Before buying an indie game, verify three separate things: the exact device and edition listed, the accessibility features the player actually needs, and the refund policy of the store taking payment. A game being available on a console, PC, or another platform does not mean one purchase works everywhere, and refund terms can change with the seller, product type, region, download status, and playtime.
Use the game’s own listing and accessibility documentation first, then read the current policy for the checkout you will use. The checks below help you avoid an unplayable purchase and preserve any refund option that may apply.
Why platform, accessibility, and refund checks are separate
A platform listing answers where a game can run; it does not answer whether the controls, presentation, or support options work for a particular player. A store policy answers when that seller may refund a purchase; it does not guarantee a refund from another storefront selling the same title.

- Platform compatibility: confirm the exact console generation, operating system, hardware requirements, edition, and online or account requirements shown for the title.
- Accessibility: confirm the specific features you need in the game, not merely a platform-wide accessibility capability or a genre assumption.
- Refund eligibility: identify the seller and product type, then check that seller’s current policy for your region before downloading, streaming, or playing.
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 121 puts the timing plainly: “Information about a game’s accessibility features and settings options should be available for players to review before purchase.” The guidance is intended for discoverable, game-specific information, not a generic promise that every title supports every feature.

Confirm exactly what and where you are buying
Match the listing to your device
Read the game’s full store listing rather than relying on a search result, trailer, or a platform logo. Check the named platform and generation, such as a particular console family or a PC release. On PC, look for the supported operating system and the listed processor, graphics, memory, storage, and other requirements. A title may have separate builds or requirements for different operating systems.
Also verify whether the listing is for the complete game, a demo, downloadable content (DLC), an expansion, a bundle, an early-access version, or a preorder. These are different products and can have different refund treatment. An apparently low price may be for DLC or a bundle that requires a separate base game.

Check edition, region, and account requirements
Confirm the edition name and what it includes. Deluxe or special editions can contain consumables, DLC, or in-game items whose refund rules differ from those for a standalone game. Look for requirements such as a platform account, a separate publisher account, an online subscription, persistent internet access, or a specific controller. These requirements are title-specific; there is no universal requirement for all indie games.
Check your region and language availability as well. Store pages can show different products, prices, rights, and policies by country. If a listing does not clearly state an important requirement, treat the information as incomplete and look for the developer’s support page or ask the store before paying.

Identify the actual storefront and payment provider
The account you use to play is not always the seller that processed the transaction. A console account, PC launcher, third-party code seller, or another checkout provider can determine where you must request support or a refund. Do not assume that buying a code for one platform gives you a license on another platform, or that a purchase transfers between storefronts.
Epic states that purchases made through a third-party console store or another checkout provider are governed by that point of purchase. Steam likewise says Valve cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys. Follow the seller shown on the final checkout screen and retain the receipt.

A preorder may have a refund clock that starts on a different date from an immediately playable purchase. Steam says that for a title bought before release and not playable beforehand, the 14-day period begins on the release date. Steam also counts Early Access playtime toward its two-hour limit. A demo or trial is a separate product and does not establish that the full release has the same features or performance.
Evaluate accessibility from your own needs
Start by listing the barriers that could prevent you from playing. Then look for evidence of the exact implementation in the game. A tag or a single word such as “subtitles” may not answer questions about readability, speaker identification, audio cues, or whether the setting is available at the right time.
Captions and subtitles
Check whether dialogue has subtitles and whether captions identify speakers. Look for controls for text size, contrast, background opacity, and display position. If non-speech information matters, verify whether meaningful sounds—such as enemy attacks, alarms, or environmental warnings—are represented visually. A subtitle option that covers spoken dialogue but omits essential sound cues may not meet a player’s needs.

Audio, visual, and reading support
Look for separate volume sliders, mute options, visual contrast settings, color adjustments, reduced-motion options, and text scaling. If you need narration or screen-reading support, confirm that menus, tutorials, and gameplay interfaces are covered, not just a cinematic. Documentation should state which platform and language the feature supports.
Input and controller options
Check for keyboard and controller support on the intended device, button remapping, toggle options in place of holding a button, adjustable hold or repeat timing, and simplified or single-stick control modes. Confirm whether remapping applies to every action, including menus, quick-time events, and accessibility screens. A game may support a controller generally while lacking a particular input arrangement you require.
Difficulty and pacing controls
Review selectable difficulty levels and settings that reduce timing pressure, repeated button presses, damage, or other barriers. Determine whether these options can be changed after starting and whether they affect achievements or online play. A “story” or “easy” label does not describe every obstacle, so seek a detailed explanation when a specific challenge matters.
When settings become available
Find out whether accessibility settings can be opened before the first cinematic, tutorial, or gameplay section. If a setting is only available after a difficult sequence, it may not solve the barrier it is intended to address. Screenshots or a developer support article can clarify the menu path when a store description is brief.
Use store tags as a lead, not proof
Store tags can help you find relevant information, but they are not a complete suitability test. Microsoft documents defined criteria for individual accessibility feature tags. Supported PlayStation 5 Store listings can display tags covering visual and audio settings, controller options, difficulty, and online communication features. Open the game’s detailed listing and compare each tag with your actual requirement.

If the store page is sparse, look for the developer’s accessibility page, manual, or support documentation. You can also ask a focused pre-purchase question, such as whether subtitles include speaker labels or whether all actions can be remapped. Save the answer with your purchase records.

Compare refund rules before checkout
The following comparison covers the published policies for the named stores and scopes. It is not a universal legal rule. Local consumer law may add rights, and each store can change its terms, so open the linked regional policy at the time you buy.

Steam: playtime and product type matter
Steam’s ordinary rule combines a 14-day request window with less than two hours of playtime. Playing an Early Access build uses the same playtime allowance. For a preorder that could not be played before launch, the 14-day period begins when the game releases. DLC is assessed separately; the policy refers to whether DLC has been consumed, modified, or transferred. Submit the request through Steam for a Steam purchase, not through a third-party key seller.
Epic: look for the eligibility label
On PC and Mac, Epic generally limits refunds to products marked refundable or self-refundable, requested within 14 days and below two hours of runtime. Do not infer that every product in the store has identical eligibility. Epic also distinguishes mobile terms and says the checkout provider controls purchases made elsewhere. Statutory rights can apply in addition to the store policy.

PlayStation Store in the United States: avoid downloading first
For a US PlayStation Store game or DLC purchase, the general condition is a request within 14 days while the content has not been downloaded or streamed. Downloading or streaming can therefore remove the ordinary eligibility route even if you have not played for long. Faulty-content exceptions and local legal rights may apply. Preorders, subscriptions, and consumables use different rules, so open the relevant section before buying those products.

- Write down the intended setup. Record the device or console generation, PC operating system, controller or input method, region, and whether you need online play.
- Open the exact product page. Confirm the game name, edition, product type, platform, release status, language, and listed hardware or service requirements.
- Separate the seller from the platform. On the checkout screen, note which store or payment provider is charging you. Do not treat a platform logo or a redeemable code as proof that the platform owner handles refunds.
- Build an accessibility checklist. Mark the features you need: caption detail, text size and contrast, audio or visual cues, narration, remapping, toggle controls, difficulty, pacing, and controller support.
- Verify each feature in game-specific information. Use the developer’s documentation, screenshots, videos showing settings menus, or a direct support answer. Treat a general store tag as a pointer to investigate.
- Read the regional refund policy for the product type. Check the request deadline, playtime or runtime limit, download and streaming conditions, and special rules for DLC, preorder, subscription, consumable, or early-access purchases.
- Save evidence. Keep the receipt, product page, accessibility description, policy link, and any support response. Policies and listings can change after purchase.
- Test without defeating eligibility. If your store requires no download or streaming, do not start the download or stream merely to test it. Where a playtime limit applies, stop before the limit if a refund may be necessary.
- Request help from the correct seller. Use the store account that processed payment and provide the order number, product type, date, and concise reason. A platform manufacturer may redirect you if another seller took payment.
What to do when information is missing
Ask a precise, answerable question
Instead of asking whether a game is “accessible,” ask about the feature that determines your decision: “Can every action be remapped on the PC version?” “Do captions identify speakers and important non-speech sounds?” or “Can text size and contrast be changed before the first cinematic?” Specific questions are more likely to produce a useful answer from a developer or store representative.
Use a cautious decision rule
If a required feature is undocumented and the store’s refund terms would be lost after download or extended play, treat the purchase as high risk. Wait for a clear answer, a demo that can be tested without compromising eligibility, or a policy change. Do not rely on a reviewer’s experience to prove that a feature exists in your edition or on your platform.

Distinguish a missing feature from a missing description
No documentation does not prove that a feature is absent, but it also does not establish that it works. Record the uncertainty and the cost of being wrong. This is especially important for captions, visual audio cues, remapping, narration, and settings that must be available before a particular sequence.

Regional rights and policy changes
Store policies are contractual rules published for particular products and regions; they are not a substitute for consumer law. Epic’s policy, for example, notes statutory rights including EU withdrawal rights. Steam and PlayStation also publish qualifications and separate categories rather than one rule for every purchase.
Use the regional policy linked from your store account, especially when traveling, buying from another country, or paying through a code seller. Recheck the page immediately before checkout for a preorder, subscription, consumable, DLC, or other non-standard product. If a local law may apply, preserve your receipt and contact the seller through its official support channel.
Make the decision before pressing Buy
A safe indie-game purchase is one where the title is listed for your exact device and edition, the game-specific accessibility information answers your actual needs, and the refund policy belongs to the seller processing payment. Verify those three independently. If any one is uncertain, pause rather than assuming a platform feature, a store tag, or another seller’s refund terms will cover you.
