Before buying, verify the fund’s exact index, share structure, total costs, current holdings, tracking approach, trading terms, and fit with your goals. “Nasdaq fund” is not precise enough: a fund tracking the Nasdaq-100 and one tracking the Nasdaq Composite follow different indexes. An index itself cannot be bought directly; an index fund is a mutual fund or exchange-traded fund (ETF) that seeks to track an index.

Start by identifying the exact index

Read the fund’s investment objective rather than relying on a name, ticker, or “large-cap” or “technology” label. Confirm which benchmark it tracks and whether its objective is to follow the index’s price return or total return. Also check whether it aims to track the index before or after fees and expenses, as described in its current prospectus. The benchmark is the starting point for every comparison: if two funds track different indexes, their holdings, risks, and results may differ for reasons that have nothing to do with the funds’ fees or management.

  • S&P 500: A benchmark for the large-cap segment of the U.S. market. It uses float-adjusted market-cap weighting, so companies with larger eligible market values have larger index weights; its constituents are not equally weighted.
  • Nasdaq-100: Nasdaq describes this as tracking the 100 largest non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq. Its eligibility universe differs from the S&P 500’s.
  • Nasdaq Composite: A broader index of Nasdaq-listed securities across company sizes and sectors. It is not another name for the Nasdaq-100.

Nasdaq said targeted methodology changes to the Nasdaq-100 were implemented on May 1, 2026. If eligibility or weighting rules matter to your decision, check the current official methodology document rather than relying on an older description. The different index universes also mean that two funds with similar-sounding labels can hold different securities and carry different concentrations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, ask what companies are eligible for the index, how the index weights them, and what return measure the fund is trying to track. The S&P 500’s float-adjusted market-cap weighting and the broad eligibility descriptions of the Nasdaq indexes are established here; every current inclusion, removal, or weighting rule is not. If a particular rule is important to you, consult the current methodology published by the index provider. Avoid assuming that an index’s name, the number in its name, or its past performance tells you everything about its current construction.

Also distinguish the index from the investment product. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes an index fund as a type of mutual fund or ETF that seeks to track an index’s returns. You cannot buy an index itself directly. A fund provides indirect exposure, and its own prospectus describes how it attempts to follow the benchmark. That means the fund may not hold the exact same portfolio in exactly the same proportions at every moment.

Check how the fund is built and traded

Index funds can be mutual funds or ETFs. They may hold every index security or use sampling—holding a selection intended to approximate the index. Some funds may use derivatives or other techniques. These choices can affect holdings, costs, and how closely performance follows the benchmark, so consult the fund’s strategy section. Do not infer the approach from the words “index fund” alone: the strategy disclosure is where the fund explains how it seeks to achieve its objective.

Full replication and sampling are two different approaches to implementing an index strategy. With full replication, a fund seeks to hold all of the index securities; with sampling, it selects a subset intended to represent the index. One approach is not established as always better. Instead, check which approach a particular fund uses, whether it can use derivatives, and how its results compare with the stated benchmark. Those details help explain why a fund’s holdings and returns may not be identical to the index’s.

Feature ETF Mutual fund
When shares trade Trades on an exchange during the trading day. Purchases and redemptions are generally processed at the next calculated net asset value (NAV), subject to the fund’s terms.
Price Market price can differ from NAV; trades may occur at a premium or discount. Generally transacts at the next calculated NAV.
What to verify Brokerage terms, bid/ask spread, market price relative to NAV, and order conditions. Fund-specific purchase, redemption, minimum, and account terms.

These are general structural differences, not guarantees about every fund or account. Check the prospectus and your broker’s current terms for the specific investment. Trading control, minimums, and transaction costs can vary with the fund and account.

The practical question is how the structure will work in your account. An ETF’s exchange-traded shares have a market price, and an order may execute above or below the fund’s NAV. Review the spread between the bid and ask as well as the market price in relation to NAV; both are relevant to the price at which you buy or sell. A mutual fund generally processes purchases and redemptions at the next calculated NAV, rather than trading at an intraday exchange price. Check the actual fund rules for timing, minimums, and any account restrictions rather than assuming all funds operate alike.

This difference also affects the kind of price control available. For an ETF, check what order types your brokerage offers and understand that the execution price can differ from the NAV. For a mutual fund, check the processing and pricing terms set out by the fund. Neither structure removes investment risk, and neither guarantees a particular outcome. They are different ways of purchasing fund shares, so evaluate them alongside the benchmark, cost, and strategy rather than treating “ETF” or “mutual fund” as a quality rating.

Compare the complete cost, not just the expense ratio

The expense ratio is one part of the cost of investing. The SEC notes that an ETF’s fee table does not show every investor transaction cost, and that transaction costs incurred when a fund buys and sells underlying securities are not necessarily included in the expense ratio. Review the current prospectus fee table and your brokerage’s charges together.

  • Annual operating expenses: Compare the total operating-expense figure, often presented as an expense ratio, for funds tracking the same benchmark.
  • Shareholder and account fees: Look for sales loads, redemption, exchange, or account fees, along with any intermediary compensation described in the documents.
  • Brokerage charges: Check commissions or other trade charges in your account; they are separate from the fund’s operating expenses.
  • ETF trading costs: Consider the bid/ask spread and whether the market price is above or below NAV when you buy or sell. A premium or discount can affect your execution price.
  • Portfolio trading costs: Securities trading inside the fund can affect returns even when those costs do not appear in its expense ratio.

Think about costs across the entire ownership cycle: buying shares, holding them, and eventually selling or redeeming them. The annual operating-expense figure addresses ongoing fund expenses, while a sales load or brokerage charge may be associated with a transaction. Redemption, exchange, or account fees may apply under the fund’s or intermediary’s terms. For an ETF, spread and premium-or-discount conditions can influence the execution price. Do not assume that one figure in a fee table is a complete estimate of what you personally will pay; check both fund documents and your account’s current fee schedule.

Ask specifically whether there are sales loads or redemption, exchange, or account fees; whether the broker charges for the transaction; and whether intermediary compensation is disclosed. Then consider costs that may not be listed as a charge to you, such as the fund’s trading costs when it buys and sells underlying securities. These can affect fund returns even if they do not appear in the expense ratio. The SEC’s fee bulletin puts the basic point plainly: “Fees and expenses reduce the value of your fund’s investment returns.” The exact costs depend on the fund and account, so use current documents instead of assuming a particular charge applies.

When two funds track the same benchmark and have otherwise identical performance, lower cost leaves a higher net return. That is a like-for-like principle, not a promise that a lower-expense fund will outperform every other fund. Actual returns can differ from the benchmark because of expenses, trading costs, tracking error, and implementation choices. Nor is the fund with the lowest stated expense ratio necessarily best for every investor: compare execution, tracking, service terms, tax and account context, and the full fee picture. Specific fund tickers, fee levels, broker offers, and individual tax outcomes are not validated here, so check those facts for the products you are considering.

Inspect holdings, weights, and overlap

Look at the latest holdings and their weights, not just the number of securities. A fund can own many companies while assigning a large share of its assets to a small number of the largest ones. For the S&P 500, S&P Dow Jones Indices reported 503 constituents and a 37.8% combined weight for the largest 10 constituents as of August 31, 2026. The count can exceed 500 because some constituent companies have multiple share-class lines. These are dated index figures, not permanent characteristics or a guarantee of a fund’s exact portfolio weights.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That dated snapshot makes an important distinction visible: a broad list of holdings does not mean equal exposure to every company. Because the S&P 500 is float-adjusted market-cap weighted, larger eligible companies receive larger weights. The provider’s 37.8% figure applies to the largest 10 index constituents on August 31, 2026; it is not a timeless figure, nor should it be assumed to match a fund’s current portfolio precisely. Fund holdings can be checked in the fund provider’s latest materials. If concentration matters to your decision, inspect the current weights rather than relying on an old figure or on the total holding count alone.

For a Nasdaq-100 fund, check the provider’s current holdings and sector mix; the index’s narrower eligibility rules make it especially important not to assume that “Nasdaq” simply means “technology.” If you are considering both an S&P 500 and a Nasdaq-index fund, compare their current holdings to measure overlap. The indexes’ different universes do not prevent them from sharing large-company exposures, and the amount of overlap changes with holdings and weights.

Holdings comparisons answer more than “How many companies are in the fund?” They can show which companies account for the largest weights, what industries or sectors are represented, and whether two funds you plan to own have shared positions. Check both the names and the weights: two portfolios can hold some of the same companies but assign different proportions to them. Use date-matched, current fund holdings when estimating overlap, and do not guess at the extent of overlap from the index labels alone.

Nasdaq reported more than $1.7 trillion of global exposure linked to the Nasdaq-100 as of June 30, 2026. That provider-reported figure describes products linked to the index; it is not a forecast of returns, proof of suitability, or a recommendation to buy a fund. It is not necessary to use index adoption as a proxy for the risk or diversification of a particular fund. For a purchase decision, current holdings, weights, benchmark rules, and fund documents are more directly relevant.

Assess tracking and investment risks

Compare each fund’s historical returns with its stated benchmark over matching periods and on the same return basis. Review tracking difference—the gap between fund and index returns over a period—and, where available, tracking error, which describes variability in that gap. Fees, sampling, cash holdings, trading costs, and portfolio techniques can all contribute to divergence.

Make the comparison carefully: use the benchmark named in the prospectus, align the time periods, and compare like with like, such as price return with price return or total return with total return. A return comparison made on different bases can be misleading. The historical comparison can help you see how closely the fund has followed its stated index over the periods shown, but it cannot guarantee how it will perform in the future. Do not treat a past performance gap as a forecast or as proof that the same gap will persist.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says an index fund may underperform its index because of fees and expenses, trading costs, and tracking error. Indexing also limits the manager’s flexibility to avoid securities in the benchmark. An index fund still carries the risks of its underlying investments, including the possibility of equity-market losses; tracking an index does not guarantee a profit or prevent losses. Past performance does not predict future results.

Sampling, cash holdings, and other portfolio techniques may also help explain a difference between a fund and its benchmark. Use the strategy and risk sections of the prospectus, and check whether the fund provides relevant performance or tracking information in its documents. Tracking difference and tracking error are not the same question: difference describes the gap over a specified period, while error describes variation in that gap. Neither measure removes the underlying risk that the securities in the index can lose value.

Consider how the fund fits your investment horizon, ability to tolerate losses, account type, tax circumstances, and broader portfolio. A fund’s benchmark and recent performance cannot answer those personal suitability questions on their own. For example, a benchmark’s broad label does not tell you whether the fund duplicates positions already in your portfolio or whether you can tolerate declines in its underlying securities. Goals and circumstances are relevant, but no personalized recommendation or prediction about how either index will perform is provided.

Read the fund’s current documents before placing an order

Use the current prospectus or summary prospectus and latest shareholder report for fund-specific facts. The prospectus describes the objective, fees, strategy, risks, performance, purchase and sale terms, tax information, and intermediary compensation. The shareholder report provides additional information about the fund. Fund materials may be available from the fund company, a broker, or the SEC’s EDGAR database. The SEC also identifies FINRA’s Fund Analyzer as a tool for comparing mutual fund and ETF expenses.

When reading, match each question to the document section that can answer it. The objective names the intended benchmark and aim; the strategy describes how the fund tries to track it; the risk section identifies risks; and the fee table lists specified expenses and fees. Purchase and sale terms can clarify how transactions work, while performance information gives historical context. Use the latest shareholder report and current holdings for additional fund information, and verify brokerage charges separately rather than assuming the prospectus lists every cost you might encounter in your account.

The prospectus is not merely a formal document to skim after choosing a fund. It can reveal whether a product’s stated objective matches what you thought you were buying, what techniques it may use, and what charges or risks it describes. If the title or marketing language suggests a broad market exposure but the objective names a narrower index, use the named benchmark as the comparison point. If information is missing or unclear, the appropriate next step is to consult current fund materials or ask the intermediary about the specific term, not to fill in the gap by inference.

  1. Find the fund’s objective and benchmark. Confirm the full index name and return type; do not infer them from branding.
  2. Read the strategy and holdings. Check for full replication, sampling, derivatives, cash holdings, and the latest top positions and weights.
  3. Review the complete fee table. Note operating expenses, shareholder fees, and intermediary compensation, then check separate brokerage charges.
  4. Check performance and risk disclosures. Compare returns with the correct benchmark over the same periods and return basis; read the risks and any explanation of tracking.
  5. Verify trading and account terms. For an ETF, check the spread and market price relative to NAV. For a mutual fund, confirm processing time, minimums, and purchase or redemption rules.
  6. Make the decision in portfolio context. Consider your goals, time horizon, risk capacity, taxes, and existing holdings before submitting an order.

Before submitting an order, you should be able to answer several practical questions in plain language: Which exact index does this fund track? How does the fund implement that objective? What will I pay to buy, hold, and sell it, including potential transaction costs? How are the current holdings weighted, and how do they overlap with what I already own? How does this share structure price and process my transaction? What risks could matter to my goals and ability to tolerate losses? If those answers are unclear, pause and verify them in the current prospectus, shareholder report, holdings information, or brokerage terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I check before buying an S&P 500 or Nasdaq index fund?

Confirm the exact benchmark first—S&P 500, Nasdaq-100, Nasdaq Composite, or another named index. Then compare the fund’s structure and tracking approach, current holdings and weights, complete costs, trading and account terms, risks, and fit with your goals. Use the current prospectus and shareholder report rather than relying on a fund name or past performance.

Is the Nasdaq-100 the same as the Nasdaq Composite?

No. Nasdaq describes the Nasdaq-100 as tracking the 100 largest non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq. The Nasdaq Composite is broader and includes Nasdaq-listed securities across sizes and sectors. Check the fund’s stated benchmark to know which index it tracks.

Are S&P 500 index funds equally weighted?

Not by default. The S&P 500 uses float-adjusted market-cap weighting, so companies with larger eligible market values have larger index weights. S&P Dow Jones Indices reported that the largest 10 constituents represented 37.8% of index weight as of August 31, 2026; that is a dated index snapshot, not a permanent figure or a guarantee of a fund’s current weights.

What costs should I compare besides an expense ratio?

Check the prospectus fee table for total annual operating expenses and any sales load, redemption, exchange, or account fees, plus disclosed intermediary compensation. Separately review your broker’s charges. For an ETF, consider the bid/ask spread and whether its market price is at a premium or discount to NAV. Underlying-security trading costs can also affect returns without appearing in the expense ratio.

Do ETFs and mutual funds buy or sell at the same price?

Generally, no. ETF shares trade on an exchange during the day at market prices that can differ from NAV. Mutual fund purchases and redemptions are generally processed at the next calculated NAV, subject to the fund’s terms. Check the specific fund and brokerage rules for pricing, timing, minimums, and transaction costs.

Why might an index fund not match its index?

Expenses, trading costs, and tracking error can cause a fund to underperform its index, as the SEC notes. Sampling, cash holdings, and portfolio techniques can also contribute to differences. Compare the fund with its stated benchmark over matching periods and on the same return basis, while remembering that historical performance does not predict future results.

Does owning both an S&P 500 and Nasdaq fund provide completely separate exposure?

Not necessarily. The indexes have different eligibility rules, but they can share large-company exposures. Compare the funds’ current holdings and weights to quantify overlap; do not infer it from the index labels alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Before buying, identify the exact index and share structure, then use current fund documents and brokerage terms to compare holdings, full costs, execution, tracking, and risks. A familiar index name or low expense ratio alone cannot establish that a fund fits your goals. Check current, date-matched facts and consider how the fund fits your horizon, ability to tolerate losses, account, tax circumstances, and broader portfolio.
