Before paying for electronics online, verify the exact item and seller, compare the full delivered cost, read the delivery and return terms, and choose a payment method with a way to challenge certain charges. This checklist uses U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) consumer guidance; consumer rights and payment protections differ by jurisdiction.
1. Confirm exactly what the listing includes
Start with the item’s precise model or version, not just its product name or a photo. Compare the listing with the features you need, including storage, connectivity, regional compatibility, and power requirements. These are practical checks for matching an electronics item to your setup.
Read the condition description carefully. A listing marked new, used, refurbished, open-box, or “as is” may come with different expectations. Check which accessories and components are included, and whether the photos show the actual item or a representative image. A very low price for an expensive device can be a warning sign, including the possibility of a counterfeit. See the FTC’s marketplace buying guidance.

For a seller you do not know, search the seller or site name alongside terms such as “review,” “complaint,” or “scam.” Look at recent feedback from more than one source and check for clear contact information and understandable terms. Do not rely on star ratings alone: ratings and reviews can be misleading or fake. The FTC recommends checking unfamiliar sellers and reviews in its advice on what to do when online shopping goes wrong.

If the item is sold through a marketplace, read the marketplace’s buyer-protection rules as well as the seller’s own policy. Protection may apply only to qualifying purchases and may require you to file a claim by a deadline. Keep checkout within the marketplace if you expect its protections to apply; paying the seller separately can put those protections at risk.
Look for “https” in the address before entering payment details, but do not treat it as proof that the seller is trustworthy. HTTPS encrypts the connection; a scam site can use it too. The FTC explains this distinction in its marketplace guidance.

3. Compare the total delivered cost
Compare listings for the same model, condition, and included items. Add shipping, handling, and any stated add-ons to the displayed price before deciding which offer is cheaper. Comparison prices may omit these costs; the FTC’s online-shopping advice recommends checking the total cost.

If one seller’s price is unusually low for an expensive item, investigate the seller and listing rather than assuming the offer is simply a bargain.

4. Read delivery, return, and refund terms before checkout
Find the promised shipping or arrival window and save it. Check the return deadline, refund method, who pays return shipping, whether a restocking fee applies, and whether sale items have stricter terms. The return policy and delivery promise should be clear enough for you to understand what happens if the item arrives late, is not as described, or does not work for your needs.
Save the listing and its terms, order confirmation, receipt, and messages with the seller. Policies and promised dates can change or become harder to find after purchase; keeping a copy gives you a record of what you agreed to.

5. Understand warranty coverage and optional plans
Read the written warranty terms before buying. Identify who backs the warranty, what it covers, its exclusions, how service or repair is requested, and where the item must be sent. If you are offered an optional protection plan, check what it adds and whether it overlaps coverage you already have.

Warranty rights and rules vary by location and product. The FTC materials cited here do not establish one current warranty rule that applies to every electronics purchase, so check the terms and the rules for your jurisdiction rather than assuming every item has the same coverage.

6. Choose a payment method with a route to resolve problems
The FTC recommends paying by credit card when possible because you may be able to dispute certain charges. That does not guarantee a refund: protections, eligibility, and dispute deadlines depend on the card issuer, the circumstances, and applicable rules. Check with the issuer promptly if a charge or delivery becomes a problem.
Avoid gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or payment outside a marketplace when those methods remove a route to dispute the payment or cost you marketplace protections. Payment methods do not all offer the same remedies.
7. If something goes wrong after purchase
- Gather your records. Keep the listing, order confirmation, receipt, delivery details, and correspondence with the seller.
- Contact the seller promptly. Explain what happened and what resolution you are seeking; keep a copy of the exchange.
- Check the relevant deadlines. Review the marketplace claim process, if applicable, and contact your card issuer or payment provider promptly to ask about dispute options and time limits. These vary by payment method and jurisdiction.
FTC-received reports ranked online shopping scams as the second-most reported type of scam in 2022, according to the FTC’s 2023 consumer advice.
