Before buying an older PC RPG, verify the exact title, edition, storefront build, operating system, hardware requirements, launcher and account obligations, offline behavior, included content, technical issues, and refund policy. An old game is not automatically easy to run: different editions can use different patches, installers, DRM, language files, save systems, and expansion bundles.
Start with the exact game and edition
“The game” may refer to several materially different products: an original disc release, a digital re-release, a remastered edition, a bundle, or a storefront-specific build. Record the following before you compare compatibility:
- Full title, including subtitle and edition name.
- Storefront and product page.
- Operating system you will use.
- Whether you want the base game, an expansion bundle, or a remaster.
- Whether you need multiplayer, achievements, cloud saves, a particular language, or offline play.
Also note the region, release date or build information shown on the listing, and whether the page describes a separate installer or launcher. Save a link or screenshot of the current page so you can compare it with support notes later. Store pages can change their descriptions, bundle contents, or supported systems.
Do not infer one edition’s behavior from another store. A technical fix, installer, language option, or expansion included in one release may be absent from another. When no specific RPG has been named, there is no responsible way to declare a single “best” edition; the right choice depends on your priorities and the currently sold build.

Check operating-system and hardware compatibility
Read the listing for that edition
Use the product page for the exact edition, not a general search result or a page for a sequel. GOG’s user agreement explicitly says there is no single set of requirements for all games and directs customers to the relevant product page: GOG User Agreement. That page is identified as effective until 9 March 2026, so check the currently displayed agreement if its terms have been updated. Treat the listed minimum and recommended specifications as that edition’s published requirements, not as a guarantee of smooth performance.
Compare every listed component with your PC
Check the machine you will actually use, including a laptop’s integrated graphics rather than a more powerful desktop you own. Compare:
- Operating-system version and architecture.
- Processor model and required instruction support, if listed.
- System memory.
- Graphics adapter and available video memory.
- Free storage, including room for the installer, patches, and save files.
- Display resolution and aspect ratio if the listing or technical notes mention them.
On Windows, open Settings > System > About to identify the processor, installed memory, system type, and Windows edition. Open Settings > System > Storage to check free space. For graphics details, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc, choose Performance, and select the GPU. On another operating system, use its system-information utility and compare the model names directly with the listing.

Check storage on the drive where the game and its saves will live, not merely the total capacity of another drive. Leave room for the downloaded installer, temporary extraction files, updates, and backups. If the listing names a 32-bit or 64-bit build, compare that detail with your operating system rather than assuming a compatibility layer will handle it.
Interpret minimum requirements cautiously
Minimum requirements usually describe the lowest configuration the publisher intends to support. They do not establish a frame-rate target, a particular resolution, reliable compatibility with every driver, or trouble-free operation on a modern operating system. A computer that barely meets the minimum may still need lower resolution, a compatibility setting, or a community fix. Conversely, a very powerful modern PC can encounter problems caused by old installers, timing assumptions, unsupported display modes, or input handling rather than insufficient performance.
Recommended requirements are not a promise that every feature will work. They may not address widescreen scaling, high-refresh displays, modern audio devices, or the way the game handles a current Windows or Linux release. Look for notes tied to the same executable and edition before treating a requirement as a compatibility verdict.
Separate launcher, account, DRM, and connection requirements
Identify every account and client
The store where you buy a game may require its desktop client. The game may also require a publisher account, a separate activation code, or a one-time online check. Look for these requirements in the product description, system requirements, and support documentation before purchase. A “no additional account” statement is different from “the store client is optional,” so check both.

A game tied to a store account can be difficult to reinstall if you lose access to that account, even when the installed files themselves do not need a constant connection. If a product page mentions a third-party service, read that service’s current activation requirements rather than relying on an old forum post.

Do not assume DRM behavior across stores
GOG’s developer quality guidance says, “DRM-free is a MUST, copy protection is a NO.” The statement describes requirements for games submitted to that storefront; it is not a rule governing Steam, boxed releases, or any other store. Read the edition’s own documentation to determine whether it has activation, copy protection, or a required client.
Record whether the game needs:
- Initial online activation.
- A running store client every time you play.
- A third-party account.
- Periodic internet checks.
- Online services for multiplayer, leaderboards, achievements, or cloud saves.
Verify offline installation and offline play separately
Offline installation means you can obtain and run an installer without using the store client at install time. Offline play means the installed game continues to launch without an internet connection. They are related but not identical. Test the distinction in the store’s documentation, and check whether updates, DLC authentication, cloud saves, or multiplayer require a connection.
For a GOG edition, the storefront’s documentation is relevant because its release requirements discuss DRM-free distribution and offline installers. That evidence applies to GOG releases, not automatically to another storefront’s edition. Download any available offline installers while you still have account access, and keep a copy of your purchase information in case you later need to reinstall. An offline installer also does not guarantee that online multiplayer services will remain available.
Compare what is actually included
Price alone does not tell you whether two listings contain the same game. Make a side-by-side record before checkout.

Check whether an expansion is listed as installed automatically or merely supplied as a separate download. Confirm that “complete,” “gold,” or “collection” labels name the included components. A soundtrack, manual, or artbook can be valuable preservation material but is not the same as an in-game expansion.
When a listing does not state a comparable value, treat it as unknown rather than assuming parity. Check the edition’s package contents, release notes, and support page. A technical reference such as the PCGamingWiki page for Quest for Glory: Shadows of Darkness can help identify display, input, save, crash, and version issues for that particular title. It is a per-game reference, not a universal guarantee for every older RPG.
Investigate technical notes before paying
Display and rendering
Search for notes about widescreen behavior, unsupported resolutions, aspect-ratio correction, windowed mode, and graphics acceleration. A game may launch but display stretched menus, a blank video, or unusable text at a modern resolution. Confirm whether the fix applies to your edition and operating system before installing it.
Check screenshots or documentation for the actual supported resolution rather than assuming that a modern monitor will be handled automatically. If a workaround changes an executable or configuration file, record the original version and keep a backup. A fix intended for a remaster or a different storefront build may cause new problems in the edition you bought.

Input and controller support
Check keyboard mappings, mouse behavior, controller support, and whether the game expects an older input standard. A controller working in the store client does not prove that the game accepts it. Look for documented remapping options and whether configuration files are stored in the installation folder or your user profile.
Verify which controls are needed for menus, inventory, combat, and text entry. If the game supports only keyboard and mouse, do not treat a generic controller recommendation as a solution. Store overlays and remapping layers can also change input behavior, so test the game itself.
Crashes, timing, and compatibility settings
Look for reports of crashes at launch, during video playback, when changing areas, or while saving. Also check whether the game needs a compatibility mode, a particular rendering wrapper, a community patch, or a frame-rate limit. Treat community reports as leads. Confirm high-impact changes against the publisher or storefront documentation when possible, and make a backup before replacing files.

Save locations and permissions
Find out where saves are stored and whether the game writes to a protected installation directory. If you use more than one computer, verify that cloud synchronization covers the save folder you care about. Back up a working save before installing patches or changing compatibility settings.
Do not assume that a visible save menu means the store client is backing up those files. A game can have local saves even when the storefront offers cloud storage for other titles. Before switching editions, copy the saves and check whether the filenames and formats are documented as compatible.
Modern operating-system support
Check the date and scope of technical notes. A fix written for Windows 7 may not address a Windows 11 issue, and a Linux workaround may depend on a specific compatibility layer. Look for reports tied to the same edition, executable, and distribution channel rather than relying on the game’s original release date.

Compare current price and ownership terms
When two editions appear similar, compare the current price together with what you receive and the conditions attached to the purchase. A cheaper base game may require separately purchased expansions, while a higher-priced collection may include content you do not need. Note whether the price is temporary, whether the listing is a bundle, and whether the refund policy differs by purchase type. Do not let a sale price replace the checks for requirements, activation, language, or offline use.

Decide which comparison criteria matter most
When multiple editions exist, compare the axes that match your use case:
- Convenience: prioritize a maintained installer, automatic updates, and straightforward launching.
- Offline access: verify downloadable installers and whether the installed game launches without a connection.
- Preservation: consider access to manuals, original extras, older versions, and independent installers.
- Multiplayer: confirm that servers, matchmaking, networking, and required accounts still function.
- Specific content: verify the exact expansions, language, censorship changes, and bonus files you want.
- Technical reliability: favor an edition with documented fixes that match your operating system and hardware.
There is no universal winner. An edition that is convenient for a connected desktop may be a poor choice for a travel laptop with no reliable internet. An edition with every expansion may still be unsuitable if its language or input support does not meet your needs.

Understand refunds before checkout
Refund rules are store-specific and may depend on purchase type, time elapsed, play time, payment method, region, or whether the product is in Early Access. The GOG support page titled GOG Voluntary Refund Policy – Orders explains that store’s policy and advises contacting support when a game is not working. Its guidance mentions a 30-day period for Early Access games; that does not establish a universal refund right for every GOG purchase or for another store.
Read the policy shown at checkout and save the order confirmation. Do not buy on the assumption that a failed launch automatically guarantees a refund. If the game does not work, document the edition, operating system, error message, troubleshooting steps, and purchase details before contacting support. A support request is stronger when it identifies the exact build and distinguishes an installation failure from a crash after launch.

A disc release adds checks that do not apply to a download. Confirm that your current PC has a suitable optical drive or that you have a lawful way to create an installer. Find out whether installation requires a serial number, an activation server, a disc check, or a service that may no longer exist. Also check whether the disc contains a patch level compatible with your operating system and whether saves or configuration files use a protected folder.
These are conditional checks, not findings about a particular RPG. The exact disc, region, edition, and activation system determine the risk. Keep the serial number and manuals with the disc, but do not assume that possessing the media guarantees that an obsolete activation service will still answer.

The installer fails
- Confirm that you downloaded the installer for the correct edition and operating system.
- Check free storage and permissions on the destination drive.
- Retry from a verified download or the store’s official installer.
- Search the edition’s support notes for known installer or dependency issues.
The game installs but will not launch
- Confirm whether the store client or an account must be running.
- Record the exact error and when it appears.
- Try the documented compatibility or display setting for your edition.
- Do not replace executables or save files until you have made a backup.
The game launches but has graphics or input problems
- Test windowed mode and a supported resolution listed in the technical notes.
- Check keyboard, mouse, and controller mappings inside the game.
- Use only fixes that identify the same release or executable.
- Keep the original files so you can undo a change.
Saves disappear or fail to synchronize
- Locate the actual save folder and copy a working save to a separate backup.
- Check whether cloud synchronization covers that folder.
- Avoid switching editions until you know whether their save formats are compatible.
Final buying decision
Buy when the exact edition meets your operating-system and hardware needs, its launcher and connection behavior fit your usage, its included content matches your expectations, and you understand the technical and refund risks. If a critical answer remains unknown—especially activation, offline launch, language, or save compatibility—treat that uncertainty as a reason to keep investigating rather than assuming the editions are interchangeable.
