Do not rely on an online listing that simply says “unlocked.” Before paying, confirm the exact model and regional variant, verify compatibility with your carrier, obtain and check the IMEI, establish that the original carrier has removed its lock, and understand the warranty and return terms. An unlocked phone can still lack the bands or carrier features you need, and a black-listed or duplicate IMEI can make an otherwise attractive deal unusable.

Use this checklist before you pay

  1. Identify the exact device: model number, storage capacity, condition, country or region, and whether it is new, refurbished, or used.
  2. Check your carrier: compare the phone’s LTE and 5G support, SIM/eSIM arrangement, and carrier-dependent features with your intended service.
  3. Request the IMEI: get it from the seller before purchase, compare it with the listing and device, and run it through your carrier’s BYOD checker and an official blacklist service where available.
  4. Verify the lock: confirm that the outbound carrier has unlocked the phone; treat “factory unlocked” as a claim that still needs evidence.
  5. Validate support: check warranty eligibility, seller authorization, proof of purchase, and the region in which warranty service applies.
  6. Read the return policy: note the deadline, restocking fee, condition rules, and who pays return shipping.
  7. Test immediately: activate your SIM or eSIM, make a call, use mobile data, test 5G where relevant, and check for an old-carrier unlock request while you still have return rights.

Save the listing, invoice, IMEI, serial number, seller messages, and screenshots. Those records are useful if the phone fails an activation or return check.

Why “unlocked” does not mean universally compatible

SIM or network unlocking removes a carrier restriction. It does not promise support for every LTE or 5G band in every country, nor does it guarantee every carrier feature. A phone can accept your SIM and still miss a band used in your area, or lack carrier-specific support for VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, or a particular 5G implementation.

Regional variants matter because manufacturers can sell different radio configurations under a similar product name. A listing that says only “Pixel 8” or “Galaxy S23” leaves out information you need to make a compatibility decision. Ask for the complete model number and the country or region for which the device was originally sold.

1. Identify the exact listing, not just the family name

Record the model and regional variant

Ask the seller to provide the model number exactly as shown on the phone, box, or purchase record. Record the storage capacity as well; two listings for the same phone family can differ in storage and price. Confirm the country or region, because warranty eligibility, radio support, SIM configuration, and carrier features can vary by market.

Document condition and provenance

Have the seller state whether the phone is new, refurbished, or used. For a used or refurbished device, request a clear description of physical condition and any battery disclosure the listing makes. Keep the original listing and all answers from the seller. If the seller will not provide the model number, region, or IMEI, you cannot complete the most important checks before paying.

Check the SIM and eSIM arrangement

Confirm whether the specific regional model uses a physical SIM, eSIM, or both, and whether that arrangement matches your carrier and your travel or number-transfer plans. Do not infer this from a product family name; verify it for the exact model being offered.

2. Verify compatibility with your carrier

What Google says about Pixel phones

Google’s Pixel guidance says a SIM-unlocked phone can be used with any mobile service provider, but it also warns that not every Pixel 4a (5G) and later model works on every 5G network. Treat the statement as a starting point, not a substitute for checking your carrier and the exact regional variant.

Use your carrier’s compatibility or bring-your-own-device checker with the exact model and, when requested, the IMEI. Confirm that the checker accepts the device for your intended plan and region before you place the order.

What Samsung says about Galaxy phones

Samsung says unlocked Galaxy phones generally offer broad compatibility. However, VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, and some 5G optimizations can depend on the carrier and model. Ask the carrier specifically whether those features are supported on the exact regional variant, rather than assuming that an unlocked label includes them.

Questions to answer before checkout

  • Does the carrier’s BYOD tool accept the exact model and IMEI?
  • Are the model’s LTE and 5G bands suitable for the places where you will use it?
  • Will your intended plan support VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling on this model?
  • Does the phone’s physical-SIM or eSIM configuration fit your activation method?
  • Is the device intended for the same country or region as your service?

If any answer is uncertain, ask the carrier before paying. A phone can be technically unlocked yet still be a poor match for your network.

Pixel and Galaxy: the differences that affect an online purchase

Checkpoint Pixel guidance Galaxy guidance
Unlock requirement Google says a phone must be SIM-unlocked to work with any carrier; phones sold through the Google Store come unlocked. Samsung says an unlocked Galaxy generally offers broad compatibility, but the outbound carrier must unlock a device before BYOD activation on another carrier.
5G and carrier features Not every Pixel 4a (5G) and later model works on every 5G network. VoLTE, Wi-Fi Calling, and some 5G optimizations can depend on the carrier and model.
Warranty lookup Google provides a warranty-eligibility check using the IMEI or serial number. Confirm the seller’s warranty terms and regional support in the listing and purchase documents.

For either brand, compare the exact model and region, carrier bands, SIM/eSIM setup, confirmed unlock status, IMEI result, seller authorization, proof of purchase, warranty region, condition and battery disclosure, return terms, and the total price after taxes and shipping.

3. Obtain and check the IMEI before paying

Get the number from the seller

Ask for the IMEI shown in the phone’s Settings or on the box. Compare it with the number printed in the listing and with the device you receive. If a dual-SIM phone presents more than one IMEI, ask the seller which one the carrier checker requires and record every number supplied for the device.

Run the carrier’s BYOD check

Enter the IMEI in your destination carrier’s official BYOD checker before purchase. The result should identify the device as eligible for that carrier or clearly explain a limitation. Save a screenshot of the result with the date, because a listing can change after you order.

Check a government or carrier blacklist service

Use an official government or carrier blacklist tool where one is available. India’s official Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) guidance says to avoid a phone whose status is shown as Black-listed, duplicate, or already in use. Those statuses are a stop signal, not a reason to negotiate a lower price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the IMEI at every stage

The IMEI you check must be the IMEI of the actual phone. A clean result for a different number does not protect you. When the package arrives, compare the device’s IMEI with the number you checked and with the listing. Stop the setup and contact the seller if they do not match.

  • Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).

4. Verify that the original carrier removed its lock

Do not accept “factory unlocked” without proof

“Factory unlocked” is a seller description, not independent proof. Ask whether the phone was originally sold by a carrier and, if so, which carrier handled the unlock. Request written confirmation or other evidence that the outbound carrier removed the restriction.

Samsung’s BYOD requirement

Samsung states that when switching carriers, the phone must be unlocked by the outbound carrier for BYOD activation. A Samsung phone that still has an outbound-carrier lock can fail activation even when the listing calls it unlocked.

Practical questions for the seller

  • Was the phone originally purchased from a carrier or directly from a manufacturer store?
  • Has the original carrier completed the unlock, rather than merely approving a future request?
  • Can the seller confirm that the phone does not request the previous carrier’s unlock when a different SIM is inserted?
  • Will the seller accept a return if your carrier identifies a lock after delivery?

Do not send payment based only on a title, badge, or seller assertion. The IMEI check, carrier confirmation, and your arrival test should agree.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Check warranty eligibility, seller authorization, and proof of purchase

Use Google’s Pixel warranty lookup

Google allows buyers to check Pixel warranty eligibility with the IMEI or serial number. Run that check for the exact device and save the result. Confirm which country or region the warranty covers and whether the remaining term fits the price you are paying.

Understand the support path for third-party purchases

Google says purchases from unauthorized third-party retailers or carriers should be handled through that seller or carrier. That can make the seller’s reliability and return policy as important as the phone’s advertised condition. Ask for an invoice or other proof of purchase and keep it with the IMEI and serial-number records.

What to retain

  • Original listing and seller messages
  • Invoice or receipt
  • IMEI and serial number
  • Warranty-lookup result
  • Carrier BYOD result
  • Photos or screenshots showing the device and its identifiers

6. Read the marketplace return policy before ordering

There is no universal return rule for unlocked phones. The seller and marketplace may set different deadlines, restocking fees, condition requirements, and return-shipping responsibilities. Read the terms that apply to the specific listing, not a general marketplace summary.

Record the four terms that determine your risk

  1. Return window: count the days from delivery or from another date stated in the policy.
  2. Condition requirement: check whether activation, removed protective film, scratches, or missing accessories affect eligibility.
  3. Fees: look for restocking or other deductions.
  4. Shipping responsibility: determine who pays to send a failed or unwanted phone back.

Make sure the window is long enough to complete IMEI matching, SIM or eSIM activation, calling, mobile-data, and 5G tests. If the seller’s policy does not give you enough time for those checks, the low price may not justify the risk.

7. Test the phone as soon as it arrives

Perform the checks before transferring all your data or discarding packaging. Keep the phone, accessories, and packaging in the condition required by the return policy until the basic tests pass.

  1. Match identifiers: compare the delivered phone’s IMEI and serial number with the listing, invoice, and the numbers you checked before purchase.
  2. Inspect the reported condition: compare the device with the seller’s description and battery disclosure.
  3. Activate your service: insert the intended physical SIM or activate the intended eSIM.
  4. Place a call: verify that the phone registers on your carrier and completes an ordinary voice call.
  5. Test mobile data: confirm that data works away from Wi-Fi on your intended plan.
  6. Check 5G where relevant: test in a location and plan where your carrier provides 5G; remember that coverage and model support both affect the result.
  7. Watch for a lock request: verify that the phone does not ask for the previous carrier’s unlock or otherwise block activation.
  8. Save evidence: record error messages, activation screens, and test dates if anything fails.

If a test fails, contact the seller promptly through the marketplace’s documented process and keep the device in returnable condition. Do not wait until the deadline while trying repeated workarounds that could complicate a return.

Common red flags and the right response

The seller will not provide an IMEI

Without the IMEI, you cannot run the carrier or blacklist checks that protect you from an ineligible or reported device. Choose a listing where the seller will provide the number before payment.

The model number or region is missing

A family name alone cannot establish bands, SIM configuration, or warranty region. Request the full model and original market. If the seller cannot supply them, treat compatibility as unverified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The listing promises every carrier and every 5G network

That wording conflicts with the manufacturers’ qualifications. Google specifically warns that not every Pixel 4a (5G) and later model works on every 5G network, and Samsung notes that several carrier features depend on the model and carrier. Require a model-specific compatibility result instead.

The IMEI result is black-listed, duplicate, or already in use

Do not buy the phone. CEIR’s official guidance says to avoid devices with those statuses.

The seller says the phone is unlocked but the original carrier is unknown

Ask for the outbound carrier and proof of its unlock. For a Samsung device, an unresolved outbound-carrier lock can prevent BYOD activation.

The warranty is valid only through an unauthorized seller

Confirm that you are comfortable dealing with that seller for support. Google says unauthorized third-party purchases may need assistance from the seller or carrier rather than Google directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The return policy is vague

Get the window, condition rules, fees, and shipping responsibility in writing before paying. If those terms are not clear, you cannot price the risk accurately.

A practical comparison worksheet

Use one worksheet for every listing so that a low price does not distract you from a missing requirement.

  • Exact model and storage: write the complete model number and capacity.
  • Region: record the country or market of origin and your intended country of use.
  • Condition: note new, refurbished, or used status plus the disclosed battery condition.
  • Carrier fit: save the destination carrier’s BYOD result and ask about LTE, 5G, VoLTE, and Wi-Fi Calling support.
  • SIM setup: record physical-SIM and eSIM compatibility for your activation plan.
  • Unlock evidence: record the original carrier, the unlock confirmation, and any seller test result.
  • IMEI: save every IMEI supplied and the official checker results.
  • Seller and warranty: keep authorization details, invoice, serial number, and warranty lookup.
  • Returns: write the final return date, fees, condition rules, and shipping responsibility.
  • Total cost: calculate the amount after taxes and shipping, not only the headline listing price.

When to walk away

Walk away when the seller refuses to disclose the IMEI or exact model, when the carrier checker rejects the device for your intended service, when an official tool reports a black-listed, duplicate, or already-in-use status, or when the seller cannot establish that the outbound carrier removed its lock. Also reconsider a listing whose warranty and return terms leave no practical time to test the phone.

Final buying decision

An online Pixel or Samsung purchase is ready only when the exact regional model is identified, your carrier accepts it, the IMEI matches and clears official checks, the original carrier’s lock is removed, warranty and seller support are documented, and the return window covers a complete activation test. If one of those conditions remains unverified, the phone is not yet a safe unlocked-phone purchase.
