Before buying an AI-powered device, verify five things in its current documentation: what data the AI collects and where it is processed, how the account and device are protected, how long the manufacturer promises updates, which app permissions and privacy controls you get, and whether the device’s security claims are independently defined. Then judge those facts against your use case—an always-listening speaker, a health wearable, a camera, an appliance, and an AI computer do not create the same risks.

The checks below turn vague AI marketing into questions you can answer before payment. Save the product’s privacy notice, security page, support policy, warranty, and app-permission list; those documents can change after launch.

1. Define what the “AI” actually does

“AI-powered” is not a technical category. It may describe voice transcription, image recognition, recommendations, generative text, anomaly detection, or an assistant that sends prompts to a cloud service. Start by writing down the specific function you expect to use. A feature that only classifies activity on the device has a different privacy profile from one that uploads recordings, photos, location history, or health measurements for remote processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask for a feature-level explanation

  • What inputs does the feature need: audio, video, typed prompts, contacts, precise location, biometric information, health measurements, or data from other household devices?
  • What output does it produce, and can the device work without that output?
  • Does processing happen on the device, through a manufacturer account, or through another connected service?
  • Which features stop working when the device is offline or when you decline an optional permission?

Do not accept a general statement such as “your data is secure” as an answer. Look for a current privacy notice and product-specific help page that describe the individual AI function. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises buyers to consider what information a connected device collects and with whom it is shared; its consumer privacy guidance is a useful baseline.

2. Map the data lifecycle before you buy

List collection, purpose, and retention

Make a simple inventory of every data type the device can create or receive. Include information generated automatically, such as voice clips, camera frames, movement patterns, device identifiers, crash logs, and inferred preferences. For each item, find the stated purpose: operating a feature, improving a model, personalizing recommendations, advertising, fraud prevention, or diagnostics. A purpose that is necessary for the device should be distinguished from an optional improvement program.

Next, find the retention period. “We retain data as long as necessary” is not a duration; look for a stated period, deletion process, or account setting. Check whether deleting a recording also removes derived profiles, transcripts, backups, or data already used to improve a service. If the policy does not explain those distinctions, record that as an unanswered question rather than assuming deletion is complete.

Identify recipients and transfers

Determine whether information is shared with affiliates, cloud-hosting providers, analytics companies, model providers, professional reviewers, or law-enforcement agencies under specified legal processes. Check the countries or regions in which processing occurs if the policy provides them. The FTC’s connected-device guidance explains that the amount and type of information, who receives it, and the likely risks all affect what “reasonable security” should mean for a product. Read its Careful Connections resource alongside the device’s own documentation.

Match data sensitivity to the benefit

Classify the information as low, moderate, or high sensitivity. A kitchen timer may expose little; a camera can reveal a home’s occupants; a wearable can reveal sleep, location, or medical-related patterns. For high-sensitivity data, require a clear purpose, a credible deletion control, and a useful way to disable collection without losing basic operation. If the benefit is minor but the data is permanent or broadly shared, choose a less data-intensive product or skip the feature.

3. Check where processing occurs and what happens offline

On-device processing can reduce the amount of raw information sent away, but the phrase alone does not prove that no data leaves the product. A device may analyze an input locally and still upload logs, transcripts, embeddings, account identifiers, or diagnostic samples. Conversely, a cloud feature may be required for advanced results but offer a short retention period or a setting that prevents model-improvement use.

Questions for the product page and manual

  • Which functions run without an internet connection?
  • What is transmitted for each AI function, and is transmission continuous or event-triggered?
  • Can you view, export, or delete stored inputs and outputs?
  • Does disabling personalization, history, or improvement training reduce functionality?
  • What happens to stored data when you transfer, sell, or recycle the device?

Test the answer against your household’s connectivity. If an internet outage makes a safety-related function unavailable, treat that as a reliability issue, not merely an inconvenience.

4. Inspect account and device security

Use unique credentials and multifactor authentication

Find out whether the device requires an account and whether each household member can have a separate login. A unique password for the account is preferable to a shared or factory-default credential. Enable multifactor authentication (MFA) if the service supports it, and check whether MFA protects both the web account and the companion app. If a product cannot change a default administrator password, cannot create individual users, or offers no account recovery that you can secure, weigh that limitation heavily.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for technical safeguards

Security documentation should address encryption in transit and at rest, protected update delivery, and rate limits or lockouts after repeated unsuccessful login attempts. The FTC specifically discusses encryption and limiting repeated failed logins in its connected-device guidance. The manufacturer does not need to publish exploit-ready implementation details, but it should explain the security outcomes it commits to and how vulnerabilities can be reported.

Separate household roles

Check whether guests can use the device without seeing recordings, location history, purchases, or health data. A camera, speaker, or family tablet should support the least privilege practical for your home: ordinary users can use a feature, while only an administrator can change security settings, add integrations, or export history. If the product has no role separation, plan for the most sensitive user’s risk.

5. Verify updates, support, and the end-of-life plan

Find a support commitment, not just a launch promise

Before paying, locate the warranty, support policy, update method, and any stated minimum support period. Ask whether security updates arrive automatically, require a companion app, or depend on an active subscription. Also check whether the company publishes release notes or a vulnerability-disclosure channel. The FTC’s January 2018 connected-home advice tells buyers to review warranty and support policies and to keep devices updated because critical security updates may be necessary; read the advice at Buying or selling a “smart” home? Read this.

Understand what “support” includes

A support period may cover hardware repairs but not security patches, or it may cover the operating system while an AI service changes separately. Look for distinct answers to these questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • For how long will the device receive security fixes?
  • For how long will the AI service, voice model, or cloud history remain available?
  • Will core local functions continue if the account or cloud service is discontinued?
  • Are replacement batteries, chargers, or sensors available for the expected life?
  • What notice will you receive before a feature or service is removed?

If no end date is published, treat the usable life as uncertain and avoid storing irreplaceable information on the device. A low purchase price does not compensate for an early loss of security or essential functionality.

6. Audit the companion app, account, and permissions

Identify mandatory dependencies

Determine whether setup requires a phone, a particular operating-system version, a permanent account, a subscription, or a specific wireless network. Check whether another person can administer the device if the original purchaser is unavailable. An AI device that depends on an app you cannot install on your phone may be unusable even when the hardware works.

Review permissions one by one

Before setup, read the app’s requested permissions and compare them with the feature you intend to use. A microphone may be necessary for voice control; continuous location, contacts, photo-library access, or Bluetooth scanning may be optional. On the phone, set permissions to “only while using,” “selected photos,” or an equivalent limited mode when that still permits the required function. Recheck permissions after app updates because an operating-system update can also reset or broaden access.

Find privacy controls in the real menus

Locate controls for microphone or camera access, activity history, personalization, diagnostic sharing, model-improvement use, advertising, household-member invitations, and account deletion. Record the exact path while evaluating the product. A control that exists only on a web dashboard, or that is buried behind a paid plan, is less practical than a switch available in the device’s normal settings. FTC consumer advice recommends reviewing privacy settings and permissions for mobile devices that interact with connected products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Treat security labels and AI claims as evidence to investigate

A badge or “secure by design” phrase can help you find documentation, but it is not proof that every privacy, security, or AI-performance question is resolved. NIST’s CSWP 24, Recommended Criteria for Cybersecurity Labeling for Consumer Internet of Things (IoT) Products, published February 4, 2022, describes recommended criteria and considerations for consumer-IoT cybersecurity labels: NIST CSWP 24. NIST’s IR 8425, Profile of the IoT Core Baseline for Consumer IoT Products, published September 19, 2022, frames baseline capabilities as outcomes for the product as a whole: NIST IR 8425.

Use a label as a prompt to ask: What scope does it cover? Which edition or testing date applies? Does it address only cybersecurity, or also data retention, human review, accuracy, accessibility, and service continuity? A cybersecurity label does not certify that an AI output is accurate, unbiased, medically suitable, or private in every operating mode. Require the manufacturer’s supporting documentation and limitations.

8. Compare products on the same axes

Do not compare a wearable with a smart speaker by headline features alone. Build a table using the same questions for every candidate, then add category-specific requirements.

9. Follow a pre-purchase investigation

  1. Write the use case. State the one or two AI functions you need, who will use them, and which data must never leave your home or account.
  2. Download the current documents. Save the privacy notice, security page, user manual, warranty, support policy, subscription terms, and app-permission explanation for the exact model and region.
  3. Trace one data example. Follow an input such as a voice request, face image, or heart-rate reading from capture to processing, storage, sharing, deletion, and backup. Note every undocumented step.
  4. Check authentication. Confirm password changes, MFA, separate users, guest access, recovery, encryption statements, and protection against repeated login attempts.
  5. Check longevity. Record the promised security-update period, update delivery method, cloud-service dependency, warranty, and end-of-support consequences.
  6. Install or inspect the app before opening the box. Verify phone compatibility and list every mandatory and optional permission. Look for controls to disable history, recordings, personalization, diagnostics, and invitations.
  7. Test the manufacturer’s answers. Send a precise support question about retention, deletion, offline operation, or end-of-support. Vague replies are a reason to downgrade the product.
  8. Score the candidates by risk. Give the greatest weight to data exposure and support gaps when the device handles sensitive information; give more weight to reliability and accessibility when the data is low sensitivity.
  9. Make a stop-or-buy decision. Stop when a requirement is non-negotiable and undocumented—for example, no way to disable a camera in a private room or no security-update commitment for a networked device.

10. Apply the checklist to common device categories

Wearables and health-oriented devices

Ask whether measurements are stored as health data, who can see family or caregiver accounts, how long location and sleep histories remain available, and what happens when a subscription ends. Separate wellness suggestions from clinical advice, and do not assume an AI interpretation is a diagnosis. Check export and deletion before building a long personal history.

Smart speakers and displays

Confirm the wake-word behavior, recording indicator, voice-history retention, household voice profiles, guest controls, and whether recordings can be reviewed and deleted. Place the device where private conversations are not routinely captured. Verify what remains functional when the internet or account is unavailable.

Cameras and security systems

Prioritize account takeover resistance, MFA, user roles, encryption, notification controls, storage location, retention, and the process for sharing clips. Determine whether AI detection sends full video, still frames, or metadata to a cloud service. Check how to revoke access when a household member, installer, or former tenant should no longer view the system.

Connected appliances and home controls

Find out whether the AI feature is essential to a safety or energy function, whether schedules continue offline, and whether remote control can be disabled without losing local operation. Review permissions for energy, occupancy, and location data, and check whether a discontinued cloud account leaves the appliance usable.

11. Recognize red flags before payment

  • The product page promises “private” or “secure” AI but provides no feature-level data-flow explanation.
  • A mandatory account is required, yet there is no MFA, role separation, or clear recovery process.
  • The company will not state a security-update period or explain what happens after cloud support ends.
  • The app requests broad permissions with no limited mode and no explanation of why each is needed.
  • Deletion is described only as “deactivation,” or the policy omits backups and derived profiles.
  • A security badge is shown without its scope, date, criteria, or a link to supporting documentation.
  • Core operation depends on a subscription whose price, renewal, or cancellation terms are unclear.
  • Support cannot answer a specific question about retention, processing location, or offline behavior.

One red flag may be tolerable for a low-sensitivity gadget; several together are a strong reason to choose a simpler device or wait for clearer documentation.

12. Set it up safely if you buy

Do not postpone the security work until after the first week of use. The FTC’s January 2018 advice recommends resetting connected devices, reviewing current privacy settings and interacting-app permissions, checking warranty and support policies, and applying updates.

  1. Change every default password and use a unique, long account password.
  2. Turn on MFA and create individual household users where available.
  3. Install firmware, operating-system, and app updates before enabling AI history or integrations.
  4. Disable optional microphone, camera, location, contacts, diagnostic, advertising, and model-improvement access until you decide it is needed.
  5. Set the shortest practical retention period; delete test recordings and prompts.
  6. Limit integrations to the devices and services that are necessary, and remove unused accounts.
  7. Enable visible indicators, notification controls, and local privacy modes when the product offers them.
  8. Save the support end date, warranty, recovery codes, and account-deletion instructions with your purchase records.

13. A practical decision rule

Buy when the product’s documented data use matches the sensitivity of your intended use, its account and device controls are adequate, its update and service life are credible, and you can operate the important features with permissions you accept. Choose a different model when a non-negotiable fact—such as cloud processing of private recordings, lack of MFA for a remotely accessible camera, or an undisclosed security-update period—is missing or unacceptable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The best AI-powered device is therefore not the one with the longest feature list. It is the one whose data flows, controls, support commitments, and limitations you can understand well enough to manage for its entire useful life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is on-device AI automatically private?

No. A device can process an input locally and still upload logs, transcripts, identifiers, diagnostics, or derived data. Read the product’s data-flow and retention documentation for each feature.

What if the manufacturer does not publish a security-update period?

Treat the support life as uncertain. Ask support for a written commitment, avoid storing sensitive information, and prefer a product with a documented update policy.

Do security labels prove that an AI device is safe?

No. NIST’s labeling work addresses recommended consumer-IoT cybersecurity criteria. A label does not by itself establish privacy, AI accuracy, accessibility, or continued cloud-service availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I reject a device that needs a companion app?

Not necessarily. Verify phone compatibility, required permissions, account recovery, offline behavior, and whether essential functions survive if the app or cloud service is discontinued.
