The most important check is not the glasses’ USB-C plug or headline refresh rate. Verify that your exact gaming device can send video over USB-C DisplayPort (DP Alt Mode) and provide enough power, or identify the adapter or dock required for HDMI. Then confirm the resolution and refresh rate your device and games can actually deliver, and check fit, prescription support, charging, and spatial features for that specific model.

A practical buying decision therefore starts with the complete connection path—host, cable, adapter, glasses and power—not with the glasses in isolation. The checklist below covers handhelds, consoles, computers, vision needs and the setup problems most likely to appear after purchase.

Start with this pre-purchase checklist

  • Identify the exact host: write down the model and generation of your Steam Deck, Windows handheld, laptop, phone, Switch, PlayStation or Xbox.
  • Verify video output: the USB-C connector must support DisplayPort video output, commonly called DP Alt Mode. Connector shape alone proves nothing.
  • Verify power: XREAL says spatial large-screen use requires DP output and a 5V/1A power supply. Check the host specification rather than assuming every USB-C port meets it.
  • Map the connection: decide whether you need a direct USB-C cable, an HDMI-to-USB-C adapter, a dock or a control base.
  • Set realistic display goals: compare the host’s supported resolution and refresh rate with the glasses’ accepted modes and the game’s settings.
  • Check fit and eyesight: compare field of view, IPD range, nose-pad choices, diopter adjustment and prescription-lens options.
  • Plan power during play: determine whether the glasses draw power from the gaming device and how the device will charge at the same time.
  • Separate mirroring from spatial features: a large virtual screen, head-anchored modes and 3D features may require different hardware or software on different hosts.
  • Confirm return and trial terms: comfort, image alignment and prescription fit are personal; a specification sheet cannot tell you whether the glasses will feel right.

Use the manufacturer’s compatibility pages for the exact model. XREAL’s device-connection guide advises checking uncertain host support with the device maker: XREAL Device Connection.

What gaming AR glasses actually connect to

Most gaming glasses function as a wearable display. The host renders the game, sends a video signal through a cable or adapter, and supplies power. The glasses then show that signal in front of your eyes. This is different from a self-contained console: the glasses generally do not run the game, and their maximum specification does not create extra frames that the host or game cannot render.

Direct USB-C video

A direct connection is the simplest arrangement when the host has a USB-C port with DP Alt Mode and adequate power. A compatible cable carries video, while the host powers the glasses in products that have no internal battery. This is why two devices with identical USB-C sockets can behave differently: one may carry only data or charging, while the other also carries DisplayPort video.

HDMI and dock-based video

Consoles and older computers commonly output HDMI instead of USB-C DisplayPort. An HDMI-to-USB-C adapter or dock must convert the signal and, in many cases, supply power to the glasses. Compatibility depends on the exact adapter, its required power input, supported resolution and refresh rate, and whether it is designed for the glasses model. Do not treat a generic USB-C charging adapter as a video converter.

Mirrored display versus spatial display

Basic mirroring shows the same game image that would appear on a monitor. Spatial modes may keep a virtual screen fixed or anchored as you move your head, and some products add 3D or other augmented-reality functions. These modes can impose additional DP, power, software or host requirements. Decide which experience you want before judging whether a connection is “compatible.”

Will these glasses work with a Steam Deck or another handheld?

Handhelds are often a good fit because a single USB-C connection can replace a separate monitor. XREAL lists Steam Deck and ROG handhelds among devices that can connect directly, provided the particular port and power requirements are met. That list is a starting point, not a guarantee for every revision, dock or operating-system configuration.

Check the handheld’s exact USB-C port

  1. Open the handheld manufacturer’s specifications or support page for the exact model.
  2. Look for “DisplayPort,” “DP Alt Mode,” “USB-C video output” or a Thunderbolt-compatible video path. “USB-C” by itself is insufficient.
  3. Confirm the port can provide the power the glasses require. XREAL’s connection guidance specifies 5V/1A for spatial large-screen use.
  4. Check whether that same port is needed for charging. If it is, identify a compatible hub or charging adapter before buying the glasses.

Set the Steam Deck display mode deliberately

VITURE’s Steam Deck setup guidance recommends setting its Pro glasses to 1920×1080 at 120Hz. That is a product-specific setup recommendation, not a universal performance promise. Your Deck model, operating system, game, cable and adapter can expose different modes. Start with the recommended mode, then test a game and reduce refresh rate or resolution if the signal is unstable or battery use is excessive.

For a fixed virtual display rather than a simple mirror, VITURE documents optional Decky Loader and XR Gaming plugin installation. That software path is separate from basic video compatibility; a Deck can display a mirror even when the spatial software is not installed or supported.

Other Windows handhelds

ROG handhelds are listed by XREAL for direct connection when their USB-C video and power capabilities match the glasses. Windows handhelds can also differ in how their USB-C ports share bandwidth, charging and DisplayPort lanes. Check the manufacturer’s port diagram and test the desired resolution and refresh rate while the handheld is on battery and while it is connected to a charger.

Does a USB-C connector mean the glasses will work?

No. The connector’s shape is only mechanical. The host must expose DisplayPort video through USB-C, and it must provide sufficient power. ASUS states that a direct ROG XREAL R1 connection requires a compatible DP Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 4 port. XREAL similarly says a device must support DP video output and 5V/1A power for spatial large-screen use.

How to verify USB-C compatibility

  1. Read the host specification: search the exact model’s technical table for DP Alt Mode, DisplayPort over USB-C or Thunderbolt 4.
  2. Check the port label: a DisplayPort logo or Thunderbolt symbol is useful evidence, but the written specification is more reliable than an unlabeled socket.
  3. Confirm power: verify the port’s output and whether the host limits it on battery.
  4. Check cable capability: use a full-featured USB-C cable rated for video, not a charge-only lead.
  5. Confirm software support: install required device firmware or spatial-display software only after the basic video path is established.

If the manufacturer does not document video output, ask its support team before purchasing. A cable swap cannot add DP Alt Mode to a port that lacks the necessary hardware.

Can you use AR glasses with Switch, PlayStation or Xbox?

Yes, but consoles often need more hardware than a compatible handheld. XREAL describes an HDMI-to-USB-C adapter route for PlayStation and Xbox. ASUS describes using its control base when the main device lacks compatible USB-C DP Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 4; the base accepts DisplayPort and HDMI video inputs. The adapter or base must still provide the glasses with the correct power and signal.

PlayStation and Xbox

Start by identifying the console’s available HDMI output and the adapter’s required power input. Confirm that the adapter supports the console’s intended resolution and refresh rate, and that it can power the glasses or has a separate USB power lead. A setup that works at 1080p may not pass a higher refresh mode through every converter.

Nintendo Switch

Switch connection paths vary by model and generation. Some arrangements use the console dock’s HDMI output; others rely on a model-specific adapter. XREAL’s documentation describes adapter use for Switch models and notes feature limitations on older device guidance. Verify the exact Switch generation, dock, adapter and glasses model together instead of relying on a general “Switch compatible” label.

  • WORKS WITH YOUR USB-C GEAR — No Battery to Charge — Connects and powers over a single USB-C DisplayPort cable: iPhone 15/16/17, iPad, DP-capable Android phones, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Mac and PC. Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 and older (Lightning) iPhones need an adapter. For long phone sessions, add the XREAL Hub to charge and watch at once.

ASUS control-base path

ASUS’s support document states: “If your main device does not have a compatible USB Type-C (DP Alt Mode) or Thunderbolt™ 4 port, you can connect the glasses using the included ASUS control base (with DisplayPort and HDMI video output).” Treat that as a connection method for the specified ROG XREAL R1 package and support documentation, not as proof that every glasses model accepts the same base.

How should you compare resolution, refresh rate and latency?

Compare the complete system: host output, game settings, cable or adapter limits and glasses input modes. A glasses specification is a ceiling, not a guarantee that every game will run at that setting.

Specification or setup Published value How to interpret it
ROG XREAL R1 resolution 1920×1080 Manufacturer-listed display specification; the host and connection path must also support the mode.
ROG XREAL R1 maximum refresh rate Up to 240Hz A product maximum, not a promise that a Steam Deck, console, adapter or game will output 240 frames per second.
ROG XREAL R1 latency 3ms M2P Manufacturer specification; it is not an independent gaming-latency measurement across systems.
VITURE Pro glasses on Steam Deck 1920×1080 at 120Hz recommended VITURE’s setup guidance for that product and host context, not a universal recommendation for all glasses.

The ROG XREAL R1 specifications are published at ROG XREAL R1 specifications. VITURE’s Steam Deck instructions appear in VITURE Pro & One Series XR Glasses.

What limits the actual refresh rate?

  • GPU and game engine: a game must render enough frames at the selected resolution.
  • Operating-system display mode: the host may expose only certain combinations of resolution and refresh rate.
  • Adapter bandwidth: HDMI converters and docks can cap the signal below the glasses’ maximum.
  • Cable quality: marginal cables can cause black screens, flicker or fallback to a lower mode.
  • Power and thermal limits: a handheld may reduce performance on battery or while managing heat.

For competitive games, prioritize a stable mode with predictable frame pacing over a headline maximum that the complete setup cannot sustain.

Will the image fit your eyes and prescription?

Fit affects whether the image is sharp, centered and comfortable for a full session. Check field of view (FOV), interpupillary distance (IPD), nose-pad geometry and corrective-lens support for the exact model.

Field of view and IPD

ASUS lists the ROG XREAL R1 at a 57° field of view with compatibility for a 57–75mm IPD range. FOV describes how large the virtual image appears relative to your view; it is not the same as monitor size or immersion measured by an independent test. IPD range indicates whether the optical centers can align with your pupils. If your IPD falls near an edge of the stated range, try the glasses before committing when possible.

Diopter and prescription correction

The ROG XREAL R1 specifications state that it has no built-in diopter adjustment. ASUS support material describes a detachable mount for custom corrective lenses. That means users who need prescription correction should price and order the appropriate lens insert rather than assuming the glasses focus like adjustable binoculars.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VITURE documents four nose-pad sizes and up to −5.0D myopia adjustment for certain Pro and One series models, along with model-specific prescription frames. Those options do not automatically apply to other VITURE models or to another manufacturer’s glasses. Confirm the supported prescription range, lens type, installation method and whether astigmatism correction is available for the precise model.

Practical fit checks

  • Measure or estimate your IPD using a reliable method and compare it with the published range.
  • Check whether the nose pads let the display sit level without pressing uncomfortably.
  • Look for a return or trial period because optical alignment is personal.
  • Account for ordinary glasses: determine whether they fit under the device or whether prescription inserts are required.
  • Check how a corrective insert attaches and whether it can be removed for another user.

How will the glasses draw power, and can you charge while gaming?

Power planning is easy to overlook because the glasses look like eyewear rather than a display accessory. XREAL’s cited device guidance says the glasses have no built-in battery and are powered by the connected device; they turn off when unplugged. A direct connection can therefore consume the handheld’s battery and occupy its only USB-C port.

Single-port handhelds

If the handheld uses one USB-C port for both video and charging, you need a hub, dock or charging adapter that passes video while accepting power. Verify all three capabilities: DisplayPort output, the desired resolution and refresh rate, and sufficient USB Power Delivery. A hub that charges the handheld but lacks video pass-through will not solve the problem.

Charging adapters

VITURE documents a charging adapter for supported glasses that allows a connected device to charge while the glasses are in use. Confirm that the adapter is compatible with your glasses model and host, and check whether it changes the available display modes. Do not assume an accessory designed for one series works with another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Session planning

  • Test battery drain during the game you actually play, not only on the desktop.
  • Carry the correct charger and adapter if you will play away from a dock.
  • Keep cable strain low; a loose connector can interrupt both video and power.
  • Check whether the adapter adds a second cable that affects portability or comfort.

Anchor and follow modes

XREAL One-series documentation lists Anchor & Follow Mode in its compatibility table. Such a mode can be useful when you want the virtual display to stay spatially positioned rather than moving exactly with your head. Confirm that the mode is supported on your host and connection path; a basic mirrored signal may work even when spatial tracking does not.

Software-enhanced displays

VITURE’s Steam Deck workflow can use Decky Loader and the XR Gaming plugin for a fixed virtual display. This adds an installation and maintenance step, and it may depend on the Deck’s software version. If you only need a large screen, evaluate the glasses’ native mirror first and treat optional software as a separate feature.

Switch and feature limitations

Older XREAL device guidance flags feature limitations on Switch. A console may therefore show a game successfully while lacking the spatial controls available on a phone, computer or handheld. Ask specifically which modes work on your exact console, not simply whether an image appears.

A device-by-device compatibility worksheet

Host First check Likely extra hardware Questions to answer before buying
Steam Deck USB-C DP Alt Mode and power Charging-capable hub or adapter if the single port is occupied Can it sustain 1920×1080 at 120Hz in your games? Do you need a fixed virtual display?
ROG or other Windows handheld Exact USB-C video and charging specifications Dock or hub for simultaneous charging Which port carries video, and what modes remain available on battery?
PlayStation or Xbox HDMI output and adapter power HDMI-to-USB-C adapter or a compatible control base Does the converter support the console’s chosen resolution and refresh rate?
Nintendo Switch Exact model, dock and output path Model-compatible adapter or dock Which display and spatial features work on that generation?
Laptop or desktop USB-C DP Alt Mode, Thunderbolt 4 or HDMI Adapter or dock when no direct USB-C video exists Can the GPU and game deliver the desired mode through the selected port?

Use this buying process before placing an order

  1. Write a complete setup: list the host, operating system, glasses model, cable, adapter or dock, charger and intended games.
  2. Confirm the video standard: document DP Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 4 for direct USB-C use, or HDMI support for an adapter path.
  3. Confirm power: check the host’s output and whether the glasses require a separate supply. For XREAL spatial large-screen use, the stated requirement is 5V/1A.
  4. Choose a target mode: select a realistic resolution and refresh rate based on the host and game, then verify the adapter can pass it.
  5. Check optical fit: compare FOV, IPD, nose pads, diopter adjustment and prescription accessories.
  6. Plan charging: decide how the host will charge during play and verify the hub or charging adapter’s video pass-through.
  7. Confirm feature support: distinguish mirroring from anchor/follow modes, 3D and software-enhanced displays.
  8. Review the return policy: preserve the option to return the glasses if the image cannot be aligned or the fit is uncomfortable.
  9. Test in stages: first establish a stable image at a basic mode, then enable higher refresh, spatial software or other advanced features one at a time.

Troubleshoot the most common failure points

No image over USB-C

  • Confirm the port supports DP Alt Mode; try the host’s documented video-capable port.
  • Replace a charge-only or damaged cable with a full-featured USB-C video cable.
  • Check that the glasses receive the required power.
  • Restart the host with the glasses connected, then inspect display settings for a second screen.

Black screen or flicker through HDMI

  • Verify the adapter is an active HDMI-to-USB-C video adapter, not a passive plug.
  • Connect the adapter’s required USB power input.
  • Temporarily select 1920×1080 at a lower refresh rate to isolate bandwidth problems.
  • Check the console’s output setting and the adapter’s supported modes.

The host offers only a low refresh rate

Check each link in the chain: game settings, operating-system display mode, cable, dock or converter and glasses input specification. A 240Hz glasses maximum does not force a host to output 240Hz. Use the highest stable mode the complete system can sustain.

The image is blurry or partly cut off

  • Adjust the nose pads and frame position so the optical centers align with your pupils.
  • Compare your IPD with the model’s range.
  • Check whether you need prescription inserts or a supported diopter adjustment.
  • Clean the lenses and inspect for protective film before changing software settings.

The handheld battery drains too quickly

Reduce refresh rate or brightness if the product allows it, and use a charging-capable dock or adapter that supports video pass-through. Remember that glasses without a built-in battery draw power from the connected device, so a long session can shorten handheld runtime.

Mirroring works but spatial mode does not

Verify the host, operating-system version and required software for that spatial feature. Some functions are model-specific; VITURE’s fixed-display workflow uses optional Decky Loader and XR Gaming software on Steam Deck, while XREAL documentation lists different feature availability across devices. Treat the working mirror and the unavailable spatial mode as separate compatibility results.

How to compare two glasses models fairly

Use the same host, game, connection path and target mode when comparing products. Record manufacturer specifications separately from your own comfort observations, because the cited figures are not standardized independent tests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison axis Questions to ask
Host compatibility Does it connect directly, and which adapters or bases are required?
Signal modes What resolution and refresh rate does the host actually expose through this path?
Responsiveness What latency figure does the manufacturer publish, and is it defined clearly enough to compare?
Viewing area What FOV is specified, and does the image remain usable across your IPD?
Vision correction Are there diopter controls, nose-pad choices, prescription inserts or custom lens mounts?
Power Does the device have a battery, draw from the host, or support charging through an accessory?
Spatial functions Which anchor, follow, 3D or software features work on the exact host?
Portability How many cables and adapters must you carry, and can the setup charge during play?

Do not turn a higher maximum refresh rate, wider stated FOV or lower published latency into a universal ranking. The available evidence for these products consists largely of manufacturer specifications and setup instructions; it does not establish standardized independent rankings for gaming comfort, image quality or latency across the market.

Questions to answer before checkout

  • What exact port on my device carries video?
  • Does that port provide DP Alt Mode or Thunderbolt 4, and enough power?
  • If I use HDMI, which active adapter or control base is required?
  • Can the complete setup deliver my target resolution and refresh rate in the games I play?
  • Will the glasses fit my IPD and nose shape, and how will I correct my vision?
  • How will the host charge while the glasses are connected?
  • Do I need only a mirrored screen, or do I require anchor/follow or other spatial software?
  • What happens if the image is misaligned or the adapter does not support the desired mode?
