A low price is not proof of a bargain or a counterfeit. Before paying, confirm that the accessory is the right model, electrically compatible with your device, certified for your country and product type, sold by a traceable merchant, and in a condition you can safely use. The checks below turn those questions into a repeatable buying process.
Start with the exact accessory and device
“USB-C charger,” “phone cable,” or “laptop adapter” describes a category, not a guaranteed match. Write down the accessory you need and the device it must serve before comparing discounts. Record the device model, connector, input requirements, and any manufacturer-specific certification requirement. A connector that fits can still deliver the wrong voltage, fail to support the required charging mode, or be intended for a different generation of device.
Record the device details
- Model: Include the complete model number, not only the product family name.
- Connector: Note whether the device uses USB-C, Lightning, a barrel connector, or another interface. For USB-C, identify whether the port is used for charging, data, video, or all three.
- Electrical input: Find the voltage and current requirements on the original adapter, the device label, or the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Special requirements: Some devices require a particular charging protocol, cable capability, or approved accessory program.
Health Canada’s online-buying guidance uses a simple electrical example: a 19-volt laptop requires a charger that provides 19 volts. Do not infer electrical compatibility from a plug’s shape or from a listing headline such as “universal” or “fast charging.”
Separate a cable from a power supply
A cable mainly carries power and, depending on its construction, data or video. A wall charger converts mains electricity and has its own output ratings and safety obligations. A USB-C cable can fit both a phone and a laptop while lacking the conductors or rating needed for the laptop’s power or display mode. Evaluate each component separately, even when a listing sells them as a bundle.

Match voltage, current and charging capability
For any wall-powered charger or adapter, compare the output printed on the accessory with the device’s required input. Voltage is the non-negotiable starting point. Current and power determine whether the device can charge at its intended rate. A charger with a higher maximum current may be acceptable when its voltage and charging protocol are correct; a charger that supplies the wrong voltage is not made safe by a matching connector.
Read the label, not just the headline
Look for an output panel showing values such as volts (V), amps (A) and, where provided, watts (W). Multi-port chargers may list a maximum for one port and a lower combined output when several ports are used. Check the specification for the port you will actually use. If the listing omits output values, asks you to rely on a stock photograph, or gives contradictory numbers in different sections, pause the purchase and request clarification.
Check the device’s real requirement
Use the original charger, the device label, or the manufacturer’s current support documentation as your reference. For a replacement laptop adapter, match the required voltage and connector polarity as well as the current rating. For USB-C Power Delivery equipment, verify that the charger and cable both support the power level your device accepts; “USB-C” alone does not establish that capability.

Certification is local and product-specific. A mark that is meaningful in one country or for one class of product does not automatically satisfy another jurisdiction’s rules. Check the electrical-safety requirements where you will plug in the accessory and apply the requirement to the actual product, not merely its retail packaging.
Wall-powered products in Canada
Health Canada says: “Do not buy electrical products that plug into a power outlet without a Canadian electrical certification mark, such as CSA, cUL, or cETL.” That statement applies to products used in Canada. The agency says the mark should appear on the product itself. A listing that shows a mark only on a box, or provides no clear product photograph, warrants a question to the seller and independent verification.

Other countries and regions
Readers outside Canada should identify the electrical mark and registration system required in their own country. Do not copy the Canadian examples as a universal checklist. A legitimate accessory may carry several marks for the markets in which it is sold, but the presence of a familiar-looking logo is not proof that the item was tested or that the mark belongs to that product. When a national regulator or standards body provides a searchable database, use the model and manufacturer information from the item rather than accepting a generic logo image.
USB Type-C cable certification
USB-IF describes a certification program for eligible USB Type-C cable assemblies. Its guidance says the program’s logo must be on the cable and that the cable is verified through testing by a test laboratory. This is not a rule that every USB-C cable must carry the logo, nor is it a universal certification for wall chargers, hubs or other accessories. If a seller invokes USB-IF certification, confirm that the claim concerns the cable assembly being sold and that its advertised capabilities match the tested product.

Apple’s guidance for Lightning accessories recommends products carrying the MFi badge and gives buyers physical details to inspect on the packaging and connector. MFi is relevant to Lightning accessories; it should not be presented as a general safety certification for every charger or cable. Treat a badge as a claim to verify alongside the seller, model and condition checks.
Assess the seller and the listing
A discount is easier to evaluate when you know who is responsible for the item. Prefer a manufacturer or a clearly identified, reputable outlet when practical. INTERPOL’s guidance on fake electrical devices and UL Research Institutes’ safe-shopping advice both emphasize traceable sellers, national safety requirements and careful examination of branding and packaging.
Seller checks
- Confirm the legal or trading name, physical or mailing address, customer-service contact and return process.
- Check whether the listing identifies the actual manufacturer, model number and electrical specifications.
- Look for a consistent history of selling the same category of goods rather than a newly created storefront with unrelated products.
- Read the terms for defective, used and opened items; a return policy is useful only if the seller can be reached and the policy covers the risk you are taking.
Listing and photo checks
- Compare the photographs with the manufacturer’s published appearance, including port layout, labels and plug shape.
- Zoom in on printing. Blurred text, misspellings, discolored ink, inconsistent fonts or a certification mark that appears only in a box photo are warning signs.
- Check that the model and ratings in the description agree with the label shown in the photographs.
- Ask for a photograph of the actual unit when the listing uses only catalogue images, especially for a used or open-box item.
INTERPOL identifies unusually low prices, unfamiliar sellers, poor or unusual packaging, blurred or discolored printing and missing certification labels as warning signs. None proves that an item is counterfeit by itself. Together, they justify stopping to verify the product before paying.

Use the size of the discount as a reason to investigate
There is no reliable percentage at which a discount becomes counterfeit. Legitimate clearance, an older model, damaged packaging or a short promotion can all reduce a price. Conversely, an extreme price gap can indicate a copied product, a missing accessory or a listing that will not deliver the described model.

Compare the discounted offer with credible prices for the same model and condition, then account for what is included, shipping, taxes, return rights and seller identity. The reviewed safety guidance does not establish a standardized formula for “deal quality,” so do not turn a price difference into a numerical safety score. The practical question is whether the savings remain worthwhile after you have confirmed specifications and retained a realistic remedy if the item is defective.
Check used, refurbished and open-box accessories differently
Second-hand electrical accessories carry an unknown history. “Like new” describes appearance, not insulation, connector stress, liquid exposure or previous overheating. Health Canada advises asking a trusted seller about condition, age, history and certification, inspecting photographs for damage or wear, and checking government recall and safety-alert databases.
Questions for the seller
- How old is the item, and when was it first put into service?
- Was it used in a home, office, vehicle or another environment?
- Has it been repaired, modified, exposed to liquid or subjected to heat?
- Is the original label, plug, cable and packaging present?
- What certification mark is on the product, and can you provide a clear photograph?
- What is the model or serial number, and has it been checked against recalls?
Physical evidence to inspect
- Look for cracked housings, bent prongs, exposed conductors, frayed insulation, loose strain reliefs, scorch marks or corrosion.
- Inspect ports for debris, bent contacts and foreign objects. Samsung’s charging precautions specifically advise checking wired connectors for foreign material.
- Check that labels are firmly attached and legible rather than covered by a replacement sticker.
- Do not rely on an online photograph to rule out internal damage or previous misuse.
Search the relevant government recall and safety-alert database by the product name and model before using a used accessory. If the seller cannot provide a model, history or return option, the uncertainty may outweigh the discount.
Apply brand-specific guidance without overgeneralizing it
Manufacturers sometimes publish warnings for a connector or device family. Use those instructions for the products they cover, not as proof that every third-party accessory is unsafe.

Lightning devices
Apple warns that counterfeit or uncertified Lightning accessories may fail to charge or sync, fit poorly, become hot or damage a device. Inspect the connector and packaging details described in Apple’s MFi guidance, then still verify the seller and the item’s condition. MFi addresses Lightning accessories; it does not certify a generic USB-C charger.
Samsung smartphones
Samsung’s charging precautions caution users about uncertified charging accessories and recommend checking wired connectors for foreign objects. This is manufacturer-specific advice. Use it as an additional inspection step when buying a Samsung-compatible accessory, while relying on the accessory’s own electrical ratings and the safety requirements in your country for the primary decision.
A repeatable pre-purchase workflow
Use this sequence for a new, discounted, used or refurbished accessory. Stop at any step where the evidence is missing rather than filling the gap with assumptions.
- Define the job. Write the device model, connector, required voltage, current or power, and any data or video function you need.
- Identify the exact item. Capture the manufacturer, full model number, included components and condition stated in the listing.
- Compare electrical specifications. Match the device’s input requirements to the charger or adapter output. Check per-port and combined ratings on multi-port products.
- Check applicable certification. Identify the national electrical mark required where you will use a wall-powered product. For a claimed USB-IF cable, confirm that the claim is for an eligible cable assembly; for a Lightning cable, inspect the MFi information.
- Examine seller evidence. Verify contact details, return terms, actual-unit photos and consistency between the label and the description.
- Investigate the discount. Compare the same model and condition elsewhere. Treat an unusually low price as a prompt for more verification.
- Check history and recalls. For used or older items, ask about age and prior use and search the relevant government database.
- Decide or walk away. Buy only when the remaining uncertainty is acceptable for a device connected to mains power or an expensive piece of equipment.
What to do when evidence is missing or contradictory
The listing has no certification photograph
Ask the seller for a sharp photograph of the mark on the product itself and for the complete model and manufacturer details. Packaging alone is not a substitute for the mark on a wall-powered product. If the seller refuses or cannot provide it, choose an item with verifiable information.

The voltage or current is unclear
Do not guess from wattage, connector shape or another buyer’s comment. Consult the device documentation and request the charger’s output table, including the port you intend to use. An unresolved voltage mismatch is a reason not to buy.

The photos and description disagree
Ask which physical unit will ship and request a photograph of its label. Save the listing and the seller’s response. If the model, rating, plug or included cable remains ambiguous, the apparent saving does not compensate for the compatibility risk.
The product arrives damaged or behaves abnormally
Do not continue charging to “see if it settles.” Unplug a unit that becomes unusually hot, emits an odor, sparks, makes a buzzing sound or shows damage. Photograph the condition, contact the seller through the documented return channel and report a suspected safety issue to the relevant regulator where appropriate.
Inspect the accessory when it arrives
A convincing listing does not eliminate the need for an arrival check. Before connecting the accessory to an expensive device, compare the delivered model, label, plug and included parts with the listing you saved. Check the housing, cable jacket, strain relief, pins and ports for cracks, looseness, corrosion or debris. Confirm that the certification mark is present on the product where it should be, not only on a leaflet or box.

Stop immediately if the accessory becomes abnormally hot, smells of burning plastic, produces noise, trips a breaker or causes the device to report an error. Normal warmth under load is not a license to ignore a sharp temperature rise or visible damage. Keep the receipt, photographs and model information in case a recall or return becomes necessary.
A specific counterfeit case shows why markings matter
On July 29, 2025, the UK Office for Product Safety and Standards reported that one counterfeit Apple-branded USB-C power adapter, model A1696, presented a serious risk of fire and electric shock because its plug pins did not meet dimensional requirements. This is a report about that specific model and incident, not a prevalence rate for discounted chargers. It demonstrates why a familiar logo, low price or intact box cannot replace inspection of the actual plug, certification and seller.
Comparison checklist for multiple discounted options
When two or more offers appear similar, compare the evidence rather than the headline discount.
