The discount is only worthwhile if the computer, seller, warranty, return policy and total cost all hold up. Before paying, verify the exact configuration, treat the condition label as a description rather than a guarantee, confirm who is responsible for support, calculate the cost of returning it, and save every promise in writing. If you can inspect the machine, power it on and compare it with the listing before the return deadline expires.
Build a purchase record before you compare prices
Open the complete listing and save a copy or screenshots before checkout. Record the page address, date, advertised price, shipping charge, fees shown at checkout, seller name, stated condition, model identifier, configuration, included accessories, warranty language and return deadline. Marketplace listings can change after purchase, while a saved copy shows what you were promised.
Keep a single folder for the listing, seller messages, receipt, payment confirmation, warranty, tracking numbers and photographs of the package and computer. If a dispute arises, a contemporaneous record is more useful than a recollection of what the listing seemed to say.

Do not compare a vague product name with another computer that happens to look similar. Ask for the exact model number or stock-keeping identifier and match the configuration line by line. A model family may be sold with different processors, memory, storage, displays, graphics hardware, operating systems and power adapters.

Record these identity details
- Manufacturer and complete model designation, including generation or screen size when the seller provides it.
- Processor, graphics hardware, installed memory and storage capacity as stated in the listing.
- Operating-system edition, included power adapter, dock, cables and other accessories.
- Whether the photographed computer is the actual unit or a stock image.
- Any serial-number, asset-tag or configuration information the seller is willing to provide before purchase.
The consumer guidance from the Federal Trade Commission does not establish a universal PC-component inspection standard. Use the configuration as a fact-checking exercise: ask the seller to clarify any missing or contradictory specification in writing, then save the answer with the listing.
2. Treat open-box and refurbished labels as seller descriptions
“Open-box,” “refurbished” and “used” do not have one universal condition scale across sellers. FTC shopping guidance cautions that a refurbished or used item may not be in top condition. A label alone therefore cannot tell you how long the computer was used, which parts were replaced, whether cosmetic marks remain or who performed any refurbishment.
Read the full condition statement
Look for a plain-language description of scratches, dents, missing feet, worn keys, screen marks, battery condition, packaging and included accessories. Note whether the seller promises testing, cleaning, data wiping or replacement parts, and whether those statements apply to this individual unit or only to a product category.

Prefer clear photographs of the computer you will receive. Check all visible sides, ports, hinges, keyboard, display bezel and labels. If only catalogue photographs appear, ask whether the images represent the actual machine. Ask written questions about any ambiguity, such as a mark visible in a photograph, an accessory absent from the box or a condition grade that is not defined.
Separate facts from assumptions
Do not infer that “refurbished” means manufacturer-certified, that a replaced battery is new, or that an open-box computer was barely used. Require the seller to state what was inspected or replaced and what remains unknown. If the answer is evasive, treat the uncertainty as a cost and compare a listing with clearer evidence.
3. Vet the seller and the marketplace
Identify the legal or business name of the party taking your payment, not just the marketplace’s logo. Find a working contact method, location information and the instructions for returns, warranty claims and disputes. Determine whether the marketplace, the seller or a third-party service will handle each step.

Read feedback critically
Review recent feedback for the same seller and look for patterns involving inaccurate condition descriptions, missing accessories, delayed refunds or warranty refusals. A high overall score can conceal a recent change in inventory or recurring complaints about used electronics. Feedback is evidence about the seller’s behavior, not proof that this particular computer is sound.

Confirm protection for this transaction
Marketplace protections can differ by seller, category, payment method and item condition. Locate the current buyer-protection terms and verify that they cover this item and seller. Note the deadline for opening a claim and the documents the marketplace requires. A protection program is useful only if you can still meet its deadline and follow its procedure.
Keep payment inside the protected process
The FTC advises caution when a seller asks you to pay outside the marketplace system, because doing so may remove marketplace protections. Decline requests for direct transfers, gift cards or other arrangements that bypass the stated checkout and dispute route. Use a payment method that gives you a documented transaction and a practical route to challenge an unauthorized or misrepresented sale.
4. Calculate the return risk before you pay
A return policy is part of the product’s price. Read the complete policy, including exclusions for sale, clearance or open-box inventory, rather than relying on a short “returns accepted” badge.
| Term to record | Question to answer before checkout |
|---|---|
| Return deadline | What is the last calendar day to request a return or refund, and does the clock start at purchase, shipment or delivery? |
| Eligibility | Must the computer be functional, unused, reset, complete with accessories and in the original packaging? |
| Return shipping | Who pays for the label, and is the cost deducted from the refund? |
| Restocking charge | Does the seller deduct a restocking fee, and under what conditions? |
| Refund remedy | Will you receive money back, store credit, an exchange or a repair, and how long can processing take? |
| Procedure | Where must you submit the request, and do you need an authorization number or photographs? |
Write the deadline in your calendar as soon as the order is delivered. Keep the box, protective film, cables and manuals until you have finished your inspection. Photograph the unopened package and the computer’s condition if you may need to show that it was returned as received.
5. Read the written warranty line by line
Download or print the warranty before paying. A refurbished PC does not automatically carry the original manufacturer’s coverage; the actual written terms determine who is responsible and what remedy is available. FTC warranty guidance published in July 2023 recommends retaining the warranty and receipt and checking the details below.

| Warranty element | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Warrantor | Name the company that must honor the warranty and its contact route. |
| Term | Record the start date, duration and any separate periods for particular components. |
| Coverage | Identify covered parts and the kinds of failures included; check whether accessories, batteries or cosmetic defects are excluded. |
| Exclusions | Look for exclusions involving accidents, liquid, unauthorized repairs, software, consumables, normal wear or use outside stated conditions. |
| Remedy | Determine whether the remedy is repair, replacement, refund or the seller’s choice, and whether a replacement may be refurbished. |
| Claim process | Note how to open a claim, required proof of purchase, troubleshooting steps and any authorization number. |
| Labor and shipping | Check for diagnostic, labor, packaging or outbound and return-shipping charges. |
| Eligibility | Confirm whether the warranty follows the computer, the original purchaser or a particular sales channel. |
Save the receipt with the warranty. Ask the seller to put any promise that is more generous than the written warranty into a message or revised document; an informal assurance is harder to enforce than a term you can produce.
6. Compare the real cost, not the headline discount
For each listing, calculate the amount you will actually pay and the amount you could lose if the computer is unsuitable. Start with the advertised price, then add shipping and checkout fees. Add the potential return postage and any restocking charge when assessing downside risk. A cheaper computer can become the more expensive choice if it has a short return window, costly shipping or store-credit-only remedy.
Make the comparison at the same configuration. A lower price for less memory or storage is not a saving if you would need to buy the missing capability immediately. Likewise, a computer with a longer warranty may justify a higher price when the cheaper listing leaves you paying labor or shipping for a failure.

Use a payment method with recourse
Pay through the marketplace’s documented checkout when possible. Confirm the seller name and amount on the payment record, and do not let a discount persuade you to abandon the platform’s protection. Keep confirmation emails and bank or card records until the return and warranty periods have ended.
7. Inspect the actual computer when you can
An in-person inspection is valuable, but the FTC materials do not prescribe a PC-specific test sequence. The following checks are practical advice, not a certification or legal requirement. Perform them before the return window closes and compare every result with the listing.
- Match identity: Compare the model label and configuration shown by the operating system or firmware with the listing and your receipt.
- Power on: Confirm that the computer starts, reaches the promised operating system and does not display an unexplained password or activation lock.
- Check the display and input: Look for obvious damage or persistent marks, test the keyboard and touchpad, and verify that brightness controls respond.
- Check ports and accessories: Test the ports you need and confirm that the supplied adapter, cables and other listed items are present.
- Assess battery behavior: If it is a laptop, observe whether it charges and whether the battery warning or health information conflicts with the seller’s description.
- Verify storage and memory: Confirm that the installed capacities match the listing and that the system recognizes them reliably.
- Document discrepancies: Photograph any damage, error message or missing item and notify the seller in writing while the return period is open.
For a mailed purchase, start this inspection on delivery day. Do not postpone it until after the deadline, even if the computer appears clean and powers on.

8. Compare two or more listings on the same evidence
Put competing offers in a side-by-side worksheet. Do not award a listing credit for information it does not provide; instead, ask for clarification before purchase.

Choose the offer whose unknowns you can tolerate, not simply the one with the largest advertised reduction. If two computers are similar, clearer terms and an easier return can be worth more than a small price difference.
9. Recognize reasons to walk away
- The seller will not identify the exact model or refuses to answer a basic configuration question.
- Photos appear to show a different computer, or the seller will not confirm whether they are of the actual unit.
- The condition grade is prominent but its definition is missing from the listing and the seller will not explain it.
- Warranty language is absent, contradictory or limited to a promise that is not supplied in writing.
- The return deadline, shipping responsibility or restocking charge cannot be found before payment.
- You are pressured to pay outside the marketplace or to communicate only through an unrecorded channel.
- The price depends on a clearance or sale exception that removes the return remedy you need.
Any one of these issues may be explainable, but you should obtain a clear written answer before committing money. If the answer never arrives, another listing with verifiable terms is the safer comparison.
10. Keep evidence until every remedy expires
Retain the listing and seller messages through the return deadline, and retain the receipt and warranty for the full warranty term. Save delivery confirmation, photographs, diagnostic notes and any claim number. When you contact the seller, describe the discrepancy, attach the relevant evidence and state the remedy you are requesting.
Track separate deadlines: the marketplace’s dispute window, the seller’s return window and the warranty claim period may not match. A seller’s response does not necessarily extend a marketplace deadline, so confirm any extension in writing. If you return the computer, keep the tracking record and proof of delivery until the refund has posted.
A practical decision rule
Buy only when five answers are clear: you know exactly which computer will arrive; the condition evidence matches your tolerance; you know who will support it; the return and warranty terms are workable; and the all-in price still makes sense after shipping and possible return costs. If any answer depends on an assumption, pause the purchase and request written clarification. That short delay is usually cheaper than discovering after delivery that the discount came with no practical way to correct a mismatch.
