
- Look beyond star ratings. The FTC cautions that positive and negative reviews can be fake, and incentives behind reviews may not be obvious.
- Ask the seller any material questions before paying, such as whether an item is new, which accessories are included, or when it will ship. Save the written answer.
- Confirm what the marketplace will do if the item never arrives, differs from the listing, or is not eligible for return.
HTTPS encrypts information sent to a website; it does not prove that the website or seller is legitimate. Treat a secure connection as a basic security measure, not a trust credential. FTC guidance on online shopping
2. Make sure the listing describes the item you want
Match the manufacturer and model number, then compare specifications rather than relying on a broad product name. A similar-looking model can have different capacity, features, dimensions, or included components.
#1 Best Overall
- 13 ft. Of reach*: allows for easy measurements when working alone (*based on maximum extension of average professional user)
- Compact size: easy to grip and store in any tool belt
- Easy grip design: extensive rubber overmold provides a comfortable grip and impact resistance
- Easy read fractions: fractions printed on the blade in alternating colors and heights for quick, easy measurements
- Includes: (1) CMHT37443S Tape Measure
- Read the condition description carefully: new, used, refurbished, and “as is” have different implications.
- Check what is included and what is excluded, such as cables, remotes, installation hardware, or other accessories.
- For a used item, look for photos of the actual product. Stock images do not establish the item’s condition or even that the seller has it.
- Consider an unusually low price on an expensive branded product a reason to investigate possible fraud or counterfeiting before buying.
For quality signals, look for recurring, model-specific complaints across multiple independent expert and customer review sources. Pay attention to review recency and possible incentives; one glowing review or a high aggregate score does not establish product quality. FTC online-shopping guidance
3. Calculate the total cost and check the delivery promise
Compare the amount you will actually pay, not just the headline price. Add shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and other fees, and check whether a discount or clearance sale changes the return terms. The FTC recommends reviewing the full cost and conditions before ordering. FTC online-shopping guidance

Check the promised ship or delivery date and the consequences if the seller misses it. Under U.S. federal rules described in FTC consumer guidance, a seller must ship as promised in its advertising. If no shipping time is promised, the general deadline is 30 days after the seller receives your name, address, payment, or permission to charge you. If the seller cannot ship on time, FTC guidance describes a notice and a choice to accept the delay or cancel for a refund. This is U.S. federal guidance; state law and the transaction details may also matter. FTC online-shopping guidance FTC guidance on delayed or missing online orders
4. Read the return and refund terms before checkout
Find the return window and note when it starts. Check whether the item is eligible for a refund, whether you must pay return shipping, and whether the seller charges a restocking fee. Confirm the process for starting a return and whether sale or clearance goods follow different terms. These details can differ between listings on the same marketplace. FTC online-shopping guidance

- Wide 3/4-inch blade with easy readability

5. Check appliance fit and likely operating cost
Measure the space and access
Measure the installation space before ordering. Include clearance for doors or lids to open fully and for safe ventilation; also consider whether the appliance can be brought through the route into the room. U.S. Department of Energy guidance on estimating appliance and home electronic energy use
Use EnergyGuide figures as comparisons, not promises
EnergyGuide labels help compare energy use among similar covered appliances. The FTC lists covered categories including boilers, ceiling fans, central air conditioners, clothes washers, dishwashers, freezers, furnaces, heat pumps, pool heaters, refrigerators, televisions, water heaters, and room and portable air conditioners. The label’s operating-cost estimate assumes typical use and national-average energy prices; your actual cost depends on local rates and how you use the appliance. If the listing does not show a label, the FTC advises checking inside the appliance or on the seller’s or manufacturer’s website. FTC explanation of the EnergyGuide label

- QUICK & EASY MEASUREMENTS: Fractions printed on the blade
- ADDED GRIP: Rubber overmold for added grip
ENERGY STAR is a separate efficiency label, with qualifying guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Use it alongside model-specific details rather than treating it as a substitute for checking fit, features, or cost. FTC explanation of the EnergyGuide label

For major products such as home appliances, FTC guidance says the written warranty must be available before purchase, including for online sales. Read it before ordering and check:

Credit cards provide dispute rights in several common situations, such as a duplicate charge or goods that were never delivered. Contact your card issuer promptly and follow its instructions. Some secure payment systems also offer buyer protections; check their terms before relying on them. Avoid unusual demands for gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or other difficult-to-reverse payments. Do not pay outside a marketplace if that would void its protections. Keep records that will help if the item is late, incorrect, damaged, or disputed:
