The safest iPhone purchase is not decided by the listing grade or the seller’s star rating alone. Before paying, verify who is legally selling the phone, what “refurbished” or “excellent” means in that seller’s system, whether the exact model works on your carrier, and what return or dispute remedy applies. When the phone arrives, inspect it immediately and complete setup far enough to confirm that Activation Lock is not enabled. If an iPhone asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account, do not accept it.
Start with the seller, not the phone
A retailer’s own inventory and a marketplace listing are different transactions, even when they appear on the same website. A retailer may own the stock and handle returns directly. A marketplace may only provide the storefront while an independent seller owns the phone, sets the condition description, and controls the first response to a problem.

Identify the seller of record
Find the business name, contact details, location, and the party named in the order confirmation. On a marketplace, record both the platform and the individual seller. Do not assume that the platform’s reputation guarantees the seller’s product or service.
Recommended Free Tools
In the United States, the INFORM Consumers Act requires covered online marketplaces to collect and verify information for certain high-volume third-party sellers and disclose specified identity and contact information for qualifying sellers. The law took effect on June 27, 2023, but coverage depends on statutory definitions and exceptions. A disclosure is not a warranty, certification, authenticity finding, or promise that the phone will work on your network.
#1 Best Overall
- Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Read the remedy before checkout
Locate the return, refund, and warranty pages before placing the order. Record:
- The number of calendar days in the return period and when that clock starts.
- Which reasons qualify: changed mind, inaccurate description, defect, wrong model, or only an item that is not as described.
- Whether the phone must be returned in a particular condition, with accessories, or in its original packaging.
- Who pays return shipping and whether a restocking fee is possible.
- How a return must be initiated and whether you need authorization before shipping.
- Whether the marketplace or the seller handles the return and dispute.
Save screenshots or a PDF of the listing, photos, condition grade, promised battery information, return policy, and seller messages. Listings can change after purchase, while your saved copy shows what you agreed to buy.
Understand what “used” and “refurbished” mean here
There is no universal industry meaning for grades such as “excellent,” “A grade,” or “refurbished.” One seller’s grade may allow visible scratches; another may promise a near-new exterior. Apple recommends asking whether a seller certifies devices and exactly what that certification process checks. Do not treat a retailer’s use of the word “certified” as proof that Apple inspected the phone.
Ask for device-specific evidence
If appearance matters, request photographs of the actual phone rather than stock images. Ask for written answers about:
- Scratches, dents, cracks, screen burn-in, camera-lens damage, and bent frames.
- Battery maximum capacity and any battery-service message.
- Whether the display, battery, cameras, or logic board were replaced.
- Whether replacement parts are genuine, previously used, or from another supplier.
- Included accessories and whether they are original or compatible replacements.
A vague answer is itself a buying risk. Compare the seller’s written response with the listing and retain both.
Verify the exact model and carrier fit
Before paying, identify the precise model, storage capacity, and regional variant. Ask your intended carrier to confirm that exact model is supported on your plan and to explain any carrier-lock or network requirements. Compatibility is not established merely because a listing says “unlocked.” Carrier policies and supported network bands differ by market and model.
Rank #2
- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
Keep carrier compatibility separate from seller recourse. A phone can be technically compatible yet still be locked, unpaid, barred, or otherwise unusable under a carrier’s rules. The available Apple and consumer guidance does not establish one universal check that conclusively detects every stolen-device, financing, or carrier-status problem in every country. Get the carrier’s answer before checkout and keep the representative’s reference number or written confirmation when available.
Use this pre-checkout question list
| Question | What a useful answer includes | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Who sells the phone? | Legal business name, contact route, and whether the platform or seller handles returns | Determines who must resolve a discrepancy |
| What does the condition grade allow? | Specific standards for scratches, dents, screen condition, and accessories | Grades are not universal |
| What is the battery condition? | Maximum-capacity reading, service messages, and whether the figure is guaranteed | Battery wear affects value and likely replacement cost |
| What repairs were performed? | Parts replaced, repair provider, and any remaining coverage | Repair history can affect features and reliability |
| Is the exact model usable on my carrier? | Carrier confirmation for the model and plan, including lock requirements | “Unlocked” in a listing may be insufficient |
| How do I return it? | Deadline, eligible reasons, authorization process, shipping cost, and fees | A remedy is useful only if you can invoke it on time |
| What payment protection applies? | Marketplace dispute route and card or payment-service conditions | Protection depends on the item, seller, and payment path |
Inspect the iPhone in person or immediately on arrival
Do not let the return period expire while you are still deciding whether the phone is acceptable. Apple’s pre-owned-device guidance recommends checking physical condition, power, charging, battery health, and repair information.
Physical inspection
- Remove the case and any screen protector that hides damage.
- Under good light, inspect the display, frame, back glass, camera lenses, buttons, speakers, microphone openings, and charging connector.
- Look for cracks, dents, deep scratches, bent edges, lifted glass, liquid indicators, and debris in the connector.
- Confirm that the model, color, storage capacity, and included accessories match the order.
Minor cosmetic wear may match a used grade; structural damage or an undisclosed crack does not. Photograph the phone from several angles before removing protective films or discarding packaging.
Power and charging
Turn the phone on and connect a known-good charger. If it will not power on, try charging it long enough to determine whether the battery is simply depleted. Apple’s guidance is direct: do not buy an iPhone that will not charge. If you are inspecting a locked phone in person, ask the seller to erase it so you can test it rather than accepting a promise that it works.
Activation Lock is a stop condition
Activation Lock links an iPhone to the previous owner’s Apple Account through Find My. Erasing the phone does not remove that link unless the owner removes it from the account.
Apple states: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” Its separate guidance says: “Don’t take ownership of any used iPhone or iPad until it’s been removed from the previous owner’s account.” Treat those instructions as a condition of the sale, not as a problem you can solve later.

Check a phone you are holding
- Ask the seller to erase the iPhone in front of you.
- Start setup from the Hello screen.
- Continue far enough to connect to Wi-Fi or cellular service and activate the device.
- If setup requests the previous owner’s Apple Account credentials, stop. The phone is still linked.
- Have the owner remove the device from their account, then erase it again and repeat activation.
Check an online delivery
A Hello screen means the phone has been erased, not that it is ready for you. Complete setup promptly. If the display says “iPhone Locked to Owner” or requests the former owner’s credentials, photograph the message, do not attempt a bypass, and use the seller’s and marketplace’s return process. Return the phone while the applicable deadline is open.
Check battery health and charging behavior
On iPhone 6 and later running iOS 11.3 or later, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iOS 16.1 or later, the menu is labeled Battery Health & Charging. Review maximum capacity and any important battery messages.
Maximum capacity is one input, not a pass/fail grade. Weigh it against the price, disclosed condition, repair history, seller remedy, and the likely cost and inconvenience of replacement. A listing that promises a particular battery level should be compared with the reading you receive; save a screenshot immediately.
Read Parts and Service History without overinterpreting it
On iOS 15.2 or later, open Settings > General > About. When the model and repaired component are supported, a Parts and Service History section may appear.
| iPhone generation | Parts Apple says may be listed |
|---|---|
| iPhone 12 models and later | Battery, display, logic board, front camera, and rear cameras |
| iPhone 11 models | Battery and display |
| iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, and iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) | Battery |
Older iOS versions show less information, and a part serviced multiple times may show only the most recent service. Therefore, a missing section or missing component is not proof that no repair occurred.
What each label means
- Genuine: Apple says the repair used genuine Apple parts and processes.
- Unknown: In some situations, a nongenuine part was used or the part is not working as expected.
- Unverified: The logic board was previously replaced; Apple says this may affect features such as Apple Pay.
- Used: The part was previously used or installed in another iPhone.
Describe exactly what the screen reports instead of declaring the whole phone good or bad. Ask the seller to explain an unexpected entry and decide whether the repair, functionality, and remaining coverage fit your needs. The available entries depend on model, iOS version, and service history.

Test the functions that matter to you
After activation reaches the Home Screen, compare the received device with the listing and test the features you will actually use. At minimum, check:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Touch response across the entire display, brightness, cameras, flash, and camera focus.
- Power, volume, mute, side, and Home buttons where present.
- Speaker, earpiece, microphone, vibration, and headphone or adapter behavior.
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular calling, mobile data, and GPS where practical.
- Face ID or Touch ID, if advertised and important to your use.
- Charging through the connector and, on supported models, wireless charging.
These tests do not authenticate every component or prove that a phone has never been repaired. A serial number, box, or single settings screen is not a universal authenticity procedure. They are practical checks for discrepancies while a return remedy remains available.
Pay through a route that preserves your remedy
Use the marketplace’s payment system when buying through a marketplace. The FTC advises checking the platform’s protections and deadlines and avoiding payment outside the system when doing so would remove those protections.
Before paying, determine whether your credit card, debit card, or payment service provides a dispute process for this transaction and seller. Do not assume a chargeback or refund is guaranteed. Coverage can depend on the transaction type, documentation, timing, and the provider’s rules.
Keep the order confirmation, listing, messages, tracking record, photos, battery screenshot, Activation Lock result, and every support case number. If the phone is wrong, locked, damaged, or materially different, contact the seller and platform promptly through the required channel and state the discrepancy precisely.

What to do when something is wrong
The phone is Activation Locked
Do not sign in with your own account, pay an extra unlocking fee, or rely on a promised bypass. Capture the screen and request a return or platform dispute immediately.
The condition is worse than described
Photograph the damage beside the saved listing and packaging. Do not repair or modify the phone before the seller or platform tells you how to return it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The battery or repair history conflicts with the listing
Save the relevant Settings screens and ask for a written explanation. If the answer does not resolve the discrepancy, use the stated “not as described” or defect route before its deadline.
The phone will not charge or activate
Try a known-good charger and network connection once, document the result, and stop troubleshooting if the device still fails. A failed activation or charging test is evidence for the return request, not a reason to open the phone.
