Buy the console that fits the games, discs, storage and display you use now; do not delay solely because next-generation hardware has been announced. As of October 13, 2026, Microsoft has announced Project Helix but only plans developer alpha hardware from 2027, with no consumer release date or price. Sony has announced that new PlayStation games will be digital-only from January 2028, but existing disc libraries and earlier releases remain relevant. Compare the exact Xbox Series or PlayStation 5 configuration, then calculate the complete cost of games, storage and accessories before deciding whether to buy now or wait.

Start with the decision that can be made today

A console purchase is mainly an ecosystem and configuration decision. List the games you already own, identify whether they are discs or digital licenses, check where your saves are stored, and decide whether you need a disc drive. Then compare usable storage, display features, accessory compatibility and the current price in your country. A future announcement is only a reason to wait when it includes a confirmed consumer launch, a price and a feature set that matters to you. Project Helix has none of those consumer details yet.

Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 all run current-generation games, but their formats differ. A lower-priced digital model can become expensive if you later need an add-on drive or rebuy games. Conversely, a disc model is unnecessary if your library is entirely digital and you never buy used games or discs.

Check the physical and digital format before choosing a model

Xbox Series X and Series S

Xbox Series X is available in configurations with a disc drive and supports compatible physical backward-compatible games. The disc is still required whenever you play that compatible disc license: it triggers installation and must remain inserted. Xbox Series S is all-digital and does not support disc-based games. It cannot read Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox discs, even when the title itself is backward compatible.

#1 Best Overall
Xbox Series X | Disc Gaming Console | 1TB SSD | Includes Wireless Controller, 4K Gaming, 120FPS, Carbon Black
  • FASTEST, MOST POWERFUL XBOX — Experience next-generation performance with 12 teraflops of processing power, delivering smoother gameplay, richer worlds, and faster responsiveness than any previous XBOX.
  • TRUE 4K GAMING UP TO 120 FPS — Enjoy breathtaking visuals with true 4K resolution, HDR, and frame rates up to 120 FPS, plus hardware-accelerated ray tracing for a heightened level of realism.
  • 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
  • QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.

Series S is aimed at 1440p output with 4K upscaling and is sold with different storage capacities. Series X is described by Xbox as a native-4K system and is available with a UHD Blu-ray drive. High resolution and frame-rate modes still require a compatible game and display; the console cannot create those modes for content that does not support them.

PlayStation 5 and PS5 Digital Edition

PlayStation 5 is sold in disc and Digital Edition configurations. The Digital Edition plays digital games only and has no disc drive. A disc model is the practical choice if you own PS4 or PS5 discs, buy used games, borrow discs, resell games, or want UHD Blu-ray playback. It also avoids the problem of discovering that a disc-based upgrade requires a console with a drive.

PS5 Digital Edition $599.99 Sony Interactive Entertainment US MSRP effective April 2, 2026
PS5 Pro $899.99 Sony Interactive Entertainment US MSRP effective April 2, 2026

These are US MSRPs, not guaranteed checkout prices. Retail promotions, bundles, taxes, stock and regional pricing can change the amount you actually pay. Sony’s listed prices do not by themselves establish the price of a disc-drive accessory or a particular bundle, so include those items only after checking the live listing.

Use a format checklist

  • Choose a disc model when your existing library includes discs, you regularly buy used or borrowed games, or movie-disc playback matters.
  • Choose a digital model when your purchases are digital, your account library is complete, and you accept that discs cannot be used later.
  • Before buying a digital console, search your account library rather than relying on a remembered purchase. A game may belong to a different account or region.
  • For any upgrade offer, confirm whether ownership is digital or whether the original disc must be inserted each time.

Verify every game and save that must follow you

Moving from PS4 to PS5

PlayStation says more than 4,000 PS4 games are ready to play on PS4 and PS5. That is broad compatibility, not a guarantee for every title or feature. Check an individual game for exceptions, patches, peripheral requirements and whether its upgrade is free, paid or unavailable.

Digital PS4 purchases appear in the library after you sign in to the purchasing account. PlayStation Plus cloud storage can carry save files between consoles, provided the saves have been uploaded and the account has the required subscription access. A disc-based PS4 game requires a PS5 configuration with a disc drive; a digital-only PS5 cannot validate that disc license.

Moving from Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox

Xbox Series X|S backward compatibility covers select Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. Eligible digital games can appear in the account library. For a compatible disc game, insert the disc to trigger installation and leave it inserted when playing. Series S cannot use the disc method.

Compatibility is title-specific. Check the Xbox compatibility catalog for each older game rather than assuming that an entire franchise, every edition or every regional disc works. Also check whether multiplayer servers, downloadable content and achievements remain available; backward compatibility of the base game does not automatically restore discontinued online services.

Make an ownership inventory

  1. Write down each essential game and whether it is a disc, a digital purchase, a subscription entitlement or a code.
  2. Record the account that owns each digital license. Sign into that account on the new console before deleting or selling the old one.
  3. Check region, edition and upgrade rules for disc games. A standard edition and a remastered edition may be separate products.
  4. Confirm save transfer. Cloud saves, local saves and cross-platform progression are different systems; do not assume that a game account alone carries the save.
  5. For multiplayer games, verify the required online service and whether your friends use the same platform ecosystem.

Calculate storage as part of the console price

PS5 storage choices

PS5 supports compatible internal M.2 SSD upgrades. Compatibility depends on the drive’s physical dimensions, interface, performance and cooling requirements, so do not treat any generic SSD as suitable. Check the current PlayStation specification before purchasing a drive.

External USB storage has a different role. PlayStation lists compatible external storage from 250 GB up to 8 TB for the described use. It can store supported PS5 and PS4 games, but a PS5 game stored there must be copied back to the internal SSD before it can run. Compatible PS4 games can be played directly from external storage. This makes an external drive useful for archiving large games, not a replacement for fast internal PS5 storage.

  • UP TO 120 FPS GAMEPLAY — Enjoy smooth, responsive gaming with frame rates up to 120 FPS, powered by XBOX Velocity Architecture, a custom NVMe SSD, and DirectX Raytracing for a heightened level of realism.
  • 512GB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 512GB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.

Plan capacity around your real rotation: keep frequently played PS5 titles on the internal or M.2 SSD, archive completed games externally, and leave free space for system updates. Before moving a drive to another PS5, verify that it is compatible and follow the console’s transfer and formatting prompts; formatting can erase existing data.

Xbox storage choices

Xbox supports dedicated Storage Expansion Cards that add storage at the console’s custom-SSD performance. USB external hard drives are another option, but they serve a different purpose. Confirm the exact drive type and capacity for your console before buying: a USB drive may store or play backward-compatible titles while newer optimized games may need the internal drive or an approved expansion card.

Do not compare a PS5 M.2 SSD, an Xbox Storage Expansion Card and a generic USB drive as if they were interchangeable. Their connectors, performance requirements and playable-content rules differ. Include the required platform-specific expansion cost in the budget when the console’s usable space will not cover your library.

Match the console to your television and playing priorities

Look at the display you actually own rather than buying on a resolution slogan. Xbox describes Series X as native 4K and Series S as designed for 1440p with 4K upscaling. Supported content and a compatible display are required for 4K output or high frame rates. Check your television or monitor for its HDMI specification, refresh rate, HDR support, variable-refresh features and the input used for the console.

  • If your display is 1080p, paying extra for a model whose main advantage is higher resolution may deliver less visible benefit than a larger library or additional storage.
  • If you use a 4K, high-refresh display, verify that the specific game offers the desired performance mode; “up to” frame-rate claims are not universal results.
  • Check physical space, ventilation and power-cable routing. A console that fits only when enclosed in a cabinet can overheat or become difficult to service.
  • For disc buyers, confirm that the console position allows easy access to the drive and that your home theater supports the audio and video formats you use.

Compare the complete current cost, not an old launch price

Prices change quickly, so use the live product page and retailer checkout for your region on the day you buy. The PS5 figures above are dated US MSRPs. Xbox announced price changes effective August 1, 2026: an increase of US$100 for 512 GB models and US$150 for 1 TB models. The announcement also says the 2 TB model is being sunset. It does not provide a complete current US price table for every Series X or Series S configuration, so an absolute Xbox price cannot be inferred from the increase alone.

Build a total-cost worksheet with these lines:

  • Console configuration and local tax.
  • One or two games you would otherwise purchase immediately.
  • Required online multiplayer subscription, if applicable to your games.
  • Storage expansion that matches the platform’s rules.
  • Second controller, headset, charging solution or disc-drive accessory.
  • Shipping, warranty extension and any bundle-specific difference.

A cheaper console can lose its advantage when you add a drive, expansion storage and replacement copies of games you already own physically. A higher-priced model can be the lower-cost choice over several years when it preserves your existing discs and saves you from repurchasing a library.

Understand what the transition announcements actually establish

Project Helix

Microsoft says Project Helix is in development, is intended to play Xbox console and PC games, and is planned to send alpha hardware to developers beginning in 2027. Jason Ronald, Xbox vice president for Next Generation, wrote on March 11, 2026: “I’m excited to share we plan to ship alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027.”

Developer alpha hardware is not a consumer launch. The announcement supplies no retail release date, final specifications, launch price or promise that a current console owner can trade in a specific model. Waiting for Project Helix is therefore a personal timing choice, not a response to a confirmed imminent product. Buy a Series console now when you need a working system and its library and format fit; wait only if you are comfortable with an unknown timetable and want to see finalized hardware first.

PlayStation’s January 2028 physical-release policy

Sony announced that new games released on PlayStation will be digital-only starting January 2028. Sid Shuman, senior director of Sony Interactive Entertainment Content Communications, wrote on July 1, 2026: “Following this date, new games will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.” The announcement says titles released or releasing before January 2028 in disc format are not affected.

A disc drive can still matter for current discs, pre-2028 releases, secondhand purchases, borrowed games and supported movie discs. It will not guarantee a physical copy of a newly released PlayStation game after the announced cutoff. Treat the policy as a reason to evaluate your existing library, not as evidence that disc hardware has no value today.

Plan the move before you sell the old console

PS4 or PS5 to a new PS5

  1. Update both consoles and sign into the same PlayStation account.
  2. Use PlayStation’s data-transfer process to move supported games, user data and settings over the local network. Read the transfer summary so you know what is included.
  3. Download digital games again from the account library instead of assuming every installation is copied.
  4. For a disc game, insert the disc in the destination PS5 and install it. A Digital Edition cannot perform this step.
  5. Reconnect a USB extended-storage drive using the console’s supported procedure. Do not unplug it during a write operation.
  6. If moving a compatible M.2 SSD, follow the current installation and transfer instructions and confirm that the destination PS5 recognizes it before formatting anything.
  7. Check cloud saves and open your most important games before wiping the old console.

Xbox One to Series X|S

  1. Sign into the same Microsoft account and allow the console library to synchronize.
  2. Check each older game in the compatibility catalog.
  3. For compatible discs, insert the disc to install and keep it inserted to play on Series X. Series S cannot use this route.
  4. Move or redownload digital games after confirming that the owning account is signed in.
  5. Reconnect external USB storage only after checking the console’s compatibility prompt and safely ejecting it when required.
  6. Pair existing Xbox One controllers and accessories, then test firmware, headset audio and multiplayer before selling the old console.

The official Series X box includes a controller, HDMI cable and power cord; expansion cards are sold separately. Xbox One controllers and many accessories work with Series X|S, but test each device and check game-specific requirements.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every older game works

Backward compatibility is a published list, not a blanket promise. Check the exact title, edition and downloadable content. If a game is absent from the list, retain the old hardware until you have confirmed an alternative.

Buying a digital model for a disc library

Account ownership does not convert a physical disc into a digital license. Photograph or list the discs you rely on, then choose a drive-equipped console or budget for legitimate digital replacements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buying the wrong storage accessory

A USB hard drive, an internal PS5 M.2 SSD and an Xbox expansion card solve different problems. Confirm platform, interface, capacity and playable-content rules before paying.

Deleting saves during setup

Cloud synchronization can be incomplete, especially when a console has been offline. Open the newest save on the replacement console, verify progress and only then reset the old system.

Using a future date as a purchase deadline

Project Helix’s 2027 developer-alpha plan is not a consumer launch date. Conversely, the January 2028 PlayStation policy is an announced future policy, not a statement that current disc consoles stop working. Separate confirmed dates from plans and policies when setting your deadline.

A practical buy-now or wait framework

Buy now when these conditions are true

  • You need a console for current games, and the current system supports the titles and accessories you use.
  • Your disc or digital format choice is clear.
  • You have priced storage and any required accessories.
  • Your display can use the model’s relevant resolution or refresh features.
  • You are comfortable with the current generation even if a successor arrives later.

Wait when these conditions are true

  • Your current console still meets your needs and you do not have a must-play release requiring an upgrade.
  • You specifically want to evaluate Project Helix after consumer specifications, price and availability are announced.
  • You are considering a PS5 mainly for future physical releases and would prefer to reassess after the January 2028 policy takes effect.
  • A current purchase would require expensive storage, a drive and replacement games that you may avoid by waiting.

Make the final choice

Score each candidate against six questions: Can it play the games you own? Does it accept the format you buy? Can you expand storage at a cost you accept? Does it suit your display? What is the complete current checkout cost? How much value do you place on waiting for confirmed future hardware? The model with the strongest practical score is the sensible purchase, even if another model has a more impressive specification.
