A low price is only a good appliance deal when you know exactly which unit you are buying, what protection is included, and what it will cost to undo the purchase. Before paying, record the manufacturer and complete model number; confirm the unit’s condition and included parts; calculate delivery, handling, taxes, and other fees; read the written warranty; and save the sale-item return policy. Online marketplaces require an additional check because the seller, not necessarily the platform, may control returns and refunds.
Start with the exact appliance, not the advertised headline
Appliance listings can look identical while referring to different model variants. Features, dimensions, included accessories, finish, electrical requirements, warranty terms, and even return eligibility can change with a few characters in the model code. Write down the manufacturer and the complete model number exactly as shown in the listing, on the carton, or on the appliance label. Use that identifier when comparing prices and specifications at other sellers.
What the model number tells you
A model number identifies the particular product configuration. It can distinguish capacity, color, generation, voltage, regional version, bundled accessories, or a retailer-specific variant. It is not the same as a broad product family name, stock-keeping unit, serial number, or promotional name. The serial number usually identifies your individual unit after purchase; the model number is the identifier you need to compare like-for-like offers.
Ask the seller to confirm the full model number if any characters are missing from the listing. A photograph of the rating plate or box can help when the image clearly shows the actual unit, but do not assume a generic marketing photograph represents the exact appliance being shipped.

Check what condition and package you are actually buying
Read the entire listing and every qualification near the price. Determine whether the appliance is new, used, refurbished, open-box, close-out, vintage, damaged, or sold “as is.” Look for statements about cosmetic marks, missing manuals, replacement parts, prior installation, or a shortened warranty. Confirm which racks, hoses, trays, remotes, mounting hardware, or other components are included. A lower price may reflect a different package rather than a discount on the same new unit.
Check whether the offer requires buying another item, selecting a particular delivery service, using a coupon, joining a membership, or meeting a minimum order. Keep a copy of the conditions that applied when you placed the order; online pages can change after the sale.
Calculate the real, out-the-door cost
Compare the amount you will actually pay, not only the bold sale price. Add shipping, handling, delivery into the home, installation, haul-away, taxes, recycling charges, payment surcharges, and any other mandatory fee. A store pickup price may not include delivery to your address; an online marketplace may add fees at checkout.
| Cost item | Question to answer before paying |
|---|---|
| Advertised appliance price | Does it apply to the exact model number and condition you selected? |
| Delivery and handling | Is curbside delivery different from room-of-choice delivery, installation, or old-unit removal? |
| Taxes and mandatory fees | What is the final total shown at checkout for your location? |
| Conditional discounts | Must you buy another product, use a code, or meet a membership requirement? |
| Potential return costs | Could return freight, pickup, or a restocking fee reduce your refund? |
If a seller does not promise a shipping time, Federal Trade Commission online-shopping guidance says the seller generally must ship within 30 days after receiving the order information or authorization to charge. That rule concerns shipping timing; it does not guarantee a particular delivery date, free delivery, or a right to return an appliance.
Read the included warranty before you buy
The Federal Trade Commission says, “Most major purchases like cars and home appliances come with a written warranty.” A warranty is the manufacturer’s or seller’s written promise about what happens if the product has a covered defect. It is not a promise that every failure, installation problem, or accidental damage will be repaired for free.
Find the operative warranty document
Locate the full warranty, not merely a badge saying “one-year warranty.” Read the document for:
- the length of coverage and when the period begins;
- which parts, labor, electronics, compressors, motors, or other components are covered;
- exclusions for misuse, improper installation, commercial use, cosmetic damage, consumables, neglect, power problems, or unauthorized repairs;
- the remedy, such as repair, replacement of a part, replacement of the appliance, refund, or credit;
- claim instructions, required proof of purchase, registration requirements, and authorized service channels;
- where service is available and whether the company pays diagnostic fees, labor, shipping, pickup, or travel;
- any limits on consequential damages or on how long an implied warranty lasts.
Save the warranty as a downloadable file or photograph every page. Keep the receipt and order confirmation with it. If the sale listing promises a different warranty from the manufacturer’s document, ask which promise governs before completing the purchase.
Understand who handles a warranty claim
Some appliances are serviced by the manufacturer; others require a retailer, authorized technician, or separate administrator to open the claim. Write down the correct phone number or web form and whether you must use an authorized installer. Ask whether a technician will come to your home, whether you must transport the appliance, and who pays shipping for a replacement part. These practical details can matter more than the headline duration.
Buying at a discount does not by itself cancel a manufacturer’s written warranty. However, a clearance, refurbished, used, or “as-is” unit may have different written terms, a seller-only warranty, or no warranty at all. Confirm the terms for the condition and seller shown on your order.
Can you return a sale appliance?
Do not infer a return right from the fact that the appliance is sold by a familiar store or that another product in the same store has free returns. The Federal Trade Commission’s online-shopping guidance puts it plainly: “If you buy things on sale, doublecheck the return policies.” Sale, clearance, open-box, and special-order items often have separate rules.

Get these return terms in writing
| Return term | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Deadline | How many days do you have, and does the clock start at purchase, shipment, or delivery? |
| Eligibility | Must the appliance be unopened, uninstalled, unused, or in original packaging? |
| Refund form | Will you receive the original payment, store credit, an exchange, or a refund minus deductions? |
| Return transport | Who arranges and pays for pickup or return shipping for a large appliance? |
| Restocking fee | Is a percentage or flat fee charged, and is it different for sale or special-order items? |
| Damage and missing parts | What inspection standard applies, and can missing packaging reduce the refund? |
Save a screenshot, PDF, or printed copy of the policy that applied on the purchase date. If a representative gives you a different answer by chat or email, preserve that conversation and ask the representative to identify the policy section supporting it.

Online, in-store, and delivered purchases
For an in-store purchase, ask for the printed policy that applies to the specific sale item before the receipt is issued. For an online order, review the item-level return section as well as the general policy; the item page may exclude a category or impose a special-order rule. For a delivered appliance, inspect the carton and unit as soon as practical and follow the seller’s process for reporting shipping damage. Do not install or discard packaging until you know whether the policy requires an unopened return or an inspection.
A sale price does not establish a generous return period, and a warranty is not a substitute for a return right. A warranty addresses covered defects under its own claim process; a return policy governs whether you can send back an appliance under the seller’s stated conditions.
Who pays return shipping?
The answer is in the seller’s written terms, not in the size of the discount. Some sellers provide prepaid pickup for a defective or incorrectly shipped appliance but charge the customer for a change-of-mind return. Others deduct freight from the refund, require you to arrange a carrier, or impose a restocking fee. Ask specifically about stair carries, appointment fees, remote-area surcharges, and removal of the old appliance.
Before accepting delivery, find out how damage must be documented. A seller may require photographs of the carton, a notation on the delivery receipt, or notification within a short period. Follow the stated procedure and keep copies of every submission.

Identify the seller when a marketplace is involved
A marketplace page can combine the platform’s checkout with an independent seller’s inventory and policies. Confirm the legal or displayed seller name, the shipping origin, and whether the item is fulfilled by the platform or by the seller. Read both the seller’s return terms and the marketplace’s buyer-protection rules. The platform may leave refunds and returns to the seller or offer only limited assistance.
Questions to answer before ordering from a marketplace
- Is the item sold as new, used, refurbished, close-out, or as-is?
- Who issues the receipt and who is responsible for a warranty claim?
- Does buyer protection apply to this seller, category, condition, and payment method?
- Where must a return be sent, and who pays international or cross-border freight?
- What happens if the seller stops responding or the listing changes?
Save the listing URL, product description, photographs, seller messages, promised delivery date, and checkout total. These records establish what was offered if the delivered appliance differs from the listing.
Compare two offers with one worksheet
When two sellers advertise the same model, place their terms side by side. A lower sticker price can lose its advantage after delivery, a shorter return window, or a seller-only warranty is included.
| Comparison point | Offer A | Offer B |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer and complete model number | Record exactly | Record exactly |
| Condition and included components | New, refurbished, open-box, or other stated condition | New, refurbished, open-box, or other stated condition |
| Out-the-door total | Price plus delivery, fees, and taxes | Price plus delivery, fees, and taxes |
| Written warranty | Term, coverage, exclusions, remedy, claim costs | Term, coverage, exclusions, remedy, claim costs |
| Return window and eligibility | Deadline and condition requirements | Deadline and condition requirements |
| Refund, shipping, and restocking | Refund method, transport responsibility, fees | Refund method, transport responsibility, fees |
| Responsible party | Retailer, manufacturer, marketplace, or another administrator | Retailer, manufacturer, marketplace, or another administrator |
Only after these baseline terms are clear should you consider an optional service contract. Comparing a service plan before confirming the included protections can make an apparently cheap offer look better than it is.

Decide separately on an extended warranty or service contract
An extended warranty or service contract is a separate paid agreement. It may begin after the manufacturer’s warranty ends, run at the same time as it, or provide a different set of benefits. Do not assume that paying extra automatically produces better protection.

Compare the incremental coverage
Read the contract for its start and end dates, covered failures, exclusions, deductibles, service-call fees, limits per claim, aggregate limits, replacement rules, cancellation rights, and responsibility for filing a claim. Check whether the administrator can choose repair, replacement, reimbursement, or a comparable model. Find out whether labor, transportation, installation, food loss, water damage, or cosmetic issues are excluded.
Compare the contract’s price and every recurring or per-claim fee with the manufacturer warranty you already receive. If the service plan overlaps the first year of coverage, identify exactly what additional protection you obtain during that overlap. Keep the contract, receipt, and administrator contact information together.
Keep a purchase record that can support a complaint
Create one folder—digital or paper—for the listing, model and serial numbers, receipt, warranty, return policy, delivery records, photographs, and seller communications. Record the purchase date and place. If a problem develops, describe the appliance by manufacturer, model or serial number, purchase date, and seller rather than using only a product nickname.

- Stop using the appliance if continued operation could create a safety risk, and preserve the packaging when the return terms may require it.
- Photograph the appliance, carton, labels, damage, and model or serial plate.
- Contact the party named in the applicable return or warranty instructions. State whether you are requesting a return, repair, replacement, or other remedy and include the purchase date and proof of purchase.
- Send the request through a trackable channel and keep the case number, emails, chat transcript, and promised next step.
- Follow the required inspection, pickup, authorized-service, or shipping procedure. Do not hire an unauthorized repairer if the warranty excludes that work unless the company approves it in writing.
- If the seller or warranty administrator does not resolve the matter, escalate using the written policy and then contact the relevant state consumer-protection office for advice about jurisdiction-specific rights.
Implied-warranty rights and additional requirements vary by state, the seller, the product condition, and the transaction. FTC guidance is U.S. consumer guidance, not a uniform statement of every state’s law. Check your state consumer-protection office when the written policy does not answer your situation.
A final pre-payment decision test
Proceed only when you can answer all of these questions from saved documents:
- What is the complete manufacturer and model number?
- Is the unit new, refurbished, open-box, used, close-out, vintage, or as-is?
- What components and services are included?
- What is the total delivered price for your address?
- What does the written warranty cover, exclude, and require?
- Who pays labor, shipping, pickup, or diagnostic costs under that warranty?
- What is the sale item’s exact return deadline and condition requirement?
- Will the refund be money, credit, or an exchange, and can fees be deducted?
- Who is responsible for a marketplace return and warranty claim?
- What extra protection, if any, does a paid service contract add?
If any answer is missing, ask the seller for a written response or choose an offer whose terms are clear. The discount is not fully understood until the product identity, total cost, warranty, return path, and responsible party are documented.
