Before you buy, identify exactly what failed, stop using the affected card or drive, and verify support for your camera, file system, video format and operating system. Deleted footage, fragmented recordings and a corrupted video file are different problems. A utility that finds deleted files may not reconstruct a fragmented camera clip, while a repair tool may only make an already-recovered file playable. Also check that the edition you purchase includes imaging, video repair or RAID features if you need them, and always save recovered material to separate storage.

Start by classifying the loss

The failure mode determines which kind of software can help. Write down what happened before downloading or installing anything; installing software on the affected disk can overwrite the very data you are trying to recover.

Deleted files or an emptied card

Recovery software searches the storage for directory entries and file data that are no longer visible. This is the usual situation after accidental deletion or an in-camera “format” command. Success depends heavily on whether new footage or other files have overwritten the old data. A preview of a filename is not proof that the complete clip is intact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Formatted, repartitioned or missing volume

A deeper scan may find data after a quick format, a damaged partition table or a volume that no longer mounts. Look for software that explicitly lists formatted-volume or partition recovery, not only “undelete.” Do not create a new partition, reformat the card or run a repair that writes changes to the original media.

Fragmented camera footage

Large clips are often stored in many non-contiguous pieces. Ordinary file carving can locate fragments but may not know their correct order, so the result can be an unplayable or truncated file. Specialist tools such as Klennet Carver state support for fragmented MP4, MOV, AVI, MPEG-2/AVCHD (MTS), DAV and certain MXF variants, with a focus on digital-camera and dash-camera memory cards. Confirm that your exact camera’s codec and card layout are supported; a format name alone is not enough.

An existing file that will not play

Repair is different from recovery. If the clip is present but an index, header or metadata block is damaged, a video-repair utility may rebuild enough structure for a player or editor to open it. VidRepair documents repair approaches for selected MP4 and MOV containers and says a reference clip from the same camera and recording settings can help when an MP4 index is missing or incomplete. Repair cannot recreate bytes that were never recovered.

Physical media or storage failure

A cracked card, failed controller, water damage, a drive that is not detected, repeated read errors or a RAID hardware fault is not an ordinary software-recovery case. Sony states that physical damage to a card cannot be recovered by its Memory Card File Rescue utility; VidRepair likewise excludes physical device damage from its repair capability. Continuing to power-cycle a failing device can worsen the damage. Consider a professional recovery service when the footage is irreplaceable or the device itself is unstable.

Protect the original before you scan

  1. Stop recording and writing immediately. Remove the card from the camera, stop copying files to the affected drive and do not install recovery software on that same volume. New data can overwrite deleted video.
  2. Lock removable media. Panasonic’s AVCCAM instructions tell users to move the SD card’s physical write-protect switch before recovery. A locked card prevents accidental writes, although it does not repair an electrically damaged card.
  3. Use a reliable reader and a stable connection. Connect the card through a reader rather than repeatedly mounting it in a camera. If the device disconnects, stop and document the symptoms instead of repeatedly retrying scans.
  4. Create an image when the software supports it. A sector-by-sector image lets you work on a copy and preserve the original for another attempt or a specialist. Ontrack lists disk imaging in its Professional and higher workflows; verify the current edition and operating-system support before purchase.
  5. Save every result elsewhere. Use a separate physical drive or partition for recovered clips and image files. PhotoRec warns not to write recovered data to the source partition, and its documentation describes read-only access to the drive or card being examined.

Keep the original card or disk unchanged. If the first scan produces partial clips, you may need a different algorithm or a specialist, and that option is lost if the source is overwritten.

Check compatibility at the level that matters

Camera, card and filesystem

Record the camera model, card capacity and type (SD, microSD, CFexpress or another medium), filesystem (for example, exFAT or FAT32), and whether the card was used in another device. Sony’s Memory Card File Rescue documentation limits verified recovery to specified Sony media and lists supported Sony recording formats; that does not establish support for every third-party card or camera. Panasonic’s AVCCAM utility is a narrow, older tool for AVCCAM recordings on SD cards, not a general-purpose solution for modern cameras.

Container and codec

Distinguish the container from the codec. MP4, MOV, AVI, MTS and MXF describe containers; H.264, H.265/HEVC, AVCHD and XAVC describe encoding families. A product may recognize an MP4 structure but not the camera’s particular codec, fragmented layout or metadata. Ask the vendor whether your exact combination is supported, including audio and timecode tracks if they are important to the edit.

Operating system and hardware

Confirm Windows or macOS support, 64-bit requirements, available RAM and free space for a full image. Klennet Carver flags non-trivial system requirements, so check them before connecting a large card. A scan of a 1 TB drive can require at least that much destination capacity for an image plus additional room for recovered files.

Compatibility question What to verify Why it matters
Camera and card Exact camera model, card brand/type and capacity Some vendor utilities are restricted to their own camera media; card controllers and layouts vary.
Filesystem FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, APFS or another format Partition and directory recovery depends on filesystem structures.
Container and codec MP4/MOV/MTS/MXF plus H.264, H.265, AVCHD, XAVC or other codec Fragment reconstruction and repair are format-specific.
Source condition Recognized normally, intermittently detected or not detected Unstable or invisible hardware may require imaging or laboratory work rather than a normal scan.
Computer Supported Windows/macOS release, RAM, ports and destination capacity Large scans and images can fail when the host or destination runs out of resources.

Capability What it does Questions to ask before buying
File recovery Finds deleted or missing directory entries and file data Does it scan the filesystem, raw sectors, or both? Does it handle formatted volumes?
Fragmented-video recovery Reassembles pieces of a camera recording stored out of order Are my camera, codec, card and container explicitly listed?
Video repair Repairs a recovered file’s header, index or metadata so it can open Is repair included in my edition? Is a same-camera reference clip required?
Disk imaging Creates a working copy while minimizing reads from the original Can the image be paused and resumed, and does it handle bad sectors?
RAID recovery Reconstructs data across multiple disks and array layouts Which RAID levels and controller metadata are supported, and in which tier?

Ontrack EasyRecovery lists Windows and Mac support for internal and external drives, SSDs, RAID, USB devices and memory cards, but assigns key functions to different editions: its product information places video repair in Premium, disk imaging in Professional and RAID recovery in Technician. Treat those as vendor claims and verify current licensing, compatibility and commercial-use terms at checkout; an edition name or feature list can change.

Understand the main software approaches

General-purpose file carving

PhotoRec from CGSecurity is free, open-source and multi-platform. It searches underlying data rather than relying solely on the filesystem and supports hard drives, memory cards, USB drives and disk images. It is a sensible no-cost option when the card is readable and you need broad file recovery. Its documented general carving should not be presented as guaranteed recovery of fragmented or playable camera footage. PhotoRec’s own guidance is clear: “For more safety, PhotoRec uses read-only access to handle the drive or memory card you are about to recover lost data from.”

Camera-specific utilities

Sony Memory Card File Rescue lists MP4, XAVC S, AVCHD, MOV, MXF and XAVC HS among supported formats on eligible Sony media. It warns that some recovered files may not be playable, formatted media may not be recoverable and recovery of all data is not guaranteed. Sony’s documentation states, “We do not guarantee a recovery of all data.” Use such a utility when your camera and card match its stated support, not as a universal tool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Panasonic AVCCAM Recovery is an older, camera-specific example for AVCCAM recordings on SD cards. Its manual warns that recovery may fail, metadata can be lost, continuous recordings may be split and certain formatted cards cannot be recovered. Verify that your particular AVCCAM workflow and operating system are still supported before relying on it.

Fragmented-video specialists

Klennet Carver targets fragmented recordings and names MP4, MOV, AVI, MPEG-2/AVCHD (MTS), DAV and certain MXF variations. Its stated use cases include digital-camera and dash-camera memory cards. Because reconstruction depends on camera-specific patterns, compare the vendor’s format list with the camera manual and sample files from the same device.

File-repair tools

VidRepair describes repairs for selected containers and streams, including MP4/MOV. A short, healthy reference clip made with the same camera and settings can supply missing structural information. The tool’s documentation distinguishes repairable container faults from overwritten data and physical storage damage: neither deleted bytes that have been overwritten nor a failing device can be fixed by rebuilding an index.

Compare the workflow, not just the feature count

  • Read-only or non-modifying operation: The scan should not alter the source. Prefer a documented image-first workflow for valuable footage.
  • Resumable results: A large card can take hours to scan. Check whether scan state can be saved and reopened without starting over.
  • Preview quality: A preview should show actual frames and duration when possible. A filename, thumbnail or partial first frame does not prove an intact, editable clip.
  • Destination control: The program should let you choose a separate drive and preserve original filenames or folder structure when available.
  • Logging and filtering: Logs, file-type filters and size/date filters help you identify camera clips among thousands of carved fragments.
  • Edition boundaries: Confirm whether the trial can scan but not save, whether video repair is a paid add-on and whether a commercial-use license is required for client work.

A safe buying and recovery procedure

  1. Document the incident. Note the last known good recording, deletion or format action, camera settings, card capacity and any error messages.
  2. Quarantine the source. Remove the card, engage write protection and stop using the drive. Do not run “repair disk” tools that write changes.
  3. Choose the class of tool. Use general recovery for deleted files, a fragmented-video specialist for disordered camera fragments, and a repair utility only after you have a recovered but unplayable file.
  4. Verify exact support. Match camera, media, filesystem, container, codec and operating system against current vendor documentation. Ask support about your specific model if it is not listed.
  5. Prepare separate storage. Have enough free capacity for an image and recovered output. Never place either on the source partition.
  6. Image first when possible. Create and verify an image, then scan the image. If the source has bad sectors or disconnects, stop and consider professional help.
  7. Run a read-only scan. Save the scan state and avoid repeated scans that stress a failing device. Use file-type filters for the camera’s containers.
  8. Recover to the destination drive. Preserve the image and original. Organize results in a new folder and keep the software’s log with them.
  9. Validate the clips. Open copies in more than one player or editor, check duration and seek through the entire file, confirm audio and synchronization, and inspect the final section for truncation.
  10. Attempt repair on copies only. If a recovered file is unplayable, duplicate it and try the repair tool with a same-camera reference clip. Keep the untouched recovered file.

Know the limits and failure signals

Overwritten data

Once new recordings occupy the sectors containing deleted footage, software cannot reconstruct the old bytes. Continued use of a card after deletion is the most avoidable cause of failure. Stop immediately, even if the camera still shows an empty or healthy card.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Formatted media

A quick format may leave recoverable data, but a secure erase, repeated recording or certain camera-specific formatting processes can remove the structures a tool needs. Sony and Panasonic both state that recovery is not always possible; Panasonic specifically notes that some formatted cards cannot be recovered.

Partial, split or metadata-poor clips

Panasonic warns that continuous recordings may be split and metadata may be lost. A recovered clip can therefore play while lacking timecode, original naming or complete audio. Treat editorial metadata as a separate recovery objective and keep the card image in case a specialist can reconstruct it later.

Physical damage

If the card is cracked, hot, wet, electrically dead or repeatedly disconnects, software scans can make the situation worse. Do not open a drive, swap components or freeze media based on internet anecdotes. A professional laboratory is the appropriate escalation for high-value footage or unreadable hardware; the reviewed vendor documentation does not establish that any particular laboratory is superior.

When each option makes sense

Situation Most appropriate first choice Reason and caution
Accidentally deleted files on a readable card Read-only general recovery such as PhotoRec or a reputable commercial scanner Stop writes and save output elsewhere; fragmented clips may still be incomplete.
Card was formatted and camera footage is fragmented A specialist that explicitly supports the camera’s fragmented format Confirm codec, card layout and operating requirements; no guarantee applies.
MP4/MOV exists but will not open Repair tool such as VidRepair, working on a duplicate A same-camera reference clip may be needed; repair cannot restore overwritten bytes.
Supported Sony card with missing clips Sony Memory Card File Rescue Use only within its stated media support; some files may remain unplayable.
AVCCAM recording on a compatible SD card Panasonic AVCCAM Recovery, after checking current compatibility Expect possible metadata loss or split recordings.
RAID volume failure Edition with documented RAID support or a professional service Ontrack places RAID recovery in Technician; verify array layout and licensing.
Card or drive physically damaged Professional data-recovery service Software does not repair failed hardware; avoid repeated power cycles.

Questions to ask vendor support before payment

  • Have you recovered footage from my exact camera model, card type and filesystem?
  • Does the product reconstruct fragmented recordings, or only recover contiguous files?
  • Are my container and codec supported, including H.265/HEVC, XAVC, AVCHD or MXF variants?
  • Which edition includes disk imaging, video repair, RAID recovery and commercial-use rights?
  • Can I create a sector image, pause and resume a scan, and export scan results?
  • Does the preview verify full duration and audio, or only show a thumbnail?
  • What happens when the card has bad sectors or disconnects during scanning?
  • Can the software recover to a network or external destination without touching the source?
  • Are there limits on file size, card capacity, number of recoveries or trial saves?

Set realistic expectations

No reviewed vendor promises recovery in every case, and there is no comparable independent success rate for video-project footage. Capability lists are not benchmarks. A tool may find a clip that opens only partially, lose metadata, split a continuous recording or return a file that cannot be repaired. Plan for the possibility that irreplaceable footage will require specialist work or remain unrecoverable.

The safest purchase is therefore not the product with the longest format list. It is the one whose documented workflow matches your failure type, protects the original, supports your exact camera media and includes the required feature in the edition you can legally use. If you cannot establish those points, preserve the source and seek technical advice before scanning.
