Before paying, verify the exact handheld model, Android and Google Play support, game-service requirements, storage and controls, seller identity, shipping route, destination taxes, customs paperwork, box contents, warranty, and return costs. Imported handhelds that look alike can differ substantially by model, regional SKU, seller and delivery terms.
Start with the exact model, not the product family
“Android gaming handheld” describes a category, not a consistent specification. One manufacturer’s catalog may contain Android and Linux devices, while two visually similar revisions can use different processors, memory, displays or wireless hardware. Record the complete model name, storage option, color or regional SKU and seller listing before comparing prices.
Ask the seller to identify the model on the invoice and support ticket. Save a copy of the product page, specification sheet, checkout screen and order confirmation. Those records help if the delivered unit differs from the advertised configuration or if a return dispute arises.

- Android version and whether it is the version shipped, not merely an upgrade promise.
- Google Play Store availability and whether the device is certified for the apps you plan to use.
- Compatibility with each game, launcher, cloud-gaming service, streaming app and emulator you intend to install.
- Bootloader, firmware-update and regional-language limitations that could affect setup.

It is evidence for the RG406V only; it does not establish the same software for every ANBERNIC handheld or another seller’s listing. Treat a manufacturer’s statement about one model as a starting point, then check the manual for the precise SKU.

Match hardware to your games and controls
Use the manufacturer’s specifications to screen options, but do not turn them into promises of frame rate or emulator performance. Product specifications are not independent game testing. A chipset that appears suitable on paper can behave differently depending on thermal limits, firmware, emulator settings and game optimization.
Processor, memory and cooling
Compare the exact chipset, RAM capacity and storage technology. More memory can help with multitasking and demanding Android games, but it does not compensate for an unsuitable GPU or poor thermal design. Check whether the listing describes active cooling, a heat spreader or only passive ventilation. Also look for sustained-performance information rather than a short benchmark screenshot; if none is supplied, treat long-session performance as unknown.
Screen and physical controls
Check screen size, resolution, panel type, refresh rate, brightness and touch support against your games. Retro-focused systems may use a 4:3 display, while Android games and streaming services are often designed for wider ratios. Verify the placement and type of analogue sticks, D-pad, face buttons, shoulder buttons, triggers and any back buttons. A familiar shell shape does not guarantee comfortable access or correct button mapping.

Look for details that affect everyday use: analogue-stick sensor type, trigger travel, rumble, headphone output, speakers, microphone, USB-C video or data support and whether controls can be remapped in the operating system. If a feature is absent from the manual, mark it as unconfirmed rather than assuming it is included.
Battery and charging
Record the stated battery capacity and charging specification, including the charger voltage, current and supported standards. Capacity is a product specification, not a prediction of gaming hours. Brightness, wireless radios, game load and cooling can change runtime substantially. Confirm whether a charger is supplied and whether its plug is suitable for your country; a USB-C cable alone may not include a power adapter.
Check storage and expansion before ordering
Separate internal storage from removable storage. Confirm the usable internal capacity, whether the operating system occupies part of it, the card format, maximum supported capacity, file-system requirements and whether a card is included in the selected bundle.

The RG406V manual specifies microSD/TF expansion up to 2 TB and lists a USB-C cable, screen protector and manual in the box. Those details apply to the RG406V package described by that manual, not automatically to another model, retailer bundle or memory-card option.

- Is the slot accessible without opening the case?
- Does the system adopt the card as internal storage, use it as portable storage, or support both?
- Will emulators, game files and screenshots use separate folders?
- Does the seller preinstall software or ROM files, and are you legally permitted to use them in your jurisdiction?
- Is the advertised card capacity part of the selected configuration or merely shown in a bundle photograph?
Budget for a compatible card only after confirming the handheld’s capacity and speed requirements. Do not assume that a card supplied by a marketplace seller has the same warranty as the console.
Verify wireless and cellular compatibility
Check the exact Wi-Fi and Bluetooth versions if you rely on wireless headphones, controllers, local streaming or a particular router band. “Wi-Fi included” does not identify supported frequency bands or regional channels.
If the handheld offers cellular connectivity, compare the exact SKU’s LTE or 5G bands with your carrier’s bands and requirements. No particular carrier or country is identified as compatible, so obtain the band list from the manual or manufacturer and confirm it with the carrier before paying. A device that accepts a SIM card may still lack the frequencies, certification or voice support your network needs.
Calculate the real landed cost
The checkout price is only one component. Build a landed-cost worksheet for your destination:

Import duty depends on the destination, shipment value, classification and current rules; no universal amount can be calculated from the product category alone. Contact your customs authority or local customs office for the applicable treatment. Keep enough funds available for a carrier invoice or payment request after dispatch.

Understand customs-payment responsibility
ANBERNIC’s support article, modified 5 April 2023, advises buyers to contact their local customs office and pay incurred duties promptly. It states: “We are not responsible for any delivery failures due to non-payment of customs duties.” A parcel can therefore be delayed, returned or abandoned even when the handheld itself has already been paid for.
Retroid lists destination-specific customs identifiers for some countries and notes that DHL may collect duties. Requirements can change by destination and carrier, so check the current checkout instructions immediately before ordering. Confirm whether you must provide a tax number, national ID, importer code or other document, and whether the name on the order must match the customs record.
Distinguish delivery terms from tax-inclusive pricing
Some offers use delivered-duty-paid terms, while others leave all import charges to the recipient. AYANEO’s Pocket DS listing says duties and taxes are included in the displayed price for that offer, but also says duties paid on the customer’s behalf under DDP cannot be refunded if the customer returns the order. This is an offer-specific condition, not a general rule for every AYANEO product or imported handheld. Read the exact offer’s tax and refund language before assuming a return will recover the full amount.
Inspect the seller and the support path
Identify whether you are buying directly from the manufacturer, an authorized retailer or an unrelated marketplace seller. The same model name can be sold by multiple entities with different stock locations, invoices, warranty coverage and return addresses. A marketplace’s buyer-protection period may expire before a hidden hardware fault appears.
Questions for the seller
- Where is the unit dispatched from, and where must a return be sent?
- Who provides technical support: the manufacturer, the retailer or the marketplace?
- Is the item new, refurbished, open-box or regionally modified?
- Will the invoice show the actual model, serial number and paid amount?
- Are replacement parts available, and can the buyer install them without voiding coverage?
ANBERNIC’s knowledge base separates returns and refunds, missing accessories and after-sales parts. That separation is a reminder to obtain the remedy for your specific problem in writing. Confirm whether the seller ships a missing cable, sends a replacement unit, authorizes a repair, or requires the entire handheld to be returned.
Read warranty and return terms line by line
Do not treat a sentence such as “one-year warranty” as a complete service promise. Before purchase, record:

- Covered defects and exclusions for drops, liquid, battery wear, software changes and unauthorized repairs.
- Whether the seller or manufacturer makes the decision on repair, replacement or refund.
- Return-authorization procedure, response times and required photographs or videos.
- Return-shipping responsibility, customs paperwork and any restocking deduction.
- Repair location, expected turnaround and who pays shipping in both directions.
- Whether taxes, duties, brokerage fees or DDP charges are refundable.
Save the policy as a PDF or screenshot with the order number. Store unboxing photos and a continuous video showing the seal, serial number, accessories and first boot. These records can establish that an item was incomplete or damaged on arrival.

- Define the workload. List the Android games, emulators, streaming services, controllers, wireless accessories and travel requirements that matter to you.
- Collect primary specifications. Download the exact model’s manual or support page and record Android version, Play Store status, chipset, memory, display, battery, ports, wireless features and storage limit.
- Check compatibility. Compare the listed software requirements, controller layout, wireless bands and any cellular bands with your planned use.
- Audit the bundle. Write down every included item and distinguish the selected configuration from promotional photographs or optional accessories.
- Price delivery to your address. Enter the destination at checkout, identify the carrier, add likely duty, tax and brokerage charges, and verify any required customs identifier.
- Read service terms. Confirm warranty provider, return destination, shipping responsibility, repair route and treatment of taxes or duties.
- Verify the seller. Match the seller name on the listing, checkout and payment receipt; preserve all terms before placing the order.
- Recheck at payment. Make sure the final screen still shows the intended model, storage tier, delivery address, currency and total. Do not rely on an earlier screenshot if the seller changed the listing.
Compare multiple handhelds on the same axes
When several real options remain, use one worksheet rather than comparing headline prices. The following fields prevent a low price from hiding an unsuitable device or expensive return:

Red flags that justify pausing the order
- The listing omits a precise model number or mixes specifications from several devices.
- Android or Google Play access is implied by screenshots but not stated for the exact SKU.
- The seller refuses to identify the dispatch country, carrier or return address.
- “Free shipping” is presented without any explanation of destination duties or taxes.
- A bundled memory card, charger or case appears only in photographs, not in the written package contents.
- Warranty language says the buyer pays all international shipping but gives no repair location or process.
- The seller asks for a customs payment through an unverified message or a different payment account.
- The price is substantially below other listings but the unit is described as refurbished, modified or without a serial number.
Pause and request written clarification. If the answer changes the model, total cost or remedy, save the response and reassess the purchase rather than relying on a verbal promise.
What to do when delivery goes wrong
Customs is holding the parcel
Check the carrier’s tracking notice and contact the named customs or brokerage office. Submit the requested identification or tax number and pay through the carrier’s official channel. Keep the receipt. Failure to pay can lead to delivery failure under the policy quoted above.
An accessory is missing
Photograph the box, shipping label and all contents. Compare them with the exact bundle selected at checkout, then open the seller’s missing-accessory or after-sales case before buying a replacement. Ask whether the seller will ship the item or require a return.

The unit is defective on arrival
Stop using it if there is heat, smoke, swelling or liquid damage. Record the serial number and symptoms, follow the seller’s required diagnostic steps, and obtain a return authorization before shipping. Do not send the device to an address found in an unrelated message.

You want to return a working unit
Check the deadline, condition requirements and deductions first. Ask specifically whether destination tax, brokerage or DDP duties will be refunded; the Pocket DS example shows that duties paid on a customer’s behalf may be excluded from a refund.
Final decision rule
Buy only when the exact model satisfies your software and control requirements, the complete landed cost fits your budget, and the seller gives you a workable written path for customs, returns and repairs. If any of those three areas remains unknown, the apparent bargain is an unresolved liability rather than a confirmed saving.
